I went to a talk last night by Nokia’s Jan Chipchase on street hacks, the phenomenon of mobile phone repair shops in Ghana, China and India (and many other places) where skilled entrepreneurs can do just about anything with your phone. Dual SIM card? Sure. Broken screen? No problem. Want to change the band on which your phone operates? Of course.

There are many aspects to explore in Chipchase’s work, but the one that intrigued me the most was the global network of innovation that’s behind the phenomenon. The mobile phone repair stall in the market in Accra learns a lot by doing, of course, but it’s also connected to Internet-based information and incredibly sophisticated, rapid response publication.

The above picture of a reverse-engineered repair manual was particularly startling. Apparently, you can subscribe to this, and Chipchase reckons it takes about a week from the launch of a new phone to the appearance of the repair manual. A fantastic innovation story.

Google Suspends China Launch Of Motorola and Samsung Android Mobile Phones

Google has issued a statement that it suspending the January 20 launch of its Android mobile phone products in China. The mobiles were developed in cooperation with Motorola and Samsung specifically for the China market and were to use China Unicom as service carrier. This leaves rival carrier China Mobile in position to expand it’s market advantage.

The phones use Google’s open source mobile platform similar to the Nexus One and Droid phones which marketed in the US. Google sources sated that it would be “irresponsible” to start service at a time when the company’s future presence in the country is in question.

Many commentators have tied Google’s threat to leave China with a corporate stance against government censorship and cite the company’s superseded motto “Don’t be evil.” Google has operated under censorship since starting operations in China 2005, and has been working with the government of China to restrict and filter search results in order to gain a foothold in this burgeoning market. Google has implied that the hackers who targeted the email accounts of Chinese dissidents were so sophisticated that they must have had support from some unnamed government.

In a bold act of commercial espionage, the hackers also breached Google’s source code repository, threatening the search giant’s core business.

China Mobile Gets HTC Magic

China Mobile has secured a pre-production unit of the G2 aka HTC Magic in preparation for the handset launch in May. The device is a customized version of the HTC Magic which has undergone extensive modifications to its interface and user specifications to complement the workings of China’s own TD-SCDMA network system. The G2 does not however come with 3G and Wi-Fi features. No information is available on pricing for now.

iPhone launch in China delayed: China Mobile and Apple negotiation failed again

The largest mobile phone operator in the world, China Mobile and maker of the iPhone, Apple have failed to strike a deal again. Talks between China Mobile and Apple to bring the iPhone to China has gone on for about eighteen months. The two parties have had three rounds of talks, which all ended in a stalemate. In the first meeting, Apple demanded 20 to 30 percent of revenue earned from iPhone users from the carrier, China Mobile rejected the proposal.

In the second meeting, Apple offered to sell iPhones to the carrier at $600 per unit with the condition that China Mobile sell the device to end users subsidized with their data plans. This offer also was turned down by China Mobiles.

The last and the most recent negotiation broke down because China Mobiles insisted that the carrier be given the proprietary rights to sell iPhone applications to iPhone users in China. China Mobile asked for administering App Store in China. As a justification of the demand, China Mobile cited that payment mode in China is different from other countries. Sources in China Mobile said that customers in China prefer to make payments from their Mobile account deposits and not through credit cards.

In view of the latest development, it is not known yet whether the two companies are going forward with further negotiations. The launch of the iPhone in China has been further delayed.

DOT (Department of Telecom) government of India due to security reasons has asked the GSM service providers in India to bar service to all mobile phones without valid IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. IMEI Code is used to track the mobile phones globally. The cellular operator can be able to track the location of the mobile handset when the mobiles are using the cell towers. Most of the Mobile hand sets from China that are sold in India which come cheap in price do not have the IMEI Code.

It is estimated that nearly 16 million cell phones in India are not having IMEI Code.

Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and Mobile Standards Alliance of India have jointly developed software to provide IMEI code to the handsets that come without IMEI number (Global code to identify mobile handsets).

Cellular operators association of India has obtained IMEI numbers from GSMA, the global body that allocates these numbers. Mobile Handset owners can get IMEI code at a price of Rs.180/- at nearly 1,600 centres across India set up by COAI. Initially 10 centers were started in New Delhi, and will be extended through out the nation.
