A guest brought a wooden carving of an eagle to the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow that had been bought by his son-in-law at a junk shop near York. The guest admitted that he didn’t like the carving, but was surprised to learn its value.

Cristian Beadman, the antiques expert, said that the carving was made in Brienz, a town in Switzerland that, in the 19th and 20th centuries, was famous for producing animal carvings from linden wood. During a famine in 1815, when farmers were short of products to sell, carvers sourced local timber to create souvenir carvings, which raised money to support the local community.

Beadman said that the eagle was a fine example of a Brienz carving:

“The naturalism of the feathers, the way the wind is lifting them. It’s in almost perfect condition. It’s a beautiful colour, beautifully carved, pretty good condition.”

When asked about what he thought of the carving, the guest said that he admired the workmanship of it but did not like it, though his son-in-law was fond of it. When asked by the expert how much his son-in-law had paid for the carving, he said £76. Beadman then surprised the guest by valuing the carving between £5,000 and £10,000.

It’s perhaps unlikely that you’ll purchase an antique from a Lancashire antique dealer for less than £100 that you can later sell for thousands. However, you will find many fine antique desks, sofas and chairs that you won’t have to pay thousands of pounds for.

Not all antiques have to be in top condition to be valuable, as highlighted in an episode of the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.

A woman brought a damaged vase to the television programme in Christchurch Park, Ipswich. The Chinese porcelain vase decorated with flowers and a blue dragon, and it was inherited from the woman’s parents. It was not in a pristine condition, as it had a crack at the base and a few stains. She thought that, because of its poor condition, it was only worth between £30 and £50. However, it was valued between £30,000 to £50,000, and the woman was so stunned when she found out that she cried.

Alexandra Aguilar Doméracki, the antique expert who valued the vase, said:

“I am sorry. I did not want to make you cry.”

The expert then explained that, if the vase had not been damaged, it would probably be worth £2 million to £4 million. Commentators on the episode urged the owner of the vase not to drop it and recommended that she upgrade her home contents insurance cover.

If you spot damaged items, such as antique dining tables , desks and sofas, at Lancashire antique dealers, expect to pay less than for undamaged antiques. It may not be practical to mend a stained and cracked Chinese vase, but most furniture can be restored to look undamaged. Sofas and chaise tongues can be reupholstered if worn. However, use a professional antique restorer, as it is a highly skilled job.

Some antiques sold by British antique dealers are imported from EU countries. Since Brexit, importing has become more difficult due to the extra paperwork required. However, this difficulty is not expected to last.

The British Antique Dealers’ Association’s Director of Strategy and Operations, Kathryn Singer, recognises the disruption to the antiques trade, but she told the Guardian that she expects that, as shippers and dealers get used to the regulations, the trade will “return to normal”.

Before Brexit, any trader could visit an EU country, purchase antiques and freely bring them back to the UK with no additional costs. Since Brexit, second-hand goods purchased in Europe have to be declared at customs and import taxes may be charged. Documentation is required for each imported item.

Some dealers are apprehensive about importing antiques from Europe and believe that the regulations will badly affect their business. Singer disagrees and believes that, as shippers and dealers in the UK and the EU get used to filling in the required documents, they will continue selling antiques sourced from Europe. There are freight forwarders that will take care of the importation procedures for antique dealers.

The HMRC has a guide on the regulations on the gov.uk website.

It is not expected that Lancashire antique dealers will have a shortage of items to sell. If, for example, you are looking for a French ormolu mounted cabinet, you should find one at a Lancashire antique dealer. There’s no need to go to France and be faced with lengthy delays as customs officers check your import documentation.

Amsterdam antique dealer Aronson has created a digital rendered version of a Delftware tulip vase made in the 17th century and hopes to sell it as an NFT.

NFT is digital art that includes videos, music, images and drawings. Each NFT is unique and its owners own the copyright to ensure that the art cannot be copied. The copyright owner is secured by blockchain technology that is similar to the system that allows bitcoin currency to be held and traded.

Antique dealer Robert Aronson claims that this is the first time that a digital representation of an antique has been sold as an NFT.

The original vase was rendered using 3D-software technology. It’s not an exact replica as it has been altered with a reference to the lockdown in red letters which say:

“How much longer?”

The image is titled Locked Down and is being auctioned. The reserve price is £1300, which is a lot cheaper than buying a Delftware vase, but some may think that it is a lot to pay for a virtual antique. The original Delftware vase is on sale for £107,000.

It is doubtful whether Lancashire antique buyers would settle for a virtual copy of antiques, even if the price is considerably less than the real thing. Fortunately, there are plenty of genuine antiques, including antique chairs, cupboards and chests for sale by Lancashire antique dealers. You don’t need a smartphone or laptop to enjoy real antiques, simply place in your home and admire.

In a recent Instagram picture, Princess Anne was seen in the living room of her home at Gatcombe Park. Fans of royalty see this image as proof that Princess Anne is a fan of maximalism, which is forecast to be one of 2021’s biggest interior design trends.

Maximalism is the opposite of minimalism, the latter of which features rooms with few objects, modern furniture and no decoration features. Maximalism lovers, on the other hand, like ornate antique furniture and fill their rooms with objects. Princess Anne’s room is full of vintage ornaments, photo frames, books and memorabilia associated with her love for horse riding.

People have been spending more time at home during the coronavirus lockdowns and have been experimenting with interior design ideas. Many prefer bold and colourful patterns and want to surround themselves with objects. Speaking to Express.co.uk, interior design expert Kate Beavis said:

“We have spent so much time in our homes recently, with many people having more time on their hands to look at Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration. I feel they have wanted to make it a warm and inviting place, hence investing in more pieces.”

If maximalism appeals to you, visit Lancashire antique dealers for antique desks, chests, sofas and other antiques. They also sell clocks, jars, ornaments and other objects to fill your rooms with interesting objects. Beavis also recommends adding items that have sentimental value or bring back fond memories.

Thousands of items from the late Annie Marchant’s kitchenalia collection, which is worth £100,000, are now being sold.

The majority of antique furniture is bought for living rooms and bedrooms, but there are a growing number of collectors of “kitchenalia”, which are antiques associated with the kitchen. Marchant, from Wingham Canterbury, was an antique dealer who specialised in selling antique items for kitchens, along with dairy antiques. She also had a large private collection, which is now being sold for an estimated value of £100,000.

Among the items being sold are a Welsh dresser, wood shelving, food preparation tables and wooden chairs. Many of these items were originally kept in her kitchen. Marchant’s friend, Hugh Darrah, said in her obituary in the Guardian newspaper that:

“To enter the kitchen of Annie’s farmhouse home was to move into an older, timeless world; a better world, indeed, of scrubbed pine, old kitchen equipment glinting in the candlelight, a hunting dog.”

Darrah said that cats would be curled up on every surface, and that her home had no electricity or modern appliances. There wasn’t even a radio – only the sounds of a kettle and a clock.

However, if you’re interested in antiques, there’s no need to throw away your radio and microwave – you don’t have to turn your back on the modern world like Marchant to enjoy kitchenalia. You’ll find a selection of antique kitchen chairs, shelves, tables, dressers, chests and more at local Lancashire antique dealers.

A success story of lockdown is the revival of interest in antique furniture, which has been fuelled by environmental concerns.

People have been spending more time at home during the coronavirus lockdown and have been re-evaluating their attitude toward furniture. There has been a trend in recent years of furnishing homes with cheap flat-pack furniture that has to be replaced after a few years, with the old furniture dumped in landfills. It is usually not practical to mend cheap broken furniture. Making new furniture has an environmental impact, as it requires energy and resources.

Speaking to The Irish Times, antiques expert Niall Mullen said:

“The disposable furniture market is a dangerous route if you believe we are on the wrong path environmentally.”

Mullen pointed out that the carbon footprint of a Georgian chest of drawers is 16 times less than that of a new one.

Rather than buy disposable items, however, householders are increasingly buying better quality items that last. Antique furniture may be expensive, but it was built to be durable. Furniture that has survived in good condition for a hundred years or more will last many decades into the future. Fine antique furniture is made from solid wood that can be restored if damaged or worn.

Buying antiques is an investment in a piece of history. Each item has a story to tell about past times. Start your antique furniture collection with one or two quality items. Visit a local Lancashire antique dealer, where you will see fine examples of antique chests, chairs, desks, sofas and much more.

Antique furniture expert Amelia Walker is not surprised by the increased demand for Regency furniture. Speaking to Tatler, she said she has noticed that every time a period drama is popular on television, it makes antiques from the period it was set in more popular. She cited Pride and Prejudice from the 1990s and the more recent Downton Abbey as examples of successful period television dramas that influenced antique buyers.

Bridgerton was filmed at various stately home locations in Britain. Although the storylines are fictional, the rooms in which it was filmed feature genuine antiques and art from the Regency period.

Regency furniture often features carved motifs inspired by Egyptian and Chinese design. Timbers tend to be dark and rich, and brass inlays and bronze mounts feature on many pieces. Champagne was popular in the period, with ornate wine coolers made to keep the Champagne bottles chilled.

Fine Regency furniture can be expensive, and buyers can expect to pay several thousand pounds for quality antique coffee tables and chairs. However, Regency furniture was made to last by skilled craftsmen, making it a good long-term investment.

A woman from County Durham has shared with her online followers how she converted an antique Singer sewing machine into a bathroom sink.

Laura Barrass bought the old sewing machine on eBay for £100, and then she spent a month preparing it by sanding and cleaning it. Her father-in-law stained and oiled the wooden parts, and the base, which is made of metal, was sandblasted to remove the peeling paint. A bathroom fitter then installed a sink on the top.

Barrass was extremely pleased with her sink, and said to Jam Press:

“I absolutely love the finished result and am so pleased we managed to pull it off, I’ve always wanted to use an old piece of furniture for the sink unit in my bathroom as I am really keen on antique furniture.”

In her Facebook post, which featured pictures of the sink, Barrass said that the project cost much less than buying and installing a modern sink unit. Her post has received over 13,000 likes and 1,500 comments. Some fans said the sink looks “stunning” and “outstanding”.

Barrass said she plans to undertake more upcycling projects.

Low-value antiques that are not in a good condition can benefit from restoration and re-purposing. It is not recommended that they be altered to serve another function. For example, a Victorian mahogany dining table may benefit from being polished, but converting it from a table to a piece of bathroom furniture is not wise.

A guest on the BBC television program Antiques Roadshow was stunned at the valuation of a replica silver shield.

Many people presume that a replica is worth very little, but a recent episode of Antiques Roadshow showed that this is not always the case.

A guest came to the filming of the show at Bodnant Gardens in North Wales with a silver shield depicting a scene from Milton’s Paradise Lost. It was a copy of the original, which is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. She did not think that it was worth much, and she told expert Duncan Campbell that it was a family heirloom passed onto her by her grandfather when he moved abroad.

Campbell said that hundreds of copies were made of the shield, which are identical to the original, apart from a small shield on the back that marks it as a copy. The original shield was made by Elkington & Co in 1866. It depicts the Archangel Gabriel with Adam and Eve, and it also includes zodiac signs.

If the shield was cleaned up and put on sale at an auction, Duncan expected that the shield would fetch around £10,000. The guest’s mouth opened in shock, and she said:

“Wow. I did not see that coming.”

Despite the high valuation, she said that she would not sell it.

The manufacturers of antique desks and other fine furniture, which are sold by Lancashire antique dealers, often made several items of the same design. Alike the Paradise Lost replica shields, each piece was meticulously made by master craftsmen.
