Johnny:
I haven’t said much to you about your marriage plans.
You are bringing SHAME and disrespect to GOD, to yourself, your parents,
your sisters, your brother, nieces and nephews!

We know that a few members of the family are supporting you
in this, but we know that they are not living in the truth.
Jesus came to speak the truth, because ONLY the truth
will set people FREE.
I am NOT condemning you, I too, I’m a sinner, but its the
GRACE and the blood of Jesus that sets us free.
I’m not sure, which priest, is marrying you.
Obviously, he or she, is not living in the truth
and doesn’t know the truth, he’s condemned and is condemning others.
The ones who will not be participating in this wedding,
are the people who really LOVE you and are standing for the truth.
We know what the Bible says about this lifestyle and the
Bile doesn’t change.
Everlasting is everlasting, and we are earnestly, praying
for you to open your eyes, before ITS TOO late for you..

Call me if you want to talk to me…
I’m NOT giving UP on you, I don’t care if you hate me
for this, if I have to fast and pray a whole month,
I will do it, because one day I will stand before the Lord..

After reading yet another article about how my ward’s city councillor (Cesar Palacio) is just a lackey for Rob Ford, I decided to write a letter to him expressing my disapproval.

Councillor Palacio,

I am extremely disappointed with your continuing blind obedience to the wishes of the mayor. It has become increasingly clear that you do not care about the best interests of your city or your ward. I cannot otherwise explain your repeated votes to cut services (the number 47 bus is now even more crowded than it used to be), and your willingness to be party to the increasingly petty vindictiveness of the mayor whenever someone disagrees with him.

Shame on your for how you have treated Councillor Stintz, and shame again for your vote to have meeting to fire Gary Webster, who has apparently committed the unforgivable crime of disagreeing with the mayor.

You may not have realized it, but your ward is changing. Increasingly, new construction and the revitalization of St. Clair is bringing in new residents (such as myself) whose views you are not representing (and often, not even acknowledging). You of all people should know the long-term value of surface transit — it is already evident in the many new businesses opening along St. Clair.

If you don’t stop blindly supporting a mayor who has been showing himself to be unable to compromise (even when offered several opportunities to do so), and who cannot turn even his well-intentioned and publicly-supported ideas into actual executable plans, you will find yourself on the losing side of an election fairly quickly. And I will do my best to see that happens sooner rather than later.

Chris Micacchi

Resident, Ward 17
Toronto

I don’t expect a (meaningful) reply — he’s clearly in love with being in a position of power — but it was a nice way to vent.

Role Model

The Role Model in my life is Janet Jackson. I don’t know where to start with her. She has been a big part of my life since I was a child. When I was a kid I was sexually abused by a Catholic Priest at my father’s church. When I told my father he hit me really hard and told me that I was a liar. I remember running to the bathroom and crying my heart out and wanted to kill myself. I turned on the radio so that no one can hear me, and out of the blue Janet Jackson’s song “Black Cat” comes on. I stood there and I listened to the song I felt that she was talking to me about what I was going through and knew how I felt at the time. After that day she has been a big part of my life. When I am down or when I need someone to talk to I always know that I can put a CD of hers and listen to her music. There are specific songs of her that I can play and know that I can feel better, like “Control,” “I Get Lonely”and“Black Cat.” To me Janet Jackson is more than a singer on the radio. She writes songs about what is going on with her life on a day by day level. That is why she is my role model and I don’t know where I would be without her in my life.

I learned that for me to be the master of my own life, I need to treat it with respect and responsibility. I need to be the one to decide what’s best for me; I need to look for what I need when I need it, and not let anyone else dictate what I should not do. My life is mine and I control it. To this day, this is an intention I hold on to tightly, because if I don’t look after my temple, or prevent others from invading it, then who will?

When you think of the Christmas season you think of family coming together and good food. But not for Lucy. Lucy hated Christmas. It was the busy season for her at work. She worked at the Gap, one of the busiest stores in Canada. She also had to work overtime and never had time for her family, especially her children Grace and Liz. One day, when Lucy went to work, her boss Mike had a staff meeting. He told the staff that he had decided not to hire staff for the Christmas season. Well Lucy told him that his decision was a stupid one and that the Christmas season was the busiest one of the year. She looked at him and said how do you expect us to work and meet our customer demands? Mike looked at her and said that he was sorry and that his decision was final. After the meeting, Lucy started to work the floor and told herself that she hated Christmas. When she got home her mother called her and told her that she was the one to host Christmas this year at her house. Lucy was not happy about it. She got off the phone and told her husband Luis about the conversation with her mother and how she wanted them to host Christmas lunch at their house. Luis looked at her hesitating to tell her that he told his mother that they were going to host the Christmas Eve dinner at their house. Finally he told her. Lucy wanted to kill him on the spot. It was one week before Christmas and Lucy had not started her Christmas shopping and needed to start. She asked Luis to look after the girls so she could go to the mall. Luis told her no because he was having his friends over to watch the hockey game, and that she needed to take them with her. They got into a fight about it. She told him how you do think I am going to do Christmas shopping and buying their presents with them there? Out of the blue, Luis called for all the girls and said that they were going shopping with their mother and to be good girls. Liz and Grace were so happy that they were going to the mall with their mother and told Lucy what things they wanted to do and things their wanted to see. Lucy told them that they were not going with her and that they were staying home with their father. Grace turned to her and said; yes we are because daddy says so. Lucy was not happy. She turned red with tears falling from her face and told them that Christmas was cancelled and there were not going to be any presents this year and all of them could go to hell. Lucy went to her bedroom and locked the door. Luis waited 5 minutes and went upstairs to talk to her and asked her to open the door. When she opened the door she handed him the phone and told him to call everyone and tell them that Christmas was cancelled because of his selfishness and told him that you know how I get like this every year at Christmas time and you always find a way to make it worse for me. So she made him call everyone and tell them that Christmas was cancelled because of his selfishness. He took the phone from her and called everyone. Luis called his mother to tell her the news. She was not happy about it. Luis mother told him you know that Lucy hates Christmas. That’s why the Christmas season always drives Lucy crazy.

First, we took the meat from yesterday and put it in our food processor, along with some spices and other stuff. After some careful chopping and mixing, we eventually ended up with a sort of “meat dough.” I kneaded it a bit more by hand to mix in the last spices, and then stuck it in the fridge for later — John had to go to his goddaughter’s birthday party.

I took the opportunity to finish wrapping his presents.

The party was done at around 4:30, so I started preparing the dough around 4:00 so it would be ready when John got home. This being the first time I’ve made capeletti, I was not sure how much pasta dough would be needed, so I started with six eggs. It turned out not to be enough and I had to go back later one and make three more eggs of pasta. Oh well.

Once John got home, we started making the pasta sheets. I really enjoy using my pasta machine, and I wish I had time to use it more often. Today I had lots of fun cranking the dough through the rollers and getting nice, even sheets of pasta!

I showed John how to make the noodles: how to cut the sheets into squares, how much meat mixture to put on, and how to fold the squares into the little hats. He got the knack pretty quick, and soon we were motoring along!

At the end, once I’d made the extra bit of pasta dough, we had exactly the right amount of dough and pasta, and ended up with lots of noodles.

John and I are going to eat it on Friday as part of our Christmas dinner, and then bring the rest to my mom and dad’s. I can’t wait!

Capeletti is a special soup that my Nonna used to make only twice a year (once at Christmas, and once at Easter). This year will be the first year that we won’t be having capeletti at Christmas, because of the very large amount of work it takes for her to make it, so last week I decided to ask my aunt Tina for the recipe (or, more accurately, a rough set of guidelines as to how to make it), so John and I could make it ourselves.

Capeletti is basically a soup — you may have had it as a pasta at a restaurant, but for me it is and always will be a soup — anyways, it is basically a soup where the noodles are shaped like little hats and are filled with delicious meats.

Making capeletti is a long and involved process (that’s why Nonna only made it twice a year!). In the version Tina gave me, the meat is made by making tomato sauce first, then by taking the meat out and turning it into a mince, and then by making the pasta by hand, cutting it into little squares, and stuffing and folding each square into the hat-shape. It generally takes at least two days, and sometimes three or more, depending on how many you plan to make! The tomato sauce is not actually used in the soup itself, it’s just a bonus!

Today, John and I made the tomato sauce and the meat.

First, we went out and bought the stuff we’d need, including four cans of tomatoes, some herbs, and some cooking wine. We also had to go borrow John’s sister’s large pot, as our biggest pot is not big enough for this!

Oh, and we had to buy the meat! Sausage, beef, pork, and chicken, plus some mortadella, and romano and parmigiano cheese for the second part.

First, we chopped up and fried the garlic, onions, and herbs. I forgot we were almost out of olive out, but fortunately we had just enough for today! While I was doing that, John prepared the meat. Soon the kitchen was filled with the smell of frying onions and garlic. I love that smell!

We put the meat into the pot and let it cook for about thirty minutes, then added the wine (after John “tested” it to make sure it was good), and the cans of tomatos. At this point, the sauce mostly smelled like beef and didn’t look very appetizing.

But after three more hours of simmering, the house started to smell REALLY good and the sauce looked much more tasty (and it was very tasty indeed!).

Keep in mind that all of this work is really just to get the meat ready. The actual pasta sauce being made is not used in the soup at all!

Anyway, the final step (for today) was to pull the meat out of the sauce and put the sauce into jars.

Tomorrow: Make the pasta and stuff the noodles! I hope we can do it all!
