Being pregnant with baby #2, I have had worse nausea, morning sickness, evening sickness & all day sickness. So I’ve tried more remedies.

My goal was to stay away from the nausea prescription available at the OB’s office.

What works for one person won’t for another, but here’s what I’ve used to curb my all-of-the-above pregnancy sickness.

SEABANDS

The day I found out I was pregnant, Little Dude I I hopped in the car and buzzed over to Walgreens.

I was on a mission for Seabands! I used them with Little Dude but couldn’t find them – but for $12, it was an investment I was absolutely happy with reinvesting in.

What are Seabands? They are a “bracelet” with a round ball-thingy that fits tightly over an acupressure point on your wrist. It is exactly where an acupuncturist would insert a needle for a nausea treatment (I asked my friend, who is an acupuncturist). The instructions are in the box and really easy to follow.

Find the crease on your wrist (closest to the palm of your hand, and line up three fingers next to it. Where the 3rd finger rests is where the acupressure ball goes.

After doing some research on YouTube and Pinterest, I found that you can wear the Seabands 24/7. That’s what I’ve done.

Whether it is the placebo effect or it actually works, I keep them on – because when I get brave and take them off, I throw up. I am praying that I can take them off without tossing my cookies any day now.

-UPDATE- I finally took them off just shy of 13 weeks. Whew!

NUX VOMICA & SEPIA by Boiron

Huh.The.What? Yep, this is probably a new one to you! It was to me – I didn’t get to use these last time I was pregnant!

They are homeopathic pellets made by Boiron you chew up and swallow to help with nausea. They WORK! Both pellets target a different kind of nausea. I did not figure this one out myself; my homeopathic nutritionist/nurse friend recommended them to me.

You can get them at Vitamin Cottage (Natural Grocers, Whole Foods, Sprouts, etc.) and they are about $6/vial (which has multiple doses). Totally and completely worth it!

FREQUENT, SMALL SNACKS

I set up reminders on my phone to eat frequently. Even if it sounded horrible, I eat a small snack to keep my stomach from being empty and to stabilize my blood sugar. No, I’m not diabetic, but it’s important to fuel your body while it’s working so hard to grow your baby!

I didn’t care for the saltine crackers everyone flocks to. I had more luck with bagels, mini pitas, English muffins, dry cereal, toast – all the carbs I normally stay away from. Let’s face it, you do what WORKS when you are pregnant – and that’s all I could handle for a while.

Then I graduated to cottage cheese & applesauce, Greek yogurt (full-fat) with a drizzle of agave nectar, or strawberry yogurt.

Sounds boring but it is quite the decadent feast and victory when it tastes good and stays down!

Once I could tolerate some proteins with the carbs, I made sure each snack/meal had some sort of protein in it. That really helped me feel better.

Portion control will help, too – just measure out 1/2 a serving size and see how it makes you feel when you eat it. I use a food scale because I’m very bad at eye-balling food portions.

AVOID FOOD SMELLS

Poor hubby. He knew this was coming… I put a semi-ban on cooking from the kitchen, asked him to grill as much as possible outside, or (if cooking was in the cards), I make a b-line for bed when he and Little Dude started to prep the food. Not only does food sound unappealing, but the smells of cooking food are no where tear tolerable for me. Some smells I can even get nauseous over all the way upstairs, as I hide in bed.

Hubby has been working insane hours, so I picked up some microwave dinners for him from Vitamin Cottage. Not ideal – but he can use them for lunch or dinner and doesn’t have to cook or clean up. Little Dude is still working on trying new foods, so his dinner has been the basic go-tos: leftovers, sandwich, quesadilla, breakfast for dinner, etc.

So my tip here is obviously to avoid food smells or any smells that make you yak. Easier said than done, but with a little rearranging and discussing short-term expectations, it is very doable and helpful!

HOT TEA

I found three teas that I’ve enjoyed this pregnancy so far.

Ginger, with a generous squirt of agave nectar, helps when I feel VERY nauseous.

Peppermint helps before or after a meal.

And when I’m bored with both of those, I mix it up with the Pregnancy Tea.

Being pregnant you have to stay hydrated. You’ll feel overly hydrated at times, but it is better than being dehydrated (which can make you feel more sick).

So when you are sick of plain water, make some tea. If you don’t like hot tea, brew it and let it cool for a yummy iced tea. If you want to freeze it into ice cubes and make yourself a homemade slushee, DO IT! If it sounds remotely good, give it a try. :)

ESSENTIAL OILS

You have to be VERY careful with essential oils because they are SO effective, but I like putting a drop of doTERRA peppermint oil in my water.

First reason: plain water can get boring.

Second reason: peppermint is beneficial for nausea.

I would NOT recommend using the cheapest oil you can find. There are different grades of oils – and even those that read “pure” may contain synthetic ingredients. eek!

I specifically use doTERRA because I know it is pure, therapeutic grade, safe and beneficial Especially while pregnant, you want to make sure there are no fillers or harmful substances in essential oil you use.

I called my OB’s office and specifically ASKED about using peppermint essential oil in my water and the nurse said it was actually a great idea.

Before you try essential oils in your water, or topically, please check with your doctor and read up on what each oil does. I just ordered Modern Essentials *4th Edition* a Contemporary Guide to the Therapeutic Use of Essential Oils so I can read up on any oil or condition and feel confident about what I’m using. You don’t want to use an oil that causes contractions, for example (well, I might retract that statement at 40 weeks pregnant).

SLEEP

When all else fails: sleep. Yes, during the day if at all possible. Get some blackout curtains or a sleep mask (I love mine!) and go for it!

I would nap when Little Dude napped. If he didn’t nap, I told him I needed to nap so I didn’t throw up and he would kindly say “ok, momma – sleep big!” and have quiet-time in his room (with a baby gate on his door so he wouldn’t wander around & get into trouble). Thank you Lord!

During the early weeks, hubby would get home from work and send me to bed. The guys would handle dinner and bedtime routine as I quickly drifted off to sleep. I could easily knock out 12 hours of sleep a night. Listen to your body and sleep as much as you can.

MUSIC

For me, worship music helped curb the nausea. Come, Holy Spirit, heal me! NOT joking!

If worship music isn’t your thing, try your favorite kind of music for a good emotional distraction.

TAKE A BATH!

I love baths! When I had melanoma, I was soooo sad I couldn’t soak in the tub (stitches, etc.) because it is one of my favorite ways to de-stress!

200% yes, you have to watch the temperature on your bath water while pregnant. I’ve read to invest in a non-mercury thermometer and make sure it is below 100 degrees for your bath.

My confession is that I don’t check the temperature but it is NOT hot.

The warm bath allows me to relax mentally and physically.

I hope this list helps you! What are some of your favorite and most effective ways to help combat morning sickness, all-day-sickness and pregnancy nausea?

Little Dude is going to be a BIG BROTHER!

Yes, even Little Dude “gets it” and is very excited! Before I even bought the pregnancy test, he came up to me and lifted up my shirt to say “HI BABY!”

I smiled with hope and said “I wish little buddy.”

I thought maybe he picked up on another lady at the library with a baby in her tummy – but then a couple days later, we had this encounter:

Normally, when I am sitting down and he wants me to get something for him (open the pantry, reach a Hotwheel that fell out of reach for him), he’ll say “momma up!” as he grabs my hand and pulls me that direction.

THIS time he said “Momma Baby, UP! Momma Baby, UP!”

Hmmmm. I was starting to think maybe he was right, but it was too early to test.

Then the weekend past and Monday rolled around and I went to my normal gym class where we do push-ups on yoga/exercise balls. As I rolled the ball up my torso to change push-up angels, I felt an extreme waive of nausea. I had to leave the class.

What do ya know, Little Dude was RIGHT! Pregnant!

I asked him if Jesus told him there was a baby in momma’s tummy and he just SMILED. Hmmmmm

Early on, weeks 5.5-7.5, I was having one-sided “pain” – so they ran an HCG test and did an early ultrasound. I was actually pretty nervous about it being ectopic. I know, that’s not a great topic to mention in a pregnancy announcement, but I think if we were all a little more open about our experiences, we would find it is more common than it is made out to be.

My HCG levels came back higher than they expected, so then I wondered if we were having TWINS – but the early ultrasound confirmed our little baby is in the right spot to grow and there’s one baby in there!

High HCG did equate more nausea for me. The sensitivities to smells are a big trigger for the “evening sickness” for me.

Yes, it is harder this time around. I don’t know if it is the hormones or chasing around a 2.5 year old that goes Lightning McQueen speed everywhere he goes, but I would say I’ve been sicker this time. All-day nausea up until week 11ish, “evening sickness” (instead of morning sickness) and very, very tired. TOTALLY normal! I know I’m in good company, but it doesn’t make the queasiness go away!

I will be posting my favorite nausea remedies and tips throughout this pregnancy. Not that I’m an expert, but I will share what works for me.

We are due October 30th – just six weeks after Little Dude’s 3rd birthday.

I decided to take his suggestion and have a handy reference sheet for the steps ready to share. I tend to use a digital Bible through YouVersion, but if I were to give a Bible as a gift to someone, I would highlight and bookmark these sections!

Totally awesome & if I could credit them, I would.

I decided to look up the verses to have them as, not only a quick reference, but something I can read when I need to be reminded of the Lord’s character.

In July (2012) I had melanoma removal on my right leg, and at that point, my dermatologist said she would see me every 3 months for a year, every 6 months the second year and then annually thereafter – as long as they didn’t find any more skin cancer.

October’s visit went smoothly and she didn’t find anything of concern.

January’s visit was a little more stressful: she did a punch-hole biopsy of a freckle that was right next to the melanoma removal. Happily,The Freckle 2.0 was atypical but not cancerous. Whew!

I took this picture of my scars last week – the larger scar (from melanoma removal) started as a 4-inch incision and has shrunk down and faded over the last 9 months. The smaller scar next to it is from January’s atypical biopsy.

Fast forward to this last Tuesday and it was time for another full-body skin check. I was feeling a little more experienced with the process, so I did my best to “sit on the fence” before I jumped to one side concluding I either did or did NOT have suspicious freckles to biopsy. I couldn’t have done it without prayer and support of those praying along side me.

My dermatologist closely investigating my freckle-map and asked her assistant to take notes of the size, shape, color of general areas. She didn’t find any suspicious spots this time! Praise God!

My next skin check is in July. It’s hard to believe that will bookmark a YEAR since my diagnosis and removal. I am such a different person because this melanoma journey. I feel like my thirst for God has increased – yet I admit I don’t understand Him all the time. We aren’t supposed to. I do know that He is my comfort, my healer, guide and my peace! I pray nearly every day for Him to give us the opportunity to share His love with others. The opportunity comes and I find because of my melanoma experience, I actually have more COURAGE to share what God has been doing in my life. Going forward, I would share what He is doing whether I’m sick or healthy – but this was certainly the kick in the pants I needed to prioritize that request from Him.

I feel like my focus has completely transformed. I care less about what people think of me and care more about what God thinks of me.

When the TV is on, I feel so disconnected from the majority of what airs. Put another way, it almost feels like I get to choose between the country and the city and would rather the slower pace of life.

I enjoy having down time (with my family and for myself) and not being continuously hooked up to social media. It is important to me to feel like I need to have friends over, rather than hop online for a quick social-media-fix.

I like falling asleep when the sun goes down, rather than staying up late then struggling with insomnia all in the same night.

My photography sabbatical is going very well. I feel like taking a step back has helped me realize where my strongholds were at home and with family life. It might just be God’s timing or it might be that I’m finally listening, but I’ve been able to hear God say “do this” and while I don’t feel I qualify, have followed through and enjoyed new experiences. Too vague for you?

In February, our worship pastor held auditions for worship band and I immediately felt God said “do this.” I thought “ok, but only because you said to. You know I enjoy singing but am not the best.” A couple weeks ago, I found myself on stage, singing into a microphone and NOT nervous. WHAT?! I sang in high school. I sing in the shower. We listen to & sing along with worship music at home. I have never been on stage singing in that capacity, but through God, I did. And I knew the sound guy could turn me down when I goofed. ;) I would have never found myself saying yes to this blessing before – one, because I didn’t listen to God and two, because band practice is on a day of the week I have spent the last 7 years photographing people on.

So God can use us even when we mess up!

Another example is being available, willing & able to share my health perspective and melanoma journey at a women’s brunch at church and also at MOPS.

This is coming from the shy & weary student who absolutely dreaded public speaking BOTH times I had to take it (high school & college).

It’s amazing how God transforms us… when we are willing!

Stay tuned for another big update… coming soon!

When Little Dude gets a cough, I add essential oils to his bathwater, his humidifier and even hot water in the sink while he’s bathing. If you haven’t turned the container around and read the label on store-bough vapor rub, you should. There’s a LOT of chemicals in there. Skin is our body’s biggest organ and anything you put ON it, goes into our body. Once our son had his first cough, I threw out the store-bought vapor rub we had in the medicine cabinet for 5+ years (ewww!) and immediately started using this homemade & chemical-free vapor rub. If you choose quality ingredients, yours can be organic and therapeutic grade. The better the ingredients, the more effective it will be! I researched vapor rub on Pinterest and combined 2-3 recipes I liked to this one below:

Homemade Vapor Rub

Ingredients

1/4 cup coconut oil (do not get “RBD Coconut Oil” which stands for “refined, bleached and deodorized.” )

1-2 teaspoons grated (I use a microplane) beeswax (found a small bar, 1 oz, at Vitamin Cottage for $1)

15-30 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

15-25 drops rosemary essential oil

10-15 drops lavender essential oil

with all of the essential oils, you can adjust the measurements to your liking… babies and kids don’t need as strong of a recipe as adults. I read a recipe that included white camphor, which is definitely too strong for little ones and I’ve read reviews that question it’s safety all-together. Read what each essential oil does and use your best judgement.

Instructions

Melt the coconut oil and grated beeswax in a microwave-safe dish or double-broiler on the stovetop.

Turn off the heat & stir in the essential oils.

Pour into a small glass or metal container.

Store in a cool, dry place for up to a year.

Here’s what it looks like before it cools off:

Here is what it looks like after it has cooled:

Use

The vapor rub will harden when it cools, which makes it harder to scoop out of the jar and apply.

I like to soften in in warm/hot water in the sink while Little Dude is taking a bath. By the end of his bathtime, it’s ready to use.

For babies, apply the vapor rub on their feet and then put socks on. You don’t want this getting in his/her eyes and you know how babies love grabbing their own feet.

I was introduced to doTERRA essential oils by Rachel via Instagram.

What are essential oils? “Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants.”

I honestly used to think essential oils were just for aromatherapy And by aromatherapy, I mean “I like the smell, so it puts me in a good mood.” ha! they actually can be used for aromatherapy, topical (on your skin…) or internally (drink it). Being a melanoma survivor, I’ve learned more about skin in the last 8 months than I did in school. Skin is the body’s BIGGEST organ. Sure wearing it on the outside makes it not feel like an organ, but that’s what it is. What we put on our skin, gets absorbed into our body. So whether we ingest essential oils in our water or rub them on our skin, they are working for & in our body. Cool, huh?

She sent me three tiny samples to review and post on Instagram. You can check those reviews out on my IG account.

Lavender, Lemon & Peppermint essential oils have a lot of versatile & powerful uses. Since they are very effective, you should definitely research each essential oil you use and make sure you need to use it.

Rachel sent this helpful link to get me started:

Each mini vial has between 10-13 drops of oil. Use this site: http://www.doterraeveryday.com/101-uses/ as a reference for ideas of ways to use each oil. If you only need a drop or two (to flavor water, etc.) just tap the bottom of the bottle. If you are using all of the oil in one or two recipes it’s easier to remove the plastic lid and to just pour out the oil. The mini samples bottles are not the most user friendly compared to the standard full sized bottles where the oil comes out in nice big fat drops easily!

I immediately wanted to make homemade MetroMint water. While we don’t have a reverse osmosis water filter, adding just 2-3 drops of peppermint to my filtered water tasted so much better than MetroMint. I love peppermint, so I was super excited to discover essential oil can be used in drinking water. Once I ran out of doTERRA peppermint essential oil, I grabbed the bottle of “the other peppermint oil” I was using topically. Two drops in the water. It smelled horrible and tasted worse…. and so my realization that no two essential oils are alike was born. doTERRA is Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, which (to me) means it’s made of high quality essential oil and there’s no fillers. I didn’t realize other oils could contain fillers. I mean, HOW rude! What a waste of our money and how do I know the “fillers” aren’t going to cause me mysterious or obvious health concerns? Anyways, I loved the peppermint essential oil! Add 3ish drops to 24 oz of water.

I took one look at the first suggestion for using lemon essential oil and decided THAT was meant for me!

“A Cure for Laundry Neglect. Lemon essential oil takes out ALL odor when you forget and leave your load of laundry in the washer way too long!”

Our son wears gDiapers and while we soak them in a bucket in the laundry room, they ARE diapers – so I thought lemon essential oil would be a great way to freshen up the load. It was great! There was absolutely no foul smell on the diapers or the washer. While I am thankful for our washer & dryer, I do think front-load washers come with their own set of problems. You really have to be diligent about cleaning out the rubber seal or things get funky REAL quick. Next project with the sample essential oils was with lemon essential oil again. I have to admit, I’ve never favored the lemon flavor or smell. It’s not BAD, it’s just that I could think of better tastes/smells. This lemon essential oil was completely pleasant to smell and taste. I tried a couple drops in my water and it was quite yummy.

The pictures that follow show how well it helped clean up red finger paint from our son’s bathroom.

I tried a store-bought cleaner that smelled of horrible chemicals and it did NOT remove the red stains. The stains were less than a day old… so I tossed that cleaner and vowed to never buy it again. I filled a spray bottle with vinegar and added several drops of lemon essential oil.
I used hot water for a quick spray-down and I sprayed the tile with the vinegar/lemon combo scrubbed….First round, it took most of the stain away, then I repeated the water and vinegar/lemon spray-down and let it SET for 10 minutes. That must have been the trick – to give the vinegar and lemon time to work their magic, because it wiped clean with a microfiber cloth. Little Dude thought the samples were so cute… he called them “baby size.” I have added 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil to his nighttime bath water. So relaxing & “mells good, momma!” I also added a couple of drops to the humidifier in his room to help him relax and relief congestion. He slept great that night!

I wanted to say thank you to Rachel for the introduction to such a wonderful line of products! I’m excited to switch over to using only doTERRA essential oils to ensure we’re using the healthiest option for our family!

Yesterday morning I had the opportunity to speak at our church’s Women’s Brunch on the topic of HEALTH.

What comes to your mind when you think of health?

The definition of health has definitely changed for me throughout the years.

My church friend, who organizes the brunches, invited me to speak because of my pins on Pinterest! I do have a healthy blend of health stuff on there: exercise, home remedies, food… along with chocolate and kids stuff.

I had 25 minutes to discuss my journey of discovering what health is to me, which coupled with my melanoma journey and most importantly, my walk with Christ. It turned into over an hour – but I was so blessed by these ladies’ attention, interest and questions. I hope they feel inspired to a new level of health: psychologically, physically, socially & spiritually.

First & foremost, I read Romans 14:1-23. I feel it is important to do your own research and make an informed decision with anything – but today’s topic was health and the Apostle Paul explains how to approach this with sensitivity:

Romans 14

The Danger of Criticism

1Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. 2For instance, one person believes it’s all right to eat anything. But another believer with a sensitive conscience will eat only vegetables. 3Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who don’t. And those who don’t eat certain foods must not condemn those who do, for God has accepted them. 4Who are you to condemn someone else’s servants? Their own master will judge whether they stand or fall. And with the Lord’s help, they will stand and receive his approval.

5In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable. 6Those who worship the Lord on a special day do it to honor him. Those who eat any kind of food do so to honor the Lord, since they give thanks to God before eating. And those who refuse to eat certain foods also want to please the Lord and give thanks to God. 7For we don’t live for ourselves or die for ourselves. 8If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9Christ died and rose again for this very purpose—to be Lord both of the living and of the dead.

10So why do you condemn another believer? Why do you look down on another believer? Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11For the Scriptures say,

“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,

‘every knee will bend to me,

and every tongue will confess and give praise to God.’”

12Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God. 13So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.

14I know and am convinced on the authority of the Lord Jesus that no food, in and of itself, is wrong to eat. But if someone believes it is wrong, then for that person it is wrong.

15And if another believer is distressed by what you eat, you are not acting in love if you eat it. Don’t let your eating ruin someone for whom Christ died. 16Then you will not be criticized for doing something you believe is good. 17For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18If you serve Christ with this attitude, you will please God, and others will approve of you, too. 19So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.

20Don’t tear apart the work of God over what you eat. Remember, all foods are acceptable, but it is wrong to eat something if it makes another person stumble. 21It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another believer to stumble. 22You may believe there’s nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who don’t feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right. 23But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.

With Romans 14 in mind, here’s some resources I’ve personally found helpful.
