One of the city’s most well-known soccer bars, The Globe Pub in North Center brings the spirit of a British‑inspired international sports bar to Chicago, mixing proper pints and a fiery crowd.

AJ Hudson’s Public House in Lakeview channels classic pub charm with a match‑day energy that kicks in as soon as you walk in the door. The casual spot draws diehard fans and ex‑pats who know exactly where to go when the match begins. The menu leans into elevated comfort food, the beer list stretches into the triple digits, and the space stays busy from lunch through late nights.

Cleo’s Bar and Grill

Cleo’s Bar and Grill is Ukrainian Village’s unofficial clubhouse for anyone who plans their day around the next kickoff. When soccer’s on, locals swing by for a drink at the bar or on the tucked-away back patio. Add in hearty plates and passionate supporters who don’t mind making new friends, and you’ve got the neighborhood’s go-to spot for watching matches.

Babe’s Sports Bar

Whether you’re chasing the match or the perfect drink, this English-inspired pub has exactly what you need.

GO Tavern & Liquors

A bar‑and‑bottle‑shop hybrid with a real love for local soccer, GO Tavern & Liquors consistently hosts regulars and sports fans on match day. This was a full two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had become official in 1863.

Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday in 2021, after years of activism led by 95-year-old Texas grandmother Opal Lee. Today, the holiday is honored across the country each year on June 19.

There was dance music, pot smoke, Frisbee, and Speedos aplenty. The mood was welcoming, cruisy, and joyful.

That summer, I returned at every opportunity. At the Rocks, I discovered the warmth and power of community. My experience was not uncommon.

The Belmont Rocks was a world unto itself — a gathering spot for cookouts, hookups, unions, memorials, LGBT softball and volleyball, dance parties, Radical Faerie time, sobriety fellowship as an alternative to the bar scene, and a safe place for queer youth.

For over two decades, the Belmont Rocks was the site of a Pride Parade after-party for those who felt excluded by the usual post-Pride festivities, primarily People of Color.

Everyone did their own thing at the Rocks, but they did it together.

Socializing, people-watching, and tanning were the primary pastimes there, but folks often came here to meditate, ponder, and journal.

Many found creative inspiration at the Rocks. Some went there to pen poems or to sketch. The Belmont Rocks was a place for expression and finding a voice. Queer art and carvings of every sort and skill level covered many of the limestone slabs, turning the Rocks into an open-air gallery that was in a constant state of change. The Rocks were our tablets, our altars, and our backrooms — a platform and a stage for a big part of Chicago’s unfolding queer story.

The Belmont Rocks had been a gathering spot for Chicago’s gay community since the late 1950s.

LGBT pioneers claimed the stretch of undesirable lakefront where tiered limestone slabs, in great disrepair, led down to the water.

The Belmont Rocks extended along the lakefront from Belmont Harbor to the Lincoln Park Gun Club, north of Diversey Harbor. The lawn east of the bike path along this strip was also Belmont Rocks territory.

By the early 1970s, that green had become so popular that on sunny days the grassy area was a patchwork of blankets and beach towels.

A full decade before the 1969 Stonewall rebellion sparked the modern gay rights movement, a quiet revolution was happening in Chicago at the Belmont Rocks.

Gay people were coming together. More importantly, coming together to claim space.

In doing so, LGBT pioneers were declaring our right to be here, our right to exist, and our right to gather outside in the sunshine at a time when gay bars still had blackened windows and patrons sometimes entered through the alley.

At the Rocks, we felt safety among one another and with it a sense of camaraderie. Gathering outdoors fostered trust and bolstered community empowerment. Coming together, gay people often discovered they had more in common with this ‘family’ than with blood relations.

Those leading closeted lives rarely had the freedom to be themselves. As a result, places like the Belmont Rocks or a gay bar attained an exalted importance. But whereas the bars tended to attract this crowd or that crowd, the Rocks attracted almost everyone.

Honoring the legacy of the Belmont Rocks

The Chicago AIDS Garden; photo courtesy Chicago Parks Foundation

The party at the Belmont Rocks ended in the early 2000s with a decree from the Army Corps of Engineers. The area was slated for demolition as part of a shoreline revetment project to prevent erosion.

As a result, the Rocks were bulldozed in 2003. By then, much of Chicago’s gay community had already gravitated north to Hollywood Beach.

No grand event happened at the Belmont Rocks, but countless life-changing experiences did. The story of the Belmont Rocks is a mosaic of experiences that combine to tell the story of our community—a story of great courage and tenacity, persevering through invisibility, indifference, hostility, and AIDS.

Almost twenty years after the Belmont Rocks were bulldozed, it was announced that the new AIDS Garden Chicago would be constructed on 2.5 acres of former Belmont Rocks territory.

The garden officially opened on June 2, 2022. Today, the public space honors those lost to AIDS, those still living with HIV, and all those whose lives have been impacted by the virus.

The AIDS Garden is a collaborative effort of the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Parks Foundation and was spearheaded by State Representative Greg Harris and Alderman Tom Tunney.

The garden is home to “Self-Portrait,” a 30-foot Keith Haring statue and the first public monument in Chicago to honor those impacted by AIDS.

Once more, this place that was integral to the lives of so many queer Chicagoans is a place for gathering. Once more, the area is a place for people to come together with a sense of safety and belonging — the very things that many, like myself, found at the Belmont Rocks.

The city has a special connection to the Caribbean nation — Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, Chicago’s first permanent non-Indigenous settler, is believed to be of Haitian descent.

Today, you’ll find elements of Haitian cuisine, history, and culture throughout the city. And since May is Haitian American Heritage Month, there’s no better time to get out there and experience it all for yourself.

History of Haitians in Chicago

Perhaps Chicago’s most famous Haitian resident is the city’s founder, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable. Born to a French father and an enslaved African mother in Haiti, Du Sable was an entrepreneur who settled in the area that would become Chicago by 1778.

Du Sable married Kitihawa, a Potawatomi woman, and had two children. Kitihawa played a crucial role in establishing a strong relationship with the Indigenous community and allowing du Sable to create a permanent residence in the area.

DuSable Black History Museum; photo by Abel Arciniega

The couple set up their homestead on the banks of what would one day be known as the Chicago River, making du Sable the first non-Indigenous resident of what the Potawatomi called “Eschecagou”. The estate included a smokehouse, dairy, workshop, stable, and more.

More than a century later, Haitian culture would be on display at Chicago’s 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Haiti was the only Black nation with a pavilion at the Fair’s White City, which featured countries from around the globe.

Haitians began immigrating to Chicago in earnest in the mid-1960s, though groups of people from Haiti might have been living here as early as 1917.

The space was created by Elsie Hector Hernandez, originally from Haiti, who founded the museum to share her passion for Haitian culture.

The museum boasts a vibrant collection of Haitian art and hosts regularly rotating exhibitions for the community. They also offer programs that support Haitian artists, educational events, hands-on workshops, and immigration services.

Since opening in 2022, VietFive has offered a menu of authentic Vietnamese drinks, made exclusively with beans sourced directly from owner Tuan Huynh’s family farm.

But VietFive is also so much more than a coffee shop.

The purpose-driven community space is intentionally designed to be welcoming to all, from providing accessibility resources to hiring justice-impacted individuals.

“We wanted to create a space where everyone feels like they have a rightful presence,” says Tuan.

Coffee and culture from Vietnam to Chicago

The story of VietFive began in 2019, when Tuan Huynh traveled from Chicago back to his home country of Vietnam. There, he visited the coffee farm that had been in his family for decades.

“I was reintroduced to my homeland in a sense,” says Tuan. “My family introduced me to the coffee we’d been growing for decades, and it changed my whole life.”

VietFive Coffee

Tuan returned to Chicago and opened VietFive. The shop specializes in both classic and creative Vietnamese coffee drinks, with offerings like the classic phin brew (iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk), a pandan latte, or ca phe trung (Vietnamese egg coffee).

VietFive menu highlights

Here are just a few of VietFive’s bestsellers and Tuan’s top recommendations:

Robusta Phin Brew (iced Robusta coffee with sweetened condensed milk)

Pandan latte (a classic flavor of Vietnam, made with coconut milk)

Ca phe trung (Vietnamese egg coffee with condensed milk and egg yolk foam)

Ca phe muoi (salted coffee with sweet and salty cold foam)

Cascara tea (made with the dried husks of coffee cherries)

All drinks are made with beans harvested from Tuan’s family farm and roasted locally in Chicago. Whole beans and ground coffee are also available for purchase. VietFive uses Robusta coffee, a common species of coffee in the central highlands of Vietnam.

“It’s high in antioxidants, low in acidity, and has a more bold and smooth flavor profile,” says Tuan. “It makes for a very versatile cup of coffee.”

A focus on accessibility and inclusion

From the very beginning, accessibility was embedded in every aspect of VietFive’s physical space.

“We don’t want any barriers to deter them from stepping into the space, especially for folks with seen or unseen disabilities,” he says.

Anna Huynh, Tuan’s wife and VietFive’s co-owner, is an educator focused on accessible and inclusive learning. She has used this expertise to shape VietFive’s rightful presence initiatives and emphasis on access.

The shop offers a variety of resources and accommodations to ensure a comfortable experience for all guests, including:

Noise-cancelling headphones to provide customers with the option for a more peaceful coffee shop experience.

Visual communication cues that support customers with navigating the coffee shop and communicating with staff.

Adaptive menus in Braille, large print, and audio for customers who may be Blind or low-vision.

Visual touch-point menus for guests who are non-verbal or nonreaders.

VietFive is also intentional about building a diverse and inclusive team. The staff includes individuals with a range of disabilities, along with justice-impacted individuals. As a justice-impacted individual himself, this mission is especially important to Tuan.

“We are really building a community and creating a space that serves our city and provides upward mobility to individuals,” he says.

A part of the Chicago story

VietFive is part of a booming community of Asian-inspired bakeries and coffee shops in Chicago, joining classic establishments like Chiu Quon in Chinatown and buzzy new openings like Del Sur, which blends Filipino and Midwestern flavors.

“The Asian community, not only in Chicago but across the country, has become recognized as creators, innovators, and a staple in the fabric of the American lifestyle,” says Tuan. “The Asian cultures within the diverse diaspora have created a narrative driven by small businesses, artists, and creators.”

Above all, Tuan hopes that VietFive can be a model for accessibility and inclusion that can help educate, inspire, and leave a larger impact on the city’s small business culture.

“I like to say that VietFive is a Chicago story,” says Tuan. “We are born in Vietnam, a country across the ocean, but we are committed to being a part of our city. And we have been embraced by Chicago. We think it’s the greatest city in the world.”

The Mother Road officially debuted in 1926, envisioned as a single continuous roadway linking the Midwest to the Pacific. Their goal was simple but revolutionary: create a highway that connected rural towns to major cities, opening the American West to everyday travelers, not just rail passengers or the wealthy.

The Palmer House is one of Chicago’s most storied hotels, originally opened in 1871 as a wedding gift from businessman Potter Palmer to his wife, Bertha Honoré Palmer.

Though the first building was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1873, making the Palmer House the country’s longest-operating hotel.

Its opulent lobby, decked out with Tiffany chandeliers and marble staircases, reflects the city’s Gilded Age ambition. Staying here places you just steps from the historic Adams Street start point, where Route 66 began for decades.

Before you head west, don’t miss tasting a piece of Chicago history: the brownie was invented right here at the Palmer House for the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. The original Palmer House brownie is served right inside the hotel at Lockwood Restaurant & Bar, located on the lobby level.

Staypineapple Chicago

Best for: Architecture lovers, shoppers, and foodies

Housed in the 1895 Reliance Building, Staypineapple Chicago occupies one of the most important early skyscrapers in the world.

The striking downtown building was a breakthrough in its time. It was one of the first to use an all‑steel skeletal frame, allowing for expansive windows and unprecedented height.

The building became a prototype for the twentieth‑century skyscraper, influencing architects worldwide and helping cement Chicago’s reputation as the birthplace of modern architecture.

The hotel’s prime location in the Loop makes it an easy walk to both the original Jackson Boulevard starting point and the later Adams Street alignment of Route 66. There’s also plenty to explore along historic State Street, just outside the hotel doors.

Inside, the hotel’s meticulously preserved details offer a glimpse into the city’s architectural revolution at the turn of the century. The buzzy new first-floor restaurant, Mariela, serves a coastal-inspired menu by a team of acclaimed Chicago chefs.

Chicago Athletic Association Hotel

Best for: Rooftop views and staying near the original 1926 starting point

The Drawing Room inside the Chicago Athletic Association; photo by Nick Podraza

Built in 1893, this stunning landmark sits along Michigan Avenue, just steps from where Route 66 originally began in 1926. Today, the spot is marked with a colorful pylon — perfect for your pre-road trip photo op.

The design of the Chicago Athletic Association building was inspired by a Venetian palace, with its pointed arches, intricate tracery, and richly ornamented façade. For decades, it served as an exclusive private men’s club whose members included some of the city’s most influential industrialists, politicians, and athletes.

Before you set off, hop in the elevator and head straight to Cindy’s, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and bar. Grab a cocktail and enjoy one of the best views in the city: the lake, the park, and the very streets where the Mother Road once began.

Hampton Inn Chicago

Best for: Travelers who love Art Deco and motor history

Jack’s Place Bar, Hampton Inn & Suites hotel in downtown Chicago

The Chicago Motor Club was founded in 1906 by early automobile enthusiasts who wanted safer streets, better roads, and reliable travel information. In the decades that followed, the club became one of the Midwest’s most influential advocates for motorists — publishing maps, posting road signs, lobbying for highway improvements, and offering travel planning long before GPS or standardized signage existed. The club’s work directly shaped the era in which Route 66 was born.

Today, the building lives on as the Hampton Inn Chicago, and checking in feels like stepping into a beautifully preserved tribute to the golden age of auto travel.

Much of the original Motor Club character remains intact. Guests can still admire the soaring lobby, the restored mural, the decorative metalwork, and the elegant mezzanine railings. A Ford Model A from 1928 — the same year the building opened — sits proudly on display, honoring the era when motorists came here for maps, roadside assistance, and advice before heading west.

Ohio House Motel

Best for: Retro vibes and an authentic Route 66 experience

An old-school motel surrounded by skyscrapers, the Ohio House Motel is the last remaining motor lodge in downtown Chicago. This historic spot is a rare survivor from the era when travelers pulled right up to their room doors and neon signs lit the way across America.

Built in 1960, the Ohio House reflects the rise of mid‑century “motor inns” that catered to the growing number of families and road‑trippers exploring the country by car. Its distinctive Googie‑style sign, angled rooflines, and drive‑up parking capture the optimism and mobility of the postwar years, the same cultural moment when Route 66 was at its peak and carrying millions of travelers westward.

While Chicago’s skyline transformed around it, the motel remained remarkably unchanged: it still operates as a motel, so guests can park directly outside their rooms and enjoy the classic mid‑century layout that has survived waves of redevelopment.

Though not located directly along Route 66, the Ohio House embodies the spirit of the Mother Road and feels like stepping into a 1960s road trip postcard — making it a fun, authentic choice for travelers who want to begin their Route 66 adventure with a dose of pure Americana.

Morning: Breakfast and Museum Campus South

Start your day with a family‑friendly breakfast at Valois, the classic cafeteria‑style spot where “See Your Food” is the motto. Kids love the pancakes and adults love the history — it’s one of President Obama’s favorite Hyde Park haunts.

From there, take a short walk to the Museum of Science and Industry, one of the largest science museums in the world. Families can easily spend hours exploring the hands‑on exhibits: step inside a giant tornado, descend into a coal mine, or marvel at the restored U‑505 submarine.

Midday: Obama Presidential Center

Hop on the #6 bus or take a quick rideshare to the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park.

Check out the interactive exhibits in the Museum and sweeping views of the park and surrounding city in the Sky Room. The Center’s storytelling spaces — including exhibits on community organizing and the Obama family’s Chicago roots — are designed to be accessible and engaging even for younger visitors.

Outside, head to the nature-inspired playground featuring ADA accessible swings, a duck slide, mud kitchen garden, and sensory nooks. You’ll be walking in the footsteps of Barack Obama, who taught law at the University of Chicago Law School for more than a decade.
