The Most Expensive Car I Ever Drove.

I was lucky enough to drive a new Mercedes-Benz S550 this morning. MSRP around $100,000. The most expensive car I’ve ever driven. I didn’t like it.

Of course this is my opinion. I like smaller sport sedans like the RS4/S4 and M3. I like to feel the road and enjoy the feedback most German sedans give me. But in the S550, I felt totally disconnected from the road. It’s the kind of car I would have gotten car sick in when I was a kid.

The power is good and comes on silky smooth. The steering is precise, but still a bit too powered for my pleasure. All the tech in the cabin can be intimidating at first, but once you get used to all the controls, you will find they are in very intuitive locations. The seats are perfect and would provide great support for long drives.

But for $100,000??? You get just as much tech, more horsepower and, in my opinion, a better looking car in things like the new M56 from Infiniti or the M5.

First Four Days with the iPad.

My first four days with the iPad has opened my eyes to the potential of this device. Right now, very few apps take advantage of the full potential of the iPad.

Most were quickly “upgraded” from their iPhone versions so they would scale nicely on the larger iPad screen and be available at launch. Obviously, the best is yet to come. Now that developers have the actual device, rather than a simulator on a computer screen, I believe we are going to soon see some very deep, immersive, and useful applications in the near future.

Unlike the iPhone though, I believe the iPad can be much more than just a place to consume content. Right now, I’m typing this blog post on the virtual keyboard on the iPad. I’m VERY pleased with how fast I can type on this keyboard. At the correct angle, I can type just a fast as my real keyboard. And simple things like the double tap on the space bar for a period (like on the iPhone) help as well. I find myself double tapping my Mac keyboard all the time now expecting a period to appear.

Right now I’m DESPERATE for a true Facebook client for the iPad as well as a well thought out Twitter client. This size screen is perfect for a multiple column Twitter client like Tweetdeck. Although Tweetdeck is already available for the iPad, you can tell it’s first version was very quickly put together and wasn’t very well thought out. I hope a usable update comes along soon. For now I will stick with the single column Twitterific.

The potential is there for some truly remarkable, productive, change how you do things, iPad apps. They are coming, I can feel it. I just wish I had the patience to learn Objective-C because I would love to be part of this great platform and it’s future.

The new Doctor is better than I expected.

I saw the debut of Matt Smith’s Doctor last night and I have to admit, I was impressed. Like he has said in some interviews, his version of the Doctor is a bit mad, and that shows. His Doctor is very ADD and head-in-the-clouds, which is kinda fun.

Of course David Tennant had his mad moments. I especially liked it when David’s Doctor would go off on fast rambling spats of technobabble. I was surprised and relieved to see Matt Smith was able to do the same.

The new Tardis is brilliant. I really hope we get to see more of the interior than in previous series.

The Doctors new companion is Amy. Amy is DEFINITELY no Donna or Rose, but closer to Martha. I don’t want her to be just some damsel in distress all the time. I liked it when Donna, Rose and Martha could kick some ass on their own and even save the Doctor every now and then.

The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the new opening sequence. I absolutely LOVED the previous seasons opening theme. It was strong and full of energy. Everytime I watched an episode I would crank up the volume when the theme music came on.

The new theme music is more subdued and kinda dreamy like. Hard to explain. But the hard strings and underlying beat of the previous series are gone.

So yes, I feel relieved. I feel that Doctor Who is again in good hands and I’m also excited to see what more of Steven Moffats writing will bring to the series.
