My Birthday Challenge

So glad I reach the Changi Village at 835pm .the feet were so sore and painful, but a great walk. Clocking 42000 step.

Today was quite the adventure. Originally, I intended to start a long walk around 9 a.m., but nature had other plans—it rained heavily until about 11-something. Once the rain eased off a bit, I decided to head out anyway. I grabbed my son, we got our umbrellas, and we set off walking in the drizzle.

We started from the Heron Bridge in Bishan Park, which was our starting point. Once we got there, we took some interesting photos of the river. The banks were a bit flooded, which made for some nice shots. We saw herons and even a lot of monitor lizards swimming around, taking advantage of all the fish that got caught in the shallows.

In the middle of all this, I suddenly got a stomach ache and had to make a quick pit stop at a very clean public toilet—luckily it was spotless, so no trouble there. After that little detour, we continued on.

We ended up navigating through a lot of “concrete jungle” areas before we could get to the park connectors, and it was a bit disappointing because a lot of the pathways were under construction, full of scaffolding. We took a break at a McDonald’s for lunch, and then luckily found a nice green stretch to walk along before we hit more construction zones.

After our short rest and refuelling at the McDonald’s nestled in Ang Mo Kio Park, we resumed our journey, pushing northwards with quiet determination. Our compass was set on Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5, linking seamlessly into the Park Connector Network (PCN)—a paved spine threading the urban fabric with fingers of green. The path led us into the Linear Park, past Buangkok, alongside the Institute of Mental Health, and onward still towards the Sungei Serangoon Park Connector.

The weather played its part—cloudy skies and gentle drizzle formed a silvery veil over the landscape. It cooled the air and lent the walk a contemplative rhythm. Each step echoed with the softness of rain-padded asphalt. I carried with me a 1.5-litre metal bottle cross-slung at the hip like a traveler's gourd—our water ration, always on my mind.

Midway, as thirst crept upon us once more, we spotted a humble restaurant beside a prawn fishing pond. Here, we topped up on bottled water, allowing a moment's pause and laughter—small, domestic moments amidst an odyssey. Further on, we detoured slightly into Lorong Halus, where a public water cooler offered a cheaper—and colder—alternative. We replenished again, grateful for such civic amenities that support wanderers like us.

Then the landscape opened up. We crossed into what I can only call a no man’s land—an expanse of wilderness bordered by three eerily parallel tarred roads. It was as though we had wandered into a forgotten part of the island, a place both temporal and spatially in-between. We continued without complaint, the land stretching ahead in silent invitation.

Fatigue made its presence known—thighs sore, arches burning, shoulders pulling under the weight of carried essentials. But the pain was not unfamiliar. It stirred within me a memory etched deep: the jungle of Brunei, when I was a 19-year-old cadet enduring the punishing regimens of military training. Then too, the heat was oppressive, the forest unforgiving. Yet it forged something elemental in me—a knowledge that the body is capable of more than the mind believes. Compared to that crucible, today’s trek was but a whisper, a gentle call to the edge rather than a shove into it.

This walk, long and meandering, is not simply a physical exercise. It is a reawakening—a gentle reminder that nature, even amid concrete corridors and scaffolded trails, offers communion and reflection to those who walk with open senses.

And so we walked. One foot in front of the other. Not chasing a destination, but inhabiting a path.

Having traversed the vast openness of Pasir Ris Industrial Drive 1—an austere stretch softened only by the company of grey skies—we made a practical decision: to bypass the scenic detour through Pasir Ris Park. Time was no longer on our side. The sun had long since passed its zenith, and we had begun this journey late. Efficiency now overruled poetry, and so we rejoined the PCN, its asphalt spine winding steadfastly onward.

I tried, for a while, to quicken my pace—to recoup the hours and beat the shadows. But ambition soon met the body’s quiet protest. A tightening pull behind my leg reminded me: this is not a race. I tempered my stride, embracing constancy over speed, rhythm over haste. The ache was manageable. I adjusted, adapted, endured.

Pasir Ris Drive 3 brought us closer to Loyang Lane, a familiar stretch marked not by landmarks, but by memory. My son—ever the pragmatist—suggested we hold off on dinner until the journey was complete. I agreed, recalling a previous occasion when we arrived past 9 p.m., under the gaze of streetlamps. This time, we silently vowed to better that performance—to walk with resolve and shave precious minutes from memory’s benchmark.

By the time we reached Loyang Lane, my body was beginning to protest in earnest. The weight of the day, the mileage, the humidity, all conspired to make each step feel heavier than the last. I remembered the industrial site ahead with a vague dread—its dust, its pungent air, its dimly-lit solitude. But to my surprise, the path had changed.

Where once there were gritty roads and biting odours, now lay a clean and generously wide PCN. The breeze was kind, the surroundings unintrusive, almost welcoming. It was as if the city, too, was honouring our perseverance, rewarding effort with ease.

I gathered what strength I had left. The walk was not over, but it was manageable. The body, despite its fatigue, listened. I pressed forward—not heroically, but faithfully. Not for glory, but for completion.

This is how one walks through the quiet thresholds of a city—not to conquer distance, but to discover where the spirit begins to speak when the body begins to falter.

As evening descended and the shadows lengthened across Loyang Way, I found my concern subtly shifting—not just towards my own pace, but towards my son. I glanced at him often, quietly gauging his breath, his steps, the sweat soaking through his shirt. He was perspiring heavily, a silent engine of stamina. I reminded him gently—perhaps more than once—to drink more water. He complied, ever patient. As the light faded, he changed into lighter, brighter clothing—not just for comfort, but for visibility. The dusk makes phantoms of even the most familiar figures.

Strangely, he was doing better than I was. His steps still held rhythm, while mine began to falter. Yet it was his presence, and his unwavering commitment to finish without complaint, that lent strength to mine.

We continued along Loyang Way. I felt a spark of joy kindling within me—we were near the end. I could feel the weight of the journey lifting, kilometer by kilometer. My spirits rose. I voiced it aloud. But my son, ever grounded, reminded me: “Let’s press on. Celebrate at the finish line.” His words tempered my exuberance and transformed it into fuel. It was a wisdom born of youth and discipline.

And it worked.

But the final kilometer was punishing. My steps grew heavier, my rests more frequent. I stopped at intervals along Loyang Avenue, catching my breath, stretching calves that trembled slightly now with strain. Then, just as the road turned and we approached our final descent into Changi Village, a figure emerged from the semi-darkness—shadowed at first, then unmistakably familiar.

It was my wife.

She was holding up her phone, videoing our final approach. The sight of her—waiting, watching, witnessing—was both surreal and reassuring. I was overcome by a quiet flood of gratitude.

I mustered what strength remained in me, and together, we walked the final few hundred metres.

The lights of Changi Village Hawker Centre greeted us like an oasis. I walked straight in, barely scanning the stalls before settling on the very first Muslim food stall I saw. I could go no further. The soreness surged through my feet as I sat down. It wasn’t pain now—it was the echo of distance travelled, the body’s exhale after long service.

Relief. Food. Family.

In that moment, everything was complete.

On this odyssey of design, I have grasped the quintessence of art, architecture, and creativity. Here, my imagination has been sculpted into the form of language, and with the delicate assistance of artificial intelligence, this language has become immensely free. My design is a poetic fusion of the solidity of precise architecture with the fluid beauty of a ballet dancer's form. It is a dialogue between attire and architecture, a symphony of melody and shape. The crisp tailoring of the jacket echoes the straight lines of modern architecture, while its dark solemnity contrasts with the ethereal transparency of the skirt's hem—this is a robust dialogue, a duet of strength and flexibility.

The intricate architectural blueprints on the skirt are a metaphor for the meticulous planning of life. Its layered pleats seem to whisper softly, narrating the boundless possibilities of existence. The choice of material—light yet tenacious—parallels the need for buildings to be strong but also to dance with the wind, just as the design of the ballet shoes emphasizes the support of both the body and the emotions.

We traveled from Johor, Malaysia, through Jalan Besar then boarded a Thai train to HatYai. From there we reached Bangkok, took the Express Bus to Siam Reap. From Siam Reap, we took the Mekong Express to HCMC, Ho Chi Minh City. We ride the wooden Orient Express from Hanoi to Sapa. Onboard we have a celebration with the red wine produced in Vietnam. It was a rocking night ride with small cockroaches. This was the part of the Southern road that connects ASEAN to the southern part of China through Sapa in Vietnam to Hekou in China. It was an amazing overland journey. We stayed a night in the highland of Sapa, the northernmost part of Vietnam.

We always see the freedom of the bird while they were flying, or we assume they had freedom. Zhuangzi would ask if we are not the bird, how would we know the way it feels. Or how would we know it does not feel free? Either way, we are not Zhuangzi, we would not know how he knows about the feeling of the bird too. However, on this rainy day, I did know that it was not easy to brace the thunderstorm on the top of the tall tree, swinging violently in the strong wind. The little baby heron seems to be disturbed and flapped its wings rapidly. The heron has to calm the baby down by staying closer and lower, not an easy job.

This was the main staple food between two pieces of bread for a picnic lunch for many.

Here are some of my latest work using the digital pencil with iPAD Pro. I had started in 2011 using the finger to draw on the iPAD, a revisit in creating artwork using the digital input device. Going further back, I first started digital artwork using photoshop one, through manipulating the raster image. In 1995 I used the Wacom to retouch and draw in digital form. Going further back was using Mac SE to generate 3D line works. Time seems so different now. Last year I started doing 3D painting using Occulus goggle. It has been a long arduous way to relearn again.

Here are some of my recent portraits using the iPAD pencil.

Hamamako Scream

Since that fortunate day, she had never stopped crying, she did not have school and suffered the indignation of her teachers, but she suffered more than she bargained for, 70 years of inescapable discrimination. She cried and screamed, but everyone was doing the same.

She got infected by the black thing. No medicine can kill the black thing. No one can shake it off. One by one, they watched the black thing ate into them. Others who were lucky and was not within the range of the black thing despised them, ostracised them, like leprosy, they were thought to be contagious. The black thing created an imaginary boundary between those infected and those uninfected.

She was sickened with this situation. Her scream had become muted. She still had nightmares. She saw people flaking off, jumped into the water, bled from their skin, coughed and vomited. One by one they went through hell to heaven. The pain on them was call burn. It burned for weeks. Hurt for a long long time. One by one people around her died, unnaturally. Her suspicion was confirmed; they found the black thing in her organ. She started to count her days. She was grateful each day when she could take a breath when she woke up in a new day.

One day she decided to talk about the black disease and become a nuisance, but she felt the need to communicate her torment so that other people can stop creating this black thing. The prevention of the black thing is in the conscience of the decision makers, the movers, and shakers of today’s powerful nations.

Kyo Terai + Yoko Fujii

Simple and elegant lines bespoke the art of Yoko Fujii. Traveling in Kyoto, other than drinking tea and taking in the minimalist framed view of the Japanese rock garden, shopping for teapots is another form of therapy. Perhaps it is another way for the ladies of the house.
Here we got a piece of work by Yoko Fuji, graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts in 1967. Her works had been exhibited in Kyoto and Germany.

Plan view where the sprout is anchored by radiating tooth which allows the tea to flow through and filter off the tea leaves, creating a clear stream when the tea is poured into the tea cup. Three simple abstract illustration of earth and life decorate each cups and the pot. uniting them into a series for a pair of drinking couple.

A close up view of the tea pot, there are 7 teeth and 8 grooves. The lid has a small breathing eyelet for allowing pressure or steam to escape from the pot. These small little details kept the tradition construct of the tea pot, they are minimal and practical.

The dotted collar and the sprout make an interesting dialogue, of anchoring and excelling beyond its boundary.

The inscription beneath the tea cups marks the trace of the artist, the insignia of Yoko Fujii.

This abstraction from the plan view shows that the tea pot is well balance and conceived.

One Bodhi Tree

Documenting with Photography, writing, history and human spirit. Some want to conserve the graveyard, others wants to conserve their ancestors’ history, but here they want to conserve the Bodhi Tree, perhaps for the Genius Loci, or perhaps Lord Krishna and its humble temple anchored the fond memories of the boys who grew up in this village. For sometimes it is beyond reason that some things are done in this way. For me, I paint the moment for eternity. For the last milliseconds were gone when they passed us. Only the photographs can recall the stories again and again vividly.

Modern Chinese Calligraphy

This is a journey of understanding Chinese culture and philosophy through Dao De Jing. The most sacred ancient text written in the 500 BC whose author the scholars has not been accurately identified. This text, though written more than 2500 years ago. Is still studied, translated, and interpreted by many who have a keen interest in Chinese philosophy.

A modern interpretation of Chinese Calligraphy waiting to be explored by the reader of the most secret text of ancient Chinese civilization, the Dao De Jing. It is the most translated text, and it is still relevant till today. Printed on cream paper, consisting of eighty-one chapters, each written on a single sheet for easy coloring.

Colouring for Seniors - Little India

This is a series of fountain pen drawings on Little India, drawn after a careful study of the place over a few months. It was more than a year ago that I decided to teach my son how to draw with a pen, fountain pen to be precise. It was after his 'O Level' and he had a few months before the result is release.
He loves to draw since young. He would draw all over the table and chairs, his table and chairs. We do not allow him to draw on the wall and other places. However, every now and then we still would catch him doing just that. Usually, we insisted that he cleaned them up. His cleaning was bad. We could still marks and residual ink or pencil lead on the wall. Our domestic help did a better job.
He was never good at getting good marks for his studies. When he said he was going to score, it was always some marks around 65%. We were not particularly worried about his result that we would force him to study every minute. However, we would still have to figure a way to allow him to continue his education. We would like him to finish his university degree for sure. The Junior College way is quite unlikely for him. I had faith that he would do well in university, but he has to find a way to get be qualified for university first. It is important for us that he does it at the local university. We prefer it over going oversea for many reasons. One major reason is that our Singaporean culture is very different from that of America or Australia.
All drawing and painting start with the line. I insist on the pen for a few reasons. Pen is unforgiving. Once you draw the wrong line, you cannot remove it without a trace. Yes, no eraser is to be used. You got the wrong line. You flow with it. There is no turning back or tear the paper up. One has to treasure the paper, every piece of paper has to yield to its usefulness. Conserve the paper. Treat it as a sacred being, perhaps, with a life to be fulfilled. Feel sorry if you did not do your best to fulfill its destiny, to be used up, not to be wasted. Every piece of paper cost money too. One can buy expensive paper, pen and ink, but not waste them away. Treat every pen, ink, paper and thought as carefully as possible.
The fountain pen is different from the felt tip pen.

The perspective brings the viewer into focus, the joy and happiness is that which we would not mind having. Others sought it with their entire life. Yet another, share their joy with others. And the guru among us encourage and guide us into achieving them. Through all these, perhaps one arrives after loosing all that one possessed. Perhaps the one that have nothing is the joyous and lightest of all.
