I’m very familiar with every location from the whole movie. I’m sure there is some gang stuff and whatever, but it’s not like a dangerous neighborhood or ghetto or whatever (and for the record, I’m about as big of a pussy white boy as they come). I think it’s a pretty sweet song actually, I’m just saying.

Months later… Crap didn’t I order one of those? Oh dang, it got shipped to an old address.
Call Apple. Oh yeah, that’s in the process of being returned to us, when it’s here, we’ll refund you.
Sweet thanks, I’ll just go grab on at an Apple Store.
Apple Store: You don’t qualify for a subsidized phone.
Me: Yeahhhh, but I kinda do, the one I used the subsidy on is back at Apple. I never got it.
Apple Store: OK, let’s call AT&T and straighten it out.
AT&T: We can’t help you with that.
Me: OK screw you, I don’t like you anyway, I’m gonna switch to Sprint.
Sprint: Here’s your new iPhone 4S!
Me: Yay!
[Gives old phone away to friend]
Gets home… Oh wait, I don’t have signal at my house. That’s not gonna work.
Meanwhile… AT&T sends me a $300+ dollar contract breaking fee. WTF.
Me: I guess I should go back to AT&T
Go to AT&T Store: We’ll help you get your plan back
Me: So can I buy an iPhone 4S?
AT&T Store: Sure but you don’t qualify for a subsididy.
Me: ARAARARARGGGGGGG Why not?
AT&T Store: You’ll have to talk to Apple about that.
Goes back to Sprint Store: I’d like to return this Sprint iPhone
Sprint Store: Sorry, nope.
Me: ARARAGAGADGGGGGGADSFAGGGGGGfFFF
Goes back to Apple Store: We can’t help you with that, you’ll have to deal with Apple.com
Calls Apple.com: We’ll try to help, but we’re not totally sure we can. Even if we can, it might take 4 weeks.

End of this story still pending. Currently have no phone.

When I got my first job at age 13 (turned out that wasn’t exactly legal) I need a bank account to put the money in. Well, probably I wanted a place where I could go easily cash my checks, but whatever. The closest bank to my house in Verona, Wisconsin was Heartland Credit Union. I opened a savings account there in (I’m pretty sure) 1993.

It’s been my only financial institution ever since.

In college I was home often enough that I could do my banking then. It wasn’t often needed though. I deposited checks through the couple of ATM machines in town that accepted check deposits.

When I moved to Portland in 2007 I was in a spot in life where I so rarely got checks the location of the bank just didn’t matter. I later moved to Chicago, Tampa, and Palo Alto (where I am now) and in the rare event I get a check I just mail it home to my mom. She works right across the street at Park Printing so she can just swing over and deposit it.

After college, I needed to consolidate a bunch of random debt I had acquired to get my finances in order. I got the loan through Heartland and paid it off a few years later.

Why have I never changed banks? Laziness is one reason, but more importantly they’ve just taken care of me over the years. Everyone is always very nice there. I’ve had to call them for lots of reasons over the years and a human being always answers the phone and that very person is usually able to directly help me with whatever it is I need.

Speaking of which, I need a new debit card, the strip on mine doesn’t work very well.

I’m literally calling Heartland right now….

Christy (if I heard that right) helped me. She’s sending me a new card in the mail. The entire conversation was probably 45 seconds long. Incredible.

What prompted this blog post though was a letter I got from them. Someone noticed that I could have a better checking account than I currently have (one that earns interest instead of one that doesn’t). They wrote me a personal letter explaining why that would be better, included some documentation for it, highlighting the relevant bits and why I qualified for it, and also the forms I needed to fill out to do it. No pressure, but if I wanted to fill out those forms and send them back, they’d upgrade my account. Again, incredible.

Apologies to the Blue Plate Diner in Madison, Wisconsin. I love your meatloaf. I bought your cookbook to learn how to make it. I have done so many times. It is amazing. Now between my dog chewing on it and the cookbook getting wet, the book is pretty trashed. I am going to blog this recipe so it lives on forever in the great kitchen in the cloud. Serves 8ish (two bread pans).

Ingredients

1 carrot, diced
1 medium onion, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
1/2 sweet green pepper, diced
1 tb. crushed garlic

1 tb. salt
2 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. white pepper
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
1 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

1 tb. olive oil

2 lbs. ground beef
6 oz. pork sausage

4 eggs
1 cup ketchup
1 cup half-and-half
1 1/2 cups oatmeal

Dice up all the veggies. Don’t pulverize them, but do get pretty small. You don’t want to be all like “ooh I just bit into a tiny little piece of carrot.” You want the veggies to be a part of the meatloaf gestalt.

Add the olive oil and sauté over medium heat for 10 minutes until tender. Then mix in all the seasonings.

Transfer to a large bowl and add eggs, ketchup, half-and-half, and oatmeal.

Also add the beef and sausage and mix all together.

Split up into two bread pans and cover with tin foil.

Bake at 400 degrees for 60-90 minutes. Remove the tin foil and bake another 10 minutes until the top browns (best part).

Drain off excess liquid and let rest for a bit. Then eat the crap out of it.

There are lots of reasons some people are more productive in life than others, but that’s a big factor right there.

I get asked pretty frequently “how do you have time to do all that stuff you do?” and I always say “I dunno dude I wake up and I do stuff and junk then I go to bed.” Now I’m going to say “I wake up and I do stuff all day, and that gives me an edge because most other people wake up and do a little bit of stuff and then watch TV for FIVE HOURS and then go to bed.”

Not that I don’t watch TV. I love TV. I probably watch like 1 hour on average a day. A lot of days zero and then some days a few hours. Depends on if I’m totally into a show or not. Right now I’m not into anything. But I feel like I’ve seen a ton of TV shows. Pretty much every show that’s ever interested me.

So let’s say you are really into a show. If you only watched 2 hours of TV a day you could watch the entire first season of Game of Thrones in one week Monday-Friday. If you were into a regular hour-long show on a network that had commercials, you could DVR or iTunes or whatever those shows and watch *3* of them a day in 2:15. That’s cruising right along with your TV watching.

If you consistently watch 5 hours a day I can’t imagine how many entire series of TV shows you’ve seen. You’ve probably seen nearly every episode of every show ever.

But we probably all know that isn’t the case. Most people don’t actively seek out a show they think they will like and then watch that show from start to finish efficiently. They just flip on the ol’ boob tube and channel surf. Of those 5 hours probably 2 of them are commercials and watching tiny segments of shows where you never really quite got into it. That’s some sad shit right there. It’s like if you went to an art museum but just sat in the lobby and stared at the wall.
