In memory of Jonothan Green. Aylesbury Dojo will be running a special event on Wednesday 29th May between 7-9 pm.

To celebrate Jonothan’s love of Karate we will go through all Kyu grade basics, this will be a non-stop blast.

Who’s it for?

It will be for anyone who can punch/kick and block. GI’s will not be compulsory, loose fitting clothes will do.

All dojo fees will be donated to Marie Curie Aylesbury in Jonothan’s name.

Looking forward to seeing you all – Hope the Dojo is big enough!

He took up training at CKA together with his two older sons in January 1998 under the instruction of Sensei Croft and Sensei Erin & Robin Thwaites, and reached 2nd Kyu in March 2002.

He showed great spirit and a good attitude in the dojo. He was always a happy and thoughtful karateka – a pleasure to teach & to train with.

His illness unfortunately forced an early stop to his training. He was a true gentleman and gentle giant and will be missed greatly by all those who had the pleasure to know him.

Rest in peace Jonathan. Our thoughts remain with your family.

The course will provide an insight into the basic principles of Qigong and a Shaolin Qigong form called Ba Duan Jin.

10 a.m. -11.15 a.m.

Course 2 – Brown and Black Belts

The course will focus on specific areas of training to ensure good understanding of the techniques and consistency across Chiltern Karate Association.

11.30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Both courses will be held at the Chesham Dojo (Gymnasium)

The competition is a great opportunity to put your skills to the test in a fun and controlled environment. The emphasis is on giving you experience of competition and you are encouraged to enter. If you cannot take part in the competition, you are welcome and encouraged to come along on the day for vocal support!

The competition is divided into Kata and Kumite categories.

The Kata competition is open to all members – all ages, all grades. You will only be expected to perform Kata matching to your grade.

The Kumite competition is split between men and women and then into the following classes:

• Adults – 4th Kyu and below
• Adults – 3rd Kyu and above
• Juniors  - 4th Kyu and below
• Juniors – 3rd Kyu and above

To enter, each competition category costs £9 for adults and £6 for juniors. You may enter Kata, Kumite or both.

The event starts at 10am at the Chesham dojo. Refreshments will be available.

Entries close on the Thursday 20th September. If you want to enter and haven’t already done so, please speak to your instructor or contact us and let us know.

Competition Rules

Kumite

1. Each match takes place on an area 8m x 8m
2. All matches will be drawn before the event for the competitors to view on arrival
3. One contestant will wear a blue belt & blue gloves and the other a red belt and red gloves
4. Gloves will be provided
5. All contestants must wear a gum shield – this will not be provided! NO GUM SHIELD…….NO FIGHTING!
6. Leg pads and groin protection are optional
7. Each match will last for 2 minutes
8. Each match will be decided by the first contestant to reach full point (IPPON), either by 2 x half points (WAZA-ARI) or 1x full point
9. If at the end of 2 minutes a full point has not been reached, then the highest scoring contestant will win the match
10. The competition will be based on several rounds, with the winner gong through to the next round
11. When 4 x contestants are left, they will go through to the semi-finals and ultimately the final
12. The time keeper will signal when there are 30 seconds remaining.
13. The time keeper will stop the match clock during periods of non-combat
14. If after 2 minutes the scores remain tied, there will be an extension of 1 minute.
15. If after the 1^st extension the scores are still tied, a 2^nd extension of 1 minute will take place, from which the referee(s) must choose a winner if the scores are still tied.
16. There will be 4 x referees (one at each corner of the match area) plus a main referee in the middle of the area.
17. Each corner referee will have a red flag and a blue flag with which to signal scoring techniques
18. For a technique to count, a majority of the 5 x referees must positively score the technique
19. Warnings can be given for multiple reasons – e.g. leaving/stepping out of the match area, excessive contact, techniques to disallowed targets, illegal techniques etc etc
20. Warning structure:-
    1. 1^st warning – no point loss
    2. 2^nd warning – one half point
    3. 3^rd warning – disqualification
21. Warning points and technique points cannot be added together
22. Warning points, apart from disqualification, can only decide a match when the scores are tied.
23. Excessive contact will not be tolerated to any part of the body
24. Scoring areas are:-
    1. Torso
    2. Head
    3. Sides
    4. Lower back
25. Light contact is permissible to the body only
26. Ultra light contact (skin contact) is permissible to the head. If a head technique is controlled but does not quite reach the target due to control, it will still score.
27. All scoring techniques are ultimately at the discretion of the Centre Mat Judge
28. Any deliberate technique to the following areas will result in instant disqualification:-
    1. Groin
    2. Knees
    3. Eyes
    4. Back of head
29. Any blood injury will normally result in disqualification unless at the discretion of the Centre Mat Judge
30. No open hand techniques are allowed

Kata

1. Each match takes place on an area 8m x 8m
2. All matches will be drawn before the event for the competitors to view on arrival
3. One contestant will wear a blue belt and the other a red belt
4. There will be 3 x referees seated in front of the contestants
5. Each referee will have a red flag and a blue flag with which to signal the winning contestant or a draw
6. The centre judge will ask the contestants to bow and then ask the contestants to assume Yoi position
7. The centre judge will then call out a Kata from between Taikyoku Shodan and Heian Godan
8. The contestants will then perform the Kata on the Hajime command
9. At the end of the Kata, the judges will either award the match to Red or Blue, or declare a draw
10. The performances are based on the judge’s opinion of the Kata performance versus the contestant’s level of technical ability. A lower grade performing to their maximum ability will beat a higher grade performing below their maximum ability
11. The centre judge will add up the three scores and award the match accordingly
12. If the match is tied, a 2^nd Kata will be called
13. If the match is tied again, a 3^rd Kata will be called with the instruction that the judges have to decide this round
14. If during the match one contestant makes a mistake and a judge sees the mistake, the judge must immediately focus solely on the other contestant. If the other contestant continues the Kata with no mistakes, even if the technical ability is lower, the other contestant must win
15. If both contestants make a mistake, the contest is scored as per point 10.
16. The choice of Kata called will relate directly to the LOWEST grade i.e. a lowest grade will only be expected to perform a Kata of their grade or below (and not the Kata for their next grading)
17. The competition will be based on several rounds, with the winner gong through to the next round
18. When 4 x contestants are left, they will go through to the final
19. During the final, the contestants will be able to perform ANY Kata.
20. The judges will score the performance out of 6.0 – the combined total of all three judges will decide the winner. The performance will be scored based on point 10.
21. If any scores are tied, the affected contestants will be asked to revert to match conditions (one Kata from between Taikyoku Shodan and Heian Godan) and the winner decided on flags
