I had Chilblains on my toes for 4 years now. I remember the first year, my toes were getting extremely itchy at night in the cold winter months. Nothing helped relieve the pain. The toes were red and bumpy. As spring came along the itchiness and swollen on my toes slowly disappear. Another winter came along, and the same thing happened. I finally went to the doctor, and find out it was Chilblains. Some people might have it the first year and it might disappear the next year. For some it just keeps coming back. But you can try to prevent it from coming. You can try to prevent it by keeping your toes warm and dry. If you toes get cold them it will easily come back and if you do not treat them well they might stay with you for the whole winter. So start with keeping your toes warm in the beginning.
I haven't been really suffering from the itchiness and swelling since last winter. I kept my toes warm from the beginning and it helped a lot. So for those who are suffering with swollen itchy toes, try your best to keep your feet warm and cozy.

If you have itchy swollen toes, consult your physician and see if it is Chilblains.

Home Remedies For Chilblains

Here are some home remedies for Chilblains that can help relieve the itchiness and redness. You should go contact your physician if your Chilblains are very severe.

Raw Onion - cut a raw onion and use the edge of the onion over the Chilblains. Let the juice soak into the skin. This will help cut down the itchiness.

Egg and Honey - Use a tablespoon of honey, a little of glycerin , one egg white, mix it to a paste with alittle flour. Apply over the Chilblains for about 8 hours.

Potato and Salt - slice a potato, sprinkle some salt on the potato, and rub it over the chilblains.

Warm vegetable oil and lemon juice - massage with warm vegetable oil added with a few drop of lemon juice.

You can massage your toes and hands with the warm vegetable oil with the lemon juice even before the chilblains occur to prevent it as well. I never tried any of the home remedies myself besides the massaging with the warm vegetable oil.

Once Chilblains Develops You Should

Once Chilblains develops you should not rub your toes and scratch them. Try keep your feet warm, but do not expose them directly to the heat. You can try to put on some kind of smoothing lotion. I remember using calamine lotion, but it didn't really help me so much. But it did kinda lessen the irritation and itch. Padding your toes with your warm hands can relieve some of your irritation as well. Wear wool socks to keep your foot warm. You should definitely go contact your physician. The Chilblains that I developed was not as severed. If you have bad blood circulation it can get severe. So make sure your contact your physician.

Preventions Of Chilblains

Prevention Of Chilblains:
Try to keep your feet warm, but also do not exposure directly to the heat. (example do not put your feet directly on the heater to keep it hot) Wear comfortable, breathable slippers in the house. If your feet does get cold, let it warm up slowly. Do not rush to the heat to warm it up, it will get it worst. Try to keep your feet warm and dry. Prevent from stepping on puddles. Wear wool socks, it is a lot warmer then cotton socks. Wear comfortable winter boots. I would recommend UGG, that's what I been wearing since last winter.
I use to have a habit of not drying my toes too well after showering. So I think it helps to dry your toes thoroughly after showering, but do not rub on them which might cause irritation. Try maintain good blood circulation. Smoking causes bad blood circulation to your body as well, so that might be something you should not do.
The most important thing is actually to avoid your feet from getting cold. So best would be warm comfortable winter boots.
I never gotten Chilblains on my fingers, but I would assume to keep your hands warm as well if that is a problem for you. Even though I never gotten Chilblains on my fingers, but since I have that problem on my toes, it would be smart to keep my hands warm as well. So remember wear mitten or gloves in the cold weather.
