Maybelline Lasting Drama gel eyeliner | Review

This post was written back in 2016 and since then I've used up this product as much as I could. I also remembered it had dried up by the start of 2017, hence the lack of swatches in this post. I haven't been much into wearing gel eyeliner unless it's a pencil, so I haven't repurchased the item to swatch it. If you don't mind any of this, you can continue to the review.

Remember when I started wearing eyeliner back in 2011? I was so into the e.l.f. studio gel eyeliner. Somewhere along the line, I’ve fallen off from gel eyeliners, trying to find the perfect liquid eyeliner to get a cat eye, or using pencil versions. Too often I’ve bypassed this Maybelline gel eye liner in stores and wondered how well it worked.

The Maybelline Lasting Drama gel eyeliner is a smooth, highly pigmented liner product, which makes it ridiculously easily to make the perfect winged liner, even with the brush provided. I was truly shocked by the ease at which the gel liner glided onto my eyes, and the simplest flick at the ends gave a to-die-for cat eye. This product was $20BDS in a beauty supply store, but I’m certain that Collin’s Pharmacy has it cheaper. The only problem may be availability since I can see why this flies off the shelf!

This product claims to be smudge-proof as well, and although I love how easy it is to apply, I’d have to say they’re lying about that. Even after I have left the product to set on its own for more than an hour, I’ve realised that touching the liner will take some product off. I have my doubts about rubbing my eye while wearing this gel eyeliner, because I may end up looking like a racoon.

On the plus side, I’ve tried this very near to my waterline and my eyes do not react badly to it, i.e. running water like a burst pipe. In terms of being waterproof, I have to do more testing, as I didn’t want to look like a goon at the beach if this happened to fail. But in Barbados’ humidity, it lasts! All day… and night too!

I can see this product lasting me while because a little goes a long way, nevermind that the pot looks so tiny. A mere 3g of product fits in this glass jar. But at least the packaging is concise. The cap locks off tightly to prevent the gel liner from drying out.

I would suggest, as Maybelline did, to clean your brush after every use because this gel eyeliner is no joke when it dries. It will stick to your brush’s bristles and stiffen them for the next use.

I could live on this gel eyeliner, and I really wonder why I hadn’t tried it earlier. It’s a big step up from the e.l.f. Studio cream liner, so if you liked that, you’ll love this! I’d say set this gel eyeliner with a powder eyeshadow of a similar colour though. Just to make sure the product ain’t going anywhere.

5 Simple Steps for growing your Skin Care routine in your Twenties

You know way back in secondary school (high school for our international readers) when you were going through puberty and your whole body changed? I remember lots of people I know having struggles with Acne, always trying different products to control some crazy breakouts. I remember thinking I was pretty lucky to not have that stress. But more recently, I've concluded that I might have just been a late bloomer. Or maybe it's just the stress of getting older. Either way, in your twenties it's important to build a skincare regime that is able to control acne, keep your skin moist and well protected.

Cleanse!

Dependent on your skin type, the kind of cleanser you use will vary. Maybe you use a cream cleanser although you have oily skin, or an exfoliating cleanser while you have dry skin, and that's perfectly ok once you remember not to over-cleanse. If it feels too squeaky clean or dry after you have washed your face, then you are probably using the wrong cleanser for you. Remember the skin produces its own oils to protect it and we shouldn't strip it completely away with washing.
On a similar note, remember less is more. There is no need to wash your face 4 or 5 times a day, especially multiple washes each time. Again you are stripping away all the oils that keep your skin looking supple.

My favourite cleanser of the moment is the Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash Grapefruit cleanser. It has 2% salicylic acid to battle any acne and does not strip my normal-type skin. I also enjoy using a micellar water to cleanse off my makeup or just for everyday cleansing, because it doesn't leave my skin feeling dry and is super easy to use. If your skin is sensitive you can try out micellar water (blog post coming on my comparisons) or the multipurpose Philosophy Purity Made Simple cleanser, which is especially good for dry skin. 😍😍

Exfoliate!

While I used to be an advocate for physical exfoliators like St.Ives Apricot scrub and other cleansers containing microbeads, I've found they have been less and less effective for my skin. Sometimes it appears as though I am breaking out more while using them. I've moved to using gentle chemical exfoliants such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid and lactic acid which gently remove dead skin cells. I use the Ren Skincare Glycol-Lactic renewal mask to brighten my skin when it's looking really dull, but on a daily basis, my Neutrogena cleanser, pairing it with a silicone face brush.
Again like with cleansing, don't over-exfoliate, it'll make your skin care routine more troublesome.

Tone!

Lot's of people seem to omit this step, but since I started updating my skincare and including this, I must say, my skin feels a lot smoother and supple. After trying a sample of the SebaMed Gentle toner, I had to buy the full size. It contains witch hazel, hyaluronic acid and silk proteins and is said to have a pH of 5.5. I love how it replenishes my skin after I've cleansed. Now, this step is not always necessary, but it is definitely something you could try.

Moisturise!

I have a long time struggle with moisturisers and sunscreen. This is an essential step, regardless of your skin type. There's this misconception that persons with oily skin should not use moisturiser, but it's quite the opposite. For me, although my skin type is normal I have the hardest time finding a moisturiser that doesn't clog my pores in this Barbados heat. So far I've really enjoyed gel-cream moisturisers, but the best ones are usually quite expensive. I've also enjoyed using the Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre (milk cream concentrate), Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel, and currently, the Bioderma Intensive Baume which is actually for atopic skin I'm yet to see how the Bioderma performs when it gets even warmer.

I also have been looking into eye creams, but those are hella expensive. However, this is understandable because the eyes are a very delicate area, and there has been extensive research into the technologies used in eye creams. Really it can be quite difficult to choose an eye cream dependent on the price and the concerns you want to address. I recently came across a list of the best eye creams and look forward to trying a few when I travel, as many of these aren't available on island, but for the mean time, I use coconut oil (the oil of wonders) and that seems to be working to keep the wrinkles and dryness at bay.

Sun protection!

Although I know this step is important in preventing skin cancer, sun spots, darkening of spots and premature ageing, it's my most disliked step. Why? Because I'm yet to find a face sunscreen that doesn't make me feel like an oil-slick. What I have been doing is wearing foundation with SPF in hopes that it would protect my skin, but I still continue the hunt for the perfect sunscreen. European Holiday and blogging updates!

Hey all! It's always too long between my posts, and I really have to apologise for that. Let's just say I've been out living this summer, trying not to be too tethered to my devices. I will have to improve my time management skills for working, posting videos and blogging again. Anyhow, I wanted to share a couple videos from my recent vacation with you guys.

I'm so sad that summer vacation is almost over. But I did have a long time for fun and recuperation. We all have to get back to the daily grind now!

I hope that you have all enjoyed your summer as well. Let me know what was the most exciting thing you did for this vacation. For me, that was visiting Europe. It was an amazing and eye-opening experience.

I have lots more videos coming since I did a lot of recording when I got back to Bimshire. Just have to edit them and post for you lovelies. Also, look out for more development coming to both this blog and my YouTube channel very soon. Different content from what you're used to!

June Beauty Favourites! | Throwback post

Sooo.... I was browsing through my drafted posts, thinking about what I'd update the blog with and I came across this post that I had wrote last year (2015). I'll also be posting a more recent favourites post for this June, and it's quite interesting to see the differences between years. Anyway, let's get into it. (My apologies about the photos, since I no longer have many of these products, or didn't get around to taking the photos some time ago. But I used retail photos for most of them.)

It's been too long since I've done a favourites post here on the blog. If I find a combination of products that works, I hardly stray from them. Truthfully, I meant to post these products since April (haha), but since they've mostly remained the same, why not share!

Skincare:

Eucerin Dermopurifyer Cleanser & Scrublet
This combination works well to keep my breakouts under control. The dermopurifyer foams well and cleans gently, while also being fragrance-free. Coupled with the Scrublet (from L'Oreal), which I use for gentle exfoliation, this is a very effective combination for everyday use.

Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub

Sometimes you need deeper exfoliation and really need to cleanse those pores, so I like the Biore Unclogging Scrub to give me that. It's not as abrasive as the St. Ive's Apricot scrubs, but the sad thing is that the spherical beads may be the ones which take too long to biodegrade. I'm on the look out for a scrub that has more environmentally-friendly exfoliants, but nothing too rough to cut me.

The BodyShop Tea Tree Blemish Fade Night Lotion

I would use this morning and night to keep my skin clear since tea tree oil is naturally antibacterial and antifungal. Although the concentration is a lot lower than using the pure oil, it seems to work very well on pimples. I love that it dries matte as well!

Hair care:

Vital Olive Oil Hair Mayonnaise
I love this hair mayonnaise because it leaves my hair feeling very moisturised and seems to have a lot of great ingredients (including olive pieces within the mix). I get this in the same box as my hair relaxer, and I just haven't needed to buy the full-sized product since they give you more than enough for one or more uses in the kit. In the touch-up kit however, you get those plastic packets.

Design Essentials Vitamin Restore

Prior to relaxing, I put this on my ends to help with protecting them from relaxer overlap and run off. Especially now that my hair is dyed and bleached, it helps my hair not to get cut right off by the relaxer. I also use this for deep conditioning and it for one smells great and is great for preventing (or fixing) breakage. I definitely need to use it more often though, especially since I need to be taking better care of the coloured hair.

Dr.Miracle's Leave-in Conditioner

This is a good everyday moisturiser. I hauled my 2nd bottle of this back in April, and it still has been doing wonders for my hair. I have to make sure I maintain my moisture-protein balance otherwise I end up with spaghetti or straw- hair. This product contains both moisturising ingredients such as honey, sweet almond oil, olive oil, jojoba oil and coconut oil, while still having protein in the form of hydrolysed silk, hydrolysed keratin, hydrolysed wheat protein and hydrolysed milk protein.
My hair feels rather silky after using this product.

Design Essentials Sleek Edge Control
I have kinky, unruly edges. and for years they just would stick out and do whatever they felt like. A friend of mine told me about edge control about a year or 2 ago and I decided to try one, but had no luck because I thought I would need maximum hold and the gel was WAY too hard to even use. Enter Design Essentials. I was first drawn to them because of their sleek packaging and then the smell. I love this product! It works, at least for a few hours and makes my edges feel moisturised, and they make little cute curls, although they're never completely sleek for a whole day. This is still a vast improvement from no edge control and my first try with edge control, haha.

Makeup:

Maybelline FIT ME Matte & Poreless Foundation- Toffee Caramel 330

After my first impression video, I started wearing this to work (and there's no air conditioning) but it still looked pretty good by the end of the day. I could blot with an oil sheet, as I don't walk around with powders,and it would look nice again. It does wear off during the day, but it isn't hideous, nor does it sink into wrinkles or make you look old. The colour match in person was good too.

Milani Color Statement Moisture Matte lipstick - Matte Orchid
This lip colour now lives in my bag and can brighten up any makeup look that may be bland. Furthermore I just put this regardless of if I'm wearing other face makeup. It can be worn full pigmentation, or sheered of with lip balm to give a nice stain to the lips. I really like the colour and it was very affordable too, being around $10-12BDS. Although it's supposed to be matte, it's not as matte or drying as a MAC lipstick, and I'd describe it as more of a creme finish.

Milani Easybrow Automatic pencil - Natural Taupe
Since I changed to a lighter hair colour, I found that darker brows looked meaner and so I switched to this very affordable, yet useful brow pencil from Milani. It's just $10BDS, yay! It's waxy enough to keep the brows tamed, yet has just enough colour to tint my brows lighter. I do wish is that it was a little less creamy so that the pencil would keep a pointy shape for more precision. On another sad note, I can only get this to last about a month :(.

It'sJudyTime palette by BH Cosmetics

This has been my go-to palette this year. You can do everyday neutral eye looks and some times a pop of colour using this palette. AND even without a primer the colours are vibrant and stay all day! I'm so glad I got this.

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

This sponge is the bomb! (Thanks Sam!) I can apply liquid foundation with it, powder even blush if I wanted to, and everything looks so flawless and well-blended. This is not half as expensive as the Beauty Blender, but I think it does a great job and is soft. However, I need to be more gentle with mine, especially when it comes to washing it, as the sponge can't take as much a scrubbing as I expected. (I really like to make sure I get out all of the foundation stains.)

#throwbackpost It’s Judy Time Palette | Swatches & Review

In 2012 I started watching ItsJudysLife vlogs and eventually I fell in love with her makeup channel and her First impression reviews. So when she came out with the It’s Judy Time palette with BH Cosmetics, I was totally fan-girling over it. However when it first came out, I was just a broke student haha, so I couldn't purchase it then. After some time BH cosmetics had some sales on this palette (as well as others) and I decided last December to finally get it at a 2 –for-1 deal (I got my bff one for Christmas). What sold me was the colours and versatility as well as the fact that it was going to be “gone” after December 2014. SO… was it worth the hype?

Heck yah! I make an effort to wear this palette everyday to work because the shades are so flattering and easy to use. I’ve tried it with my fingers, brushes, with primer, without primer and I’ve always impressed by the results!

This palette consists of 12 unnamed eye shadows, ranging from matte, to satin, to shimmer shades. I feel this is a very universal palette as the colour selection goes from warm neutrals to cooler jewel-toned purples and a blue for a pop of colour. I was surprised by the neutral matte shades because they actually worked with my skin tone and did not come off chalky. Not even the palest beige shade. These colours are very velvetty!

On the upper right, there are 3 perfect shades for the crease or as a transition colour, depending on your skin tone. You can even use these as brow shades which I’ve done on occasion since 2 out of the 3 are matte. On the upper left, the light shades make for great highlight colours and are also matte, which I truly enjoy!

The bottom row is full of rich shimmers and satins that spice up any simple makeup look you may create with the top row. Making this one of the most affordable and versatile palettes for day-to- night wear.

Top Row (left to right):

Warm beige (matte)
Cappuccino brown (satin/matte) honestly I can’t tell, it’s that buttery.
Golden brown (shimmer) Very fine shimmer unlike other shimmery colours.
Warm medium brown (matte)

Periwinkle (satin) I’m not huge fan of this shade, I think it’s a little too pale and cool-toned for me.
Rich cobalt blue (satin) very pretty in the pan, but subtle on the lids.One would need to build up this colour.

I think the neutral selection is very good, as well as their pigmentation. When it comes to the brighter colours, it’s a little hit or miss. But then again, this isn’t supposed to be a bright, “popping’'” eye shadow palette either, from what Judy discussed in the reveal. If you live for bright colours, go for an Urban Decay, SugarPill, or the bargain options from BHCosmetics. But if you’re working at a school or more conservative office, then this is a great go-to palette.

Eucerin Dermopurifyer Cleanser | Review

You may have seen me talk about this product in a haul video back in April, and how I was my second bottle of this miracle product. I've been using the Eucerin Dermopurifyer cleanser from since October last year, and the three best things about it are that it's affordable, gentle yet keeps breakouts at bay. The not so great thing about it is the misleading marketing garb.

Now as I've already said, this cleanser works to keep my skin clean and mostly free of acne breakouts. It doesn't dry my skin out or leave it with that tight feeling some more harsh acne cleansers do. I tend to use the Dermopurifyer with my L'Oreal Scrublet which gives a good gentle exfoliation, and I've even used this product to clean my Real Techniques Blending sponge for daily use.

The Dermopurifyer is a colourless,fragrance-free gel which produces a lot of suds and effectively cleanses off my daily makeup as well. I also use this in the morning, unless I choose to switch it up with the Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub. Eucerin has prided themselves in making a product without fragrance and soap. But...here's where I got a bit confused.

When I first purchased this product and up to the point of the haul in April, the use of the term "ampho-tensides" on the bottle made this seem "revolutionary". Not that I only purchase based on marketing labels on products, but it honestly made me very curious. At first, trying to be smart with my knowledge of Chemistry, I assumed this was the small amount of salicylic acid contained in its formula, but at the same time, I was conflicted by the term and other ingredients since ampho- (more specifically amphoteric) refers to a substance that can be both positively- and negatively-charged or can react with acids AND bases. Salicylic acid is definitely not amphoteric. (It reacts with bases or negatively charged ions.)

In researching this mysterious "ampho-tenside" further, I found abstracts of medical journals, but no real information about it. Until I broke apart the word and realised this fancy "ampho-tenside" was simply referring to detergent (surfactants).

I'm absolutely picky about my skincare products, especially one which is affordable and works, but they call this a "soap-free" formula and instead have replaced soap with detergent. I'm not sure if that's necessarily for the better. Sodium Cocoamphoacetate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate are the detergents Eucerin uses in this product. In their defence, it's primarily Sodium Cocoamphoacetate which is coconut oil-derived, and if you have irritation with SLS you may be okay using this product since there are lower concentrations than most cleansers.

Reflections on 2015

Seasons greetings to all! I hope that you've had a great Christmas season!

I just wanted to pop in and share a couple videos I recorded in December. Yes, I finally am recording again! YAY! I am going to definitely keep this up *crosses fingers*.

Thank you for all of your support in 2015, despite me being M.I.A. a number of times, shame on me. But whenever I do post, I'm always so happy to read your comments, or see that you've shared my videos and blog posts.

Funny enough, I am like shy about telling others that I have a blog and make videos, although you'd think that's why I share them on my social media right? I don't know... it's a weird thing, but I enjoy making videos and writing these post so this year, I must be more bold about showcasing them. After all, it's not as though I'm committing some offence. I'm just sharing things I've learnt or experienced with you.

I am very gracious for the many opportunities I had in 2015 to learn, advance and grow my skills. Working on the set of Abiola and other short films, doing more makeup sessions for persons, teaching for an entire year, making great connections with new people. I was able to try out some new editing software and will be adding new bits and pieces to my videos to enhance the overall aesthetic. Hopefully this year The Chrisamor Goodie Jar and my channel will also be receiving a facelift that will bring them closer together! So keep your eyes peeled for that.

Every year is one for growth, and in 2016, I wish to do much. I don't wish to expose all right not, but throughout the year, you should hopefully be seeing some changes and I hope that you'll stick around for them.

Hey all! I've missed you all so much. It's definitely been too long since I last blogged, the only reason that I could give you is that life happened. And it was/is hectic.

So around the end of August, I somehow spilled water on my laptop *hides in shame* and had the time of my life to get back my computer from Customs/ my mail forwarder. I didn't get it back until... October, although it was repaired a lot earlier than that. Lesson learnt, people do not always have your best intentions at heart, sadly.

I probably said in a video that I'm still teaching, but not having my laptop which I had prepared a number of things on for this term, meant that I had to work a bit harder than I intended at the start of the term. Thank goodness for Google Drive and the OneDrive though. Even if you don't own a word processor, they have pretty good ones. Also have I mentioned how cool it is that Google allows you to sign into your Chrome and see your tabs from anywhere, even saves the bookmarks across platforms? Well that definitely helped.

Somehow I thought the term would drag along slowly, but instead it went along so swiftly that we're just about 2 weeks before the end. I barely have had time to catch my breath. If I've not been busy marking, or putting together more work for classes, I've been sleeping. Legit, just coming home and sitting down to do something, and within the next few minutes I'm asleep. I tried staying up to at least watch a few YouTube videos (since I can't edit at the moment) or even a show on Netflix, but instead they end up watching me. I'm turning into a 50-year old, haha.

My drive to make a video is there, but my room is ... messy at the moment (read: I ain't got the energy or patience to put everything in a perfect place right now, though I'd like to). I really did just want to talk to yall. Say I'm still alive and making it.

Oh! And I have to make mention to my new hobby, Aerial Silks! I've been trying to stay fit with this really fun experience. (I'm not one who likes the idea of just a gym workout.) If you follow my Instagram you would have seen some of my posts on it.

Anyhow, here are a couple of pics to hold you over until I can make it back to YouTube fully.

Relaxer day & Hair colour change | Relaxed Hair update #11

Hey all! It's been a microwave minute since I last did a hair update. I'm such a bad beauty blogger. Anywho, this weekend I not only relaxed my hair, but I switched up my colour and did a thorough assessment of my problem areas, my thin ends.

Now a little background on my hair. I naturally have very fine strands, which are rather coily/ kinky. My natural texture seemed to be a mix of 4b (top) and 4c (crown to nape). I experience major shrinkage especially at the back due to the very kinky texture. I started using the Vitals Olive Oil No-lye relaxer kit to self-relax in December (2014). In the video, I show you the kind of texture I achieve with this relaxer. It's definitely not bone straight like I would have been into a few years ago, but I like it. This relaxer leaves my hair feeling really smooth and silky.
For Old Years/ New year, I dyed my hair using the Revlon ColorSilk in Medium Golden Brown, and I also highlighted using Clairol Kaleidocolors Neutral toner + bleach and 20 volume developer.

Fast forwarding to now, I've realised I have been way to lax about doing deep treatments for someone who has permanently dyed and bleached hair. On top of that, I noticed a fair amount of shedding around April, as well as breakage particularly around the back of my head.

So I've decided I need to take more drastic measures to take care of and grow my hair. As you could already tell by the video, I changed the colour using a more gentle (and conditioning) "long-lasting" hair colour by Sparks (Purple Passion).
Why you may ask?
1. Usually darker colours give the look of more healthy hair, plus it should coat my hair and help to prevent further damage from the atmosphere. *crosses fingers*
2. I've always wanted to have purple hair. (at least this vibrant)

In using the Sparks dye which contained protein, I mixed in 1 part Shea Moisture Curl & Shine Conditioner and 1 part Queen Helene Cholesterol hair conditioning creme for lots of moisture ad well as to dilute the dye somewhat. After allowing the dye to saturate my strands for a bit over an hour, I rinsed with cool water, then shampooed with the ORS HAIRepair Invigorating Shampoo which is sulfate-free. Following the rinse, I did a deep treatment with the ApHogee 2-step protein treatment and balancing moisturiser.

I finished up by moisturing and sealing, then allowing my hair to air-dry 75%. I then blow-dried and flat-ironed using the L'Oreal Sleek it Iron Straight Heat spray. I also did a little trim after I took the photos, hence the more blunt ends in my Instagram photos and the one below.

From here on in, I plan to treat my hair weekly, if not bi-monthly with either a moisture or protein treatment. I was thinking about doing them in alternating fashion, but it all depends on how my hair responds.

L.A. Girl Glazed lip paints | Swatches & Review

By now you’d think that the hype of these would be dying down, but nah! These are still as relevant as ever. The first time I spotted these (in September 2014) I was either in Cherish, or a beauty supply store and I was stoked, remembering Leina had compared them to the Too Faced Melted lipsticks . Hardly anyone else was on to them. Then of course, our lovely ladies at Moden Makeup posted about them and before you knew it, everywhere had them! Also like most things in Bim, with more hype comes higher, random pricing. So before you run out to go purchase these, be sure to check more than one place for the best price. I wouldn’t suggest paying more than $15 for these. If you’re more interested in the swatches, skip below the review.

I bought mine for around $6- $10. The best place to buy these would be in Cherish supermarket, then Total Care Beauty (in Bridge Street Mall), any of the many Syrian beauty supply stores and then Exotica Makeup, who tends to restock more often than many places, but prices are a bit higher.
These are as the name suggests, lip paints with a very glossy sheen to them. You could of course dull it down by blotting with tissue and powder, but it will significantly diminish the product’s colour. I definitely like the colour range of this line, with L.A. Girl expanding on the original 6 colours last summer, so now you have a total of 18 shades to choose from.

The packaging is… meh. A squeeze tube with a plastic slanted tip which is extremely messy. Applying product directly from this tip can be a real pain in the butt, as the product slides all over the tip and you constantly squeeze out more than you need during the application process. I suggest using a brush, or squeeze out some of the product on your finger first then apply more as needed. On the bright side, the tubes look nice and luxe for a beauty supply store brand, and each tube denotes the colour of the product you’re getting, so there’s little confusion.

The formula is good. I wish I had an OCC lip tar or a Too Face melted lippy to compare it to, since I’ve never had a product quite like this. Some people say it’s very comparable to those though. It is moisturising, but I recommend that you exfoliate prior to wear, as it will stick to those flaky lips like no one’s business, and it’s not a cute look. Even if you wipe it off, the colour remains stuck to the dry flakes and then you absolutely have to exfoliate.

Depending on the shade, you will get full opacity right away, such is the case with Coy and Blushing. However, I find the lighter shades an come off a little chalky, as is the case with Whisper and Elude. Again I am on that journey for the perfect nude. I like that these lip paints have the tingly mint scent/ flavour too. Feels very soothing and therapeutic to apply, ~~or maybe I’m a little crazy~~.

These L.A. Girls lip paints blend together very easily to create a custom shade, or the popular gradient lip. I tend you wear a lip liner with mine if I want a longer wear time, since these last about 2-3 hours on their own. They don’t make it through a meal, but some colours will stain your lips which is a nice look too. Even if they don’t last, there’s so much in the tube that it’s worth reapplying, especially since a small amount stretches!

I would totally buy more, but I have to stop myself because for one, I have way too many lip products to be buying multiples of one type. There are definitely more lip fishies in the sea to try! I think these would be great for beginners as it’s not as dry, or “sophisticated” as lipstick, but it would definitely get you into wearing more daring, bright colours. They’re very affordable and blend together very well to make custom shades, or gradients.

Makeup Doll Cosmetics Lip gloss | Review

Hey all! This review is long overdue, so I'll keep it nice and short. Late last year I bought these 2 lipglosses from MUDC here in Barbados and I've been loving them ever since.

Their new packaging to the lip shockers is very chic and there's even a mirror for you to use when touching up your lip colour. I like that it has a doe foot applicator, because with the previous versions, when the product separated (since this is handmade and natural), it was almost impossible to remix. However now I can use the applicator to give it a stir, such as with Velvet Teddy.
I do wish that the applicator was a little larger though, since it would be a lot quicker to apply the gloss.

There are plenty of colours in this range, however you have to jump for them as soon as they are made (or pre-order) as they sell out very quickly. These cost $15BDS you can contact either Shakita or Ebony via Whatsapp to order them.

I was able to get Velvet Teddy, a creamy brown, and Perfectly Polished, a sheer pink with gold glitter. Both shades are smooth, and glide effortlessly across the lips. Although lightweight, I wouldn't over apply as that may lead to it sliding all over your face.
These glosses are not long lasting, but are very shiny. So don't go thinking they'll last through any meals. They just aren't supposed to.

Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief | Review

Christmas was very good to me. I was able to snag a bunch of skin care minis from Clinique to try out, all while buying gifts. Score! You probably already know I’m always in search of a light-weight yet moisturising moisturiser for my normal skin type. I used to think I had dry skin and so I thought the richer the better, but turns out my face doesn’t agree, especially when you throw Barbados’ heat into the mix.

Clinique Moisture Surge is a line which intends to plump up dry to normal skin with all the moisture possible. The extended thirst relief is to be used as a daily moisturiser and for me, this mini lasted about 2 months consistent use (A.M. & P.M). Not bad at all. You only need a very small amount since this gel-based moisturiser is very concentrated.

Despite being rich, it is definitely more light-weight than the Ponds daily face moisturiser which to me feels more like pound cake, while the Clinique is a sponge cake, in comparison. The Ponds face moisturiser causes me a lot of heartache with clogged pores, especially on my nose and chin. Whereas I noticed a reduction in the amount of whiteheads I was getting while using the Moisture surge.

This light peach cream-gel is something special, and I would rate this even higher than the Garnier Refreshing Gel-cream or Clinique’s own DDMG. This absorbs so quickly into my skin, it feels like my pores are drinking it. It leaves a semi-matte finish to the skin and works great under foundation or BB cream. Even on hot days in Barbados, it doesn’t leave you looking so oily that you could fry chicken. Yet retains moisture very well in air conditioning. Did I also mention this is oil-free?
I’ve not noticed any other special properties with it, which is understandable since it is only intended to moisturise. So make sure that you still use your sunscreen and if you have active breakouts, use your regular topical along with this cream. For sure, your acne won’t be as flaky.

The only thing that really stops me when it comes to this moisturiser is… the price. It is such a doozy! 50mL/ 1.7 oz of product is $38.50USD, while 75mL/2.5 oz is a whopping $52USD. In Cave Shepherd (Barbados), the price of the smaller jar is almost $90BDS. Definitely knocks the wind out of your sails! At least it is larger than the sample… but still, goodness.

Leaves a semi-matte finish on skin
Works great under other face products. (works well when layering skincare & makeup)
Oil-free
Retains moisture all day long
Does not leave your skin feeling or looking oily
Very concentrated so a little goes a long way

This moisturiser would easily attain holy grail status because it is amazing, But that price tag, for little me is a bit much. Maybe if I had a lot more money to play around with every month, I would totally buy it. But until then, the search is on again for a more affordable dupe.

I previously filmed the unboxing video for the candle earlier this month (though it feels like way longer, since I miss making videos). From the time I received this candle, I noticed how strong and yummy the scent was. Even the lady at the post office was confused as to whether I was opening a candle or cake!

Although the scent is supposed to be caramel coffee latte, it smells very sweet and reminds me more of hot chocolate. I would love if they added more coffee aroma to this candle, since coffee is one of my favourite things. But it does make the room smell very yummy! I was a little worried about it burning unevenly since I hadn't trimmed the wick, but so far, it's melted down without a hitch.

These candles are made entirely of soy and they are hand-poured in USA. I think these would make a lovely gift because not only do they smell delicious, but the real surprise is the jewellery item on the inside of your candle. You chose the type of jewellery you wish to receive, but the colour and value of the jewellery is random. Each piece can range from $15USD to $5000USD.

After I comically fished of my necklace, which was still safe in the plastic ziplock bag despite the foil had been cut, I checked the value of it using the code attached to the necklace. It was $18USD :) Not bad at all, and it's very pretty too!

Ruby Kisses Eyeshadow Magic Primer | Quickie Review

Hey all! I purchased the Ruby Kisses (RK) 24hr Eyeshadow magic eyeshadow primer about a year ago... after spotting it in a local beauty supply for about $10BDS. It looks like a dupe for the infamous Urban Decay Primer Potion in terms of name, packaging and formula. I've not been so privileged to try the UDPP, but this primer works like nobody's business.

I read a couple reviews before purchasing, remember that ages ago RK products could be a bit hit or miss, then I took the plunge. Haven't looked back since. This is a great alternative to a more expensive eyeshadow potion and I prefer it over the e.l.f. mineral eyeshadow primer. It's sufficiently sticky so that you the eyeshadow sticks, while still being comfy on the eyes without shadow.

The packaging is simple ans stylish, appears like a magic potion bottle, with a useful doe-foot applicator to dispense the product.

This makes your eyeshadow appear as if it has been freshly applied even after a night's worth of partying (and sweating). I was just amazed by the lasting power this product is capable of. If only I could get my foundation to last as long.

L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara | Review

After seeing the wand of this mascara, I knew I had to try it. I had recently been using the original Voluminous, but this was supposed to be more fantastic. I picked up this intriguing tube of mascara from Collins for $18.15BDS, which isn’t too bad. (I still wish Barbados had coupons for these things)The brush looks a little scary at first, but the promise is that it elongates the lashes, especially at the outer corners of the eye. For anyone who’s ever worn lashes, you know how amazing that makes your eyes look. So did it really give that fluttered look?

Starting off with what I like least about this mascara, the type of formula . It’s a very wet formula mascara and the smell is a bit strong, reminding me of plastic. But as you use it and it dries out a bit, the formula is even more workable. My preference is to a more mousse-dry formula, so it creates volume. I also find wetter formulations end up smearing all over my lid before they dry. I had the same problem with the Voluminous at first, but now I’m in love. The sleek shiny silver tube of the Butterfly mascara, makes it a product I’d want to show off.

The brush is very interesting, and I love it. Those “butterfly wing” tips (there are 2) work wonders for the outer lashes. I love the effect. This is a mascara I could see myself wearing everyday. The brush holds enough product to coat the lashes on both eyes without making too much of a mess, and I am amazed by the buildable volume and length. I always get questioned about wearing false lashes with this mascara on. I can wear a good 2 coats of this for a really dramatic effect, or one coat if I’m in a hurry and still look good. After 3 coats, this mascara starts to look spidery, even if the lashes don’t completely clump up. Just a very weird look.

Although this is the non-waterproof version, it’s stood up the the humidity of Barbados’ climate on these hot summer days, and it hardly flakes. I’d have to be rubbing my eye. I love how easy it is to take off this mascara. Something waterproof mascaras and I get away for. Just a makeup wipe or facial wash, and this glides right off.

For how easy to wear, and how lovely the Voluminous Butterfly makes my lashes look, I’d recommend this to anyone. It doesn’t flake off during wear but, is made quick work of with a makeup wipe or face wash. Easy peasy and fool-proof way to get that false lash effect with.

Although I really wanted too post more often, took a bazillion photos and even edited them to post, I just never seem to have enough energy to make it past 9pm. You know how much I love make up, so when I was invited to Makeup Doll Cosmetics' second makeup party, I jumped at the opportunity! The last time the atmosphere was nice, lots of products, demos and great tips from their makeup artist Anansa, and this time was just as good.

This time Shakita, one of the co-Founders of MUDC opted for the intimate setting of Soothing Care beauty salon in Bridgetown. The salon owner, Chantelle Brathwaite was a lovely host and the setting was beautiful with a fully decorated with a Christmas tree in place for the holiday season too. Around us ladies were having their hair did and there was a nail polish station set up as well. Large mirrors on the walls, bright recess lighting and comfy seating made the salon very modern and inviting.

As for the MUDC party, the newly reformulated Lip Shockers were on display. Sadly since it was the Yuletide season, many of the brighter colours had sold out earlier that week. However I was still able to swatch a few of their shades and pick up 2 of the gorgeous colours.

Anansa of Beyond Imaginations was on site to do a makeup demonstration on the pretty Leonna who is a natural hair blogger. This time Anansa started with the brows, then created a pink and blue smoky eye look, giving her great tips along the way. Then she finished off with the skin and foundation, using a stippling brush for an airbrushed effect.

Throughout the demos, we sipped on yummy natural fruit juices provided by their sponsor. I had golden apple and later coconut punch. They had no added sugar, and were delicious! Always have to get golden apple juice during Christmas time.

Overall it was a great time to be had by all. I can't wait to post the full review on the lip shockers that I purchased. Just a heads up, they're lovely! If you want to get some too, MUDC should be at this year's Girlfriend's Expo in February (next weekend). Trust me, get there early, their products always sell out way too fast!

Mini Powder brush from BornPretty store | Review

A very compact and portable brush, which I've taken with me to work when I'm running late and need to do my makeup on the go.

The brush is very dense, which works well for applying foundation powder or blush. I've not tried any liquids with it, as I tend to shy away from those since it's very hot and humid where I work. I've washed this brush a couple of times, and so far have not experienced any shedding. The bristles remain as soft and offwhite as the first day I got it. That's always nice. I have some duo fibre brushes which are slightly stained from product.

I like that the brush is so fluffy that it gives an even light distribution of foundation, so that you look fresh and not overly done.

This brush is as long as my hand (6-7in) and so it easily fits into my on-the-go makeup bag, yet is large enough to not feel like a toy in my hand. There's also a nice weight to the brush, and it does not feel cheap, or flimsy.
The brush head is a bit too large for applying blush or bronzer, but if you're careful, you can make this a multi-use brush.

Pros:

Portable (small but not useless size)
Dense brush head
easy to clean
Nice weight, does not feel flimsy

Cons:

Brush head too large for applying cheek colours

The Raw Sugar:

I would pick up another of these to swap out of my bag when the other is dirty, or for use at home nice it's so soft and fluffy. In all a good brush!

Maybelline Baby lips Dr.Rescue | Review

Yet another review on this wonderful line of lip products. Do I like it more, like or the same as the original formula?

I’d have to say it’s about the same as the original Baby lips in Peppermint.
The packaging is quite the same as the original, save for the white label which makes it seem more clinical (I guess), and they also sport the same amount of product, 4.4g (0.15oz). The price was $8.75 in Collins if I'm not mistaken. I also think that’s a dollar more expensive than the regular formula.

I‘m not impressed by Dr. Rescue Baby Lips at all. It feels almost the same as the Peppermint original. But I also should note that my lips are hardly ever dry to cracking (thanks to my intake of water). This formula does boast 0.5% Menthol which does feel cooling and minty on the lips. Again something that I experienced with my favourite. The formula is moisturising as with the others, and for the first few days of use made my lips peel. Afterwards, my lips were silky soft.

The colour payoff for the Coral Crave balm I have is non-existent. Not a drop of pigmentation. Good if you plan on using it over lip sticks, but blah if you wanted to give your lips some colour without the hassle.There are other ones though, which may have better pigmentation. I’m yet to try them.

Pros:

Gives slight gloss to the lips

Cons:

Little to no colour payoff
Not very different from the Original Baby lips in Peppermint.

Sally Hansen Hard as Wraps saved my nails | Review

As you may know, I hardly ever paint my nails. But during late July to August, I realised that my nails were getting very soft and flaky. Even my Big toes were suffering. I had to do a bit of a patch job on them, since the Crop Over Season had been so rough on my toes. So in September I decided I couldn’t let my nails suffer this much, so I started taking Biotin and reinforced my aim by purchasing the Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Hard as Wraps top coat.

I couldn't have been happier since!

Despite forgetting to take the supplement daily, using this product as a top coat, or worn alone as been the saving grace for my nails during the last school term. This product was $10.15BDS in Collin’s Pharmacy and the formula is said to be “acrylic gel with Nylon”. They say it’s supposed to seal and harden the nails with a hard wrap-like surface, to prevent chipping, splitting and peeling.

As far as I’ve used it, I’ve got to admit that my nails are most definitely harder and I’ve seen less chipping. Worn alone, it gives the nails a healthy look. While worn over another polish, it has a dazzling gloss finish. I’ve been very happy with how thin and manageable the formula is to apply. It does not drag or take forever to dry. It gives a nice even coverage to the nail and lasts up to a week. The scent is your typical nail odour, strong but wears off as it dries.

In terms of the actual formulation, Sally Hansen states that this is 3-free nail lacquer, Read more about the 3 controversial ingredients here. It does contain Camphor however. Not that this bothers me, as in Barbados we buy and use Camphor straight out of the pharmacy. As Sally Hansen also claims, Nylon and Acrylic gel does appear in the formula, although in the end portion of the ingredient list.
