In order for something to truly die, it has to be cut off from its source of life. Which means we have to learn how to make room for the Spirit to access the deepest roots of our fleshly desires. We have to learn how to create space to be aware of where the Spirit is trying to access so we can keep up with him and let him in. And it’s going to take time, right? Change takes time. It takes time to kill this stuff that is deeply ingrained in us. And the Enemy is working to keep us living according to the flesh, so we have some resistance. What we have to do is discern where the Spirit is trying to work on us and rely on His presence and power in our daily, ordinary lives. The best practice for creating space for the Spirit to reach the roots of your heart is prayer. Remember, He lives in you. He speaks to you. So take time this week in prayer to ask him for guidance, to help you see what needs to be killed and where the source of life needs to be cut off.

And listen: this is true of religious people and nonreligious people. Republicans and democrats. We all try to legislate morality. 

Others of us love freedom, and we think our freedom can save us. We don’t want any rules. The good life is found in doing whatever I want, whenever I want. And we end up like driftwood. Religious people and nonreligious people.

The right rules can’t save us, but neither can the right amount of doing whatever we want. Both those paths lead to death.

We have lots questions about the Bible. Questions like: 

What I do with those parts the Bible where God seems vengeful? Can we trust that our English Bibles accurately communicate what the authors originally wrote? So what’s it about? It’s about a God who so loves outsiders. Who so pursues the people who don’t belong. Who has such a big heart for losers and outcasts, for sinners. For the people we tend to ignore or despise. A God who has so much love. That even a Moabitess from Moab can find a home. A place to belong.

And Jesus was also an outsider! He left His home. In heaven. To become a peasant, a child out of wedlock, spending the first years of His life as a refugee, eventually rejected by those He came to save, even abandoned by His closest friends, and then dying on a cross for our sins.

Paul’s desire in writing to the Romans was to prepare them for his upcoming visit, which would be a time for both Paul and the Roman Church to be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith (Rom 1:12). This was a faith that was not ashamed of the Gospel (Rom 1:16-17). Paul was also committed to going and preaching the Gospel where no one else had been: “It has always been my ambition to preach the Gospel where Christ was not known” (Rom 15:20a). This was the impetus for his desire to continue to Spain after visiting Rome (Rom 15:24).

The proclamation of the Gospel is an essential part of evangelism, along with acts of mercy and demonstrations of God’s power. Paul says in Rom 10:14-15, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?... And, how can they hear without someone preaching to them?”

This message challenges us in the 21st-century ministry that embodies the spirit of Paul’s Letter to the Romans. We will be mutually encouraged in our faith, challenged to not be ashamed of the Gospel, exhorted to go where others fear to go and have not gone and to combine proclamation of the Gospel with acts of Gospel mercy.

There are few questions that are quite as loaded and comforting as “Are you okay?” The range of responses could be “Sure” to “Not even close.”

Sin is not simply synonymous with “breaking the rules” or doing something “bad.” The Bible can use the word like that as we’ll see in a bit. But the biblical writers can also talk about sin as a power, a crouching animal that wants to devour and destroy us.
