The Bud Billiken Parade 2026 steps off Saturday, Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Bronzeville, ending with a festival in Washington Park. It’s free, family-friendly, and celebrates the city’s Black heritage and back‑to‑school season.

A Chicago tradition since 1929, Bud Billiken has grown into the nation’s largest African American parade. Each year, the parade draws more than 500,000 spectators along the two-mile route. Up to 300 groups participate each year, including floats, marching bands, drill teams, and more.

Where to watch

Grab a spot anywhere along the two-mile route. The parade kicks off at 39th Street and Martin Luther King Drive, then heads south to 51st Street before proceeding into the heart of Washington Park.

Make sure to arrive early to claim your spot. Chairs and blankets are popular with spectators. Whether it’s along the grassy boulevard or the tree-lined park, there are plenty of shady and scenic places to watch the joyful procession.

The event also offers VIP admission with standing room and seated areas. VIP tickets for the 2026 event are on sale now.

Getting there

Public transportation is the best way to get to the Bud Billiken Parade.

• Take the Green Line to the Indiana, 43rd Street, 47th Street, 51st Street, or Garfield stops and walk east toward the route.
• Take the Red Line and exit at the 47th Street stop. Walk or take the No. 47 bus east and get off at Prairie Avenue.

Keep in mind that CTA bus service may be interrupted or rerouted due to the parade route. There are also several Divvy bike share stations located near the route.

The history of the Bud Billiken Parade

The roots of the Bud Billiken parade are tied to the Chicago Defender, a weekly newspaper founded by Robert S. Abbott in 1905. The paper played an influential role during the Great Migration, when millions of African Americans fled the rural South for the urban North — including Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood.

As Bronzeville grew into Chicago’s “Black Metropolis”, the Defender could be found throughout the city’s South Side. Newsboys sold copies on street corners, using song and dance to attract customers.

A youth-centric section of the paper grew into the “Bud Club,” a social club for young Black people. In 1929, Abbott expanded the concept into a parade to honor the hard-working newsboys and the city’s Black youth.

The parade was named for the Billiken, a popular charm doll from the 1900s considered to be good luck and a guardian of children. The paper adopted the mascot to embody its legacy of youth, pride, and progress.

The Chicago Defender, now run by the fourth generation of the founder’s family, is still a vital piece of Chicago media. And the Bud Billiken Parade has grown into the nation’s largest African American parade.

Over the years, the parade has hosted celebrities and dignitaries such as Oprah Winfrey, President Truman, Duke Ellington, and President Obama.

July is Disability Pride Month, honoring the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act by recognizing the legacy, leadership, and lived experiences of the disability community. 

Each year, Chicago celebrates with an annual Disability Pride Parade through the heart of downtown. This year’s parade, which falls on Saturday, July 23, will continue the mission of breaking down the shame and stigma around living with a disability.

Chicago is also home to a vibrant community of disability-owned businesses, including neighborhood restaurants, acclaimed bakeries, a walking tour company, and beyond. By weaving accessibility and inclusion into everyday life, these Chicago small business owners are creating spaces for belonging throughout the city. 

“I think Disability Pride Month reminds people with disabilities that they aren’t alone — that they are seen, heard, and valued. It’s a reminder that our contributions to society matter and deserve to be recognized,” says Kerrie Breuer, owner of Fat Peach Bakery.

In the Bridgeport neighborhood, Fat Peach Bakery has quickly become known for their stunning laminated pastries. The menu is filled with creative options that have neighbors lining up, like the strawberry milk croissant or the chilaquiles danish.

The popular spot is helmed by locals David Castillo and Kerrie Breuer. For Kerrie, who has a limb difference, being a small business owner with a disability means providing more visibility, representation, and inspiration for others.

“Growing up, I didn’t really see any role models with limb differences like mine, so I had to figure a lot of things out on my own,” she says. “It’s important to see that people like us can participate in a wide variety of experiences — even if it means doing things a little differently.”

Fat Peach is open Thursday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. (or sold out).

Justice of the Pies

Nestled in Avalon Park, Justice of the Pies is where buttery crusts meet a strong sense of purpose on Chicago’s South Side. Founded by Maya-Camille Broussard, a James Beard Award nominee for Outstanding Baker, this Black-owned bakery serves up sweet and savory creations with a side of social justice. 

Maya-Camille, who’s hard of hearing, designed her shop to be fully accessible, with accommodations that include a front ramp, Braille signage, and low counters and coat hooks — because good pie should be for everybody. Beyond baking, Justice of the Pies organizes I KNEAD LOVE Workshops for kids from underserved communities to learn how to cook and dream big in the kitchen. 

As for the pies, tarts, and quiches, they’re everything they should be with a tender crust and deeply satisfying filling. Prefer a handheld treat? The cookies, cobbler, and pudding hold their own. But the real magic is in the bakery’s mission to champion compassion, inclusion, and the power of food to bring people together.

That was the case with the fifth and final season of The Bear, Hulu’s smash-hit show about Carmy Berzatto and his family transforming their Italian beef spot into a world-class restaurant.

The show shines a spotlight Chicago’s acclaimed dining scene, showcasing everything from Michelin-star restaurants to casual pizza joints. And it’s not just restaurants that are showcased. From stunning skyline shots to cameos from local actors and musicians, The Bear is a true love letter to Chicago.

The Bear season five Chicago filming locations

The final season of The Bear takes place over one very long night, when the gang tackles a chaotic dinner service plagued by a storm and other challenges at the show’s namesake restaurant.

The Bear restaurant is famously located at Mr. Beef, the iconic Italian beef destination in Chicago’s River North neighborhood.

While a majority of the season takes place inside the restaurant, there are a few blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Chicago locations and references:

• In the final episode, Syd and her dad grab breakfast at a diner that looks a lot like the White Palace Grill, a famous 24-hour spot near the South Loop.
• The one and only Tom Skilling, Chicago’s most beloved weatherman, visits The Bear for dinner in episode seven.
• Carmy and Chicago-born-and-raised comedian John Mulaney walk near the Chicago River in the Loop in episode eight.
• The dessert that Marcus makes in episode seven is inspired by two legendary Chicago treats — a banana split from Margie’s Candies and Frango Mints from Marshall Fields.
• Uncle Jimmy visits the City Clerk office in downtown near Daley Plaza in episode four.
• The sign of The Publican restaurant is seen blowing in the wind of the storm during episode five.

The Bear season four Chicago filming locations

Alpana

The newest season wastes no time highlighting another landmark Chicago restaurant: Alpana, the downtown spot run by notable Chicagoan and former Check Please! host, Alpana Singh.

In episode two, Sweeps visits the elegant bistro for guidance from Alpana about wine pairings. Singh is a real-life master sommelier, who was the youngest woman and the first of South Asian heritage to pass the rigorous test. Her namesake restaurant serves up a refined menu of Italian-inspired dishes with an exceptionally curated wine list (of course).

Music Box Theatre

The historic 1920s-era theatre, located in the Lakeview neighborhood’s bustling Southport Corridor, pops up in episode eight when Sydney has a nightmare and runs through aisles with the theatre’s signature red velvet curtains in the background. The Music Box Theatre has been the go-to spot for independent, foreign, and cult classic movies for generations of Chicagoans.

J & M Tap

One of Chicago’s ultimate dive bars makes a brief appearance when Richie makes a late-night visit in episode two. With no signage on the door, J&M Tap is an under-the-radar Ukrainian Village gem with a jukebox, cheap drinks, and a laidback vibe.

Margaret Hie Ding Lin Park

Trying to make a tough decision, Sydney tosses balls at a basketball court to soothe her nerves in episode five. Lin Park is a small community park with a basketball court and playground on the city’s near South Side. This isn’t the park’s first appearance on the small screen — it has also been featured in commercials with Chicago Bulls stars Michael Jordan and Derrick Rose.

Lou Mitchell’s

The landmark Chicago restaurant makes another appearance in The Bear, this time in episode eight, when Marcus waits outside the iconic locale. Lou Mitchell’s is a Chicago institution that has served up classic diner food for over 100 years. They’re noted for gifting patrons with boxes of Milk Duds, a gesture of warm Greek hospitality.

Mr. Beef

While The Original Beef has been replaced by The Bear this season, Chicago’s real Mr. Beef is still going strong. Viewers return to the Italian beef shack in flashback scenes, like when Mikey offers Tina a job. These scenes are filmed at Mr. Beef in the River North neighborhood, an old-school sandwich shop that will transport you straight into the world of The Bear. Order an Italian beef (hot or sweet, wet or dry) and enjoy a bite of classic Chicago.

Ever

This fine-dining establishment in Chicago’s West Loop has a starring role in season three. The crew learns that the Michelin-starred restaurant, run by head chef Terry (Olivia Coleman), will be closing up shop — much to the shock of Carmy and Richie who both had transformative experiences in Ever’s kitchen. Luckily, the real-life Ever remains open (and the owner of two prestigious Michelin stars). While an 8- to 10-course tasting menu will run you around $325 per person, you can still try the acclaimed cuisine without shelling out the big bucks. Just head to After, the cocktail bar from the Ever team, to enjoy elegant small plates and cocktails.

Doma

We all know Sydney is a fan of a good breakfast sandwich. In season one, she dined at Kasama and enjoyed their cult-favorite sandwich stuffed with hashbrowns. This season sees her stopping for a chat at Doma, a Croatian cafe on the city’s near north side known for its indulgent breakfast sandwich options.

Episode 2 kicks off with a montage of some recognizable Chicago storefronts and marquees, including:

Alinea
In the finale episode, Grant Achatz (head chef of Alinea in Chicago, known as one of the best fine dining establishments in the world) attends Ever’s funeral dinner. He even discusses one of the Michelin-starred restaurant’s most famous dishes, the iconic apple-flavored helium balloon.

This season put a spotlight on many of Chicago’s most legendary chefs. The finale episode includes plenty of cameos — along with Grant Achatz, keep an eye out for Genie Kwon of Kasama (the world’s first Filipino restaurant to earn a Michelin star) and Anna Posey of Elske (an elegant Danish-inspired spot, also the owner of a Michelin star). 

Chicago farmers markets
Tina is a regular shopper at the city’s farmers markets, searching for the best local produce for Carmy’s always-changing menus (though the indoor market scenes were actually filmed at restaurant Longman & Eagle). Chicago is home to an abundance of incredible farmers markets in all corners of the city, selling everything from seasonal fruits and vegetables to ready-to-eat foods and artisan goods. 

18th Street murals in Pilsen
In Episode 6, Tina travels across the city searching for a job. And that includes lots of bus rides and walks on 18th Street in the Pilsen neighborhood. Eagle-eyed viewers will catch sight of a few colorful murals, no surprise for a neighborhood known for its vibrant street art.

University of Chicago
In a serious talk with Carmy in Episode 9, Uncle Jimmy regales him with all the inspiring creations and inventions that have come out of the University of Chicago. Located in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, this stunning campus is the birthplace of many world-changing innovations, like the first nuclear reactor. 

Chicago lakefront
In Episode 9, Sydney contemplates her professional future on the shores of Lake Michigan. The city is home to 30 miles of sparkling lakefront dotted with beaches, parks, museums, and waterfront restaurants. The best way to explore it is on the Lakefront Trail, an 18-mile paved path popular for walking, biking, skating, and sightseeing.

The Bear season two Chicago filming locations

Kasama: One of the season’s most noteworthy scenes is when Syd kicks off her Chicago food tour by breezing into Kasama without a line out the door. The bakery (by day) and fine dining establishment (by night) is the first Filipino restaurant to win a Michelin star. If you want to copy Syd’s order, get the mushroom adobo, the breakfast sandwich with longanisa (Filipino sausage), a crispy hash brown, a mango tart, and a matcha latte. Just be sure to get there early — it’s worth the wait. 

Lao Peng You: You’d be hard-pressed not to mention the drool-worthy dumplings coming out of the Lao Peng You kitchen. This Ukrainian Village restaurant is run by two brothers, Daniel Wat and Eric Wat, who make cameos throughout episode three. You also get a quick glimpse of the acclaimed Cong You Bing being rolled out, a green-onion, and sesame-studded bread that’s always made to order. 

Ever: In the episode titled “Forks”, Richie takes a turn staging in a fictional three-starred Michelin restaurant. The scenes were actually shot in the real Michelin-starred Ever in the West Loop. Much of the depicted experience was true to life, including the restaurant and kitchen’s interior, top-notch service, and even one of the food courses, although we can’t guarantee that Olivia Coleman will be found meticulously peeling mushrooms in the kitchen anytime soon.

Also, the scenes of Marcus perfecting his dessert skills in Copenhagen are actually shot at After, the companion cocktail lounge of Ever.

Pequod’s: During his stint at the fictional version of Ever, Richie is made to run and pick up Pequod’s, one of the city’s most popular deep-dish spots. While the slices in the show are given the Michelin-star treatment, we promise that Pequod’s famous caramelized pies are delicious just the way they are.

Pizza Lobo: In another pizza shoutout, Syd enjoys a thin-crust slice of pepperoni from Pizza Lobo’s Logan Square location. The menu offers a variety of pies, including to-go slices available from their walk-up window.

Avec: Syd gets a pre-service sneak peek at Avec, where she gets advice from Donnie Madia, famed Chicago restaurateur of One Off Hospitality Group (and one-time employee of the real Mr. Beef). Avec, situated on Restaurant Row in the West Loop, is beloved for its shareable Mediterranean menu. 

Publican Quality Meats: Continuing her West Loop adventure, Syd also stops by Publican Quality Meats in Fulton Market and gets a butcher lesson from PQM’s very own Rob Levitt. PQM also features a cafe lunch and brunch menu, including some of the neighborhood’s best sandwiches. 

Margie’s Candies: In the aptly titled episode “Sundae”, Syd’s food tour wraps up at Margie’s Candies in Logan Square. The iconic 90-year-old ice cream parlor is known for its homemade ice cream, milkshakes, and classic sundaes in old-school clamshell dishes.

Giant: In episode three, Syd spends time at a fictional French restaurant to chat with a fellow chef about opening The Bear. Even savvy Chicagoans might’ve missed that the spot is actually the Logan Square restaurant Giant in disguise. One of the coolest aspects of this scene is that it actually features real Giant chefs working in the background. 

Elske: Toward the end of episode three, we see Syd call up a chef friend who ends up being none other than David Posey of Michelin-starred Elske in the West Loop. Chef David gets a quick cameo before seeing Syd get comfortable in the Elske kitchen to test out a new pasta dish. 

And that’s not all. From Nat sipping her iced Dark Matter coffee, to Syd’s architecture river cruise through the heart of the city, to Tina singing her heart out at Alice’s karaoke lounge in Avondale, there were plenty more quick, Chicago-style moments highlighted throughout this season of The Bear.

• “Fishes”, the season’s flashback Christmas episode, features a star-studded cast that includes Chicago comic legends like John Mulaney and Bob Odenkirk.
• The soundtrack features music from Chicago-based legends like Mavis Staples (“You Are Not Alone” and “I Like The Things About Me”), Wilco (“Handshake Drugs” and “Spiders (Kidsmoke)”), and The Smashing Pumpkins (“Tonight, Tonight”).

• Almost every episode features gorgeous establishing shots of the city, including the Carbide and Carbon building, Lake Shore Drive, Navy Pier, Wrigley Field, the Chicago Board of Trade Building, and Chicago’s famous ‘L’ system.
• In Episode 1, we see a Potash receipt in Carmy’s apartment. The chef-approved specialty grocery store has locations in River North and Old Town.
