Facebook has made a couple recent changes related to page cover photos (the big photo at the top of your Facebook page). And both of them increase the importance of your cover photo.

When a friend of yours likes a page, you’ll see that page’s cover photo show up in your news feed, like this:

Here’s what you used to see:

Facebook has also relaxed the rules on cover photos. See all of Facebook’s page guidelines.

The old rules said that covers may not include:

Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it on socialmusic.com”;

Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section;

References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features; or

Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends.”

The new rules seem to allow all of that:

“All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can’t be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else’s copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines. Covers may not include images with more than 20% text.”

So you can now treat your cover photo as more of an advertisement.

By now, we all understand that when you post something on Facebook, it will only be seen by a fraction of your friends. For more on why, read about Facebook Edgerank.

But did you know that you can pay $7 so that more of your friend see your content? Facebook calls this a promoted post. To activate, just click on “Promote” under one of your posts.

Here’s what Facebook says will happen.

Not something I would normally do, but since I’m selling my house I gave it a try. Notice that Facebook now list my post as “sponsored” (trust me, that’s what the arrow is pointing to).

What I wasn’t sure about was if I would get any analytics from Facebook, but two days after paying the $7, I did. Here’s what Facebook shows me:

So I don’t get actual numbers, but I do see that my post was viewed nearly twice as much.

Was it worth $7? Not sure. But if my house sells quickly, I would have gladly paid $8!

Crowdbooster tells me - at a glance - which of my Tweets and Facebook page posts are getting engagement and which are not.

I’m <del>cheap</del> frugal.

I don’t like to pay for social media tools if I can find one for free. But there is one social media tool I’ve decided to shell out $8/month to use: Crowdbooster.

Crowdbooster tells me – at a glance – which of my Tweets and Facebook page posts are getting engagement and which are not. Here’s a screengrab from the Crowdbooster dashboard:

The higher the circle, the farther the post has reached. The farther to the right the most people who are talking about it. The bigger the circle, the more engaged users. Very useful stuff.

Here’s a screengrab from a Twitter account:

This time, it’s looking at impressions, retweets and replies.

I also love Crowdbooster’s recomending when I should tweet, suggesting people I should engage with and reminding me when I forget to respond to someone.

And the weekly email gives me a quick snapshot of how I’m doing overall:

Are there social media tools that you’re willing to pay for?
