Lately I have been working on some more felted slippers. They are perfect even around this time of the year as Spring is really testing us with the chilly temps and all the rain we have been having these past few day. I am really glad I have a pair of my own now - been wearing the ones I made for my mister until I finally had the time to cast on for a pair of my own. It's rare that I get the chance to knit something for myself - with all the orders I get from family and friends I hardly ever have time for personal knitting.

What about you? Do you have time to knit for yourself?

There hasn't been a lot reading going on other than magazines and the morning newspaper, yes - I prefer the newspaper rather than the iPad - I don't know, it just feels right.

It's been a long day at the office - I had to work overtime because my co-worker is on vacation and there was just so much to be done. Normally I leave the office at around 12:30 pm, today I left at 3:30 pm. I feel totally drained and worn out (late night True Blood sessions might add a bit to being so tired - a new addiction) and so I thought I'd share a few things that have caught my eye around the world wide web lately. I haven't blogged or posted anything in 2 days and I don't feel bad about it - at all (that's a first). Normally I feel bad when I abandon this little place of mine, but sometimes I think it's good to take a step back. In the past 3 years since starting this blog of mine, I have learned that it is absolutely normal to have these dry spells where you struggle finding the right words or finding something to write about for the matter. It's ok to take a little break every now and then to focus on life.

That's what I have been doing lately, focusing on life - spending quality time with my family, going out in the backyard tending to my flower beds, taking time to read a book or finish a knitting project or took the time to cuddle with my 'furry' girls.

I think I found a new friend today...

Today my whole company went to visit the new location we'll be moving to. Before that we all got invited for lunch - it was super delicious, I had trout with fresh asparagus (it's asparagus season here). We all shared cars - one of my female co-workers joined me in my car. It was just the two of us. We had never really spoken a lot before because she is the cleaning lady and I am always long gone when she starts working in the afternoon. But we noticed right away that we "clicked".

She is 51 - I am 38. She has two kids, a daughter who is 20 and goes to college in Munich and a son who is 24 and is in assisted living. When he was 3 years old he got diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. A friend of mine has Asperger's - he is really exhausting to be around. Sometimes he's totally calm and normal, but he always talks a lot....he talks to himself - a lot...and he can be very loud, enraged and violent as well. I can hardly stand to be with him for more than a couple of hours - after that I feel so exhausted. He always sucks out all my energy and it takes a while for me to return to my usual self again after meeting him.

I can only imagine how it must be to have a child with Asperger's. It must be so hard. What a strong woman she must be. To think that she has been dealing with this for over 24 years. How emotionally and physically exhausted she must be. I told her how much I admired her for being so strong. I asked her where she got that unimaginable strength from...and that I thought she must have a big support system behind her, like family and friends - because how can one person get through something like this alone - all by herself?! When you're in such a situation you just need a hug and positive energy from others every now and then.

That's when she started crying. She told me that no one ever supported her or understood that her strength was exhausted. She said that no one ever understands why she cries sometimes. Nobody, not even her husband. She thanked me for being the first person who ever understood her. She thanked me for letting her cry. She thanked me for being there for her. There, in that one moment, today, on our drive home. I pulled over and looked at her - we both had tears in our eyes and I just had to hug her. I felt her pain and sorrow. I know how hard it can be to put up a facade for others to see - because that's what they want to see.

When I stopped in front of her house - she thanked me again and told me how our time together had uplifted her and how much strength she had drawn from it. She couldn't believe that I understood her - that someone really understood her for the very first time ever. I'll give Leonie an extra big hug when she goes to bed tonight. I am so grateful to have a healthy child.

I think I found a new friend today...

Things that have been on my mind

Why is it sometimes so hard to find the right words? Lately I have been struggling with what to write/ blog about. It's like I am stuck and there is no way I can find the right words to tell you what's on my mind. Not a lot has been going on, yet a lot has been going on. I kind of felt the urge to go out there and do "things" instead of sitting in front of an empty screen trying ever so hard to come up with something read-worthy.

Do you know what I mean?

So many things are on my mind...job wise, the moving date of the company I work for is coming closer and I haven't figured out what to do - I have an appointment at the job center tomorrow to sort things out and find out what I can/ have to do.

So many things have been on my mind...considering an own business - self-employment....something I can do for myself...the mister and I have been talking a lot about this and where we'd want it to go...this might really be something...we'll see. I will definitely keep you posted.

So many things have been on my mind...regarding the US...many tears have been shed since coming back because of my tremendous homesickness. We haven't given up our dream of going back - we never will give it up and are still working on it. Things might get clearer towards the end of this year - it's these kind of things that make me appreciate how fast time seems to be flying by.

Just a normal day

- got out of bed at 6:10 am this morning, prepared breakfast and packed lunches for my loves

- took a long hot shower and had my first cup of coffee afterward

- drove to the office and heard will.i.am's 'Good Morning' in the radio

- somehow managed to get through those 4.5 hours at the office

- drove home and walked the pup

- made lunch for my girl and I

- helped her with her homework

- weeded the heck out of my flower beds, now my hands and my back are hurting

- planted some new shrubs and herbs

- came back inside and had another cup of coffee, which was actually my third one...oops

So, what are you up to today? Anything special?

Mother's Day Recap

Mother's Day was wonderful - I woke up to an amazing breakfast my loves had prepared for me. Leonie got me some flowers, a special colored picture and a coupon for cleaning the house (she did point out that it was a one time thing and couldn't be redeemed more than once...lol).

Later in the afternoon we met up with my sister and her kids at my parent's for coffee and homemade cake and back at home we had a yummy BBQ. You might have guessed it, we had way too much food, so we took it down a notch food-wise today. haha

My new vacuum is uh-mazing, I could seriously vacuum all the time! Some might say that it's not ok to gift a home appliance for Mother's Day, but let me tell you, if it's one like this one, it's totally fine with me! I have been wanting one of these ever since we returned from the US - we had one there which we couldn't bring back with us because it wouldn't work here - and now I finally have it! Yay!

It's been a fun 4-day weekend which made it hard to return to the office this morning. I somehow managed to get through the day, it's been kind of a weird one. I am glad it's over and I can brush it off and try and make tomorrow a better one!

19/52 - Happy Mother's Day

It's been a fun week celebrating Leonie's 10th birthday more or less all week long since Wednesday. Thursday was a national holiday here and the mister and I took the day off on Friday because school was out for that day, so we all had a 4-day weekend! Yipee!

On Friday we went shopping in Würzburg and 'found' Claire's! Now you will probably think that this is nothing special, but it was the first time we saw one in Germany and Leonie was ecstatic - this was one of her (probably like most girls her age) favorite stores to shop during our time in Chicago - we spent about 30 minutes in there - need I say more?! We also went to our favorite local sushi place and had some super delicious food - afterward we stopped at a cute little cafe for some iced coffees and ice cream for Leonie.

Saturday was half spent shopping for new plants for our garden and some pressies for our moms, later in the afternoon the mister's parents and sister came to celebrate Leonie's birthday, because they weren't able to make it on Wednesday. Which meant another round of presents to unpack for my girl - yay!

Oh, and look what the mister got me for Mother's Day:

I think vacuuming might become one of my new hobbies - lol - I am in love!

Kind of crazy to think a vacuum could make one so happy, right!

Made these Pom-Poms for Leonie's birthday using this tutorial and they were an absolute hit with all guests! Everyone loved them!

We all love them and we probably all made them back in the days...I remember pinning them to my jeans and making them under the table during class. Today my daughter makes them and I love watching her!

A Green Thumb

I've said it before and I cannot say it often enough - I LOVE SPRING!

Next to fall it's my second favorite season - I love watching nature coming to life again.

Everything starts turning green after the long winter, the birds start chirping again, the ants start crawling again, the bees are summing and the pup loves rolling over in the fresh green grass.

I've never enjoyed gardening as much as I do this year - I have always liked it, but something is just different this time around. Maybe it's the huge progress that has been happening in the past few weeks which is so uplifting to me. Whatever it is, I hope it'll last forever.

I hope you don't mind me continuously posting photos of our garden - I just love taking pictures of the blossoms and the bright colors to keep a proof of the progress happening around us.

Pitch Perfect

I missed Pitch Perfect in theaters - I had all intentions of going, but then again, it's so hard to find a cinema that shows original none dubbed movies here in Germany. So when I can't find one showing the movie I want to watch in its original version, I rather not go see it there, I will wait til it's out on dvd and then go get one to watch it.

Most of the time I will rent it, watch it and that's that. But, after seeing all the trailers and videos on youtube I knew I just had to buy the dvd. Said and done - I LOVE the movie! So glad I own it and can watch it when ever I feel like it!

Did you see it and did you like it? And how amazing is Anna Kendrick's singing voice?

For all you preggos - Mommy Mondays

People will always judge you, no matter where you are or what you do. They will always find something about you that doesn't fit to their beliefs and does not fit to what they have been taught. But, you know what, it doesn't matter - just let them!

Especially when becoming a mom, people judge. It starts once they know you are expecting, giving tons of 'good' advices, watching you what you eat (is it healthy enough?), what you drink (don't you dare have alcohol or caffeine), how you dress (no high heels) and the list goes on and on.

When I found out I was pregnant, I stopped smoking right away - yep, I was a smoker before (never touched a cigarette ever since), I didn't drink any alcohol, at all and I only drank decaf coffee (boy did I miss my coffee)! I ate a balanced diet which wasn't hard at all, because I was craving all kinds of healthy things like all sorts of fruits, nuts, salads and fish! No raw fish for preggos though, which means no sushi!

I remember my co-workers, the female ones, watching exactly what I was doing, because they knew I had smoked before and because another co-worker of mine, she was 7 months pregnant when I found out we were expecting, never stopped smoking and also admitted that she would not for anything in the world pass on her daily glass of red wine in the evenings. (I secretly judged her, too, just a little bit)

I felt good about watching myself and my body for this precious little life that was growing inside of my belly and I wanted for her to have the best start possible...well, little did I know that this little something called pre-eclampsia would get in the way.

I guess what I am trying to say is that first and foremost you have to listen to your guts! After all you are the on expecting, you know better what's best for you and your baby than anyone else. It doesn't hurt to take an advice here or there, because all those experienced moms around you might have learned it the hard way and are more than willing to help a sister out, right! haha

So if you're craving coffee, go and have one and if you feel like wearing heels, go for it!

Nothing hurts as long as it's in moderation.

I bet you've noticed a lot of springy flower things going on over here. Well, as a home owner with a garden there is so much work to do all the time once everything starts growing and blooming again. There are so many dandelions everywhere in these parts this year and although I love them, I also hate them, cause they are a weed after all and they have infested our backyard. I have to admit though, I am contemplating just letting them be and not try and 'fight' them any longer - because let's be honest, this is a battle I will not win! haha Nonetheless there has been a lot of planting going on....I just can't resist buying new plants to spruce up our home!

This weather makes for wonderful walks with the pup after work. She never really wants to return home again, she'd keep on going forever! Kitty loves joining us for anything we do at the table...yeah, I know, she's on the table...and some think that's gross...but what can I say...I just love her!

Yesterday I found "True Blood" season one for 9.99 on sale and I just had to get it. I never watched season one and that's probably the reason why I never really got into it...we'll see if this changes that. A lot of you have been telling me that season 1 and 3 were the best...at least there's some eye candy in it, so I should be fine. lol

It's been awhile since I last posted a Fashion Statement - but it's just so much fun putting together an outfit. I remember my first tries at this...haha...until a dear blog friend introduced me to Polyvore. It was sometime in late 2010 shortly after I had started blogging. Goodness I can't even believe that this is actually my third year of blogging. Kind of awesome and something I am certainly proud of.

How long have you been blogging? How did you get into it? I remember the mister always wanting to start a blog to showcase our expat life during our time in the US. He did start one only to find out that followers don't just come along...lol...and so he shut it down again shortly after.

I put together an outfit full of some of my current favorite colors. I mean coral is an all-time fave and marlene pants sure are as well. I am very tall and not the skinniest, so wide legged pants have always been pretty flattering. Well, and the rest of the outfit sort of speaks for itself.

It's been a short week with May Day being a day off and I am so ready to sleep in tomorrow morning. Our plans for this weekend are preparing everything for Leonie's birthday on Wednesday - she is so excited and she wishes nothing more than to get an xbox - I guess an xbox it will be! Any game suggestions? She really wants kinectimals.

A Getaway

Lately I have been feeling so drained - like there is no strength left inside of me to fulfill the simplest of tasks. Drained both emotionally and physically. I feel the desperate need for a break, a small vacation, a weekend getaway to try and re-charge my batteries. A getaway from my family. As much as you love them and as much as you need them, sometimes one just needs some space. Space from the everyday. Space from your loved ones. I feel the need to be somewhere quiet, where I can actually hear my thoughts and think them out. Where I am able to just focus on myself, on my feelings, on my mind, on my body and soul. I am hoping to make this happen very soon - I bet I would feel so much better and rejuvenated after returning.

Do you sometimes feel the need to escape from it all? Have you done it?

Happy 1st of May - Happy May Day to everyone celebrating.

Today is a national holiday here in Germany - May Day or Labour Day -

which means we are happy campers enjoying the day off.

May is one of my favorite months of the year for so many reasons

It's the birth month of Leonie, my precious daughter, who will be 10 this year on the 8th!

May is also the month the mister was born in - which means 2 birthday parties for us, every year!

It's the absolute Spring month with nature literally exploding. Loving all the pretty blossoms everywhere!

During this time of the year everyone finally comes out of their 'winter nutshells' again, to enjoy life outside in nature again.

Gardening is a big hobby for us and this is the perfect time for it. There is still so much that needs to be done, but we're taking it one step at a time.

Now I can finally sit outside on the patio with my latte and knitting project! Ah, pure bliss!

The pup loves laying in the green grass next to the patio just dozing the day away and our kitty inhales the wonderful spring breeze coming in through the open windows!

My sister has a new convertible and we love driving around, top down and the music turned up with the wind blowing through our hair!

It makes it a lot easier to see the wonderful things that surround us when the sun is shining, right?

Oh, and I totally forgot to mention....the mister and I had our 10 year anniversary on April 29th!

Here's to many more to come!

Almost 10

9 more days...then my child will be 10 years old...oh my, I can't quite believe it. 10 years! How on earth did that happen? Where did these past 10 years go so fast? I can still remember holding her in my arm, that tiny sweet baby girl, still all wrinkly and so soft. Oh how I loved that newborn scent! I loved her scent! She was just perfect as I held her in my arms on that first day.

I remember everyone telling me to cherish those first few years of having a baby/ toddler because they'd be over way too soon. And time sure went by so fast. All those different development stages we went through together...from lying around the first few weeks to rolling over, to crawling and then soon after she made her first very own steps. Jumping and running, learning to ride her tricycle and shortly after her trainer bike (which I really recommend) and then riding her bike. Learning how to swim, horseback-riding, roller blading, ice skating, rope jumping...how to do a cart wheel or a handstand, jumping jacks...and so many other things.

Now she's on her way to becoming a teenager so fast, that I can hardly hold my breath. Soon she will most likely not want to hold my hand any longer when we stroll through the city or a mall (she did hold it when we were on our shopping spree last Saturday!) She will probably not want me to give her a kiss in public or tell her that I love her. Or maybe she won't mind all these things at all...after all, she's my girl! Who knows...we'll see...and however it will be, it will be fine.

It's been a pretty hectic week filled with work during the day and the evenings filled with planting our new thuja hedge. The weather has been wonderful up until Friday. The temps went up and we were able to get all plants into soil before Thursday. All 55 of them! Yay! The rain came just in time for the weekend. We took it as a sign to rest and not keep working in the backyard. Even though we had planned to give our lawn some much needed TLC. So a change of plans was in order and we decided to drive to a mall called Breuningerland in Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart, which is about a 1.5 hours drive away from us.

We stopped at a Burger King on the way for some lunch - I know, I know, not the healthiest of choices, but since there isn't one near our home, we decided to indulge in some bacon burgers and fries. There are about 120 different stores at the mall, we had a lot of fun, treated ourselves to some delicious chai tea lattes at Starbucks (if you've known me for a while, even during our time in Chicago, you will know how much I love them!), did a little shopping here and a little shopping there and then we started back for home.

The mister got me a new mug from the big S and a new quilting book! It's fabulous and I cannot wait to get started on my small first ever quilt. Leonie was lucky and got some cute sneakers, t-shirts and shorts and some little extras on the way. Well, I guess you gotta treat yourself to a few new goodies from time to time, right?

20 Wishes Progress Report #3 Link Up

I posted my 20 wishes at the beginning of November and my first progress report post went live on December 20th 2012. My progress report #2 was in February and I totally missed to post my progress in March (oops)! It's definitely time to see if I made any more progress.

Here we go...

So here go my 20 wishes:

learn how to sew - ~~started 'making friends' with me sewing machine~~ Started sewing with my new purrty machine and it is so much fun.Didn't make anything 'big' yet, just played around with it and some old fabric scraps I have, before trying myself on a small quilt. I already have the fabric!
knit or crochet an afghan - ~~started working on it, made some progress, but got ways to go~~ still didn't make much of a progress here, so many other projects got in the way and with the weather being warmer, I set it aside for colder weather later this year.
read more books - ~~picked up a new book and still trying to find my way into the story (it's a German novel)~~ I ditched that German novel, it was awful...instead I finally read 'The Host' and am now eager for the movie to hit theaters here in Germany.
start drawing / painting again - ~~started doing some water color paintings with Leonie~~ I painted some small canvasses for our renovated hallway but other than that no new paintings around these parts.
travel to cities in Europe I haven't been to - ~~still waiting for warmer weather~~ We've got a trip planned to Berlin very soon and I am so excited about it - I've never been to the capitol of Germany and can't wait!
Disneyland Paris with the fam - ~~will happen in Spring - yay~~ I am in the process of booking tickets, we just have to set a date and then it will happen!
take a trip to the North Sea - ~~is planned for the summer~~ Still planned for the summer vacation.
go more hiking - did some hiking in the fall with the ~~fam, actually went on a small hike last weekend~~ I totally went on more hikes, with the fam and the pup but also alone just with the pup. It feels so good to be out in nature and it makes you feel somewhat accomplished afterward.
a weekend trip with my girlfriends - ~~is postponed due to an illness of my girl friend~~ We still haven't managed to find a new date for the 4 of us, seems like one of us is always busy otherwise. We'll see if this happens.
Project life - d~~id not happen, I guess I can start anytime during the year, right?~~ Didn't start yet, but I am planning on ordering my supplies this weekend.
take more photos with my "big" camera - ~~been taking it with me everywhere I go and loving it~~ I've gotten a lot better and now that the weather is warmer I will take lots more photos!
meet some bloggy friends in real life - ~~hope this will happen one day~~ Not yet, but my sweet friend Jessica from Sweet Green Tangerine just moved to a city really close to where we live here in the south of Germany and as soon as she and her family have settled in (they've had a bit of a rough start), we will definitely meet! Yay, can't wait!
do some fun craft tutorials on the blog - ~~posted a knitting pattern, but no tutorial, yet~~ No progress here.
knit at least one sweater and cardigan for Leonie - ~~sweater = check, cardigan = half way through!~~ I am still working on the sleeves of this sweater...hope to finish it soon.
re-open my Etsy shop - ~~still on vacay~~ I shut it down for now.
try to live in the moment a little more (does this count) - ~~working on this one really hard and actually making some progress!~~ Been making progress here, a lot, and it feels so good!
pick up horseback riding again - ~~again, waiting for warmer weather~~ Not yet, but a friend of mine just got 2 horses and needs a riding buddy - win win! As soon as those boys are used to the saddle I will start again!
go skydiving (been wanting to do this forever) - ~~this will happen this summer!~~ Not yet, but I already bookmarked the contact and it will definitely happen this year!
keep up the tradition of Thanksgiving with my family here in Germany - we celebrated with the ~~family~~ This will always be a holiday celebrated for us, no matter where we will live!
go back to Chicago - ~~never stop believing and working on it!~~ It's a work in progress!

I can't wait to see everyone's progress - little steps count just as much as big ones! No pressure, right!

The second slipper of the another pair of felted slippers for Leonie is well underway. I just need to knit the toe and then sew the heel together, before I can throw them into the washer to get those babies felted.

Even though the temps are slowly but surely rising, I still enjoy picking up my knitting needles at night...best way to unwind for me.

There hasn't been much going on reading wise other than finishing up "The Host", finally. I really liked the book, now I can't wait for the movies to hit theaters here in Germany. Gardening has been taking

up all my reading time this past week, gosh there are so many dandelions in our backyard.

It's like they always grow faster after weeding...haha.
