The Design of Poster

Final Product for Assigment 3

This is the poster that I design to bring awareness to the public so that they care more to the environment especially trees.

Statement: Care for nature, care from nature.

The design:

Color theme: Green and blue to indicate the harmony of nature.
Tone: Blur at the back to show the distance of far and near.
Balance: I make this poster balance by placing a contrast element at the center surrounded by the harmony elements. The focus point of the poster will be the tree (Contrast element) at the center and it is difference from the trees behind. The wings and small trees behind are similar and carry the harmony element.

Project Objectives:

The primary objective of making this poster is to raise the awareness of public on the importance and advantage of taking care of nature and stop deforestation.
Other than that, it is to relate the idea of all the previous assignments with the current assignment. In assignment 1, I drew a symbol with a tree on top of an Earth. The idea is about the importance of tree and to show the situation where tree absent. While in assignment 2, my idea is to show the scene where tree present. The idea is completely difference with assignment 1. This is because I want to show the obvious difference between before and after deforestation. To link the ideas with assignment 3, I will produce a poster with tree as a highly essential element in nature. The idea is to draw the tree and environment as beauty as possible and carry a message to stop deforestation, love nature.

Approach:

I will use those basic tools in illustrator, such as pen tool, live paint bucket, shapes, brush and so on to draw the background.
Then I will use variety of effects, such as outer glow, feather, blur, and shadow to enhance the drawing.
For the text, I use type tool.
To reduce the size of the file and make my working effective, I raster some patches.
Also, I use gradient, opacity, mask and live trace to make the layers of difference objects look difference.
Finally, I will update my blog frequently.

Roles and Responsibilities:

August 20, 2008 – I updated my blog with the latest research done together with the idea and statement for this assignment.
August 21-23, 2008 – I searched for some posters and useful pictures as reference and started to sketch my poster.
August 24, 2008 – I uploaded the references and sketches to my blog.
August 25, 2008 – I started to draw the poster as planned and at the same time write down the process of making, which was later uploaded to my blog.
August 26, 2008 – I was on the half way of finishing my poster, so I referred to my tutor for some comments on how to improve it.
August 27, 2008 – I will continue doing the poster. (Until it is done)
August 30, 2008 – Make final retouching and improvement.
Before September 9, 2008 – The poster must be done and I will rearrange and upload all the documents in my blog.

Comment:

When drawing the poster, I am very worry of encountering the “Unknown error” and I did encounter it but soon I find out the causes. When I input the text into my poster, the problem occurs unless I remove the text from the poster. But still I am not sure of the main causes.
August 26, my friend teaches me how to raster an image with many patches. It helps a lot especially when I want to edit the poster.
At the same day, I meets Madam Ling. She gives lots of comments on my poster and it is indeed useful to me. I learn about clip mask as well.
The difficulties I face in doing the poster are when choosing the most suitable colour to suite the theme. Other than that, I am overwhelmed by the "unknown error" (I know how to avoid it now).

After having some comments from tutors and friends as well, I have decided to make some retouches to my poster. I appreciate those comments and it is very useful.

Summary of tools used in assignment 3.

For the tools section, I create a diagram for it.

I had descripe most of them in previous assignment, except the blend tool and type tool.
Blend tool: It is used when we want to duplicate patches in between 2 patches in a straight line.
Type tool: A basic tool to insert texts, we can later edit them.

The Process

1. First of all, I create a general background for the poster with regtangle tool plus radial gradient.

2. Then, in the 2nd layer, I draw the green land with pen tool. The land is next duplicated and reshaped. As shown below:

4. OK, now I have the very general outline of my poster. Then next thing to do will be inserting some text. As for me, I will insert my statement: "CARE FOR NATURE, CARE FROM NATURE." (in another layer) using type tool.

5. After editing the text, including the colors, size and style, I start with the focus point of my poster, that is to copy the tree from assigment 2 and make the "wings".

6. In another smaller window, I trace the wing from my refrences and paste it at my poster in another new layer.

7. Next, I edit the wing and add effects on it (glow and feather). Also, I reduce its opacity to make it more lovely. After that, it is duplicated and reflected for the other part. Then adjust the transpirancy and add in some gradient.

8. Following that will be pasting my "Tree" from assigment 2 into this poster. It is the back up file when I was doing assigment 2...Luckly it is still usable, but it looks a bit difference.

9. After that, I decorate the land with trees and some flower. The small tree is traced from my sketches. I then duplicate it and edit it.

10. Next, I insert text at the bottom part of the poster using type tool.

Below is how I make the text look like as it is glowing. The effect I use is outer glow for the text and feather for the colum.

11. Then, I paste my symbol from assigment 1 at the bottom-right of the poster. Below is the symbol together with its title.

12. So the poster should looks like this at this stage. Looks simple but it actually needs a lot of works.

The Statement and idea.

Based on the research, my statement will be:
CARE FOR NATURE, CARE FROM NATURE.

Description:
When we take good cares of our environment, there is no doubt that we can enjoy our live more in a healthy environment. That's the care from nature when we protect it from destruction.

Idea:
So, my idea for this assigment will be to design a poster with landscape. Based on the research done, most deforestation are man-made. When forest are destroyed, man will be the one who suffer in return. So, in order to gain protection from the nature, we must first protect it! Imagine if deforestation continues without limit... and when it comes to the last tree on the earth. that tree will be the only hope for us to survive - Tree of Life. As a conclution, the idea is to create awareness on the important of taking care of nature and stop deforestation.

As requested, I must do further research on what, why and how global warming is affecting our environment, and come up with a statement and brief description on the area of choice in the context of global warming. So below will be the research :

The effects of deforestation on environment.

A. Effects on Biodiversity:

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) defines biodiversity as "the wealth of life on Earth, the millions of plants, animals, and micro-organisms, the gens they contain and the intricate ecosystems they build into the living enviroment."
Causes extinction of wild life.
Leads to diminished gene pool.
As the planetary gene pool continues to diminish, there are less oppertunities for advancements in many fields, especially medicine.
Soil erosion occurs, the forest becomes less capable of surviving big storms, and the whole forest begins to degrade and eventually die.
Destroys the source of life of the forest dwellers and animals that live in the forest.

C. Why deforestation occurs?

There are people that see the forest as sources of money. These people exploit of the forest. They cut down trees for rare, exotic timber that sell at high prices. Their primary concern is profits. In the short term, they can make huge profits selling exotic timber. If this is continued for some time, eventually, there will be no more trees to cut down. People who make their living cutting and selling trees will go bankrupt.

That show the values of forest, not in term of money but in the important.

The last assigment for CG in this semester. The task is to draw a poster related to your previous assigments. I should start doing it after hand-up assigment 2.

Well I am currently thinking of the ideas.(Will put my ideation here when I get it)

OK, after going through some refrences and researches (on the next post), I get an idea already. To makes things easier, I will post the idea togather with the statement and explaination.

An unknown error has occur

Bad news... I save my picture as .ai file, it takes long time to save. And when I want to load it in the next reboot of my computer, an unknow error occur!

My picture cannot be loaded! (TmT) So, I tried to open another picture which I saved as back up. But it is no use... So, I search for the solution on the net and I found out that it is most properly the corrupted prefernces file or my laptop run out of virtual memory (which is impossible).

Even I reinstall the application, nothing changed... So, the final solution for me to summit the .ai file is by open the .jpeg file which I saved for web and save it again as .ai file.
(Below is all the pictures used for the 2nd assigment.) The one I high-light is the new .ai file.

After loading it, the layer I made was gone and remain as 1 layer only.... well I have to summit this .ai if no solution is to be found... If anyone has any solution please post your suggestions.

Description:
Phew, this sure takes a lot of hard work, especially to draw the out line of the sketches. So, I hope no one will copy this idea. Warning: (Any copying or similar illustration may result in the students getting an automatic "0" mark. NO PLAGERISM) ...®

Summary for tools used:

Pen tool: To draw line in any direction and to create any irregular shape.
Live paint bucket: To fill in particular colour/gradient in a selected area.
Selection tool: To select a patch for multi pupose such as resize, copy, move and grouping and much more.
Direct selection tool: To select a small edge or dot in a patch for editing the shape.
Brushes: To draw line and to create shape.
Gradient tool: To set the colour differences in a selected patch.

What I had learned:

To use layer and patches (including grouping) to arrange the picture.
To use pen tool in a better way instead of just joining dot to dot. For example to make curve and to join 2 difference patches.

The Process.

1. First of all, I open my sketches (.bmp) in illustrator and resize it to a suitable size like below.

2. The next step will be using pen tool to draw the out line of the sketches. This takes me a lot of time and patient but I am happy with the outcome (the right side one). Also, I make the out line a bit thicker to make it clearer.

3. Next is to group them up and fill in the colour using live paint bucket. As some parts can't be filled in with colour, I have to edit the parts with pen tool (2nd picture).

4. After done coloring, it looks like this:

5. Its time to draw the leaves in 2nd layer. By using brush tool, the leaves are drawn dot by dot to make it looks more realistic.

6. Now I have to draw the background. As I said before, it is a forest. To start with, I create a new layer and move out the tree and move in the sketches (using selection tool) to draw the out line using pen tool.

7. After rearrange the layers and groups, it is time to colour again. Below is the out come. Tools used are brush tool, gradient and live paint bucket. [ (@0@) It is really not easy... ]

8. Almost there. I have enhanced the background and added outline to the leaves.

9. Finally, move in the tree and paste in my previous symbol.

10. So, the next post will be the final product of assigment 2.

I draw these during the computer graphic tutorial class. Surely I will not summit these as my assigment 2, but just try out with pen tool, brush tool and layer. I don't want to waste them also, so I post them here.

It is time to say 'sayonara' to assigment 1 and fowards to assigment 2 which I will have to illustrate a realistic/cartoon-style subject related to my topic of global warming. Since my topic is deforestation, I will illustrate a tree.

So my ideation for this assigment will be a tree with forest as background. There will be grass and a river to indicate a healthy and clean unpoluted senario.

I did a simple research on global warming and de-forestation before working on it. But failed to post it... Anyway, here are the new one which have some similarities to the research I did before:

1. ATMOSPHERIC ROLE OF FORESTS

Rainforests play the important role of locking up atmospheric carbon in their vegetation via photosynthesis.
The vegetation and soils of the world's forests contain about 125 percent of the carbon found in the atmosphere.
When forests are burned, degraded, or cleared, large amounts of carbon are released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide along with other greenhouse gases (nitrous oxide, methane, and other nitrogen oxides).
The burning of forests releases about two billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, or about 22 percent of anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide. (http://rainforests.mongabay.com/0907.htm)

2. Deforestation: The hidden cause of global warming

In the next 24 hours, deforestation will release as much CO2 into the atmosphere as 8 million people flying from London to New York.
Stopping the loggers is the fastest and cheapest solution to climate change.
According to the latest audited figures from 2003, two billion tons of CO2 enters the atmosphere every year from deforestation.

3. Deforestation causes global warming

Between 25 and 30 percent of the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere each year – 1.6 billion tonnes – is caused by deforestation.

Hi, I'm Lee Jian Siang. First of all, I apologise for not introducing myself at the 1st place, anyway I've not much to say about myself.
I'm a Malaysian from Selangor. My hobbies are drawing(30%), reading(20%), playing favourite games(30%), listen to music(15%) and others(5%). I do not talk much, usually I listen to people only...
8June2008 is the first day I came to a university named Multimedia University (MMU), and I am taking foundation of creative multimedia (FCM). (There are lots of works to do in this faculty....T^T)

Whatever, this is my 1st blog. Thought I have not much experiences, I will do the best.

The process of making the symbol.

The symbol is design via Adobe Illustrator CS 2.

The steps:
1. I draw 2 circles using elipise tool.

2. Then using paintbrush tool, I draw the shape of the tree.

3. I combine the tree and circles together, using selection tool.But the lines seem to overlap each other at the center of the tree. So, I use scissors tool to cut out the line.

4.Using pencil tool, I draw the land of the earth. Also, I group them up so that it will be easier for me to select layer later.

5.The next step will be filling up the color using live paint bucket and eye dropper tool to pick up the color.

6. And it is done!

Total tools used:
1. Elipise tool : Used to created selected shape such as star, circle and rectangle.
2. Paintbrush tool : Used to draw line.
3. Selection tool : Used to select the part/parts of the drawing for editing or copy propose.
4. Scissors tool : Used to cut out the part which is not necessary in the drawing.
5. Pencil tool : Used to draw simple line.
6. Live paint bucket : Used to fill up the space in the drawing with colours.
7. Eye dropper tool : Used to pick up colour from the drawing.

Phew, finally I find the correct way to upload picture from illustrator.

Anyway, this is a symblo idicating the important of trees in reducing the effect of global warming.

Ok, now I'll describe it in more details:

1. The shape:
This symbol is made up of 3 main shapes.

The tree means trees on this earth.

The earth means Earth, nothing else.

The outer circle means atmosphere.

2. The arrangement:

The tree on the top of Earth means tree is actually very important to Earth. After all, it cover almost 30% of the land. (http://www.earth-policy.org/Indicators/Forest/2006.htm)

The root of the tree covering part of the Earth mean trees are protecting the earth as its can reduce the rate of global warming, however, human's activities are causing the area of trees to be reduced. "Though extensive, the world’s forests have shrunk by some 40 percent since agriculture began 11,000 years ago. " (http://www.earth-policy.org/Indicators/Forest/2006.htm)

The atmosphere means the present of trees can purify the air and reduce the effect of global warming.

3. The colors:

Green tree = Trees as a part of nature which has its own duty on Earth.

Red Earth = The growth of global warming on Earth is going fast, the Earth is hot.

Orange land = The soil dries up and shows no sign of livings.

Prediot atmosphere = The changes of climate due to global warming.
