Memorial Day Style Primer

Memorial Day weekend is here and it's sure to be filled with parties, cookouts, beach excursions, etc. I'm going to focus on what I think may be the two most popular; the backyard cookout, and the waterfront clambake. If you get an invite to one of these this weekend, then Ive got a few pointers on how to dress to make sure you bring in the unofficial start of Summer in style.

Cookouts are dangerous territory when it comes to trying to keep yourself clean. You're eating with your hands, on flimsy paper plates, while standing, and possibly a little tipsy (more on that later). Accidents are bound to happen. That's why this madras shirt from Todd Snyder is perfect. Ketchup and mustard drips blend right in. And about the shorts, who says denim shorts are uncool? This pair by the swimwear kings Orlebar Brown begs to differ. It's a soft denim that's been faded to give it a blueish-grey tone. Perfect for wiping your hands on when you drop your napkin.

While I don't partake in nor advocate drinking, I'm aware that there'll probably be plenty of that going on. 99% of the time I'm either drinking water or sugarless coffee. But in the spirit of camaraderie and carbonation, I'll play along and chug some local Ginger-Ale from the family-owned company from Blenheim, SC. They've been making this stuff since the late 1800's from a mineral spring that was stumbled upon in 1721. I think they kinda know what they're doing. They've actually got a pretty cool story.

Some of us will be on grill duty this weekend. Depending on your perspective, you will either get "stuck" on the grill, or you will "get to man" the grill. In either case, you should wear an apron to keep those grease splatters off your clothes. But not a corny "Kiss the Cook" apron. A manly man's apron like this one from Gant Rugger. Each is made from a full sheet of denim fabric so you get the selvedge line at the top and the bottom. There's a YouTube video where the Creative Director of Gant, Christopher Bastin (no relation to Michael Bastian) talk about the apron and how that season's "chef collection" came about.

A slightly different approach is needed because of the different circumstances. Swim trunks are in order since you will be right by the water and it makes it easy to just strip off your shirt and shoes and hop in. A polo by Boast, the iconic tennis brand, is easy to put on and take off with less buttons to fuss with. And you have that collar just begging to be popped to slug it out with the sun. Now I know the sweater is throwing some of you for a loop, but I can assure you, once the sun goes down, that comforting breeze you once had will turn outright chilly, A light cable-knit sweater in a pastel hue does the trick and the fun can last until the sun comes back up again.

A proper tote is the best place to hold your belongings like a good book, your camera, and the ultimate condiment. To go along with the oysters, crab, lobster, shrimp, etc, some homegrown tartar sauce from a husband and wife out of Mount Pleasant, SC is the unrivaled icing on the cake. Do yourself a favor and bring your own bottle and keep it close. Things like that can mysteriously go missing.

UNIQLO x Michael Bastian Release

About a month ago, the #Menswear blogosphere lit on fire with the news of a collaboration on the horizon between UNIQLO, the Japanese retailer with a high quality looks at low prices, and 7-time Menswear designer of the year nominee Michael Bastian. Collaborations aren't exactly a new thing for the fashion industry but as of late its been happening more often. Some of the notable ones over the past few were Karl Lagerfeld x H&M, Rodarte x Target, and Jil Sander x UNIQLO. It normally ends up being pretty profitable for both parties. And it gives the customer the opportunity to own something with the stamp of a high end designer at a lower tiered price. For example, a Michael Bastian polo will cost you between $200-$300. The polos for this collab will be sold for $20.

When I heard the news of the upcoming collection of polos that would be made, I was beyond excited and I immediately circled the date of May 20...release day. Well its here now, and I'm jacked about it. Perhaps its because I'm a little biased towards Mr. Bastian because hes been my favorite designer for the past 3 years or so. Or maybe its because I've developed a secret man-crush on him (don't tell my wife). But its probably because hes arguably been the top menswear designer for the past 5 years and doesn't look to be loosing any steam as he's been nominated again this year for CFDA menswear designer of the year. Hes a strong favorite although there's some tough competition with Thom Browne on the ballot with his plaid and whales presentation last summer.

And while I would love to scoop up all 16 polos in the collection, I doubt my wife would co-sign that decision. But please believe that come the end of the week, there will be at least 3 of these on my doorstep. Hyde Park Polo Spring Match 2013

Another Spring match is in the books. It was a very big turnout that actually surprised me considering it was Mother's Day. It just goes to show that the Charleston community is hungry for more polo. It's my hope that this will become a normal Sunday afternoon thing eventually. But for now, we'll have to settle for once or twice a year. Anyway, I was there to capture some of the stylish guys and gals.

My wife and I. I didn't realize it when I picked out my outfit, but the majority of it was thrifted over time. Jeans, tie and blazer were a grand total of $15. Remember, style isn't about the price tags.

Polo Match Style Primer

This coming Sunday is the annual Spring Invitational polo match in Ravenell, SC. While the sport of polo is known as the sport of kings, its also known for its ability to attract a ritzy crowd. But since the sport has recently been brought to the area after almost a 25 year hiatus due to Hurricane Hugo, its very understandable that the folks in the area may have some indecisiveness on what to wear. When I invite my friends to the matches in Aiken (one of the top polo communities in the world) the first thing they always ask is "What do I wear?" The second question is "How do they play it?" Check here for the answer to the second question. As for the answer to the first, just keep reading. I present to u my polo match style primer.

On a budget
Just because you're on a tight budget doesn't mean you can't still be stylish. The polo grounds is a great place to meet a potential wife. Its a family event so she'll probably be there with her folks. So you want to make a good impression on Dad. It's really not hard. Crisp polo shirt, well fitting chinos, and a pair of boat shoes that nearly everyone in the south owns, and your set. Now all you have to do is remember, firm handshake, and look em in the eye.

So I totally understand there are people who could care less about the fashioney/social side of polo and they're just there to see some extremely athletic horses. Well I've got you guys covered too in a total unfashioney (read understated) way. If you actually work on a farm then most of this stuff you probably already have. Essentially it's just a good pair of 501's, boots, plaid shirt, and a sweet hat courtesy of Orvis to block out the sun.

I'm not really sure who the "hybrid" guy is but I will say that he relates the closest to me. Sort of like a combination of bits and pieces from different styles that you have made your own. If you haven't the slightest clue which direction to go then this will probably be your safest bet. This glen plaid blazer will go with anything so really you can mix and match any colors you want.

Wealthy Tycoon

There's a stigma on wealthy guys :they have horrible style. The reason they all use is "I'm my own boss so I don't care how I look" which is a terrible mentality in my opinion. Also, if your excited about growing your wealth, then one of the easiest ways is through networking and partnering with others. And let's face it, no one wants to work with a slob. You should look like what you're worth. People don't realize it but the polo grounds rival the golf links as one the best places for networking and deal making. Don't miss out on an opportunity because of how you look. Because honestly, many times people take you seriously based on what you have on more than what's in your bank account. First of all, start with an expertly tailored suit in the right shade of grey. Ice blue dress shirt topped with a classic Hermes tie. Nothing less than Gucci loafers on your feet will do. And in my opinion, the best way to hold your pants up is with an alligator belt from Mr Lauren.

When reviewing all of these looks, the most important thing to remember is that this post is intended for inspiration, not replication. If you wear something that doesn't fit your personality then its just a costume. And that totally goes against everything I believe. What will I be wearing? Guess Who's Back

So remember the post I did roughly year ago about this awesome bakery that was closing down and fell into a deep gorge never to return? Well guess what, they have risen up like a Phoenix from the ashes. Ever So Sweet Bakery is back at a new location, with a new warm and cozy feel. And what looks to be a slightly extended menu.

About a month or so ago I saw them making posts on Facebook about them making a comeback. So I kept checking back for a grand reopening date and that special day was this past Wednesday. I was really happy to see them back in business, especially a few miles closer to my house. My family and I went to check in on them over the weekend to show some love. I got caught up with the staff to get some feelings on their first week back.

So for those asking what happened last year, what happened?

"Basically, the widening of Dorchester Road happened. We were aware ahead of time that it was going to take place, and took necessary precautions with our lease. We were worried that it would deter people from our area, and it definitely did. Along with that, our place was huge! And the cost that comes with that is a bit much. We wanted to find something smaller and cozy."

How does it feel to be back?

"It feels wonderful! It's so great to see familiar faces, and to be back in the kitchen. I so missed baking all day. Even though we are all exhausted from a long week, it's so worth it. I love baking so much, and it's so rewarding to create things from scratch everyday, and see people enjoy them!"

How long have you been baking and what keeps you turning on that oven every day (besides good ole electricity)?

"I have been baking since I was little. I never really though about it as a career, until I went to college. I was a graphic design major, and I had one class in the big main building. I took a wrong turn one day and passed the baking classrooms. I was amazed, and instantly fell in love with the idea of going to school for pastry. One week later, I changed my major, not being able to imagine sitting behind a computer for the rest of my life. I have loved every minute of the past 5 years."

The new space is decorated beautifully, what was the thought or inspiration behind it?

"Thank you! I wanted to stay with our original colors, blue and brown, but I wanted to have the colors a little more mellow, and that's where the dusty blue and taupe came from. I wanted it to be cozy and inviting. I've always loved the idea of a bar, and we had great space for it at the end. We of course kept our amazing photos, taken by a good friend of mine, David Collins. And we love chalkboards. My mom is a wonderful artist and does all of my chalkboards. We love to keep people updated with what we're doing."

You guys have an interesting location being on the same block as Publix. I have friends that go on and on about how awesome their bakery is. I say it's overrated. Express to my friends and anyone else that feels the same why they should support local businesses like yourself (besides almost always being more awesome than the big franchises).

"Well, as great as Publix is, (as being so fully staffed, and being able to put out everything that they do everyday) I must say that there is something different about baking everything on site. I worked at Publix for a few months and I confess I know most of their secrets when it comes to the bakery. I pride myself in baking fresh items as fast as my body will allow me. I love to have fresh items for my customers. Large corporate companies like that have to make things in large facilities off site, freeze them, and then transport them. Otherwise, they would probably have to triple their already large staff. Besides that, we have always supported small businesses. My father owns a small business, and my mother and sister just recently closed theirs. So coming from a family of entrepreneurs, it's in my blood. I love knowing that I'm supporting someone like me, who works hard, takes pride in their business, and needs my business to take home a paycheck and put dinner on the table for their family."

Anything else you want to say to the community of sweets lovers out there?

"Come visit us! You'll never know until you try it! We make a mean cream cheese pound cake, and usually cannot bake them fast enough, haha. We would love people to come visit! We have wifi, so come bring your homework or paperwork, get something sweet, and hang out with us! We love seeing happy faces who love sweets, like you!! "

I was totally blown away when they told me that they used my post that they stumbled upon months after it was published as inspiration for a return.

It's a family owned business that takes pride in what they do. According to their website, everything is made from scratch daily. With no preservatives, and unbleached flour. I'm pretty jacked up that these guys are back. My cheat days just got a little more exciting!!

Spring Essential/Trends Pt.5: Unlined Blazers

This last essential will most likely end up being one of your more expensive purchases of the season. However, its one that will stay with you for quite some time. It will become your best friend when daily highs begin to live above 85. It will keep you looking and feeling cool as a cucumber while everyone else is begging for mercy. I'm not talking about an in-ground pool. I'm referring to the unlined blazer; the secret weapon of Summer Style.

Merona $40

An unlined blazer is simply a blazer with no inner lining. If there's no lining then that's one less layer that keeps the heat in. And that makes it much more bearable to wear, especially when its made out of a highly breathable fabric (like most of these are). And they will normally cost you a little more than a regular sport coat will because there has to be more attention to detail in the finishing. Normally you can do just a quick stitch job because the lining will cover it up. But with no lining to hide it, it takes more man hours to manufacture clean finishings. This $40 version from Target above? It's a freak of nature. I don't know how they can afford to make it so cheap.

Apolis $248

Even though the use of olive isn't as widespread as navy or khaki, it's just as versatile. If you don't believe me, I dare you to try to find something this doesn't go with. It will be a lot less than you think.

Junya Wantanabe $575

Every season, this Japanese brand is one of the runway shows I look forward to seeing most. Especially their Spring shows because there's so much color. It would make you think that these guys grew up on the beach. This seersucker will feel right at home in Charleston too.

Billy Reid $625

Billy Reid is headquartered in Florence, Alabama, so you knew they were gonna figure out how to look cool in the heat. This one is made from linen which is one of the lightest, most breathable fabrics there is.

Gant Rugger $650

The pattern on this one is nuts. Pure geezer style if you ask me. If a trip to Italy is in your plans for this Summer, take this with you. I promise you'll fit right in and people will be asking you for directions like "How far is the Uffizi from here?"

Paul Smith $900

This is the unlined blazer for the boardroom. Your colleagues will wonder why they're miserable and you look cool and refreshed. If they ask, just tell em its because you're more awesome than they are.

After six months of seeing lifeless, bare trees, this next trend helps remind everyone that blooming season is here. Looking to add a little punch around your neck? Cop yourself a floral tie.

It is THE accessory of the season. Extremely fun to wear and youre bound to get a ton of compliments.This one is pretty much strictly for the weekends. But if you get one in with a dark base shade like the one above, you may be able to get away with it in the office. Many brands have jumped on the bandwagon so there's plenty to choose from. But I'll help narrow down those options.

The all-around-go-to-for-inexpensive-perfection does it again.

Hentsch Man $75

Even though I've never been to Hawaii, this tie just gives me a Hawaiian feeling. Actually, thats what the brand calls this model; Hawaii Skinny Tie.

Ted Baker $99

Upon further review, this is another one that you could possibly get away with in the office. Just always be sure to check the "climate" of your office's dress code.This one is simply beautiful to me. This British brand has definitely hit the mark with this one. Such a lovely shade of blue.

Kenneth Beatrice $100

One of Charleston's local designers, Chelsie Ravenell has 4 different versions of floral ties to his name. "The London Floral Tie" as he calls this one, is my favorite. It's like a bouque on your chest.

Spring Essentials/Trends Pt.3: White Canvas Sneakers

After wearing boots and wingtips all Winter, it's time to give the feet a break. Let them enjoy a change of pace and lighten the load a bit. How do you do that? If your answer is flip flops then I'm going to kindly ask you to walk off a steep cliff into a river of man-eating crocodiles ala' Indiana Jones. I'm talking about getting yourself a pair of white canvas sneakers. Canvas is much lighter than leather. And with them being cut at such a low profile, plenty of breeze is allowed to circulate around your ankles. By the way, no socks with these please. Last point of emphasis; you can wear em casually or you can dress them up (as seen in the split shot). Wear them to everything (outside the office) except a funeral. Keds are classics. They've been around forever. You've probably had a pair when you was in elementary school. The stripes on the sole give them a little character. And the suckers are dirt cheap checking in just under a Grant (that's a 50 dollar bill)

These are another pair of classics. Originally made famous on the tennis court, I believe. They come in an array of colors but the colorway that they call "white & pea coat" is my favorite.

Billy Reid x K-Swiss $85

The reigning Menswear Designer of the year has collaborated with K-Swiss to put out a small selection of understated wonders. They used to be the butt of a lot of jokes when I was in school. Mr. Reid has helped to give them more stylish credibility.

Maison Kitsune $225

If I had my pick of the litter it would be these elegant babies from Maison Kitsune (pronounced Kit-soo-ney). The French brand is relatively new on my radar as I've really only started paying attention to them over the past year. But they put out some really good looking stuff. I love the script on the back and the gold eyelets are a nice touch.

Final Note

The biggest thing to remember about white canvas sneakers is to forget what you learned when you were younger. It's no longer necessary to keep your white shoes blindingly white. I say ''wear without care''. They tend to look better to me when there's a little life shown on them. And it makes you look less stuffy. I only wash mine once a year. And then I run em in the ground during the Spring and Summer, put em up when it gets cold, and I start the cycle all over again.

Spring Essentials/Trends Pt.2: Man Trunks

For part 2 of this series I'll be shedding some light on what I like to call "Man Trunks". The way things work in the Southeast is that we kind of skip the 70 degree weather days. It's just a satanic transition from the 50's to the 80's. That basically means we're now in beach season. Hopefully you guys have been taking care of your bodies during the Winter. I know it's tough and extremely unfun. But there are grand dividends and one of them is being able to properly pull off this next essential.

You don't have to be ripped to the max, but it does help if you're in decent shape like this 35 year old Sean Connery. And even if you have a few soft spots around the midsection then I think these can work for you as well.

A few important keys to keep in mind.

1. Don't be afraid to show some leg. Trunks that stop around mid-thigh are perfect. They make your legs look longer which makes you look taller which makes you look leaner....which is a pretty good combination.

2. At all cost, avoid elastic waistbands. They do this whole parachute thing that is extremely unflattering. Especially if you've got soft spots. The elastic band just squeezes everything in at the wrong spot. Can you say instant muffin top? What about super back fat? Instead you should look for one that are cut in a straight line, almost looks like a pair of pants would; like all the ones I picked out.

3. Lastly, try to kill two birds with one stone. It's not a must but if you can find one in a neutral color like navy or khaki, then they could double as walking shorts. It would help to cut down on packing if you could wear the same trunks in the ocean and at the seaside restaurant and not have to change.

JCrew, the place to go to find simple examples of everything and a relatively affordable price. These 5''portofino trunks are the perfect start and they come in about 5 different colors. If you're on a budget and don't know where to look, these would be your best bet.

Saturdays Surf NYC $75

A surf shop born in Manhattan? Sounds crazy but these guys do a jam-up job at it. The company is only about 4 years old but they've already made a strong name for themselves in the swimwear industry.

Sundek $120

I was turned onto Sundek a few years ago. They had their hayday back in 70's are relevant again delivering shorts in the same rainbow stripes that made them famous over 40 years ago. If classic retro design is your thing, then these are for you.

Orlebar Brown $240

If money is no object then your search should begin and end with Orlebar Brown. These guys really get it. Extremely simple design and a tailored fit. Made with 100% polyamide, an extremely quick-drying material that absorbs less water and dries up to 6 times faster. You know how you normally feel about 40 pounds heavier when you first step out the water? Well, you wont feel it with these. And in this Navy color, they can pass as regular shorts so you can wear em all day long ala tip#3.

And Lastly....

The skies have finally opened up for us in Charleston and spring is finally here. Time to break all the fun clothes you had stored away since September. Its also time to do a little refining of the wardrobe. I'll be doing a quick 5-part series on my 5 top essentials for the Spring of 2013. First up; Novelty Shirts.

What the heck is a novelty shirt? Simply put, its just an ordinary buttondown made not-so-ordinary by getting covered in a zany, in-your-face pattern. Could be florals, geometric shapes, animals, just about anything. As always, my motto remains when wearing something that commands so much attention as these shirts, you must keep the rest of the look understated.

Below I've found a few in a range of prices. Don't be shy, have a little fun. Add one of these to your warm weather wardrobe see how much you love it.

Banana Republic $89

If you're still a little wary about jumping on this trend, then this is the perfect starter shirt. Something with a tonal design isn't very in-your-face but it still packs some character. And It's one of the least expensive ones I found.

Brooks Brothers Black Fleece $175

Everyone's heard of Brooks Brothers but I'm pretty sure a lot less have heard about their coked-up younger brother that they keep in the closet. Black Fleece has been around since 2007 and is headed up by the highly touted Thom Browne. If you know anything about his namesake line, then the analogy makes perfect sense.

Paul Smith is one of the biggest names in British Menswear. Known for his very lively aesthetic, he provides many opportunities to buy into this trend.

In the year 2013 there's very little use for cash anymore. And with so many perks companies throw around for swiping cards, it's made cash borderline obsolete. Now I'm not a moron, I know there are many places that only take cash. But they are few a far in between. But just in case, it's OK to carry around a few $20's. But all those extras are what makes the wallet size balloon to ridiculousness. All the family photos, phone numbers, business cards, Blockbuster cards, gym membership cards, Panera Bread cards, Bi-Lo cards, etc. Just unnecessary. The modern man has tossed his tri-fold wallet in the garbage and has employed the card wallet. Inside should be no more than your driver's licence, 1 debit card, and 1 credit card. And 2 or 3 $20's. All those other membership cards you used to carry, they're all connected with your phone number. As long as you can remember those 10 digits then theres no need to be carrying all those cards around.

A slim card wallet also helps to keep the slim trousers you should be wearing streamlined. Nothing worse than having a huge bulge on your butt. I know it may be hard to downsize, but its for your own good. And it will save your spine. Make the switch and you will notice the difference immediately. It'll be like going from sitting on a boulder to a sheet of paper. So for those of you looking to make the switch, I've included a few different options in multiple price points. So you've already seen what I thought to be the Top 10 looks of fashion week. But there were also quite a few looks that while they weren't strong enough to make the list, but they had some singular pieces that packed a powerful punch and deserved to be noted. Picking the original top 10 from over 40 collections was tough. Here's what ended up on the cutting room floor. I call these the "Best of the Rest"...

So another New York Fashion Week has come to a close. I took the liberty of scanning through roughly 45 or so different menswear collections that were presented to give you guys what I believe to be the top 10 looks of the week. In no particular order, here they are...

1. Billy Reid

Reigning Menswear Designer of the Year Billy Reid didn't miss a beat with this collection. It was very difficult trying to choose looks from this show because the were all so solid. I finally narrowed it down to this one because of the use of browns, a color that I normally avoid because it would just wash me out. But one lighter people, it can be magical.

2. David Hart

David Hart, a designer Ive honestly never heard of before this week killed it with this green shawl-collar tux jacket. I was actually thinking to myself, over the past two years many have been swapping out the black tux jackets for navy. I thought, "I wonder how a deep green would look." Looks like me and this guy were on the same page.

3. JCrew

JCrew typically does textured cardigans very well. And this is no exception. The heavyweight trousers and perfect-shade-of brown boots make this a very solid look.

4. Michael Bastian

So this season Michael Bastian, whom I might add is my absolute favorite designer, took a complete left turn from his preppy New England aesthetic. He took inspiration from the dark and somber paintings of Andrew Wyeth. This is the most I've ever seen him use black. I personally don't incorporate much black in my wardrobe, but I must say, this show goes a long way in adjusting my views of it.

5. Ovadia & Sons

Ovadia and Sons have a thing for the Black Watch pattern and it shows with this over sized shawl scarf thingy going on here. And the pattern mixing with a different plaid on the suit is genius.

6. Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger continues the strong run he's had over the past few years with a predominately plaid collection. This look I feel had the best use of it. Looks to be fully lined with the fur so it allows you to not have to dress so heavily underneath it. Neat little "racing stripe" along the center of the sweater I found to be clever.

7. Nautica

This greyed-out look from Nautica was a smash for me. This is for the sharpest guy at the Aspen ski lodge.

8. Michael Bastian

Another solid look from the Michael Bastian show. This is more along the lines of what I'm used to seeing from my favorite designer. Great use of colors and a good mix of fabrics.

9. Ovadia & Sons

When I came across this look, my jaws dropped open. The looks-to-be brown houndstooth peacoat took my breath away. And the green trousers were the nail in the coffin.

10. Nautica

This look made the list because of the great use of the Spring-colored pants in a Winter look. Toggle coats are trending and the blue fur provides an awesome contrast and pop.

Honorable Mention: Billy Reid

OK so this is number 11. But I couldn't let this one land outside of my top 10 because it was the top Womenswear look of the predominately Menswear shows. I did the florals and the shear sleeves are a nice touch. This just goes to show that the reigning Menswear Designer of the Year knows a thing or two about Womenswear as well.

CFW 2013 Emerging Designers Party

This past Saturday night I was invited to celebrate a new class of emerging designers in the Southeast. This event was designed to give a sneak peak at their collections as there was a slideshow of some of their sketches on a projection screen. It was an awesome night to give us a taste of the designers who will be competing at Charleston Fashion Week in March.

Needless to say, if it's a fashion event then there are bound to be a plethora of stylish guys and gals. Scroll down to see who I thought were the standouts of the night.

As humans we tend to take the world around us for granted, we make our lives larger than the universe. I aspire to reverse that.

The Wonderful World of Layering

I want to welcome you all to the wonderful world of layering. In here its filled with many different colors, textures, and...layering. But don't rush in too quick young lads. For there are a few minor rules that you must adhere to. I'll give you a quick breakdown so that you wont get buried by the wrong layers (ha, I made a funny).

Rule 1: Start small and build your way up.

The first layer should always be the thinnest. It just makes sense to do it that way. How hard would it be to throw a t-shirt over a sweater? Besides, even if you could do it, you'd look utterly ridiculous. Every time you add a layer it, should be a little heavier than its predecessor. Think of each piece having a "grade" or "level" number for thickness. You always start with your smaller levels and then work your way up.

Rule 2: No repeats.

Keeping with the same "grade/levels" analogy, never repeat grades. Its a waste of time and space. For example, a cardigan has no business being placed on top of a sweater. They're both on the same level and they're both typically made out of wool. To me it would just present an unflattering look. There are way too many other options you have to choose from.

Rule 3: Get textured

This is the time to have yourself a texture party. I think it creates a more interesting look. For example here: you have the denim shirt, cable-knit sweater, tweed blazer, and nylon down vest. Also you can have fun with the colors too. Here I have a few shades of blues and greens, then pops of red. And for some added character there's all kinds of speckled colors in the blazer (a Harris Tweed trademark).

So there you have it. 3 Quick rules to layering. I hate when its 30 degrees out and I go to a friends house and their thermostat is set to 80....thank God for my layers. Or when its 30 degrees in the morning and 70 by noon, thank Sweet Baby Jesus for my layers. Or if your out on a date and your lady gets the chills, you have an extra layer to lend to her, thank you Holy Ghost for telling my to layer up tonight. So whatever your situation, you should always be prepared this time of year.

Charleston's New Class of Gentlemen

It's the #1 city in the country to visit, a cultural tourist destination with historical tours, cruise ships and now plenty of fanny packs. Peel back the commercial pomp and circumstance, and you'll find a passionate local community and yes, fashion. Charleston's Southern charm is well documented, as well as its perception of southern style, even with a thriving yearly fashion week, the men's style in the Holy City portrayed in magazines, blogs and TV is fairly fabricated. It's hard to swallow, but the fact is, bow-ties and long ties are still mostly only seen at weddings and other special occasions. The southern man has a "newer" long standing uniform that needs to go - Khakis, polo shirts, Costa del Mar's on croakies, sandals or the ugly version of Sperry's, visors if their super douchey, North Face fleece if cold - done.

Don't think this means you need to rush and call 911 for a fashion emergency, the men's fashion in the low country has taken a shift for the better in the past couple years which means there's still hope. Retail plays a big part in what men wear, in Charleston, newer downtown additions like Billy Read and Indigo & Cotton have brought in new collections of clothing that weren't options before. These shops with modern fitted more dapper menswear have a new class of fashion forward gentlemen dressing the part. New comer Desmond Kinlaw isn't playing games, voted one of Charleston's most stylish early 2012, he's since launched his personal style Chinos and Cheesecake and is taking on the men's style front full force. He's banded together a few fellow Charleston based dandies for the most dapper of afternoon meals followed by cocktails captured by non-other than the King of Southern Streets Style, David Verde! I'm certainly no stranger to sharp dressing, but happily made myself at home behind the camera while Kinlaw and his crew took the spot light and showed off some ankle.

It might be a short commencement this year, but often the first group of graduates are in small numbers. It's only a matter of time till more Low Country men will become alum of the new wave of men's fashion elite.

Without further ado, here's to Charleston's New Class of gentlemen, class of 2012.

Black Friday 101

I'd like to believe in my heart of hearts that there are only two real reasons why people don't dress well. They either "A", don't want to/don't think its important (its very important actually). Or "B", cant afford to (although thrift stores kinda remove this excuse as well). If you're sartorially challenged because of the latter, then the major shopping event this week is for you. What? Been living under a rock for the past 4 decades? Or have you just been really lasered in trying to figure out a 7-letter word for The Andy Griffith Show's creator (it's Stander)?

The term "Black Friday" was originally coined back in 1869, referring to the financial crisis. Not a very festive thought huh? It wasn't until the 1961 when it was used as a shopping reference. They noticed that there was an overload of vehicle and pedestrian traffic occurring the day after Thanksgiving. People were out in droves. The police officers dreaded this day and they started referring to it as such. The reason being is because back in those times, advertisers didn't leapfrog Thanksgiving like a forgotten orphan child. They respected and addressed it accordingly. These days, Christmas ads are posted on November 1. So it made perfect sense that in those times when Thanksgiving was officially over, everyones focus then immediately turned to Christmas. And it turned into one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Another reason is because it was when most retailer's bottom lines went into the "black"(they're finally turning a profit for the year).

Fast forward to the 21st century. Black Friday is still a huge day to score some steals. $400 iPads, large screen TVs for $150, etc. All your major department and electronic stores are cashing in. But what about fashion retailers? Yep, they're cashing in too. So as I stated before, this is one of the best times to revamp your wardrobe. My wife and I have been taking advantage of this for the past 5 years, so we'd like to consider ourselves very knowledgeable on this subject. After all, one of the mottos I live by is "Try, Fail, and Adjust". Here are some tips to maximize this week:

1. Look through your wardrobe to see what "holes" you have. It would be best to start there. Then look to see if there is anything you would like to add.

2. On the Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving, go to either your local mall or outlet. These places will be your best bet because all of the stores will be within walking distance as opposed to having to drive from point A to point B. Getting stuck in traffic, and all that other hoopla. But anyway, visit these places before Thanksgiving with your list in hand to "scout out" which stores have what you're looking for. Also take time to try stuff on now so that when the big night comes, you can be in and out and onto another store. The lines for the fitting room can be ridiculous that night. And the checkout lines will just keep getting longer and longer.

3. When you're there early, you will notice that there are things that are already on sale. Find a friendly looking employee and ask them if it will be the exact same sale on Black Friday. Believe it or not, sometimes it is. And sometimes it'll only be a matter of there being an extra 5% off on the big night. You then make a decision on whether or not its worth it to loose 30-45 minutes of your life standing in line to save an extra $10. I value my time a lot more than that. So I would just get it early. So you can just get it then and have one less store to go to. Because remember, the lines just get longer and longer. One thing to be aware of though, no matter how friendly the employee looks, they're going to say "I'm not allowed to tell you" the first time you ask. Just keep asking, But don't be a jerk about it. Use some people skills. If they look like they're getting annoyed, just drop it. But essentially, I believe that even though a ton of floor salesman in stores don't care about customers, there are some who enjoy it. Those are the ones you're looking for. And don't be afraid to check online too. There are some rare occasions where you can order things at the same sale price in the stores. Once again, creating one less store you have to go to.

4. Call ahead to find out when stores open. I've found that lately, stores have been opening earlier and earlier. To the point that its not even officially Friday yet. And whatever time the store says they will open, be sure to get there about an hour earlier. Because it never fails, if they see a long line out, they will unlock those doors 15 minutes early.

So a quick review, make a list, go early to scout, politely badger an employee for information, and get in line early on the big night.

Being that I love new clothes, this is an exciting time for me. And if you're trying to score some high dollar pieces for the low, then you should be excited too. So happy shopping, Happy Thanksgiving, and above all be safe. There are some nuts out there.

Roanoke, VA Tweed Run: The Ride

A few days ago I did a post on the pre-ride social at the Roanoke, Va Tweed Run. Today I'll show you guys some pictures of the actual ride.

We started slightly outside the city and finished up downtown. All in all it was a little over five miles. A simple ride that any beginner could do. So for someone like me, who's normally knocks out 10-20 miles on a stationary bike 3 times a week, it was a breeze. So I took on the challenge of attempting to snap photos while riding. Well, it nearly backfired. I haven't been on a "real" bike since high school, nearly 10 years ago. So for the first 2 blocks of the ride, I was almost certain I was gonna ruin my vintage Harris Tweed blazer on the asphalt. But I quickly found my "bike legs", and soon after I was snapping photo after photo.

Right before the end of the ride, we stopped at a historic train station to snap a quick photo. Then we headed to Flanary's, an Irish pub in downtown. Apparently its a tweed ride custom to fellowship over a round of beers at the end of the ride. But being that I don't drink, I made an effort to join them and had some beer battered onion rings. Which unlike other places that offer the same, weren't overpowered by a "beery" taste. And I washed it down with a shepherd's pie. First time I've ever had it, and I was not disappointed.

So there you have it folks. This their second year putting on this event. And I'd say it turned out pretty well. I'm already looking forward to next year. I'm also contemplating taking on the task of doing this awesome event in Charleston. Anybody wanna help? Leave a comment below. Roanoke, VA Tweed Run: Pre-Ride Social

This past weekend I crossed a few borders to the north to take part in Roanoke's second annual Tweed Run. Organized by David Verde, street style photographer and writer for Angel's Point of View, a tweed run is basically where one dresses in tweed and partakes in a group ride with a predetermined route.

It was a gorgeous morning. Meet up and registration was at Too Many Books, a locally owned bookstore in Roanoke. There everyone hung out and had coffee and tea to warm their bones (temperatures hovered in the 40s) and socialized with fellow riders. Below are pics of the tweeded-out participants. Fall/Winter Checklist: Down Vest

For the days when you're dressed casually and a denim jacket or sport coat just wont keep you warm enough, I would advise employing a down vest to knock out the extra layer of chill.

A down vest is usually made of nylon on the exterior. It gets its name from the down feathers that are stuffed on the inside. What are down feathers? Down is a fine layer of feathers found under the tougher outside feathers on birds. They can be obviously be used in clothing. And also you may recognise the term from your comforter and pillows.

The work perfectly because they're a cinch to put on and take off since there are no sleeves. But add a surprising amount of warmth where it counts most. Your arms will be fine, they're only extremities, but keeping the chest warm is whats important. Ever seen Batman Begins (see 3:29)?

A few points on fit; down vests are normally cut a little larger because they're made to go over pieces of outerwear. However, I feel like in doing that, they allowed too much room and the result is a boxy silhouette. I recommend going a size down (get it?) to ensure a nice snug fit. The end seams on the shoulders should line up pretty close to what you're wearing underneath. And on the color, mid to deep blues and mid to deep greens go with everything. If you're feeling like an explorer then a canary yellow or safety orange would be a nice touch. And if your feeling festive then blow part of (or all) of your paycheck on a blackwatch number from Ovadia and Sons (see below).

Fall/Winter Checklist: Cable-Knit Shawl Collar Cardigan

One of the most versatile pieces on this checklist is the cable knit shawl collar cardigan. Cardigans in general were named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan, James Thomas Brudenell, a British military commander during the Crimean War of the mid-1800s. But they were actually popular long before then with the Frenchmen and the British Islanders. Back in the 17th century, the fisherman there needed something to wear that would keep them warm during those grueling days on the open water, but it also had to provide them with a wide range of motion so they could efficiently do their jobs. Because of their insulating warmth and unmatched flexibility, the sweater knitting industry hit a major boom during those times in the fishing communities.

Fast-forwarding to today, there are so many different ways to wear it. You can be casual with jeans and an oxford shirt. Or smart casual with trousers, dress shirt, and tie. Or if you get one a size up, you can treat as an overcoat and wear it on top of your suit jacket.

Another big plus is that it walks that fine line as being elegant with the shawl collar, but also rugged and textured by being cable-knit. So it says you're a classy guy, but you don't take yourself too seriously.

So if you're looking for one that one piece of clothing that will keep you warm in the office (dress code permitting), the bar, or the open waters, a shawl collared cable-knit cardigan will put you where you want to be. Euro fisherman's license not required.
