Legendary Chinese authoress Anchee Min (Red Azalea, Becoming Madame Mao and 5 other titles) will be speaking at M-Glamour on June 17th. Anchee wrote an epilogue to my book CHINA: Portrait of a People, so I am really hoping I'll be in town for this event!

Anchee, who was plucked from a labor camp to join the Shanghai Film Studio, and with the help of @[27327686016:274:Joan Chen 陳冲]left for the US.

She is the author of a best-selling memoir, @[106002309431167:274:Red Azalea], and her latest book, Pearl of China, is about Buck.

World of Chinese
The World of Chinese magazine has done me the great honor of naming me "ONE OF THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY EXPLORERS OF CHINA", along with Zheng He (1371), Xu Xiake (1587) and Matteo Ricci (1582), in a multi-page feature in their latest 2012 issue. The story, “Wanderers of the Middle Kingdom,” also includes a very funny illustrated map of my travels (view the scans here).

Even though the Western media has largely chosen, either out of ignorance or editorial elitism, to overlook my accomplishments and body of photographic work, it’s nice to be recognized by my compatriots here in the East.

The article is not online, however you can purchase the issue from the World of Chinese website (lots of other good stuff on there as well).

Now THIS is how you sell books! Following a well-oiled publicity campaign by Penguin Books that included a Time Magazine review (!), the cover of Literary Review, and multiple interviews and coverage in the mass media - all timed perfectly to coincide with his current U.S. book tour - Paul French's new nonfiction book MIDNIGHT IN PEKING is now on the New York Times best-sellers list. This in addition to being optioned as a television series! The publishing industry might be saturated with Twilights and Hunger Games, but every once in a while the suits in New York will go out of their way to promote an actual good book. Congrats to Paul - a very talented writer who has earned this.
