The Fr. Lee A. Selzer Newman Center
Welcome! The Fr. Lee A. Selzer Newman Center at the Citadel extends its our warmest greetings to all of our cadets and their families. Our dedicated team of volunteers, cadets, and campus ministers are committed to the mission of the Catholic Church in speading the Gospel and working towards bringing others to Jesus Christ. Our campus ministry is open to everyone, especially to those cadets who are Catholic or are considering becoming Catholic. During the week we hold a series of ministry events that explore our Catholic faith and open our understanding of Sacred Scripture in its importance. We're here to assist, help and console as Jesus did for those who sought him. We are a resource for everyone who wishes to know more about the Catholic Church and we hope you will join us in our celebration and the deepening our of understanding of Catholicism. God bless!
Office Hours
The Fr. Lee A. Selzer Newman Center is located on campus, room 350 in Mark Clark Hall. Office times vary throughout the week: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:00am to 4:00pm. Tuesday, 10:00am to 4:00pm, and Friday, 10:00am to 2:00pm. Appointments may be arranged by phone at the Office number: 843.953.7693.
Weekly Ministry Events
All cadets are welcome to attend a series of ministry events the Newman Center holds weekly. On Monday evenings, the mass is celebrated with the Catholic Chaplain, with dinner following. If mass is not offered, then either confession are heard, adoration is offered, or another type of ministry is made available.
On Thursday evenings, the Newman Center holds a series of talks that discuss the many aspects of Catholicism and what make it unquie amongst Christian denominations. These topics range from the definition of evil, to the Catholic understanding of the sacraments.
All of our meetings are filled with fellowship, fun, good food, and most importantly, the sharing of our Catholic Faith. Meetings are held in either the Pipe Band Rehearsal Room, or in the River View Room in Coward Mess Hall.
Catholic Campus Minister's Office
The first year at the Citadel can be a difficult one, and the Fr. Lee A. Selzer Newman Center offers a variety of resources to make it a little more tolerable. On the third floor of Mark Clark Hall, room 350, we provide an environment that allows the cadets to grab a snack, relax, and even spend time with Jesus in the Mary, the Immaculate Conception Chapel. This resource is open to everyone and all are invited.
SUNDAY MASS OBLIGATION
All baptized and confirmed Catholics are obligated to attend Sunday Mass. It is both a precept of the Church and Church law that Catholics must worship God on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation by participating in the Holy Mass. This follows from the fact that in the Mass it is Christ Himself who worships the Father, joining our worship to His. In no other way is it possible to adequately give thanks (eucharistia) to God for the blessings of creation, redemption and our sanctification than by uniting our offerings to that of Jesus Christ Himself. Following the example of the Old Covenant the Church does this weekly, on the day of the Lord's Resurrection. Since a "grave cause" is needed to excuse one from this obligation it would be a serious or mortal sin to willfully skip Mass on Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation, as the Church has always taught. Reasons such as the necessity to work to support one's family, child care, personal sickness or the care of the sick, necessary travel etc. would excuse a person on a particular occasion. Those who have continuing reason to be excused should consult their pastor. This Sunday Mass obligation can not be fulfilled at a service of any other Christian denomination. Catholics are not to receive communion at Protestant services of any kind.
