Fancy Interview Styles Using CSS and Shortcodes

One of my favorite things to do online is read the massive amounts of interviews available. There’s always a ton of information to be gleaned from them, and good interviews are full of brilliant ideas and tips. My favorite part about them are when they include life stories and lessons learned. One thing, though, that I’ve noticed is that the majority of people do not take the time to make their interviews look good. In my opinion, this is almost as essential as conducting a good interview.

There have been times when I’ve been lost (especially in 3-4 person interviews) about who’s talking and have to scroll around the page to figure it out. When I started giving my own interviews I decided to break the bad trend of poorly styled interviews.

Sometime in the middle of 2010, I came across this post by Nicolas Gallagher. When I saw it, I realized it was the answer to the poorly styled interview problem. I immediately began to work with what Nicolas had demonstrated and came up with a handy and good-looking way to style my interviews.

You can see the final result on one of the finalized interviews on my Interviews page. Keep in mind that IE users won’t see the sweet looking styles, but it will still look good.

Sometimes, You’ve Just Gotta’ Do It.

When I was younger, my family and I frequently swam at a place called Lava Hot Springs in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho. On the deep end of the pool, they have an olympic sized diving platform built with three different levels, the highest being 33 feet above the water. My family and I would always taunt each other with dares to climb to the top and jump. For me, it was mostly all talk. “Someday,” I would respond. Truth was, I was terrified of heights and had very little desire to leap off such a height to my almost certain death. Having seen more than one person carried out on a stretcher after jumping reinforced that thought.

One day, however, I could not resist the taunts any longer. My two brothers had already taken up the challenge and leaped from the top platform. I would forever be thought of as a big sissy if I didn’t do it too. When you’re in Jr. High, things like that matter a lot, and the last thing I wanted was to have a reputation of being a panty-wearing sissy wuss boy.

I’m Taking the Leap to Self Employment

This last week, I was laid off from my full-time job as a QA Engineer. The company I was working for ran out of funds and the majority of us found ourselves packing our bags and heading home a little early. So much for “stability.” That was Groundhog Day.

I suppose it probably caught some people by surprise… but the writing had been on the wall for quite a while, so I had already prepared myself mentally for the news, so when it came it didn’t feel like a semi-truck full of bricks hitting me. Actually, it felt very much like a burden lifted off my shoulders. All of a sudden I could do whatever I wanted.

The only problem was that I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do. So I did what any other person would have done. That night I spiced up my résumé and began searching for another full-time job, scheduling a couple interviews for the following days.

By end of week I had completed 3 job interviews. As I exited each interview it felt like a dark cloud kept looming around in my head. I felt good about how I performed in the interviews, so what was it?

I realized the thundercloud in my head was the thought of joining the rat race on someone else’s terms and working a full-time job again. What I really wanted to do was work for myself, on my own terms, and not be held back by what someone says I can and cannot do.

I didn’t make the decision to freelance immediately, but because I had already had interviews, I knew I needed to make it soon. If I were to be offered a job and still be wavering in my decision, I would probably fold. Being religious, I spent quite a bit of time praying and reflecting on the needs of my family vs. getting another full-time job vs. working for myself, and by the time Sunday evening was drawing to a close, I had decided to strike out on my own.

So here I am. As of Monday, 7 February 2011, I’m a freelance web designer, consultant, copywriter, and application designer.

Am I nervous? Yes. But I’m doing something I love and taking a path I’ve dreamt of taking for a long, long time. It’s going to be a hard road ahead for a while, but I look forward to what the future brings.

Bow Giggles sells extremely adorable bows for little girls. My little girls have a few of them and absolutely love wearing them. This was a large and very fun project to work on. South Jordan Community Theatre

The South Jordan Community Theatre is only a few years old but is well known for its quality productions. They needed a website that allowed their staff to make easy schedule changes. Preemie Babies 101

Afton wanted to start a support group and community for parents of preemie babies to come together, share stories, and learn more about premature birth. Because there is not a lot of information out there about premature births, we found it appropriate to name it Preemie Babies 101, a place where people just getting their feet wet can be introduced and learn all they want.

It is quickly growing into one of the largest gatherings for learning about preemie babies, and as such a new website design is in the works, complete with a new Preemie-Babies branded forum.

Believe in the Power of Your Child’s Dreams

A quick note. I’m not exactly sure what inspired this post; it’s still a little scattered in thought. I suppose I needed to remind myself that as I raise a family, I shouldn’t let what I want for my children be a barrier to their progress. I believe that we have a responsibility to teach our children correct moral principles and a responsibility to help them succeed.

Through the years I’ve worked with a lot of youth. I love how vibrant and energetic they are. I enjoy their company because they remind me of when I was younger, full of energy, and able to run a few miles without feeling like my lungs were going to explode. I’m not a decrepit old geezer, but I still feel way too old for my age.

It’s interesting that adults expect teens in high school and even college students to know what they want to do with the rest of their life. It’s actually rather absurd, really. The world is full of opportunity and after living 19 to 23 years of life with very little “real world” experience, how on earth are they supposed to know what to do with themselves in the career-driven and working world?

Do you remember hearing the words, “When you grow up you can be whatever you want to be”? It’s frequently used by adults attempting to placate a curious and day-dreaming child, but once they get older it loses its savor.

As adults we often limit our children’s choices as they age. We drag them into a reality that we create for them-saying they can and cannot do something because of their talents. We imagine their limits whether they’re true or not, and we put these imaginary limits on younger generations because we’re afraid of failure and the unknown.

I love WordPress. It’s powerful, mostly efficient, and super easy to use. Every client I’ve ever had has always asked for one thing in particular: “I want to easily change things without going into the code.” WordPress lets them do that.

Today as I was building a client site who wanted to use image captions, I realized that I didn’t like the way WordPress handles their captions. And from what I can tell, most theme developers overlook image captions in their designs as well, I suppose it’s because most bloggers provide the image description in the paragraph leading up to the picture, or in a paragraph right after.

Well, for those of you who want to use image captions and give them a new look, this post is for you…

How to Brainstorm for Success: Part 3 – Let the Rain Come Down

Before the first rainy season in Guatemala, the locals would tell me that I had never seen rain before. I, of course, was hesitant to believe seeing how I’ve been in some torrential downpours. When the first rains hit; however, I realized what the locals meant. Within minutes, the cement-lined streets quickly turned into rivers, filled with water. Within minutes, I was soaked. Not even the gargantuan paraguas (umbrella) that I was holding could save me from the storm. I must have gone through at least 5 paraguas during each rainy season–maybe more.

I learned that I never seen rain before, and any “torrential downpour” I’d previously experienced suddenly became moot. I’ve been searching through boxes at home looking for the pictures I took, but haven’t found them yet. When I do, I’ll post them.

As you begin your brainstorming session, you’ll need a way to document your ideas. I’ve written down different methods that I use, I hope you find them helpful.

Now that you’re all set up and ready to go, you can focus on technique. Remember, brainstorming is about idea generation, not idea examination and organization. Once again, these are all techniques I’ve used at various points and over time have found them quite useful. You can an experiment and find which one you like best. The Delusion of Control and the Power of Choice

In my book, having control is a dangerous delusion–especially in business. How can you claim to be in control, when agency is a universal principle?

At any time any person could quit, sabotage your project, eat your lunch (gasp!), steal your thunder, fire you, raid your desk, and the list goes on.

Control is a delusion. You don’t have control.

What you do have is the power to choose.

The way you conduct yourself at home, work, online, and in the public eye has the power to persuade others to help you and be better people. If they decide to berate you and be nasty, they still can, but the way you act is a big determining factor if they will or not.

Employers who choose to treat their employees with respect and intelligence will find their employees will respect them in return and choose to work harder for them.

Freelancers who choose to treat their clients intelligently and with respect, will find that their clients will do the same in return.

Parents who love, respect, and especially choose to listen to their children will find their children choosing to listening in return.

It’s all about choice. Employees will be disgruntled, clients angered, and children rebellious, especially when we try to control them.

Choose to treat them right, and they’ll choose to follow you.

Summer Lessons in the Fall

Tomorrow marks the first day of fall; summer is ending, the leaves are changing color, and playtime is over. Well, really hard playtime is over anyway. For me summer means traveling nearly every weekend, bratwursts, steaks, shorts, watermelon, gaining weight, buying new pants that fit, swimming, more swimming, and lots of unbearable heat.

I grew up in Star Valley, Wyoming—an area of the world where the four seasons are very distinct—and it was the fall that marked a new year: school starts, the harvests end, the holidays begin, and playtime comes screeching to a halt. For me, fall marks a new era where I rededicate myself to my work and goals. I start losing those extra pounds, I eat healthier, and I travel less frequently.

As summer draws to a close, I thought it fitting to relate a few lessons I’ve learned over the past few months.

How to Brainstorm for Success: Part 2 – Preparing for the Storm

This post is the second post in the “How to Brainstorm for Success” series. If you missed the first post, check it out here: “How to Brainstorm for Success: Part 1 – An Introduction to Brainstorming” where we briefly discuss different brainstorming stages.

Have you ever been laying down at night waiting to go to sleep, or been on a nice afternoon walk and the ideas just kept rushing into your head? I’ve been there way too many times. I love it when this happens, but what really drives me nuts is when it happens and I’m not prepared. I’ve since learned to always keep a notebook and pen on my bed stand, and I usually have something to take notes on when I’m out and about.

With that in mind, I’ve prepared a few simple preparation ideas that can help you be prepared for brainstorming. To effectively brainstorm, you don’t need to meet all the criteria I lay out below. These are merely instruments and ideas to cater to an ideal mood and mindset that lets the lightning come down.

Gather the appropriate materials.

Technically speaking, all you need to brainstorm is something to write with and something to write on. I have a legal pad holder and a pen set aside for brainstorming, it doubles as my idea book and a brainstorming book.

I prefer brainstorming with a pen and paper so that my mind is free to roam and write ideas down as they come to me, and some of my ideas come as sketches, shapes, or equations or something that is not easily and quickly recorded on the computer. Working with pen and paper lets me quickly sketch those down. I occasionally use a computer to brainstorm, but I’ve found that it’s too distracting and limits what I can add to my brainstorming paper (more about this in part 3).

Some other good materials to have on hand but that are not necessary are sticky notes, rulers, different colored pens (or colored pencils), and a ~~whoopie cushion~~ soft chair. In my point of view, the fewer distractions you have, the more effective your brainstorming session will be.

Inspiration for a Tuesday Afternoon #2: Rethinking Advertising

The internet has opened up a whole new playing field for marketers. Now a lot of people think that marketing online is the same as marketing offline, but there’s so much more to it. The interent allows people to connect with each other in ways that people have never thought of before.

If you browse around from webpage from webpage, you find that most websites have banner ads (mine currently doesn’t, although I am considering it). Banner ads are the standard internet marketing device. They’re easy to make, and when placed in the right locations can provide the supplier and affiliate with mucho mula.

I’d like to introduce you to another style of advertising.

Why Doing Nothing can be Doing More

I’m amazed at how many work-a-holics there are in the world. Just today I read a blog post about a guy who was aggravated because he’d heard another man say he was just killing time. “How dare he!” the blog author thought as he considered clobbering the other man. “Doesn’t he know that time is precious, and I don’t have any of it? How dare he be unproductive and do nothing!”

The blog author then proceeds to discuss all the things he does and how he as a serious businessman doesn’t even have the time to sleep. His plan? Free up as much time as he can to do what he wants do and go where he wants to go. But to “waste” time or “kill” time? Forget it. I’m afraid this man is on the road to burnout.

Here are my issues with this type of thinking and why I believe sometimes it’s best to, yes, do nothing.

If You Don’t Take a Break, You’ll Burn Out

To live your life never wasting a moment, but always doing something is tough stuff. We all love a hero, and we all love the stories of people who accomplished great things. Those stories and people are inspiring and they push us to do more and be better people. We assume that to be like these people, we have to work harder and be better than the next guy. We believe that we don’t have any time to waste. To some extent, it is true. You don’t want to sit on an idea forever. Ideas don’t create income. Action creates income.
