Hello all,

It's the start of a new year and what better way to start the year off than to announce a few session that I will be presenting at a few conferences and user groups in the next 6 months, it would be great if you could come along!

1st Feb;
Canary Wharf .NET User Group - www.meetup.com/cwdnug/events/47656452/
I'm going to be presenting a session called Developing iOS applications with C# and .NET using MonoTouch. Sadly, this event is already fully booked but if you want to attend, make sure you get your name on the waiting list.

19th April;
Miracle Open World 2012 - mow2012.dk/program/cross-platform-mobile-applications-with-c-and-net.aspx
I'm going to be presenting a session called Cross-platform Mobile Applications with C# and .NET. This will also be my first time in Denmark, which is exciting!

6th - 8th June;
NDC 2012 - ndcoslo.com/speaker
I'm going to be back at NDC 2012 but I haven't nailed down what I'm going to be speaking on as of yet...

If you can make one these events then that would be great, make sure to say hello!

See you there, ChrisNTR

Debugging Mono's class libraries with MonoTouch.

In Xamarin's recent release of MonoTouch 4.2, a feature was included that enables the debugging the Mono framework's class libraries. This means you can debug right into the source code of the Mono framework as you would expect from just debugging into your own code. Since this uses up more space and memory when debugging your applications, this is turned off by default. You can see a video of this feature in action and how to turn the feature on in this short video: http://screencast.com/t/0FLUXkDk5ULU

If you can't watch the video then you can enable this feature by un-ticking the "Debug project code only; do not step into framework code" option in the MonoDevelop/Preferences/Debugger menu like this;

On a side note, I'm stupidly excited for the Amazon Kindle Fire. Interested in finding out the dev story for it though (such as what version of Android it runs on, how awesome will my Mono for Android apps look on it?)

Hope this helps,

Windows Phone User Group comes to Manchester, UK

Hi All,

The Windows Phone User Group has been very successful in London and now it's making its way up to Manchester.

The first WPUG in Manchester is going to be held at MadLab on Edge Street, Manchester and is on 13th September 2011 (tomorrow) and starts from 6.30pm and goes on till around 9.30pm. It's free to attend!

You can find more information and sign up to attend here: http://wpugmcr01.eventbrite.com/

For the first night, we have Pete Vickers talking about the Windows Phone and hopefully some swag to give away too (what type of user group would we be without swag?).

It hasn't gone un-noticed that it's also the night of the BUILD keynote so we're hoping to have some kind of interaction with that event in some form or another but no promises!

Hope to see you all there,

Videos of my MonoTouch and Mono and Mobile sessions from NDC 2011

Two weeks ago, I was in Oslo, Norway getting ready to present a few talks at the Norwegian Developer's Conference 2011 and now two weeks later, it's about time I point you to my MonoTouch and Mono and Mobile talks from the conference!

First I would like to thanks for everyone involved with the conference, the hosts, the staff, the speakers and the attendees. There was so many great talks going on that you're forced to download the videos afterwards!

All the videos from the conference are up on the NDC website for your viewing pleasure - http://ndc2011.no/agenda.aspx?cat=1071, I highly recommend Ander's talk on Coffeescript and Ryan's talk on Node.js as good starting points.

My MonoTouch: State of the Union talk is available directly here - http://ndc2011.macsimum.no/SAL4/Torsdag/1140-1240.wmv

My Mono and Mobile talk is available direct here - http://ndc2011.macsimum.no/SAL4/Torsdag/1500-1600.wmv

Whilst at the conference, there was a live panel discussion for .NET Rocks on Mobile Development - http://ndc2011.macsimum.no/SAL4/Torsdag/1740-1840.wmv

There is also an unofficial video torrent which is available here - http://goo.gl/IKrBh - An official torrent feed will be available at a later date with other video format options.

Thanks again if you came to any of my sessions and I hope you had an enjoyable NDC!

Xamarin - The future of MonoTouch and Mono for Android

As you may have noticed from my blog, I sure do like talking about MonoTouch and Mono for Android (MonoDroid).

Yesterday, Miguel announced that the team behind MonoTouch and Mono for Android had been laid off after Novell's take-over from Attachmate. Obviously this leaves Attachmate in charge of those two products without anyone to work on them or to support them - yet your products are still licensed and will continue to work.

Along with the announcement that the team had been laid off came that Miguel and the rest of the Mono, MonoTouch and Mono for Android-istas were hard at work on their new start up Xamarin. This companies will seemingly fill in the gap of where MonoTouch and Mono for Android left off and where MonoTouch and Mono for Android are heading into the future - albeit with a different name and a different product.

There have been some good write ups about this situation, I recommend you check out the following links;

One Brit off to Mix11

This time next week, I'll be on a plane heading over to Mix 11.

If you're heading there, then please get in touch, I'd love to talk to you about either Windows Phone 7, iPhone development with MonoTouch, Android development with Mono for Android as well as ASP.NET MVC, Umbraco, EPiServer and the like.

In case you didn't know, I work for Great Fridays over in the UK so take a look at the website to see what sort of work we do too and hopefully that'll start up a conversation.

Sessions!

With 123 sessions currently announced, there are lots of great sessions at Mix 11 this year, here are a selection of sessions you're not going to want to miss (or at least download them after the conference!).

Bootcamp - Silverlight Boot Camp

If you're going to be attending the Mix 11 bootcamp the day before the main event, then don't miss out on Mike Taulty and John Papa's session. Last year's bootcamp seemed like the most well received of them all and this year is probably going to be no different.

Bootcamp - Windows Phone 7 Boot Camp

Adam Kinney and Grant Hinkson are going to put on a great bootcamp on getting from file new project to submitting an app to the Marketplace with this bootcamp, again, if you're going to the boot camps then make sure you go to this one!

Mono: State of the Union

So the Mix team actually invited Miguel De Icaza back to talk about everything Mono. You don't want to miss this.

Scaffolding – ASP.NET, NuGet, Entity Framework Code First and More

Having seen Steven Sanderson speak at a few UK community events, this will be a great session. Author of arguably the best ASP.NET MVC book out there, Steven now works at Microsoft for the ASP.NET team.

Agile .NET Cloud-Deployment with Git

Michael Friis is going to be doing a session which ultimately is going to all be about AppHarbor.com. I have to say, AppHarbor is one of the most exciting things about deployment and ASP.NET for a long time, often referred to as the ".NET version of Heroku" or "Azure done right".

Of course, you can find all of the sessions listed here - Session List

Mix on your mobile

Last year at Mix 10, I helped Craig Dunn out with his iPhone application for the conference. This year, you can grab the Mix 11 application for both iPhone and Windows Phone 7.

See you all there!

NDC 2011!

I'm luckily getting the opportunity to speak at NDC 2011 this year. Last year was a blast and I'm sure 2011 is going to be no different.

I'm going to be speaking on the second day (Thursday June 9th) and I'll be joined in track four with some other awesome mobile guys too!

At the moment, the whole agenda hasn't been confirmed and I guess is still likely to change so make sure you keep on checking for new speakers. Don't forget that Scott Guthrie is keynoting the whole conference!

I'm going to be doing two sessions, one on MonoTouch and one on Mono and the whole mobile spectrum. Feel free to leave any comments if there's anything you want to see in the sessions.

Hope to see you there!

How many days until Xmas?

Here's an interesting thought on how many days until Christmas there are.

As you may know, I created an application on doing exactly this, counting how many days there are until Christmas. You can find the application here - http://bit.ly/acLe1V. Recently, I have been seeing people comment on saying that the count until Christmas is not correct and a day or two short. As of writing (7.30pm on Monday 29th November) there are 25 days until Christmas. By this, I mean that in fact there's about 25 days, 4 hours and 30 minutes (or so) left. This means that on Christmas Eve, there will be zero days left until Xmas. When the application gets down to this point, the countdown will read like so;

Days 0, Hours 4, Minutes 30, etc... and when they all reach 0, 0, 0, it will be Christmas!

It seems that, even though 25 days is accurate, most people are used to the idea of having 1 day until Christmas being left on Christmas Eve. So from Version 1.6 of the Days Until Xmas app, I will be updating the app to use this logic to display the count down until Xmas!

Hopefully this will sort out the confusion for some people using the app.

Thanks to those who are enjoying the app and leaving some lovely reviews!

ChrisNTR

Live tiles for Days Until Xmas

Yesterday I blogged about the release of the Days Until Xmas application (don't forget you can grab it from the Zune Marketplace here - http://bit.ly/acLe1V).

A lot of the feedback I have been getting from friends and reviewers (can we please get the ability to respond to reviewers comments on the Zune Marketplace?) is that the application needs live tiles, which shows the days running down to Christmas. This is something I kept thinking and thinking about and it ended up coming down to the two ways you can update the live tiles on Windows Phone 7. These are...

Push Notifications

Push notifications is probably the most common way data is going to *pushed* to your phone/application. Push notifications require a separate server to send the push notifications and also to know the unique URI of the device that will receive the notification. In the case of the Days Until Xmas application, this would create lots of work to manage users who have signed up for the application, what time-zone the user is in, every time the application loads up we would need to check that the user is in the same time zone and so on. The server would then every half an hour need to check if any of the users time zones went over the day mark and send a push notification out so the tile could be update. Since this is just a fun out of hours project, this could consume a lot of time to implement. This still wouldn't account for users who have push notifications turned off/have no data access and would leave an incorrect day on the home screen.

Local Notifications

The ShellTileSchedule allows the developer to schedule updates to the phone without the need for any external server managing push notifications. This still requires the need to have a data connection since any live tile received from the application comes from an external URL. The schedule can be set to fire off at intervals throughout the day, however; the issue with this is in the context of the Days Until Xmas application is that the URL, where the application goes to gather the live tiles is hard coded, for a shell tile schedule is the same for each scheduled interval. This means that we cannot go and get a different day/tile for the current application without changing the image URL when the application loads up so the application would update the tile every time the app loads up but kind of defeats the point of a live tile.

Your thoughts...

So after hearing this, what are your thoughts? Maybe I'm missing something obvious but sadly time is a rather complex thing and varies from location to location but I'm open for any ideas.

I hope this helps, maybe it's worth having the tile update when you load up the application anyway?

Cheers,

ChrisNTR

Days Until Xmas for Windows Phone 7

Today I'm happy to announce my first free Windows Phone 7 application is up on the Windows Marketplace.

Grab the application here - http://bit.ly/acLe1V

What is it? Well, it's a Days Until Christmas application and simply tells you how long until Christmas Day! You may already notice a few applications on the store that do a similar thing but this one I think is much nicer looking and is also free. See below for a video of the application running in the simulator - although I don't have a Windows Phone 7 device - I'd love to see your own videos of the app running on a real device.

I would like to thank Adam Kinney, Dom Barnfather and Jonas Follesø for helping getting the application up and on the store, testing on a device and generally helping out with ideas.

Let me know what you think,

Cheers,

I'm happy to announce that I'm speaking at the Hampton Roads .Net User Group in Virginia, USA on Wednesday 24th November. In my session, I'll be speaking on both MonoTouch (Developing applications for iPhone in .Net) and MonoDroid (Developing applications for Android in .Net). I believe that the event is being held in a new venue so make sure you check the event brite page below for a map and information.

If you want to attend then you can go ahead and register for the event (it's free!) here - http://www.eventbrite.com/event/986186711.
Slides from my WP7, iPhone and Android talk at DDD8a.

Yesterday was the Modern .Net DDD Conference where I spoke on Windows Phone 7, MonoTouch and MonoDroid and how to program across the three platforms and the problems you may hit against.

I've put my slides up on SlideShare.net and embedded them below, unfortunately they don't make a whole load of sense without my monotone voice but hopefully you can grab something useful from them.

WP7, Droid, iPhone, Oh my!

I used two pre-recorded videos in my session of myself doing "Live" code since I was on a Mac and the live code needed a windows machine, these videos are up on YouTube (and embedded below too). The MonoDroid one is heavily cut down so make sure you watch the WP7 one first to get a good idea of the Twitter application that was getting built.

I would also like to take this time to thank everyone who attended the event, attended my session, the speakers and the sponsors. A fantastic day was had and I hope everyone else had a fantastic day too.

The attendee list is full but there's a waitlist so you might make it through on that. Since the event is based around "Modern .Net", I will be talking about mobile development with .Net across all three platforms, focusing on MonoTouch, MonoDroid, WP7 development and what Mono can bring to that platform. The session will also discuss the differences between the two platforms as a whole from development experience and deploying your applications and the problems and pitfalls to look out for when re-using code and porting applications across to other platforms.

My session starts at 9.30am so I doubt I'll be seeing Seb in the front row but hopefully everyone can make it in that early! Anything you want to see or hear about? Then leave a comment and I will see if I can fit it into my talk.

Cheers,

ChrisNTR

Using NuPack with MonoDroid

In case you haven't heard, the Outercurve Foundation released an early CTP1 version of NuPack, a package management system for .Net. This project allows for other projects and their dependencies to be added directly into an application. This alleviates the need to go searching around the web to figure out where a project is, what dependencies it needs, what version is support for which version of the framework, NuPack will take care of this for you. It will also let you know if there's an update available for that project too. More information can be found about NuPack here.

For the past few weeks I have been playing around with the latest MonoDroid CTP bits (sign up here if you want to get involved) and ported over the Json.net library created by James Newton King to be used on MonoTouch and MonoDroid (you can find the project on Github). With NuPack getting released, what better way would there be to get MonoDroid .Net libraries integrated into your MonoDroid application than using NuPack itself.

Since MonoDroid is a framework, when we create the NuPack package targeting MonoDroid and all we have to do to allow the library to work is to create a "MonoDroid20" folder under our lib folder (following the conventions from the NuPack documentation) to allow this. The reason we're using "20" is that the version of MonoDroid is actually 2.0, which apparently helps with targeting Silverlight and MonoTouch bits in the core lib. Now my package list looks a little like the image below:

I could push this library up to the official NuPack Packages project but MonoDroid is still currently in private preview and the list of packages doesn't filter down by framework, I didn't want to fill the package list with something most people won't use. I have however filed a bug for framework filtering so feel free to vote it up http://nupack.codeplex.com/workitem/235.

I'm now just waiting for MonoDevelop to support NuPack packaging so I can get MonoTouch libraries up and running on NuPack too.

Hope this helps,

ChrisNTR

Develop with C# on the Android? Sure - Introducing MonoDroid

Incase you haven't heard of MonoDroid before, it is a future product to be released by Novell which allows you to use C# and the .Net framework to develop applications on an Android device.

If this sounds something you're interested in, then make sure you sign up here - http://go-mono.com/monodroid/

On Wednesday night a Private Preview went out to 250~ developers, this release is not to represent a release worthy product of MonoDroid, nor be bug free, but a Community Tech Preview, to borrow a Microsoft term, to allow the MonoDroid team to iron out any issues with MonoDroid that may occur and to steer the product in a direction that makes it better for everyone that uses it. This is similar to the way that MonoTouch was released almost a year ago, first to developers to shape the final output and then finally release MonoTouch but continue to provide amazing support and exciting new features with every release.

Currently, MonoDroid only works on a Windows machine running Visual Studio 2010. Since it uses a Visual Studio plug-in, you won't be able to use an "Express" edition of the product to preview MonoDroid either. The good news is that MonoDevelop, a cross platform IDE, support is likely to show up in Preview 2 or 3 of MonoDroid. This should then allow you to develop MonoDroid applications on a Mac and Windows; I have no idea about Linux but I don't see why not if the emulator runs on Linux too!

If you're lucky enough to get selected to be part of the MonoDroid preview, then the most important thing you can do is to submit bug reports if you come across anything that doesn't work or that doesn't work in a way you expected. This is incredibly important as doing this correctly will not only make the product as bug free as possible, but it will also make the product better for everyone, and of course make it better for you. To submit a bug, you will need to create an account on Novell's bugzilla site here - https://bugzilla.novell.com/index.cgi and submit a bug with plenty of information about what you were doing, where you were doing it and what made the bug happen. If the bug is Runtime/Code related then a simple solution/project that re-creates the bug would be the best.

If you want to see more information on MonoDroid, then check out the offical page here - http://monodroid.net/ and also the GitHub code samples here - http://github.com/mono/monodroid-samples. There's also a great video on a Hello World MonoDroid app here - http://vimeo.com/14257921.

I'm going to be speaking on MonoTouch and MonoDroid in Manchester at the NextGen UG on Wednesday September 15th 2010 so if you're in and about Manchester then pop in and hear about MonoTouch and MonoDroid in more detail.

Update: If you're interested in knowing *how* MonoDroid works then there is a lot of detail on this over on the MonoDroid site here: http://monodroid.net/Documentation/Architecture
By signing up for the MonoDroid previews, you will automatically get added to the MonoDroid mailing list. Whilst there are lots of e-mails flying around, this is a great place to find out about the following;

Find out about bugs other people have found so that you do not have to submit the same bug on Bugzilla.

Know when a bug is fixed and when a new preview is available with bug fixes for downloading.

Ask for any enhancements to the product, though I recommend taking a look at the MonoDroid site and Roadmap to see if it's a feature already being worked on.

I recommend using a filter on the mailing list to make sure your inbox doesn't fill up with all the MonoDroid e-mails and if you don't want to help out on the mailing list then you can click on the link at the bottom of any e-mail to unsubscribe.

Hope this helps,

ChrisNTR

Inspecting iPhone web requests with Charles on a Mac

Side-note: Craig wrote a similar blog post on this but using Fiddler, which only works on a Windows machine...

In case you are not aware, Charles is a web debugging proxy that you can use on your machine to inspect web requests that are happening live. This is a really useful tool if you're wanting to debug why a certain web request isn't coming back as expected or to see what headers are being sent with that request. Sometimes you are wanting to inspect the same issues on the iPhone but obviously you can't just fire up Charles on the device

To allow this to work, you will need to make sure that both the iPhone and machine running Charles are on the same network. By default Charles is set to listen out for any web requests on the desktop machine and is set to listen to external requests on port 8888. On the iPhone, you want to go into Settings -> Wi-Fi -> and then click the blue icon on the connected Wi-Fi connection.

This will take you to a more in depth view of your network setting, by scrolling down right to the bottom, you'll see HTTP Proxy settings which by default will be set to "Off". We will want to select "Manual" and fill in the server and port settings.

The server setting will be the IP address of the machine running Charles - you can either run the command 'ifconfig' in Terminal on the machine running Charles or open up the Network settings and check under status. For me, my IP address will be 192.168.1.68. And the port setting will be 8888 (the default port on Charles).

After entering in these values, the iPhone will now be waiting for a HTTP request to proxy through to Charles. To simply check this is working, open up Safari Mobile and enter in Google.com. You should noticed that Charles is now prompting you to Allow or Deny access from a remote host, this will be your iPhone so press Allow.

On your iPhone you should now see the Google homepage load up as expected and you will now also see the requests coming through on Charles too as per the image below.

Make sure you turn off the proxy after debugging otherwise your iPhone will keep looking to connect to the proxy whether it is there or not.

Hope this helps,

ChrisNTR

Norwegian Developers Conference 2010 - Aftermath

First of all - NDC 2010 rocked. I had a great time over in Oslo, which despite being super expensive is also wonderfully beautiful. The conference was wonderfully well put together and had a great time meeting plenty of familiar faces as well as many other new faces.

A few of the things I was involved with at NDC 2010...

.Net Rocks Podcast: I was warmly invited onto the show by Carl Franklin with Jackson Harper to chat about Mono, Moonlight and MonoTouch. It was quite surreal being in a fishbowl in the middle of a big arena but fun none-the-less.

ASP.NET MVC vs Ruby On Rails Panel / .Net Rocks Live! - I was lucky enough to be a part of a live .Net Rocks Web panel on the last day of the conference with Scott Bellware, Hadi Hariri and Rob Conery. I'm glad it didn't turn into a big "Which framework/language is better" because it's really easy to use both. I even run monotouchexamples.com on Rails so I'm a big proponent for both technologies.

My Sessions;

Introduction to MonoTouch

I have given this talk a few times in different places yet it still manages to change somewhat - with both the speed at which things are happening in the MonoTouch world, new apps being created, new terms of service being forced upon developers and new operating systems being released. The slides for this session will be added soon and the video being found in the title above.

Slides coming soon.

MonoTouch Deep Dive

Unfortunately, "Deep Dive" might have been slightly the wrong name for the session but I wanted to use it as a way of demonstrating the possibilities available for use on the iPhone with MonoTouch, what the community has done for MonoTouch and useful examples of re-using existing code in your projects. Again, the video for the session is in the link above with slides following underneath as well as a zip of the projects used in my session.

Slides coming soon.

Examples from my session - http://bit.ly/dtbIrq

Again, I just wanted to say thank you to Anders, Rune, Henriette and everyone else involved with the conference, it was truly fantastic!

Hope to be back next year... who knows?

ChrisNTR
