When was the last time you were left speechless by grief, disappointment, loneliness, frustration?

Maybe you paced aimlessly: I just don’t know what to say. Maybe you struggled to know how to express your feelings, or maybe you even struggled to know what exactly it was you were feeling! Maybe you didn’t know what to pray, or how to pray, or even feel like you could pray. What are we supposed to do when we no longer have words?

Paul’s answer might surprise you. Because it’s less about what we do and more about what God does. What God is already  doing. Even when all we can do is groan, God reminds us that: We never groan alone.

Our world and our lives are in labor. And it hurts. The suffering, the agony, the tears. The trauma and the drama. But our groaning will one day give birth to glory. And somehow it will all have been worth it. Do you believe that?

Now God doesn’t say our sufferings don’t matter, that our sufferings aren’t real, that we’re just a bunch of wimps and should get over it. No. It’s not that our sufferings are so insignificant. It’s that the glory that is coming is just so great. So immense. That it’s not even worth comparing.

God sees you. And He never minimizes our pain. Nor does He promise us a life without pain. What God promises, is a way through the pain.

 We have left God, abused his grace and run after things and idols we thought would bring happiness and belonging. But while we were a long way off God ran after us, hugged us, kissed us, and welcomed us home. He has clothed us and thrown a party for us. We are no longer prodigal sons and daughters. We are no longer slaves of unrighteousness. We are welcomed home as children of God. We are back in the family with a full and rich inheritance.

God loves you. He is for you. He has gone to great lengths to rescue you. He calls you his own and has gifted you with a great inheritance. Please don’t leave here today without seeing the great love God has for you.

There is a freedom that comes from God’s Spirit, that you just can’t get anywhere else. But we tend to define freedom as the ability to do whatever I want. To fulfill my desires, whatever those desires are. But that’s not real freedom because those desires so often hurt ourselves and others.

Real freedom. The freedom God offers us. Is the freedom to do what will actually satisfy. Freedom to do what is good, loving, and beautiful. 

And we know this! We want this! Whether you’re a Christian or not, whether you’re religious or not, we know that a life lived loving others is better than a life loving only ourselves and our desires.

I believe this is the best news you can hear. But I struggle to remember and believe that myself. 

My assumption is that there are at least three types of people in this room. 

Those that do not find this as great news because we don’t think we are actually bad enough to deserve condemnation in the first place

Those that believe this is good news but we forget about it and live as if it does not matter

And those that do not find this to be good news because we don’t believe it could be true. We have messed up too much. We are too big of failures. We know our brokenness and it is too great. 

This means that this morning we have our work cut out for us.

For some the empty tomb is just a harmless story and myth, kinda like the Easter bunny. For others, it was a story of deliberate deceit used to hide the truth and deceive millions. And for some of us this is the most important story in existence. It's the true story of the day we say “the tomb is empty because He is Risen! He has Risen Indeed.

Let me ask “What do you see when you look at the empty tomb?”

I ask this question because your answer matters greatly. Now, regardless of your answer I am so glad you are here but for 2,000 years Christians have gathered, not just on Easter, but on Every Sunday to celebrate Resurrection Sunday. Because what we see when we look at the empty tomb matters!

Some of us, if we’re honest, believe: the rules can save us. If we just follow the right rules, enact the right laws, educate our kids the right ways, we’ll make the good life. And listen: this is true of religious people and nonreligious people. Republicans and democrats. We all try to legislate morality. 

Others of us love freedom, and we think our freedom can save us. We don’t want any rules. The good life is found in doing whatever I want, whenever I want. And we end up like driftwood. Religious people and nonreligious people.

The right rules can’t save us, but neither can the right amount of doing whatever we want. Both those paths lead to death.

We all have this desire to belong.  And it's a good desire, it is what we were made for. But what about those times when we don’t feel like we belong? Or what about those times when we are seeking to belong in a place that would not lead to our flourishing. I'm sure many of us have experienced both. But I am sure we have all been there. We were created to belong. Each of these temporary places of belonging have the potential to point us to our ultimate need of belonging. And in our passage today in Romans 7, Paul is seeking to remind the church in Rome of where their ultimate belonging is and what that belonging means for their life.

We live in a country and society founded upon the idea that life and happiness are the fruit of freedom. This is different from other countries around the world but we love our freedom. Freedom to be who we want, do what we want, and live however we want. But does our freedom actually give us life and happiness? Jesus Himself makes it clear. Some will go to heaven. And some will go to hell. At the very thought of that, many of us have issues.

Our imaginations have been tainted, but more than that, we really struggle to believe that God could punish evil so severely. I mean, maybe for the really wicked people. But what about my friends at school, work, our neighborhoods? Do we still believe in hell?

“I used to go to church and pray, and then my best friend got sick and died… How can I believe in God when that happened?” My friend told me this in 7th grade, and it would be the first but not last time I would hear what I would later learn that theologians and philosophers call “the problem of evil”. Why has the Christmas story lasted so long? Mary was a nobody from nowhere with nothing to offer. Her claim of being the mother of God was offensive to others and dangerous to her. So what’s it about? It’s about a God who so loves outsiders. Who so pursues the people who don’t belong. Who has such a big heart for losers and outcasts, for sinners. For the people we tend to ignore or despise. A God who has so much love. That even a Moabitess from Moab can find a home. A place to belong.

And Jesus was also an outsider! He left His home. In heaven. To become a peasant, a child out of wedlock, spending the first years of His life as a refugee, eventually rejected by those He came to save, even abandoned by His closest friends, and then dying on a cross for our sins.

It’s not something we like to think about or talk about but the greatest certainty in life is that everybody dies. Sure, modern medicine and skin products help us live longer and look young but the death rate is still 100%. Everybody dies. But today we are going to look at what is more certain than death. Today we are going to see what is greater than sin.

Sin is not our bad habits that we don’t like about ourselves, it’s our master outside of Jesus and its rule is death. It's the reason I have the ability to do so much damage with my words. It is the reason I am so often quick to treat people with condescension, it's the reason for the shadow mission of our good deeds. We say things about our spouse in public to look like a good spouse but at home we're at each other’s throats, it’s why I have the ability to let a sports team, a meal, or a paycheck have more impact over my emotions than the needs and concerns of others. Humanity is born under the reign of sin and death, this was not how it ought to be but currently is. So what can be done about this?

At the core of each one of us, is this longing to be loved. And this unmistakable sense that maybe no one does. Or maybe ever will. To be loved we have to be known. But how could anyone who knows me, really knows me, actually love me? 

Or maybe it’s when you’re in a season in which it feels like everything's falling apart. You just can’t seem to catch a break. You’re exhausted, overwhelmed, afraid and alone. God, do you love me, or not?

And yet, according to the Apostle Paul. You might doubt a lot of things. But You never have to doubt God’s love.
