Processing Feature Requests

I mentioned that we treat features differently from bug fixes. Here’s a “Getting Things Done” (GTD) style workflow for how we process new work requests that come in either internally or via customers:

Bug fixes either get fixed and deployed immediately or they go on our task board. All features requests end up on our Kanban board where they are then processed using a 4-stage iteration process that I’ll walk through next:

Ninety-percent of Silicon Valley's start-ups fail not because of faulty product, but because they don't tap the right market and they don't know their customer.

Wed, 08 Sep 2010 16:47:00 -0700 Lean Start-Ups Aim to Find Customers Quickly - NYTimes.com http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ChrisScratchpad/~3/7NAhV-WGheA/lean-start-ups-aim-to-find-customers-quickly http://mylescrew.posterous.com/lean-start-ups-aim-to-find-customers-quickly

“The agile practices have to be adapted, shifting the focus somewhat from generating stuff to learning about what customers will want. Most technology start-ups fail not because the technology doesn’t work, but because they are making something that there is not a real market for.”

So the lean playbook advises quick development of a “minimum viable product,” designed with the smallest set of features that will please some group of customers. Then, the start-up should continually experiment by tweaking its offering, seeing how the market responds and changing the product accordingly.

The goal, explains Mr. Blank, is to accelerate the pace of learning. “A start-up is a temporary organization designed to discover a profitable, scalable business model,” he says.

I'm a huge fan of rapid prototypes and iteration with a tight user feedback loop. I think it's especially critical for business focused (vs technical) entrepreneurs who would require outsourced resources to build the product. Most of my innovation has come during the implementation/hacking phase of the project when all the theories and ideas are put to a real test.

I'm also a fan of training new users/early adopters (using real developers/solutions architects) on your tools/process to test your intentions. The sooner the better .. there is always new insight to be gained from testing and feedback.

I've never utilized the formal lean startup process but I've implemented something similar. Does anyone have any recent feedback on the process? What works best for your team?

Fri, 05 Mar 2010 11:30:00 -0800 Google Buzz - no Share Button? http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ChrisScratchpad/~3/pRKXd6vebxc/google-buzz-no-share-button http://mylescrew.posterous.com/google-buzz-no-share-button

I've been banging on Buzz for the last three weeks and one thing is very clear.. it was released too early.  The most obvious missing feature is a Share button which would allow me to share content I find valuable with all my followers. I can't think of a single social network that doesn't have a Share (or RT) feature.

Google's answer to share is @replies (a twitter term)

@replies: Write @ in front of someone's username as a way of directing your buzz at that person (it will automatically go to their inbox). You can only use @replies with people who are in your contacts, and other followers won't be able to see the Gmail username.

This allows me to forward content to specific individuals but not everyone.

These are my suggestions.. And a test of buzz email to posterous (which looks good).

You can find me also find me on Buzz , it's mostly about Buzz issues (for now).

Feb 21 Chris Myles: Sharing Buzz Options ( Buzz to my followers )

I'm very surprised Buzz does not come with a native share button out of the box.

note: I've attempted to use terms that are tool independent.

Share Link

This post is a cleanly linked example used for sharing buzz with your followers (see link added via insert link ).

The Buzz link should open directly within Buzz so followers could join the conversation (at the source) or add comments to this Buzz for "local discussion". This is similar to friendfeed share but often causes fragmented conversations. The FF disable comments would be used to prevent that but non-FF users (if embedded on blog) had to be trained to click on the via link. This Buzz method is cleaner and will become even clearer once the Buzz titles become more descriptive (yes?).

Forward Buzz ( new functionality )

This would be a share button that functioned like @-replies but used the contact groups (and allowed all followers) to forward Buzz and it would not duplicate content (or lead to fragmented conversations). This function would allow you to share/"forward" good content/conversations to selected or all followers (private or public).

Additional thoughts

This topic originally appeared on DeWitts Creative Commons post (see link). Instead of forwarding a link, the entire Buzz post could be copied here but that could cause attribution issues (via link) and could be difficult when Buzz contains specific user content in addition to the article text (like Reader share with Note).

Any solution should consider the following:

[1] Allow the option to include all followers (@-replies is too restrictive). We follow people because they share interesting content, Buzz should be considered. I can't @-reply each and every one of my followers.

[2] The visual representation, existing usage models and the underlying data model via existing or upcoming standards.

[3] The overall appearance in blog post comments (via salmon). Salmon will need controls and options, there is no way I want all this (including @-replies) jumbled on my Blog comments. I don't think the "main stream" user would join the conversation.

[4] A method for finding existing conversations via URL in Buzz. In most cases I would rather join an existing conversation than start a new one. friendfeed had a utility call ffcheck which returned links to all the conversations including comment and like counts. Obviously all connected sites could not be covered but share points (Reader, bookmarklet, etc) should have the option to check.

Question: Would the share link method (described above) allow comments to flow back to the blog post (via Salmon)? Would comments on this post, flow to DeWitt's post and then onto the blog if his post was actually shared via a connected site?

Why not call it rebuzz ?

Rebuzz is too much like twitter retweet. Friendfeed, facebook and Google reader all call it share because that's what you are doing.. In fact I think the whole @-reply thing will be confusing to non-twitter users.. yes it can be used to reply but also to send/forward.

I can't explain @-reply to my 72 year old dad or 8 year old niece.. but everyone understands sharing. @mention has also been suggested but that doesn't suggest action just reference (like @Chris Myles is an @$#hole) will forward the messge to me instead of simply mentioning me.

@-replies also have issues wrt Search http://www.google.com/buzz/115067876375080098238/CmxJQ4oJLEJ/FYI-Dont-use-in-the-Buzz-search-box-Oops-the.

Feb 22 Maxim Vasiliev: i agree with need of "share" like in reader - the post is not copied but just hardlinked to followers feeds, with all comments and attributions.

i couldn't find "productideas" for buzz, and submitted this into "suggest new ideas" in help page for gmail.

a solution to do not "overshare" buzz to dads and moms could be group-sharing, using personal groups of contacts, these already exist in googlecontacts, and thus - in gmail and buzz.
Feb 22 Chris Myles: Maxim, the moderator link for Buzz is here http://www.google.com/moderator/#15/e=4cd8&t=4cd8.40&q=4cd8.1d71f. Please note that it is unofficial although the Buzz team is monitoring it.

I also think the group-sharing method (via private group Forward Buzz_) would allow new users to get comfortable discussing ideas behind closed doors (private) before taking them into the wild. It _might raise the quality of the discussions for everyone!
Feb 22 Maxim Vasiliev: oh. thanks. i missed the moderator stuff. is it announced somewhere?
Feb 22 Chris Myles: @DeWitt Clinton posted the Buzz support links http://www.google.com/buzz/117377434815709898403/KLh9owvdmvy/Q-How-do-I-send-feedback-or-ask-questions-about and Chris Messina added the unofficial link in the comments.

In addition a @Google Buzz Team profile was just added on Friday night but they haven't been "out in the wild" commenting on posts so it's really difficult to figure out what is broken vs fixed vs known issues etc. Hopefully the Buzz Team profile will help keep users up-to-date. I have received comments from various Google employees, some are experts .. others are just learning Buzz.

I hope you have better luck getting responses in the help forums than I have.
2:15 pm Chris Myles: The Buzz team has released their own moderator version as http://productideas.appspot.com/#16/e=4a51a The problem with the moderator implementation is that nobody can add comments to clarify issues or detail work-arounds.

WordPress.com allows you to geotag your user profile and posts. That means you can assign an earthly location to your account and to each of your posts.

WordPress.com will soon launch a Geo Search feature that will allow people to find your posts based on their locations. To show up in the search results, you need to turn geotagging on and start geotagging your posts.

I've investigated a lot of machine readable geo formats and Wordpress did a VERY thorough job.. it generates a georss feed (two formats), has an in post geo microformat, and both geo.format and ICBM meta formats on post pages. Now all they need is text based geo format (both lat/lng and geocoding) for emails from non gps phones (like we used for our trip). Currently it relies on geotagged photos from a mobile phone (like posterous).

No free lunch
Did you ever wonder why almost all of Google’s services are free of charge? Well, now you know. That old saying, “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch,” still holds true. You may not be paying Google with dollars (aside from clicking on those Google ads), but you are paying with information. That doesn’t have to a bad thing, but you should be aware of it.

A good post about the type of data Google can (and is) gathering about your web habits through your usage of their tools. I actually don't have a problem with it and in some cases it can be very helpful, but users should be aware. You can use Google's Dashboard to see some of the information they have collected through your account.

You also have to wonder.. "what's next?". If you use the new mobile maps navigation will your driving data be mined to see which stores you pass each day on the way to work? Google mobile ads are already focused based on your location, will future ads be adapted based on where you drive? I'm torn.. on one hand IF I have to deal with ads I certainly want them to be relevant to be me. BUT at some point it all seems rather "big brother is watching" to me!!

As long as Google remains transparent about the data they are collecting from me I don't have as issue, the minute that changes I'm gone. I only hope there are still other options available when/if that happens.

Thu, 19 Nov 2009 14:30:00 -0800 Facebook Pages for Businesses: Really? http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ChrisScratchpad/~3/n-yMnf-jjQ4/facebook-pages-for-businesses-really http://mylescrew.posterous.com/facebook-pages-for-businesses-really

I've been playing around with a lot of social media data flows, trying to determine the best way to leverage company and community content across various social networks. Facebook has a huge following so I decided to play around with Facebook pages.

Facebook fan pages have the same look and feel of standard personal pages with a few slight differences. The biggest differences are in the accessibility

  • Fans can view your content on their wall, bi-directional friending is NOT necessary
  • Fan page data is publicly available and can be searched (even in google)
  • Standard Facebook applications won't always work on pages unless configured to do so
  • External applications (Picasa upload etc) usually won't work for pages

For businesses.. really?

Things don't really start to fall apart until you try to do things that .. a normal business would do.

Can't change fan page owner

Personnel change, people get reassigned, business get sold but Facebook doesn't allow you to change page owners.

[facebook page]
The discussion group for this topic is located here. There is no formal Facebook response!!

What if a business wanted to hire a consultant to help them set up the page or develop a complete drop-in social media flow? Just in case you thought to create a phantom account or business account read this..

[facebook page]

Can't change page type

Currently you can't change the category of your page which also determines what extra data you can enter about it. When I initial setup my page I choose business, but now website is available. My basic Info settings are: physical address, store hours and parking options .. and that's not really working for me. The only Facebook answer.. delete it and re-create it (losing all fans and efforts).

[facebook page]
The discussion group about this topic is located here (166 posts since June 2008).

Side effects for page owner

[facebook page]

Despite the statement above to the contrary, the line between page admin and your personal profile is NOT always clear.

When I comment on a fan's photo or like a fan's link, my personal account appears.

[facebook page]
Recently I commented on a fan post that appeared to be from my personal profile, while others appeared to be from the page (?!?)

Admins can't write on a page wall as a themselves, just as the page

Facebook says  that any post, comment or like made while the owner/admin is on the page will be seen as a response from the page (even though that isn't always the case). This also has a negative side effect; fan page interactions will not be seen on your personal page wall and only friends who are also fans of your page will see your comments. Facebook does NOT allow page admins to comment as their personal profile on a page they own.

Needless to say this makes including/introducing fan page material to your friends difficult. Friends who are also fans might get upset with the duplication.

Fb-pissed-off

I just want the option to choose Fan Page or Individual. The discussion group for this topic is located here. There is no formal Facebook response!!

Helping build Fan Pages

I'm not trying to be overly negative, I'm just trying to point out issues that I've encountered.. things that make you go hmmm (ttmygh)?!? I've thought of 100's of different applications that would benefit from a successful online presence and social media integration; small business, groups and/or communities.

While Facebook has it's place, it can't be the ONLY presence on the web, so integration with Facebook becomes a critical component. Most small businesses or groups are busy running their organizations and can't/won't take the time to explore and develop the optimal solution. These are just some of the issues I've discovered during my quest with Facebook.. (others here).

I would love to help bridge the gap between the organizations who could benefit from this integration and the companies that provide the tools. More issues will certainly appear and I'll try to document them on this blog. Hopefully the final optimized flow can be detailed on my "It's New to Me" blog.

How are others dealing with these issues? How do non-tech savy small organizations deal with these complexities?

Mon, 16 Nov 2009 13:45:00 -0800 Posterous Introduces Seamless Retweeting http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ChrisScratchpad/~3/vnoD7U9X-bg/posterous-introduces-seamless-retweeting-2 http://mylescrew.posterous.com/posterous-introduces-seamless-retweeting-2

I've just updated my various Posterous blog themes to support the new Retweet button. I originally used the Addthis share button to cover everything but there are SO many options that it takes a while to find the service you are looking for. I used the single share options landing page because Posterous doesn't support javascript (yet !!).

While I had the lid off I also added a facebook share as it's own external share button, I figure that most of my shares will come from a couple of sources. With the tight integration between Posterous and Facebook, I have a feeling the Facebook share (with share counts) will be included shortly.

I would LOVE to have post-summary (Read More) support in Posterous. While we were traveling we struggled with extremely long load times just to load/browse the latest content. As a general rule I try to put my "expensive" content after the fold to increase load performance. Forcing the reader to the post page also has a nice side benefit.. improved analytics.

I've tried to balance functionality with the clean look of Posterous in my theme designs. On my community blog I try to use [show more] links to keep the clean initial look, while allow allowing easy/direct access to the desirable content. I'd love some feedback on community blog theme and (non-post) content.. What's missing? What should be removed?

What do you think, is the tweet count really necessary? What (non feed based) services do you use to share content?

PS: I love the Posterous tagline "getting better every day".. it sure is!!

Update to the Update: Turns out you don't need to have autopost to twitter enabled, it was just a corner case bug which has already been fixed (gotta love great support). To use the retweet feature you will need to login to twitter via posterous (only once), so they can tweet on your behalf!!

Update: Looks like you need to have twitter autopost enabled to use this feature. I currently use friendfeed to post to twitter so I didn't have it enabled. I wonder why they can't just leave the RT @username off if twitter autopost isn't enabled. Maybe I should have guessed that I needed it enabled (retweet vs tweet), but I was able to set it all up on my blogs without the necessary info to make it fully work.. that's not dead simple!!

I was going to try and whip up my own but the post.ly url isn't available via the theme elements .. {CurrentPostlyURL} please!!

Sat, 14 Nov 2009 16:00:00 -0800 Posterous: Auto-embed sets and tags FROM Flickr http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ChrisScratchpad/~3/eH515cAatb0/mini-feature-auto-embed-flickr-sets-and-tags-1 http://mylescrew.posterous.com/mini-feature-auto-embed-flickr-sets-and-tags-1

Mini-feature: Auto-embed Flickr sets and tags

Hey guys... still got a bunch of bigger things in the pipe you'll hear about soon, but wanted to let you know that now you can easily embed Flickr sets and tags. Just paste the URL, e.g. from the address bar:

Today Posterous announced a Flickr set and tag embed, their first externally sourced image based solution.

I'm not a fan of emailing images to Posterous and then having them auto-posted in Flickr. The meta data isn't used for captions, the flickr caption of all images is set to the blog post title, and the result gives me two sets of photos to manage instead of one.

I've always felt that you should be able to master your data in the tool that is most optimized for the specific task. With this update Posterous has updated their traditional hub-spoke auto-post model to allow a bi-direction path, images in and/or out of Flickr.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Posterous comes up with next. This video gives some great hints.

FYI: You cannot use Flickr's email upload to add photos to a set, but you can use the tag subject line option ( tags: cute "black cat") to organize them (for viewing in Posterous). You can also set default tags on all email uploaded images but there is no way to set the order of images using the tag method (you can with sets). I'm a little surprised that I can't add my Flickr Photostream to Posterous and that the resulting feed doesn't include any link or image to give any indication that photos are available (just a blank hole).

...
We're also releasing a top-requested feature for our API today that makes it easy to retrieve all Sidewiki entries for an entire domain. With this addition, you can look for new entries created on any page of a website and also subscribe to them via RSS (such as this RSS feed for all Sidewiki entries on the Google Blog). See our Sidewiki API documentation for all of its details.

Entire Domain Sidewiki Feeds (finally)

When sidewiki was first released I was amazed that I couldn't monitor side wiki entries for all my pages in a single location. IF (big if) Google was developing Sidewiki to help me gather more valuable info for my sites, monitoring and moderation of comments are the most critical functions. Most of my pages already have a commenting solution, so I actually don't want people to be able to comment on the Sidewiki because I think it becomes too confusing.

Update: When specifying the feed URL, don't forget the trailing / (encoded to %2F) on your domain name and you might want to include the includeLessUseful=true to really get all the entries.

What is the scope of the comment?

I've had plenty of discussions about this with the Blogger and Google Friend Connect (GFC) teams about comment scope which has gotten me absolutely no where. Imagine you are reading a blog where the main page contains the latest N entries. If someone leaves a page comment about a specific post that happens to be on the main page, it won't make sense later when the post longer exists (on that page). That's why blogs have post comments!! I actually think overall site comments are important and that's why I've added them to a couple of my blogs and clearly marked them "Site Comments". GFC allows you to set the comment gadget scope to site or page but doesn't visually differentiate the two (again confusing). With Sidewiki the scope is the entire page (or selected text on the page).

Full URL issues

The Sidewiki uses the FULL page URL to scope the comments, which adds another layer of complexity. When I clicked on the blog post to check out the sidewiki entries, I did it from Google Reader, which came from feedburner, which had all the extra ?utm_source params. Well guess what? That's considered a different URL, so I get a different Sidewiki entry than if the parameters were removed (ah and some entries actually appeared). It's worse than that, if someone clicked the Blogger comments box (URL#comments) they'd get a different SideWiki too. Blogger's built in share appends additional a tracking parameter ?spref=xxx, and Blogger's Next Blog function appends ?expref=next-blog, even the javascript # .. ALL are treated as different Sidewikis for EXACTLY the same content!! ..Now do you understand why you need FULL domain entry monitoring and that "just check each url" WOULDN'T work?

Before you go suggesting that Sidewiki just strips the URL parameters, a lot of dynamic sites use those parameters to generate unique content per parameter set. #fail

An Opt Out Option Please

If I use Blogger, I have three commenting systems available to me; Blogger's own, GFC and Sidewiki. It's already painful enough to monitor/moderate two (especially since GFC doesn't have a notification service). An opt out option is important, otherwise the Sidewiki could turn into another unmoderated, spam riddled Google commenting system. I want an easy way to disable it!!

Actually I want an opt in option. Why should Google be allowed to drop another commenting system on my content without my permission? If the examples above are any indication, it will only be confusing to everyone; contributors, readers and page owners.

Hey Google, Comments Are Social

I must say that I am slightly confused with Google's Social stategy with respect to comments. There's Google Friend Connect, Blogger, Google Reader, Google Sidewiki, and Google social search (Orkut too). Both GFC and Google Reader have closed commenting systems and Sidewiki isn't integrated into existing Google solutions (when it could/should).

GFC seems to be Google's modern version of a commenting system but some very basic features are missing or broken; follow on notification, a central dashboard for all MY comments (on all sites) and moderation (currently broken and confusing). When a link is saved, it points to the page and not my specific comment, so I first need to find the gadget and then find my comment .. just to see if someone has replied. uggh!! My own activity stream disappears after 13 days, so I can't even use it to monitor my comments.

Most of my non-geek friends don't generate a lot of content (blogs, tweets ect), but I would be very interested in what they had to say (in their comments) about the websites they visit and blog posts they read. Will comments ever be considered as part of Google Social search?

I would love a central place where I could browse and search comments from my social graph and monitor discussions about my content.

What are your thoughts on the sidewiki updates? Or Google's Social strategy?

Fri, 13 Nov 2009 05:46:00 -0800 Yahoo Groups - Your Comment is Too Long http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ChrisScratchpad/~3/puRmkMrUxTo/yahoo-groups-your-comment-is-too-long http://mylescrew.posterous.com/yahoo-groups-your-comment-is-too-long

Maybe I'm getting a little old and grumpy, but sometimes I find it amazing how poorly designed some Web interfaces are. I don't consider myself an expert on design but I have helped 100's of non-computer savvy users and I know what hangs them up or frustrates them.

I found a yahoo group I wanted to join and was asked to supply a comment to the owner (200 character max). As I was typing I was surprised that I wasn't given a running count .. hmm ok maybe they'll warn me later. I clicked submit and got please correct your errors..

Yahoo-toolong

And my toggle buttons selection were reset (to the defaults). It didn't even tell me how many characters I HAD.. if they know there are too many they MUST have calculated how many I had so just tell me.

Anyway this went on for a couple/three submit cycles before I finally ended under the 200 character limit. I felt like I was playing a bad guessing game instead of trying to get something accomplished!!  I don't master content in twitter so I'm not even 140 character aware yet.

I understand that Yahoo groups is probably in maintenance mode, and obviously Yahoo groups has a following.. It made me realize one thing; it doesn't matter how well something worked in the past, you've got to keep up with the latest and greatest if you want to survive.

Posterous is a perfect example.. there are already plenty of blogging platforms that cover X% of the population, but if you make something dead simple via a mechanism everyone else can understand (email), you'll gain market share. Blogger had it's place in my life and I made it work for me, but my new Blogs are created in Posterous and it feels like a breath of fresh air!!

Wed, 11 Nov 2009 12:01:16 -0800 Will the new friendfeed facebook change be too noisy? http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ChrisScratchpad/~3/THIVdVg0UCw/will-the-new-friendfeed-facebook-change-be-to http://mylescrew.posterous.com/will-the-new-friendfeed-facebook-change-be-to I just noticed that the way my friendfeed content gets displayed in facebook has changed. Instead of just a simple activity message displayed under RECENT ACTIVITY I get a full blown status update to my friends in addition to a post to my Wall.

Ff-fb-changes

Most of my friends have no real idea that I am a closet geek.. they might have wondered but this will surely solidify my geekness. I recently started sharing even more content by adding my Google Reader shared items and my new posterous blogs to my friendfeed bounty. Don't get me wrong, I love it and I've found it increadibly valuable.. I guess I'm just over sensitive to the noise I generate, especially to those that aren't familiar with firehoses!!

I think I'll disable the wall updates and make sure people know that all my geekness (if interesting) is still available under the friendfeed tab.

Note: If anyone knows of a way I can tag or filter my friendfeed content (that goes to my friends) please let me know (in the comments).

What do you think? Are most of your facebook friends already firehose junkies?

Tue, 10 Nov 2009 13:19:00 -0800 Sharing content to FaceBook Fan Pages: Why is it so difficult? http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ChrisScratchpad/~3/-ZQmcWU3uBQ/sharing-content-to-facebook-fan-pages-why-is http://mylescrew.posterous.com/sharing-content-to-facebook-fan-pages-why-is

You would think that Facebook would want to make it easy to add content to a Facebook fan pages. I can understand the "Walled Garden" approach on personal pages because the private/symmetric friendship required to view content is what users want and expect, but Fan pages are open!!

FBML language is a pain in the @$#. First I have to add a FBML box, add my markup and then publish it.. there isn't even a preview mode. When I'm viewing my "boxes" page I can't even edit the content of the box, I can only move it to the wall tab or remove it.. what about actually editting it? Most of the common embedding methods (javascript and iframe/embeds) won't work.. so you have to find an app, try it, figure out the various non-standardized parameters and work around the bugs. The easiest integration I've found is FriendFeed, I use the image version of the feed widget.. which works everywhere AND it updates too!!

Allow access?

Facebook has a Calendar but I already use Google Calendar so I don't want to manage another one. I found an app that does an OK job of viewing the content BUT anyone who wants to view the calendar has to allow access.. why?  I just want my "fans" to be able to view the calendar (like on any other webpage).

Fb-why

Currently you can add only a single Note feed to Facebook, which can be limiting. Sure yahoo pipes and other aggregators could be used but my goal isn't to duplicate my entire web content within Facebook.

The Future

From what I understand the “Open Graph API” will change all this. It will allow any web page to have Fan features that will allow users to subscribe by becoming fans, and receive information on their Facebook newsfeeds that could be seen by their friends. I can understand how large brands can afford to market their content on Facebook, I hope future features will allow small businesses to benefit from the Facebook community with minimal integration effort.
