Suryakumar's match-winning catch stirs controversy after T20 World Cup victory

After India were crowned champions at the T20 World Cup 2024 with a seven-run victory over South Africa, the last-over catch by their player Suryakumar Yadav sparked a controversy.

The 33-year-old cricketer helped his side seal the victory at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, on Saturday night as he took a stunning catch in the final over, dismissing David Miller, when the Proteas needed 16 runs to win.

The batter hit a full toss for a six on a straight hit on Hardik Pandya's delivery but Suryakumar took a brilliant catch, which has also been regarded as the best grab of the entire tournament.

The ball looked certain to cross the boundary ropes but Suryakumar grabbed it while running. He juggled the ball and went over the ropes to avoid his feet touching the ropes, jumped back again and held on to the ball, which ultimately won the match for India.

The decision went to the third umpire, Richard Kettleborough, who had a quick view at it and declared the catch legal, which ended Miller’s innings and eventually the Proteas’ hopes of lifting their maiden title.

Soon after India's victory a debate started on social media with some arguing that Surykumar’s shoe flicked the boundary ropes while grabbing the catch.

Not just that, the boundary ropes also looked out of position before the Indian took the match-winning catch.

As per the ICC’s playing conditions, the cushion is considered the boundary and not the white line which can be seen in the pictures. Section 19.3 states: "If a solid object used to mark the boundary is disturbed for any reason, then the boundary shall be considered to be in its original position."

It was further argued that the boundary rope should’ve been moved back into its original position. Section 19.3.2 states: “If a solid object used to mark the boundary is disturbed for any reason, the object shall be returned to its original position as soon as is practicable; if play is taking place, this shall be as soon as the ball is dead.”

Suryakumar Yadav made headlines during the T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa in Barbados on Saturday when he took a catch at the boundary line.

With the Proteas needing 16 runs off the final over, David Miller hit a full toss from Hardik Pandya down the ground. Suryakumar covered groud to his left, grabbed the ball, threw it up in the air as momentum took him over the rope, hopped back in and completed the catch.

Miller’s wicket proved pivotal in India clinching the match by seven runs and getting its second T20 World Cup title.

However, replays showed a peculiar point of contention in the sequence of play. Though Suryakumar held the ball inches inside the the fence, the boundary line appeared to have been pushed back from its original place. This was evident from the white patch of grass left on as a result of being covered by the rope earlier.

According to law 19.3 and its sub-sections of the playing conditions of the T20 World Cup, titled ‘Restoring the boundary’, “If a solid object used to mark the boundary is disturbed for any reason, then: 19.3.1 - The boundary shall be considered to be in its original position. 19.3.2 - The object shall be returned to its original position as soon as is practicable; if play is taking place, this shall be as soon as the ball is dead. 19.3.3 if some part of a fence or other marker has come within the field of play, that part shall be removed from the field of play as soon as is practicable; if play is taking place, this shall be as soon as the ball is dead.”

The picture of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in tears was the perfect representation of how the Indian cricket team and their fans felt after the loss against Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023 final. While both players won World Cups as youngsters in the national set-up, the loss robbed them to the perfect chance to bookend their illustrious careers. However, there was no such case on Saturday as India defeated South Africa in a thriller to clinch the T20 World Cup 2024 title and the excitement was visible on the experienced duo's faces. Rohit broke down in tears on the ground while Virat's fist bumps and aggressive celebration once again provided a sneak peek at his competitive attitude. However, what made the victory bittersweet was the dual announcement that shook Indian cricket.

Just after the match, Kohli was asked by presenter Harsha Bhogle about his future and the star batter announced that it was his final T20I game in Indian colours. Not even two hours later, Rohit walked into the post-match press conference and told reporters that even he was biding adieu to T20I cricket.

While the players and fans are still engulfed in the high of the T20 World Cup win, the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli certainly signalled a tectonic shift in Indian cricket. They were the most experienced members of the national team and their departure paves way to an uncertain future.

The departure of Rohit means that India will now have a brand new captain in the T20 format. While Hardik Pandya seems to be the captain elect after leading the side in multiple series and serving as the deputy to Rohit in the World Cup, some new options have also emerged in the recent past.

Rishabh Pant has proven himself as a solid choice in the Indian Premier League (IPL) while the team management opted for Shubman Gill to lead the side in the upcoming series against Zimbabwe.

Besides the captaincy issue, the departure of Rohit also means India will have to find a brand new opening partnership. Rohit and Virat opened the batting in every game of the T20 World Cup and the team will now need talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad to finally stake their claim.

Coming to Kohli, how do you replace arguably the best batter in modern cricket? Kohli provided the Indian cricket team with a star batter, a tremendous fielder and a seasoned cricketing brain who was a stalwart in the dressing room. The team will now need to find someone who can make the crucial No. 3 batting spot his own and the pressure will also be on the senior players to step up in leadership roles.

Apart from Kohli and Rohit, the T20 World Cup final was also the final game for Rahul Dravid as head coach. His tenure finished with the competition and he made it clear that he will not be renewing his contract. The search for his successor is currently underway and although Gautam Gambhir is currently the frontrunner, the ultimate choice will inherit a completely new-look India side.

All good times are bound to end and it is almost perfect that Kohli and Rohit ended their superlative careers with a World Cup trophy. However, the announcements also mean that a new but somewhat uncertain future awaits the Indian cricket team in the next few months.

Virat Kohli, former Indian cricket team captain and Player of the Match in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, announced his retirement from the format right after India's historic win over South Africa in the title clash in Barbados on Saturday. Kohli, who has been one of India's best-ever cricketers, said that it was time for the next generation to take over. For a boy who rose from the by-lanes of Delhi to rule world cricket, it was the perfect culmination of a T20I career that saw several highs as well as lows as captain.

“This was my last T20 World Cup, this is exactly what we wanted to achieve,” Kohli told the broadcasters after India ended a 11-ear ICC title drought.

“One day you feel like you can't get a run and this happens, God is great. (It is) just the occasion, now or never kind of situation. This was my last T20 game playing for India. We wanted to lift that cup."

“Yes I have, this was an open secret (retirement). Not something that I wasn't going to announce even if we had lost. Time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward,” Kohli confirmed when asked by Harsha Bhogle if he was making the official announcement about him calling it a day.

“It's been a long wait for us, waiting to win an ICC tournament. You look at someone like Rohit (Sharma), he's played 9 T20 World Cups and this is my sixth.

"He deserves it. It's been difficult to hold things (emotions) back and I think it's going to sink in later. It's an amazing day and I'm thankful,” Kohli added.

Virat Kohli is one of those rare cricketers who have won both the ODI and the T20 World Cup now. Kohli played his first T20I in 2010 and then went on to play several T20 World Cup. But every time, India fell short until the 2024 edition, where Kohli emerged as a saviour after India's horrendous start against South Africa. He scored a gritty 76 off 59 balls as India scored a record high total of 176/7 in a T20 World Cup final.

At the end of his glorious career, Virat Kohli finished with a tally of 4188 in 125 matches at an average of 48.69.

High Arsenic Levels In Chicken Meat Can Kill

There is a lot of debate and a very little consensus on the question that how much amount of arsenic is safe in food – because ideally, there should not be any.
A study led by a research group at the department of community health sciences (CHS) at the AKU (Aga Khan University) and Jichi Medical University of Japan revealed that newborns are most exposed to arsenic from chicken, which has the highest content. The said research identified important sources of lead and arsenic exposure, particularly among newborns, children between the age of one and three years and pregnant women in both countries.

The study found out that in comparison with potatoes and lentils, who were cooked in different utensils, the arsenic content in chicken was five times higher. Note that chicken is a part of our daily nutritional intake as a significant protein source.
“In comparison with potato and lentils cooked in different types of utensils, poultry chicken meat contained 15 times higher concentration of arsenic (between 41ng/g and 47ng/g)” – said Dr Abdul Ghani from AKU.
Chicken meat, particularly chicken liver, contains high arsenic content which can lead to skin diseases, kidney malignant growth and more.
“It’s not one-time eating but frequent consumption of the same food that affects the body as metal traces accumulate in the body” – he added.

Speaking more about the study, Dr Ambreen Sahito told that 60 per cent of newborns and about 90 per cent of children had blood lead levels that exceeded CDC guidelines. It can be seen as a potential risk for lifelong health consequences. 35% of the rural population had an arsenic level more than the WHO (World Health Organization) recommended levels of 10mcg/I.
Blood lead levels were also found higher in women who eat rice regularly. As per the experts, the exposure to lead can be limited by simple home activities like by maintaining hand hygiene and wet mopping.
