Are all carpets the same? Well they most certainly are not! Whilst they might all cover your floor, they come in a wide variety of carpets for different uses, and accordingly they are made in different ways and with different materials.

The materials they are made from vary from purely man-made materials, through to pure wool, wool blend mixes and even textured natural fibre carpets which feel relaxing in a slightly odd sort of way, yet have become popular for use in bedrooms.

However not only are various carpets made from different materials, there are also differences in the way they are made, or the “weave” as you may have heard it called.

The first of what is probably considered to be at the lower end of the market are carpet tiles (Normally around 50cm square, although larger sizes can be sourced). These are typically designed for use in offices, where high traffic areas with carpet on them need replacing far more often than low traffic areas.

Whilst they can be used in the home, in general they are not, as they are no where near as comfortable as a wool mix carpet, as they have a very industrial feel to them as well.

Next up is “Tufted” carpets, which were actually one of the first real carpets, invented and produced for the masses in America in the early 1940s. They are based upon a bedspread type cloth that then had the tufts (hence the name) pushed through it. This really did bring carpet to the masses, and was the first real move away from rugs in rooms, to carpets covering the whole floor. It is still produced today, but is classed as a basic plain coloured carpet.

Next up is Wilton, who still manufacture carpets today; however the name actually refers to the weaving process that they invented. Wilton is still considered by many to be the best, even compared to the world-famous Axminster carpets.

Which brings us on to what along with Wilton carpets, is considered to be one of the best in the World. Indeed both Wilton and Axminster carpets are sought after Worldwide, and have graced the floors of many famous government buildings and private houses the World over.

Axminster carpet is machine woven with the cloth and the backing being woven at the same time. Axminster carpet is so widely loved, as due to the weaving process, just about any coloured pattern can be woven in to it.

Carpets may also come in different textures, shapes and colors and in this article we aim to provide tips for choosing and maintaining your carpet in a perfect condition.

There are many, in fact, a huge variety of carpets available. This variety is reflected in different textures, styles, sizes, shapes, colors. In order to choose the right carpet for different parts of the house or work place, there are a few small details you should be aware of.

What Kinds Of Carpets Are There?

Carpets can be of different textures, sizes, shapes, colors so choosing a suitable carpet for your home is quite that simple. Before choosing your carpet a little knowledge will help you decide:

Broad Loom Carpet. These come in widths that vary from 13 feet to 15 feet (there can be variations). This is generally known as wall-to-wall carpet. During installation it is stretched over the floor and meant to cover wall to wall. It is not meant to be moved about and so is fixed. The idea is that if it needs to be removed it is because it is being replaced.

Carpet Tiles or Modular Carpet. As its name suggests, these are carpet squares (varying from 18 inches by 18 to 1 meter by 1. It is made with a harder base (vinyl, rubber or some other alternative like Milliken´s Comfort Plus) and is placed side by side so it can also be used wall to wall. They are an ideal solution for areas in the house that will need at some point some type of facility (telephone, computer cables, lamp cords). Installation is much simpler and in fact for most residential carpet tile options you can do it yourself. another of its advantages is that if a carpet square need replacement you just pick that one out and place a new one. You do not have to remove the whole carpet roll.

Carpet Rugs. These are the classic and typical carpet commonly used in the home, and a quick look at the history of carpets show they have been around for ages. Typically they are placed over, but not fixed to the floor, in a sitting room, under tables or simply as a decorative accessory.

Carpet Textures

Among the different types of textures that find, the following are the most typical:

Frieze. Carpets have short hair that is twisted (and rolled together.) One of its best qualities is that it is much more durable. This type of texture is highly recommended and is very suitable for areas that are widely used or with heavy traffic.

Loop Pile. The yarn is sewn into the primary backing leaving a loop. This texture is maintained by keeping the carpet yarn at the same height. Berbers, which are very popular carpet types for the home, are loop pile, with thick yarn making the loops larger. Cleaning this type of texture becomes very simple since dirt tends to stay on the surface. Like Frieze, this texture, is very suitable for high traffic areas. One important maintenance tip is not to use brush vacuum cleaners as they can cause abrasions and cut the fine yarns that make up the loop.

Cut Pile. It is a very smooth texture that looks like velvet. The yarn, preferably nylon, is cut at the same length giving a smooth texture.

Cut And Loop. Another texture variation that combines both the loop pile and the cut pile, giving different texture designs.

Tips For Choosing and Maintaining Your Carpet

The greater density the better quality. The quality of a carpet is largely determined by its density (this information is generally specified in the catalog). From the point of view of the materials used, nylon yarn would be the highest quality, followed by polyester and olefin.

The pad or padding for sound proofing and impact adsorption. It’s the perfect idea if you need a room with good sound insulation. One of the textures used for this is for example polyurethane foam. Carpet tiles are made with pad attached as part of the process with the added advantage of bonding the yarn – the end result greater durability.

Area Rugs and your carpets. The best thing you can do with new area you are about to set in the bedroom, living room or wherever, is to immediately vacuum thus removing fibers or other fluff that may have become trapped when they were being made.

Do not forget that all types of soil (as dust, sand, stones), reduce the carpet life so periodically vacuum your carpets.

Finally, carpets are not only warm and decorative but they also have thermal properties reducing cold and potential heating bills.

The carpet market is a huge market, with lots of types to select from. Here are 12 different types of carpet and what they will offer you and your home.

Carpets are textile floor covering which are made from blended or single synthetic and natural fibers attached to a backing consisting of an upper layer called “pile”. Polyamides (Nylons) and polypropylene are often used in large scale productions by 90% of commercial markets. Fibers are often used for appearance, durability, cost and ease of manufacture.

There are different kinds of carpets. The woven, needlefelt, knotted pile, tufted, flatweave, hooked rug, cut and loop pile, Saxony, textured Saxony, plush/velvet, frieze, and the level loop pile. All these types are either made from wool or a man made fiber such as polypropylene, and usually consist of twisted tufts which are often heat-treated to maintain their structure.

When it comes to choosing a carpet style for your home, there is a fine line between practicality and decorative charm. As a homeowner, you want your living space to be inviting and pleasing to the eye, as well as easy to maintain. These factors must be considered when deciding on your flooring options. Carpet can offer style and charm without requiring continuous upkeep.

Everyone has different lifestyles and factors such as children or pets can influence your decision on what type of carpet would be best for your home. You have an enormous selection of colors, patterns and textures, as well as durability, quality and cost. The sole reason why you decide on a particular carpet should not be expense alone, but rather if the carpet can hold up to your lifestyle and maintain it’s beauty.

When figuring out your flooring budget, always look for the highest quality carpet that you can get for your money. Cheaper carpets are a lower quality and will probably require repair or replacement a few years down the road. Choosing a well-known brand will guard against wear and stains that cheaper carpets are prone to. Remember to include more carpet than necessary when calculating your budget. There can be difficult shapes or corners in a room that require extra carpet. If you have a tight budget restriction, look for carpet samples or remnants. It is possible to cover an entire large room with a high-quality carpet at a low cost.

Decide on your room preference. Would you like wall-to-wall carpeting so the entire room has floor coverage? Or would your family benefit more from area carpeting and rugs? Wall-to-wall coverage is more expensive, but can raise the value of your home.

Woven

Woven carpet is produced on a loom that is very similar to woven cloth, being cut pile. There are numerous different colored yarns being used and the whole process is capable of producing very intricate patterns from designs that are pre-determined. Generally, woven is the highest quality of carpet available.

Tufted

This type of carpet is produced on a tufting machine by using either a single colored or sometimes a non colored yarn. If non colored is being used, then the carpet will be dyed or printed with a design as a separate process. Carpets that are tufted can either be cut pile, loop pile, or a combination of both. Machines can produce a lot more meters of carpet than weaving, and they are usually at the lower end of the market.

Needlefelt

The needlefelt type of carpet is a bit more technologically advanced. They are produced by electrostatic attraction of individual fibers that form a unique carpet with extremely high durability. You can normally find needlefelt carpet in the contract market such as in hotels or other places where there is always going to be a lot of traffic.

Flatweave

The flatweave carpet is created by interlocking warp and weft threads. The types of oriental flatwoven carpet include soumak, plain weave, and tapestry weave. This type is not well known in the North American region, although it is very popular in the orient and Japan.

Hooked rug

This is a simple construction of rug that is handmade by pulling strips of cloth such as wool or cotton through the meshes of a very sturdy fabric. Now, this type of rug is generally known as a handicraft.

Knotted pile

With knotted pile carpets, the structural weft threads will alternate with a supplementary weft that will rise from the surface of the weave at a perpendicular angle.

Cut and loop piles

The cut and loop pile combines both looped and cut fibers. They provide a variety of surface textures for medium durability. Cut and loop carpets are available in either solid or different colors. The several different layers in this carpet can hide dirt and footprints in formal and informal areas.

Saxony

Saxony consists of tightly twisted cut piles that are heat set straight. They consist of two or more fibers that have been twisted together in a yarn, and they provide a very soft texture for informal as well as formal areas. They will show each and every footprint and even marks from vacuum cleaners.

Textured Saxony

Textured carpet is the best selling and it works well in informal areas due to the very soft feel. They are tightly twisted and texture headset for medium durability. They also offer a multi colored look that will hide tracks and footprints.

Plush/velvet

Both plush and velvet are lightly twisted and offer a uniform color. They are very soft and offer more level than textures. This type of carpet is ideal for formal areas due to it’s luxurious appearance.

Frieze

Frieze is a highly twisted cut pile type of carpet that is suited for high traffic areas. It has short fibers that will tend to curl in different directions at the surface to hide footprints and vacuum marks.

Level loop pile

The level loop pile is constructed by weaving even loops of yarn into carpet backing at both ends. This type of carpet is durable as well as track resistant, due to the strong loops. Higher loops in the carpet will create a more luxurious look. They are also great because they will prevent dirt from filtering on into the carpet.

Think about colors and styles. Take into account the wall treatments in each room that carpet will be laid. Try to match wall paint with the carpet color. If you’re trying to lighten a dark room, go with a lighter shade of carpet. If you’d like to give the room a warmer feeling, choose a carpet color that will project that. It is a good idea to take a color sample with you when carpet shopping to ensure you chooses the perfect color compliment for your home.

Are you a do-it-yourself type of person? It probably wouldn’t be a big surprise if you are planning to install your own carpets. While it may seem like an easy task, there are a lot of factors that you will need to consider, such as what type of carpeting your home needs, and the type of carpet underlay you should use underneath.

If you are loath to have professional installers touch your floors, then you will have to learn how to install your own carpets with the right equipment necessary to undertake the job.

One of the most daunting DIY flooring projects is installing carpet. Many people are intimidated by the thought of installing carpet, feeling that it is beyond their abilities. This is in large part due to the special tools required. However, installing carpet is actually a fairly easy DIY flooring project and by doing it yourself, you can save a great deal of money in installation costs.

Tools

Installing carpet does require some specialty tools. These include a knee stretcher, power stretcher, seam iron, seam roller, wall trimmer, and stair tool. However these tools can be rented from your local rental store. This is much more cost effective than purchasing the tools.

You will also need a carpet knife, hammer, tack strips (also referred to as tackless strips), staple gun or hammer stapler, and carpet seam tape.

Preparing Floor

It is very important to prepare the floor properly before installing carpet. Carpeting can be installed over cement, wood, or linoleum. However, if the flooring is damaged, it is best to remove or replace the damaged subfloor. Take this time to repair any squeaks in the floor due to loose boards.

The subfloor should be cleaned thoroughly before installing your carpet. You don’t want any dirt or debris underneath which can damage the padding and carpet. You should remove any floor registers and if you have doors which swing into the room, it is easier to remove the doors rather than try to work around them.

Installing the Padding

Before installing the padding, you will need to install tack strips along the edges of the walls and around floor register openings. Do not install the tack strips in front of door openings. These strips should be installed about 1/4″ from the wall with the tacks leaning towards the wall. Most tack strips will already have nails in them for nailing to the flooring. If you have a cement floor, you may need to glue the strips down using a masonry adhesive.

The next step is to roll out your padding, starting along one wall. Overlap the tack strips by approximately 3-4 inches, making sure the padding remains smooth and straight without bunching. Use a staple gun or hammer stapler to staple the padding to the carpet, placing a staple every 6 inches or so. If you have a cement floor or do not want to damage the underlying floor, you can use adhesive to installing the padding.

You can use duct tape along the seams to help keep them from bunching when you install the carpet. When you have completed the padding installation, use a utility or carpet knife to cut the padding along the tack strips, making sure that the padding does not overlap the strips. Cut out any floor register openings along the tack strips as well.

Installing Carpet

Roll the carpet out in the room, again starting along one wall and leaving 3-4 inches of overlap along the walls. Make sure to keep the carpet straight and be careful not to allow any of the padding to bunch up under the carpet. Cut out the floor register openings, also leaving a couple inches of overlap over the tack strips.

If you have more than one section of carpet, you will have to create a seam. Place seam tape beneath the seam with the adhesive side up. Heat your seam iron and then starting at on wall, place the iron directly onto the seam tape until the adhesive melts and press both edges of carpet onto the tape. Use a seam roller or other smooth heavy object to press the seam together and into the adhesive. Follow this process along the entire seam, doing a small section at a time.

Starting in one corner, use the knee stretcher to install the carpet to the tack strip. Place the head of the kicker a few inches from the wall and kick the pad sharply with your knee. Repeat this process every 6-8 inches along the wall. Once that is complete, we will use the power stretcher to install the carpet along the other walls. Place one end of the power stretcher along the wall you just completed and the head of the stretcher along the opposite wall, about 4-6 inches from the wall. When you push the lever down, the carpet is stretched over the tack strips. Repeat this along the entire wall as well as the remaining walls. Use the knee kicker to stretch the carpet over the tacks along any floor register openings.

When the carpet has been attached to all of the tack strips, use the wall trimmer to cut the excess carpeting along the wall. This will keep the edges straight and gives us a close cut. Using a stair tool or stiff putty knife, tuck the edges of the carpet underneath the baseboard along the wall.

Finally, install door edge strip in doorways to cover the carpet edge and make a transition into the next room. Replace your register covers and you are done!

If your carpet is comes with a manual, always remember to read the manual first before you begin the actual installation. This way, you can have a better understanding of the procedure and keep from making any costly mistakes that will send you running to the phone to call the manufacturer, or a professional carpet installer. Remember that erroneous installation of your carpets frees the manufacturer from the warranty, so make sure you are doing the installation correctly, by the book.

The first chore you have to do is to move away furniture from where you plan to install your carpeting. Furniture can get in the way of your work, and you’ll need to put them far away where they won’t snag the padding and the carpet’s material that you plan to lay down. If you want wall-to-wall carpeting and a door is in the way, remove the door from its hinges first. This way, you can simply trim the excess length and thickness, and re-install your door as soon as you are done with your installation.

Before laying down your carpet, you will need to clean the floor first. Dust and dirt can soil the bottom of the carpeting and make it harder to clean. You will also want to install the underlay between the floor and your choice of carpet. The carpet underlay acts as heat insulator that serves to keep your floors warm during cold weather. It also sound proofs your floor, as well as keeps moisture away from the carpeting material. Moisture is one of the main culprits that can damage carpets.

Whether you have chosen waffle padding, foam padding, or rubber padding, among the many choices for your carpet underlay, make sure it is the right weight and thickness to suit your requirements for cushioning and insulation.

Check the smoothness of your carpeting. It will not do to have unsightly wrinkles and ripples on the surface. On the other hand, over stretching the material may damage it beyond repair.

Nowadays, getting professional help could be really expensive so we try to do different tasks on our own, especially when it comes to home improvement. One home improvement task we can try doing ourselves is installing carpets.

You are looking at the flooring in your living room and wonder how hard it would be to install carpet. The installation of any type of flooring in a home is a huge investment in your home and you want it to last a long time.

Carpet is made on a loom like fabric. The pile of the carpet can be Berber or plush. Berber carpet is a loop pile, while plush is a cut pile. It can be made of wool or nylon. Wool carpet is very expensive.
Most carpet is made in 12′ or 15′ width, and in various lengths which are usually rolled at the factory for ease of transportation.

When looking at carpet, there is also the decision of what type of pad to install under the carpet. Natural material padding is commonly used and has a good life expectancy. A synthetic pad is cheaper and used a lot.

There are several colors and patterns available when choosing carpet. A carpet with a pattern woven in it is more expensive.

Most carpet is installed on a concrete or subfloor. Measuring is done carefully so that there is not a shortage of carpet when it is installed. Make sure that enough carpet is ordered in the initial order, since there can be a noticeable difference in the shade of the same color from one roll to the next.
Are you going to install the carpet on your own? Remember that this is hard on your knees, back, shoulders, and neck. It will also take up your time to install.

You will need to purchase carpet strips, carpet tape, rolling pin, work gloves, safety glasses, and knee pads. The following items will needed to be rented for the project; a knee kicker, power stretcher, utility knife, seam cutter, seaming iron, seam tape, wall trimmer, strip cutter, and a seam roller.
Assistance may be needed to get the old carpet out of the house and move the new carpet into the house. Check with your family and friends to see who will be able to help you.

If there is furniture in the room that will be carpeted, you need to move it out of the room. You will need to tear up any old carpet, pad, and carpet strips that may be there.

The old carpet will need to be disposed of, and most trash companies do not take big items. You will need to haul it to the garbage dump, some garbage dumps charge a fee to dispose of a large item and are only open Monday through Friday.

If you choose to have the carpet installed, the installer would be moving the furniture, tearing up the old carpet, dispose of the old carpet, and include all the supplies needed for installation. Some carpet installers charge as low as $39.00 to carpet a room $99.00 to carpet the whole residence. This is cheaper than renting the equipment, buying the supplies, and paying for the disposal of the old rug.

Make sure the floor is clean and dry. Install the new tack less strips, leaving about ½” between the wall and strips. At the corners make sure the strips are adjacent to each other.

You will need to bring the new carpet in and roll it out where it will be installed. If you are able to let the carpet rest over night, it will be able to rest and make it easier to install.

You will need to use the knee kicker to tighten the carpet and install it along one edge. The kicker will stretch the carpet while attaching it to the carpet strip. Work your way around the room with the carpet stretcher.

Below are lists of materials and tools you will be needing, and basic instructions about installing carpets.

Here are the materials you will need:

• Carpet
• Nails
• Screws
• Carpet pad

You will also be needing these tools:

• Hammer
• Tack strip cutter
• Knee kicker
• Trimmer
• Power stretcher
• Staple gun
• Carpet seam tape
• Carpet knife

Before starting the project you have to make sure all the materials and tools needed are complete. Follow these simple steps to properly install your carpet.

• Measure the room – Before doing any purchasing and cutting it is always best to first do the measuring. You have to measure the length and the width of the room as this is important to determine the size of the carpet you will be needing.

• Prepare the floor – Make sure that the floor is cleaned. Check for damages like squeaks. Have these repaired before installing your carpet. These will only damage your carpet when not properly fixed.

• Install tack strips – Install the tack strips along wall edges. Do not install them in front of door openings. You have to maintain about 1/4″ space between the walls or baseboard and the tack strips.

• Install the carpet pad – A carpet pad is essential in protecting the carpet and giving cushion to the feet. Starting along one wall, roll out your carpet pad or carpet cushion. You have to make sure that you overlap the tack strips a few inches. The padding should remain smooth and straight. To prevent it from bunching you can tape along the seams. Staple the pad thoroughly every 2 feet or so. When the carpet pad is secured, use a carpet knife to cut the excess padding along the tack strips. Make sure that the pad do not overlap the tack strips.

• Install the carpet – Same as installing the carpet pad, roll out the carpet along one wall making sure you leave an excess of about 3-4 inches that should overlap along the walls. When using more than one section of carpet, it is important that you create a seam. You can do this by placing seam tape under the seam. You can use a steam iron to melt the adhesive to fasten the ends of the carpet onto the seam tape. Hammer nails through the.

• Tack the carpet down and trim – Before trimming the excess ends of the carpet, you have to tack the carpet into the space you left between the baseboard and the tack strips. Use the knee kicker to install the carpet to the tack strip. Use a power stretcher to stretch the carpet over the tack strips. Trim the carpet using a carpet trimmer to trim the excess carpet along the wall. Use a stair tool to tuck the carpet in the space between the tack strip and wall. Don’t forget to install door edge strips along doorways to cover up the edge of the carpet.

When you have finished installing the carpet, it is important that you also vacuum the carpet.

Installing carpets could be really easy and fun if you follow certain steps. You have to use the right materials and the appropriate tools to achieve the result you are looking for.
