During the months since UDS – P in Orlando, FL, the Summit Hackers have been hard at work. As of right now, we have modified more than 2400 lines of code and fixed 24 bugs. Most of those 2400 lines of code have been adding new features and finally getting around to adding a better looking schedule view when on your personal device. While we have made great strides towards getting Summit to be perfect, there is still more work that needs to be done. Our first big test for these new features will be the Linaro Connect Q1.12 event that starts next Monday, February 6. I have the pleasure of being able to go to this event, so I hope to obtain feedback while I am there on ways to further improve Summit for next UDS. Please feel free to poke around with the changes and provide any feedback you may have!

Also, thanks to the work of Stuart Langridge, the Summit agenda view will soon be mobile friendly, making it easy to follow your schedule on your cell phone!

If so, you have probably had the pleasure of using Summit. Most people know that in the past Summit has not been the easiest to play with. This past 6 months the Summit Developers have been busy doing tons of work on Summit making huge improvements to the system.

During UDS-O in Budapest, the Summit Development team created a huge list of work items. We had a total of 29 action items come out of the UDS session, as well as other maintenance and development things that needed to happen. 20 of these action items were completed, as well as many other things that didn’t make the action items list. By my count, we had 122 code commits and fixed 64 different bugs.

This work was done by a very small team, consisting mostly of volunteers. We added three new community developers this cycle, Jamal Fanaian, Penelope Stowe and David Callé. Hopefully they will continue doing great work on Summit with us. We also had new commits from Maris Fogels and Danilo Segan from Canonical and Linaro respectively. We also continued to have great work done by Nigel Babu, Michael Hall and James Westby.

This Wednesday (November 2) at 12 noon EDT is our planning session for Summit during the UDS-P cycle. If you are interested in helping to shape the future of Summit and UDS, please stop by the session!

I look forward to working during this next 6 months with the great team of developers that we have, and hope that we are able to recruit a few new people to join in the fun!

This is a paste of the email I sent to the Ubuntu LoCo Contacts and Ubuntu LoCo Directory Mailing Lists:

Greetings;

The LoCo Directory Developers have been hard at work in the past few weeks
and this morning pushed out a new release of the LoCo Team Directory. One of
the major changes in the new version of the LoCo Team Directory is that
local times are finally displayed on event pages thanks to Michael Hall. The
time zone displayed is based upon the time zone specified for the venue that
is used. For example, if the venue you are using for your event is in
Orlando, Florida, you would need to set the time zone for the venue to
US/Eastern and the event will display the time in EST. To make this work
though, all venues that are currently in the LoCo Team Directory need to be
updated to reflect their correct time zone.

There were many other bugs fixed in this release which you can view in
Launchpad. Another big feature is that you can “turn off” registration to an
event in the LoCo Team Directory for instances where registration is being
handled elsewhere and providing a link to that registration site. We have
also fixed the search function on the LoCo Team Directory which is now a
site-wide search.

Something else that I wanted to mention is that there is now a mailing list
specifically for discussion about the LoCo Team Directory. You can sign up
for the mailing list and join the discussions by sending an email to

Today Jono Bacon made a blog post about starting a Ubuntu Power Users Community. I personally think that this is a great idea and would love to help out with starting this community. I spoke with Jono about this on IRC, and would like to hear from other people who are interested in getting this setup. Jono originally tweeted calling this new community ‘Ubuntu Tweakers’ and nixternal quickly pointed out that a tweaker is a meth head, another definition according to Urban Dictionary is “Someone who constantly makes slight alterations on (usually a very specific) object, i.e. computer, software, automobile, etc” so I still believe that the name Ubuntu Tweakers is a good choice.

I was thinking that a possible good starting point for this community would be to have a session at the upcoming UDS related to it. I know that a lot of people won’t be at UDS, however remote participation is a big part of UDS, and I believe would be a great starting point for this. Let me know your thoughts and opinions on this. Feel free to contact me via email, leave a comment here, or on IRC.
