Received a letter from Talk Talk Direct this morning, a company I have had no dealings with since 2001. Slightly surprised to find them setting up a direct debit in my current account - phoning the customer sevice number, I’m held in limbo to the dreadful and inappropriate accompaniment of some dirge by Primal Scream for 45 minutes before giving up in disgust. Needless to say, this is one company I will be doing no business with whatsoever in the future.

Zac Goldsmith, Tory candidate for Richmond Park and benefactor of a multi million pound UK property portfolio administered in what can only be described as a ‘slightly unusual’ fashion from the Cayman Islands protests that he has barely benefited at all from the arrangement. Tory Central office robustly declare that it is a “private matter”.

Fact is, his non-domiciled tax status frees him of the obligation to pay capital gains tax or inheritance tax on these properties. Fact is that even the shadow chancellor is campaigning to have this loophole closed. Fact is he’s an old school chum of David Cameron’s….

By some peculiar oversight, the story has not been widely reported in the media - I wonder, could that be because the News Of The World is, like so many other media outlets, owned by Rupert Murdoch? - or could it be because the bullying editor in question was one Andy Coulson, currently employed as communications chief for none other than the prime minister in waiting, David Cameron… lovely people, it’s really going to be a blast…
