I just got back from my monthly shopping bonanza at the West Hollywood location (i.e., Targay), where I seldom get out for under $200. Forget the AIR WICK® Scented Oil X-Press™, which features "continuous fragrance plus an extra boost." Forget the method® foaming handwash, eucalyptus mint scent. I'm talking about Target's mind-blowing array of men's clothes. Bearing in mind that I inherited the bargain-shopping gene from my mom, I'm always on the hunt for value. Target blows them all away: Old Navy, Out of the Closet, Crossroads. I got a leather jacket (no doubt made by three-year-0ld Chinese orphans with missing fingers) for the ridiculous price of $120. I should probably feel guilty, but I don't, being a limousine liberal and all. She truly is one of my heroes. I am fortunate enough to have dinner at her place almost every Wednesday, and she's still going strong at 91. She graduated from USC in 1935 when she was only 19, then started at USC Law School. She met my grandfather, a widower with two young daughters. Overnight, she became a wife and mother, having just started law school, at the age of 19. She practiced law with my grandfather in his private practice, arguing cases all the way to the California Supreme Court. She was the first woman selected as president of the USC Alumni Association, then served on USC's Board of Trustees for 20 years. Truly an inspiration!

The End of Coulter-geist?

Ann Coulter, the nutwing everyone loves to hate, has managed to get herself in hot water. Coincidentally, it involves alleged voting fraud in Palm Beach County, Florida. Sound familiar? Remember, that's the place where tons of retirees "voted" for Pat Buchanan in 2000. Turns out Ms. C. may have voted in the wrong precint; specifically, she listed her realtor's address as her own. And, naturally, she's refusing to cooperate with the investigation. I remember when he was a sportscaster on the local news here in L.A., and was so glad to find out he's "one of us." His frequent "Special Commentaries" are the reincarnation of Edward R. Murrow, down to the signoff, "Good night, and good luck." This guy is the thinking man's response to Bill O'Reilly. His no-holds-barred, but fair, attacks on Republican cronyism are exactly what we left-leaning Americans have been wanting. Check out his show.

A Very WeHo Halloween

One of the advantages of living in the middle of West Hollywood is that I never having to find parking for the Halloween Carnaval or Pride. My roommate Tiffani and I decided to venture down Santa Monica Blvd. and take in the sights. There seemed to be an awful lot of Borat costumes; I counted at least half a dozen. We even ran into a real-life dominatrix. But my favorite was the guy dressed up as Satan (a.k.a. Dick Cheney's 2008 running mate).
