Today Jono Bacon made a blog post about starting a Ubuntu Power Users Community. I personally think that this is a great idea and would love to help out with starting this community. I spoke with Jono about this on IRC, and would like to hear from other people who are interested in getting this setup. Jono originally tweeted calling this new community ‘Ubuntu Tweakers’ and nixternal quickly pointed out that a tweaker is a meth head, another definition according to Urban Dictionary is “Someone who constantly makes slight alterations on (usually a very specific) object, i.e. computer, software, automobile, etc” so I still believe that the name Ubuntu Tweakers is a good choice.

I was thinking that a possible good starting point for this community would be to have a session at the upcoming UDS related to it. I know that a lot of people won’t be at UDS, however remote participation is a big part of UDS, and I believe would be a great starting point for this. Let me know your thoughts and opinions on this. Feel free to contact me via email, leave a comment here, or on IRC.

One of the changes in Lucid is that there are no longer tooltip popups when you mouseover appindicator icons. One of these icons is the battery icon. Now, in order to get your battery status, you must click on the battery icon. You then have to click in the window that you were previously working in to continue working. In previous versions of Ubuntu, all you had to do was move your mouse over the battery icon, see the status, and then keep on working. This new change is adding two additional steps to check the status of your battery, which takes extra time, plus reduces usability. I have filed a bug against this, and have also sent an email to the Ayatana Discussion list voicing my concerns. I’d like to know what your thoughts are, and hopefully this can be changed back!

It is my pleasure to announce a new project to better the Ubuntu.com website experience, specifically for users who prefer a language other than English. The new project, called Website Localization will put a short (4-5 word) message on any www.Ubuntu.com web page directing users to more resources in their preferred language.

This project has two main parts to it. The first part of the Website Localization project is the technical aspect of the project. It is the goal of the project to create a script that will pull out of a users web browser their preferred language. After obtaining this information, the script will cross reference this language against a list of languages that have approved resources offered, and then display a short link to their languages landing page.

The second part of this project is creating landing pages for as many resources as possible. This part of the project will be done by LoCos and the i18n team. The landing pages will be on the wiki, and will be ever changing to direct users to the best information that we can give them.

Currently, the goal is to have the project completed and implemented by the end of May. I would also like to have a working demo of the project by April 19th so that we have plenty of time to fix any problems that arise prior to the final implementation of this project.

I can’t do all of this myself, so I am going to need help from the Ubuntu community. At this point, I need some assistance with the technical side of the project. I need a few people to create the script that will detect the users preferred language, and then show them a link to the landing page in their language. If you have the skills needed to help out with this Website Localization project, please send me an email with your name, launchpad account, a little bit of information about the experience you have and your general ability (time zone, and anything else that may help me out). My goal is to get a group of a few people to work on the technical aspect of this project and have a meeting in the next few weeks to discuss the project in a little more detail, and determine the best way to make this happen.

I am not an artist (and I don’t know how to use programs like Inkscape) so Martin was even nice enough to teach me how to edit the file so I don’t print a business card with his name on it. You can download the source file by visiting Martin’s website.

Also, you will need to install ‘texlive’ package to get the correct fonts.
