Hibino spoke to a room full of attentive listeners as he went over the basics of the business world, starting from the initial bow to when an invoice is issued.

“You should not talk about money,” stated Hibino, who approached the subject playfully. “It’s not really polite to say, ‘How much can you do?’”

According to Hibino, the game music business is very similar to the one in the United States, except that composers are paid based on an estimated budget. A musician may not receive any money until much later, and may even need to follow-up after a project to make sure he or she gets paid. In Japan, it’s also possible to obtain the copyright for the music, so that the musician can receive royalties from the soundtrack but not the game.

The market for video game soundtracks is relatively small, considering that if a soundtrack is released alongside a game, only three to five percent of buyers will purchase the music CD as well. Publishers in Japan generally add an incentive with the soundtrack to entice gamers, similar to what Atlus does in the United States when bundling a free soundtrack along with a pre-order.

Hibino knows all the marketing tricks and uses his business savvy to run GEM Impact, a studio of composers who work on a wide variety of projects. He began GEM Impact in 2005 in order to have more control over the entire process.

Today, as part of Satoru Iwata’s Game Developers Conference keynote address, Nintendo officially confirmed that The After Years will join Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord on the Wii’s original game-download service, WiiWare, this year.

Released in Japan for mobile phones in February 2008, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years continues the storyline first established in the highly acclaimed role-playing game originally released for the Super NES in 1991. The After Years will follow the travails of Ceodore, the son of original protagonists Cecil and Rosa. didn’t delve into the particulars of the storyline, only saying that Ceodore will cross tracks with a number of returning characters from the original FFIV.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks follows on the heels of the hugely popular DS game Phantom Hourglass, and though details are sparse at this time, Nintendo has released a trailer that shows off a few of the new features. There is one concrete bit of information that is sure to delight eager fans, though: Spirit Tracks is set to come out later this year.

The cel-shaded art style from Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass returns in Spirit Tracks. Although Nintendo has not confirmed where this falls in the Zelda timeline, it appears as though this is a sequel to Phantom Hourglass. If true, this would be the first time a Zelda storyline has continued for three straight . We’ll have to wait for Nintendo to fill us in on the plot details, but at the very least, this is an aesthetical sequel that seems to be every bit as charming as the that preceded it.

In November of that year, his firm did just that with the launch of the . Insanely popular from the get-go, the console was nearly impossible to find at retailers during its first year on the market.

Now that it’s in ample supply, the routinely trounces its competitors, having sold more than 750,000 units in the US in February alone, according to the NPD Group. The DS also continues to shatter records, topping worldwide shipments of 100 million units earlier this month. Once mocked, the dual-screen handheld now has seven software titles that have sold at least 10 million units.

However, the ’s success has come at a price. Hardcore audiences have charged that the console panders to nongamers with lowest-common-denominator minigame collections and quasi-games such as Fit. More important to the audience at the 2009 Game Developers Conference is the fact that the company developing the most popular and DS games is…Nintendo. The prevalence of first-party hits for both platforms has meant tough times for Western third-party publishers already battered by the worldwide economic downturn.

It is against this checkered backdrop that Iwata took the stage this morning to deliver his GDC 2009 keynote address. Titled “Discovering New Development Opportunities,” the speech was billed by the event’s organizers as outlining “Nintendo’s role in creating better tools and bringing opportunities for developers to introduce their innovative ideas to a marketplace that is increasingly willing and eager to embrace new game-design possibilities.”
