Nathan is 10 months old! We've had a pretty adventerous month! First off, Nathan has a brand new set of tubes in. He seems like a happier baby overall, naps better but nightimes remain the same...boo, hiss.

This month he learned to be a little copycat (pretending to cough or sneeze)

He loves to dance! ( I promise we listen to more than black eyed peas...Ben has an obsession.)

So very talkative!

He also got two more teeth! Stands on his own + took TWO steps!

...for Nathan to get these tubes in his ears! He developed a cough on Saturday and it's become increasingly worse. He had a runny nose today and since the doc said he must be seen if sick prior to the surgery this Friday, I made an appt. He has another ear infection! That makes 5 in 4 months time. They gave us the go ahead to continue the surgery since he hasn't run a fever, I'm so thankful. Now we just wait!

Nathan is 9 months old! I feel like this month went on forever, thats a good thing! Lots has happened, ENT visit, sickies, milestones galore, well baby check, you name it! First off, his ENT visit. We arrived and he was checked over and said he definitely needed tubes in both ears, not only that, he was hosting a double ear infection and we didnt even know it! So that made 4 infections in 3 months time (2 of them doubles), at his 9 month well check he still had fluid in both ears, so since birth it hasn't gone away...poor kid! Anyway, the appointment is set for May 27th so hopefully he will have some relief afterwards! Once he's recovered we will commence sleep training. He's had some long stretches 1 or 2 times but he still gets up about 3 times a night.
   He's been popping out teeth, left + right...3 in one month! He's still skeptical about standing on his own but will zoom around on a walker (or turn any table in to one ), gets in to TONS of mischief with his brother, and is spitting out words left and right! So far he says baba, mama, dada, nana, mo (more!)...so cool! He's also eating 60% finger foods and 40% solids and like a champ I may add...not that it's made a dent in his nursing, the kid loves his milk. Which brings me to this...we made our next BIG breastfeeding goal!
   So very happy about that! I cannot believe in 3 short months I'll have a one year old again. WOW. I got some seamless paper this weekend so I'm hoping to do a mini 9 month shoot with him, that's if he'll sit still for me!
   His well baby appointment went splendidly. He weighed in at 19 1/2 lbs + 29 inches, while he is just as tall as Ben was at this age, he is 2 lbs lighter! Doc was very pleased with his growth and learning, even saying that he was a little ahead which is fantastic!

Well last nights ferberizing went down the hole. I was so discouraged I didn't even keep track and I just reverted back to our old habit of bringing N in to bed instead of spending the entire night in his room implementing ferber. All things must happen for a reason, i.e. missing N's ENT appointment last week, because we wouldn't have discovered his double ear infection that popped up out of nowhere. This is the 4th one in three months time. He's getting tubes (hallelujah!) on May 27th. I feel like shizz because I couldn't have picked a worse time to sleep train. Poor kid was probably in pain! Anywho, I've decided to put off all sleep training until he has the surgery. I'll be back to blog the process once again :)

Nathans nap schedule was so screwed up due to the holiday today (he only had 1 nap) that no matter what I did as far as the night routine goes (kept light on, read him books while he ate, jiggled his hands, moved around) I could NOT get him to stay awake. So obviously he didn't do any form of ferber for his initial bedtime

Night 4 was very very similar to night 3. Did same exact routine, he cried when I left. We did 1 5 minute round, soothed, he cried when I left but stopped after a minute or so. He woke back up at 10:30 + 12:30 but fell back asleep under the 5 minute mark. At 2:30 he woke up and I fed him, he nursed for about 20 minutes and fell asleep (no ferber), he then woke up at 6:30. Yes, I brought him in to bed with us...not gonna lie, I was exhausted. Night 4 felt like he's going backwards in a way but we're going to keep on truckin'.

So heres what went down in the beginning (skip if you've read already):
Bedtime (5)
Okay, here we are with night 3 and I'm hoping that this trend isn't a fluke. I'm blogging the bedtime results and then will add the rest in the morning. As I said last night, I wanted to be sure I put N down awake but wound down...this has NEVER happened in his short little life of his but he has to learn somehow right? Here is what usually goes down before bedtime: light play in his room or bath as needed, diaper and clothes change, snuggles, nursing and then lying him asleep in his crib. Tonight this is how things went: diaper and clothes change, nursed him with lights on and read him a book simultaneously so he would be calm but engaged enough not to fall asleep, rocked him for 5 minutes and laid him down fully awake. He cried from the get go. I decided what would be better is 5 min, 5 min, 10 min, 10 min etc instead of by the book which on night three seems pretty brutal (well, the way Nathan carries on, it would be brutal.) He cried all the way through the first 5, I soothed and shushed him (he made sure to give me the most pitiful look/cry ever just to break my heart a little more =P).He calmed down with his head down so I left the room, but he was awake and crying before the door shut. Two minutes later....silence. No frickin joke. 7 whole minutes and he put himself to sleep on the 3rd night!! This may actually be working, people! Tune in tomorrow for the rest of day 3 results :)

I can't even believe how well this is working. It seems as if there are still a lot of night wakings, but believe me, this is about half of what he normally does. At 10:25 pm he woke up, I planned on doing the 5,5,10 but he only cried 4 minutes and went back to sleep. I didn't even have to go in to soothe! Here is the BEST part...the little man slept until 4:30am ( <--- I want to be sure you can see it clearly =P ). So that is 9 1/2 glorious hours of sleep (well not counting those measly 4 minutes)!!! Of course I went to bed at 11:30 so I didnt get to take full advantage but I still felt better rested this morning. I fed him at 4:30 (out of nessecity, I was really full) and he slept until 6:30, again crying but falling back asleep before the 5 minute mark. He woke up for the day at around 7:45! All in all, pure awesomeness. Onward with another night!

So I started the night just as I had the night before. The only problem is that he's used to nursing and falling asleep. That kind of defeats the purpose of self soothing but oh well, we're working on it tonight. He did fall asleep while nursing and obviously I'm not going to wake him back up so he can self soothe. He did however wake up 45 minutes after I put him down and thats when I implemented the above (10,15) It was so much worse than the night before. I did some asking around and it seems like tweaking the times to suit you better helps a lot, so thats something else we are going to try tonight (I'm planning on 5,5,10,10 etc). These past few days Nathan is going much longer in between nursing sessions so maybe there is a change happening? He slept until 12:10am which is the norm. I felt most comfortable letting him eat again, this time I fed him in his room and laid him back in his crib (he fell asleep when he was done). Usually he would've ended up in the bed with us by now so thats a change (something I recognize is totally my issue). Now heres where the night deviated from others...he slept from 12:25 to 5am! In my zombie sleep state I brought him in to bed with us, he woke back up at 6:45 and then up for the day at 8. I'm sure if I would've just put him back in his crib after eating he would've slept straight through. Usually he's up at 2:30, 4:30. 6:30 and then up for the day at 8am. Onwards to night three!

Night wakings: no ferber implemented
So we've bitten the bullet and started ferbering Nathan as of last night. It was half planned, half spontaneous. I've been wanting to sleep train for a couple of months now but kept putting it off. Last night, no matter what I did, the boy would NOT go down to bed. I started the routine as normal and was rocking/feeding him by 7:30pm. By 9:30 I decided it was TIME. He cried for 5 minutes the first time, I patted and soothed him for a minute or so and left. He started wailing even harder with the second interval. Sweet baby J, it took everything to refrain from scooping him up in to my arms and telling him I'm sorry over and over again. I didn't give in though, 10 minutes approached and I went in and did the soothing once again. No kidding he was out in 2 minutes flat. He slept through until 3:30am which is MUCH later than normal (he's usually up by 2am), I don't know if this is because of the method or because he went to bed much later so I'm not getting my hopes up. Tomorrow night I'll hope to ferber his night wakings. I'm still not sure if I feel comfortable with it.

::: 8 Months Old! :::

Nathan is 8 months old! This past month has been HUGE for the peanut! First tooth, crawling, standing with assistance, pulling himself to kneeling and standing, and cruising furniture! Holy moly, things are happening way too quickly the second time around. He got his first tooth the day after he turned 7 months and it's still the only one. That doesn't mean that he doesn't try to use it with all his force, i.e. biting during nursing... O.U.C.H! Speaking of nursing, 1 more month until another huge breastfeeding milestone! It took a lot of work and commitment but it's as easy as breathing now :) N also got another ear infection this month which made 3 in a matter of 2 months time. He's had fluid in his left ear for as long as I can remember so he's off to the ENT. The appointment WAS 2 days ago but I totally forgot =/ So, its next Tuesday...I'll update once we know anything. This past Tuesday Nathan started giving kisses! If I ask him for one or tell him I love him there's a chance that he will give me a smack on the cheek or lips...it melts me down to a puddle! As for the monthly photos...they are getting, um, difficult. ha! The one above was the ONLY one in focus...but in the end I thought it was cute to show him how he really is...in to every single little thing and always on the go :)

My first baby is 3 already! What a change there has been in the last 6 months. Ben has actively been in OT and ST since he was 2 1/2 and has made great strides. We can hold conversations with him now and boy are they the silliest. He now has an imaginary friend...he doesn't come around a lot but it's hilarious when he does. His name is "scary monster" but apparently he is friendly as they come. Ben takes "scary monster" by the hand and leads him around the house, having little conversations with him. He's also really big in to playing out scenarios with his toys. He's big in to farms, linclon logs, train tracks, and building blocks at the moment. He's always singing and dancing whenever possible and it's quite possibly the cutest thing ever :) He had an "UP" themed birthday party which was a blast! Thanks to everyone who came and showed their love for our little guy.

Nathan is 7 months old! This has been a busy month for the little love :) All at once he learned to talk (said "da da") , push up on all 4's, crawl, and push himself up to sitting from crawling. Also, as of yesterday he has a tooth bud hanging out right below the surface waiting to pop through at any moment. I don't know how I feel about this, first off I love his little gummy grin, secondly...he is starting to bite (during nursing...no fun!). Since the last update I think he's managed to stay pretty healthy too, always good news!

Chris and I took the boys to the circus. It's the norm for homeless folks to be scattered all around the downtown area, especially after an event at US Bank arena. I ran back in to take Ben to the restroom while Chris was stuck in parking garage hell. A man who I think worked for the arena came out and brought an older gentleman an entire lunch, the man was very thankful, and Ben was curious. I told Chris that from now on if we ever attend an event and have Ben in tow, I want to be sure to bring something to give, to teach compassion. I don't like assuming they are alcoholics and the what not, that's not the point. The point is that you've helped someone in your community and I think it's very important to teach that to your children. I got a little hemming and hawing from Chris when I brought it up, only because shortly before I told him the story, we passed another homeless man who was screaming at passerby. Of course we would use our best judgement when it comes to the safety of our children but still I feel its important. What are your views?

Ben's speech update

Things have been progressing wonderfully since we started HMG and preschool for Bens speech. He's now putting together complex sentences, although not all the time but it's a step in the right direction. We've been working with our local early childhood center to determine Bens needs once he's released from HMG (they only provide treatment up to age 3) So after multiple screenings and meetings, we met with them last Friday for the results. Ben is no longer delayed in expressive communication which is excellent! He is however very delayed in phonology, which is him not using many consonants in his words making it hard to understand and they do want him to work harder to use long completed sentences instead of simplified sentences. In the end it was determined that he has a speech and language impairment. The next step is that he will have a specialist come to his classroom on tuesdays for an hour to work with him and see how he interacts with others in a structured setting. We will also meet with a S.T. once a week for a half hour. All of this will continue until November following the school year schedule, after thats up, he will be re-evaluated to see where his needs lie. I feel relieved that we have a long term action plan to get him on the right track!

Ben all of a sudden showed an intense want to be potty trained! For God knows how long I've been offering a diaper or underwear to let him know he had an option and not to push the issue (that backfired on us royally) and every time it was "diaper". Last Thursday when he woke up I asked him the same question and he chose underwear. We haven't really looked back since! He's worn a diaper at night to sleep but has been in underwear during the daytime with no accidents. Today he successfully stayed dry at school! I am beaming with pride, I can't help it :) Fingers crossed that things remain the same!

6 Month update

Today we had Nathans 6 month appointment! First about his weight. He was 17 lb 8 oz and dropped from the 75th percentile down to the 40th percentile. Dr. R pretty much blamed the nasty stomach bug that we all caught a few weeks ago and said he is obviously trying to catch up since he lost a lot of weight. She's not too worried at this point but said we will keep a close eye on it. He was 27 1/2 inches long (75th percentile) and exceeded pretty much every milestone except for full on crawling! They checked his ears with a tympanometry tool and both of them still had fluid remaining. So if Nathan gets another ear infection by 9 months or still shows fluid in his ear at his 9 month appointment he will be referred to the ENT for tubes. He got 4 shots and 1 oral vaccine and cried for the moment but was back to normal once I nursed him... overall, there are a few minor setbacks but he's doing so well!

So the road to 6 months was a little chaotic! Full of illness to be exact. Our entire household caught a stomach bug =/ Along with that Nathan also had RSV and a double ear infection, all of which resulted in 4 doctors visit and 1 ER visit. He's back to healthy now but his gag reflex is in full force so getting him to eat solids again is a task. Today he managed to only gag once which is a huge improvement! Little guy was up to 18 1/2 lbs at 5 1/2 months and lost 2 of those precious lbs during sick-o-rama. The pediatrician bumped up his 6 month WBC to 6 1/2 months so we can check on fluids in his ear, because of that I won't have official stats. When I do get them I'll be sure to post them here and in a new post (this is mainly for me, the ease of finding stats is important, people!).

Now enough of the heavy stuff. Nathan has been on prevacid which has worked miracles! He's a much happier baby all around. As for sleep, he is nowhere near sleeping through the night. However, we did discover that he does MUCH better lying on his tummy than back. I can get him to sleep from 7:30 or 8 until midnight or so again. There have been a few times where he's slept much longer, one night he actually slept 7 whole glorious hours! He bounced off track when the stomach flu hit but I think we are slowly getting back to his old schedule.

As milestones go, he's progressing beautifully! He's making consonant sounds and can fully sit up by himself! He rolls EVERYWHERE. One minute he'll be by the couch, the next he'll be over by the dining room table! He's getting good at getting his body off the ground but he doesn't grasp the fact he can prop himself on his knees, so he just does a push up all the way to his toes. I'm pretty sure he'll be mobile officially very soon!

Last but not least, we hit our biggest breastfeeding milestone yet. Now that we're here I don't see any reason why we can't continue until he's on whole milk. I'm totally giving myself a pat on the back, what a ride!

Oh thank god, it's *warmer*! Granted it's not going to last long but whatevs, I hate winter. Not only has it been freezing, but we've been stuck in the house with psycho illnesses that have resulted in 183,384 doctors visits (and probably that much in co-pays alone). We finally, FINALLY got out of the house today to play!

I'm questioning my "mother's instinct" at the moment.

Our household is suffering the worse virus, flu, you name it, that we've ever had. Today marks day 4 for Ben and day 3 for Nathan. Vomiting, diarreha, fevers hovering around 101.5 all.of.the.time. not to mention they have (according to the doctor we saw on Sunday) upper respitory infections. The virus hit Chris and I hard and fast. I've recovered (with the exception of sleep) and Chris is still ill but seems to be on the mend, which is why I don't understand why the boys show no sign of getting better.

I mentioned earlier that I took them to see the pedi on Sunday. The doc we saw was new to us and his bedside manner was sorely lacking. I felt like the whole visit was a waste of time. He said we're doing all we can do and just ride it out, he did however say that if Nathan hasn't stopped vomiting by Monday to call and let them know. Monday comes and I called to inform the ruely nurse (doesn't seem like I'm getting lucky this week) that he was still vomiting. She made me feel silly for calling and again, I felt like the whole thing was a waste of time.

So here they are, another horrid day and I'm questioning my mother's instinct. I feel like this might have developed in to something more than a silly virus, but after seeing the doc and speaking to a nurse I'm starting to feel like I'm overreacting. I mean if it were something worse, wouldn't the medical professionals be a little more concerned?

Nathan is hoarse and cries out in pain when he coughs. Neither boys have had a full nights sleep in 5 days. I've got an endless rotation of puked up on sheets, clothes, and burp cloths in the wash, the motrin is running out, and so is my patience.

I love the boys' Pedi but she is never available for sick visits. The nurse's there are hit and miss. I know if I called back I could get a different nurse who would be more sympathetic but that shouldn't be the case. I'm on the verge of finding a new office altogether even though we love their regular doctor.

Well at this point I'm just a rambling mess but I needed an outlet. Let's hope the next post I get to gush about how healthy the boys are....fingers crossed.

So Ben had his first ever operation today/ As parents we were nervous wrecks and didn't quite know what to expect. He had issues with one of his testicles from birth and a hernia had developed over Christmas so both issues needed to be fixed. To add insult to injury we had to drive through a freezing ice storm to get there at 5:30 in the morning but I digress....
We arrived and when they gave Ben the mask for anesthesia, I was a puddle. He had no idea what was happening and then just passed out! They also gave him a spinal anesthetic as well. He slept in the recovery room for about an hour and woke up a tad bit cranky but nothing like I was seeing with other kiddos (so sad!) He got a Tag Explorer (early bday gift) for doing so well! The incisions are much bigger than I thought they'd be, and recovery has been the opposite of what most people had described. He didnt walk around the house until about 5 or 6 houts after surgery and was in a lot of pain the entire day, regardless of medication. He was a trooper though and kept the complaints to a minimum, only had 1 meltdown the whole day!
Of course we gave in to his every whim, we even let him watch that ungodly ABC dvd that we bought from Target (its going in the goodwill pile.)
Hopefully tomorrow is a better day and he's not in so much pain
