Arian Franz of The Greater Goods hired me to shoot a lookbook for her amazing, all-natural, handmade soaps. It was so.much.fun! I want to do it again. Here's an iPhone snapshot preview (edited with VSCO Cam).

Yossy Arefi for Pantry Confidential

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Thu, 12 Dec 2013 20:59:00 +0000

This lady and her home = calm, beauty, and elegant order. Yossy Arefi, who is a photographer, food stylist, baker, and blogger, was a quiet pleasure to photograph.

See what else is in Yossy's kitchen (hint: beautiful Persian essentials plus more gratuitous pie shots) over at Pantry Confidential!

VSCO Grid Feature

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Wed, 27 Nov 2013 21:27:00 +0000

The fine folks at VSCO featured my mobile photography today! VSCO is my go-to for editing images for both my iPhone pics and my big professional camera pics. Their aesthetic is clean, simple, and beautiful. I'm flattered they like my Grid! Check it out. It's my visual diary of everyday beauty as well as far-flung travels, like this Icelandic scene below. It's amazing what you can do with your iPhone these days!

Two good interviews and a photographic reversal of the male gaze

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Thu, 07 Nov 2013 17:50:00 +0000

1. Platon talks about turning his lens away from the powerful and onto the truly courageous, plus on what it takes to succeed as a commercial photographer.

2. Andrea Gentl, whose food + travel photography is out of this world, talks about what inspires her (the small things!) and shares her favorite places to eat, drink, and shop in NYC.

3. Hannah Price turns her camera onto the men who catcall her. Loved this series on reversing the power of the male gaze.

Stéphane Hubert Design for Madesmith

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Thu, 26 Sep 2013 15:17:00 +0000

This couple, their story, the wood, the textures and colors...I was completely taken. Sometimes the photo gods give you a gift, and this was one of those times :) For the full story and to purchase Stéphane's amazing pieces, visit Madesmith.

{Engaged} Maggi + Alex, Brooklyn, NY

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Tue, 10 Sep 2013 00:02:00 +0000

Those who cook together, stay together.

These two requested "no kissing under cherry trees." I said, "no problem." We decided to shoot a 'normal' Sunday afternoon instead where they would make brunch and just hang out at home. I absolutely loved the way it turned out. I got to photograph food AND love in one beautiful combination. I want to do this more. Couples out there who like to cook or garden or otherwise create something together, please get in touch with me!

The prettiest detritus

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Tue, 13 Aug 2013 22:48:00 +0000

One of my favorite images lately...a common tabletop scene for the farmer-apprentices at UC Santa Cruz's farm school (aka "The Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems" or CASFS). Normally, I do quite a bit of "styling" but I barely touched a thing to make this image. Maybe I pushed an apple over a centimeter or so, but that's it. This is just what the communal table looked like post-lunch.

Shot with my iPhone 5 and edited with VSCO cam.

Gamma Folk for Madesmith

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Mon, 12 Aug 2013 15:11:00 +0000

I had the pleasure of photographing designer Lily Piyathaiserie of Gamma Folk for Madesmith. Her studio (like Marble + Milkweed's) is right up my aesthetic alley: light-filled, neat, and colorful! I loved encountering all the thoughtfully-organized mini still-lifes in her studio.

Lily is a color and texture genius. I absolutely love her fiber jewelry. It's fun and sophisticated, playful and edgy all at the same time. I hope you enjoy viewing her studio and work as much as I did!

Be sure to read Lily's thoughtful interview and check out her work over on Madesmith! Any of her pieces would make a great gift for a stylish friend.

Get Fresh

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Thu, 25 Jul 2013 14:00:00 +0000

I really dig this photo! Marissa of Nourish Kitchen + Table wanted to create an edgy still life with some of the products she would be selling at her brand new shop. We got to work and came up with this, which I love.

It looks great as a postcard with her logo on it.

That same day we also shot this beautiful watermelon radish salad, which she made and style for her shop's "Get Fresh" postcard and for Q by Equinox's Summer Salad Series (excuse the less-than-perfect scan).

Summer Salads for Nourish K+T and Equinox

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Tue, 23 Jul 2013 01:00:00 +0000

It's been HOT. I miss those lazy summer days when all I did was ride my bike to get an ice cream cone from Baskin Robbins with my saved up coins and dollar bills. Being a grown-up is overrated! Anyway, this heat calls for cold noodles and salads everyday (plus copious amounts of iced coffee to get through grown-up things like 'work').

Speaking of salads, Nourish Kitchen + Table collaborated with Q by Equinox to produce a Summer Salad Series, which I got to photograph! All these salads are delicious (I tasted them all, natch), and just perfect for the season. Try them out and let me know which is your favorite.

Up on Equinox's blog today is Watermelon Salad with Basil, Ricotta Salata, and Red Onion. The salty-sweet combo is totally refreshing.

The last three weeks featured:

Steak Salad with Asparagus

Quinoa Salad with English Peas

Watermelon Radish and Beet Salad

Old things and beautiful women

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Thu, 13 Jun 2013 17:32:00 +0000

Old things and beautiful women never fail to inspire me. Our latest post for Pantry Confidential has plenty of both, which means that I had a really hard time putting my camera down at the shoot.

This is Julia V. Bainbridge, an editor at bonappetit.com.

She has incredible style, a mash-up of drool-worthy vintage and innovative boldness. Old and new, if you will.

A giant portrait of her grandmother stands watch over her Brooklyn apartment, and her family's everyday china anchors any dish she cooks up for friends, including this delicious clam and chorizo number she whipped up for us.

There is plenty more JVB style and the recipe for this dish over at Pantry Confidential. You don't want to miss it.

iPhone, you impress me

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Mon, 10 Jun 2013 18:41:00 +0000

While my husband prepped this dry rub mixture for his bbq ribs over the weekend, I snapped this with my iPhone 5 and used the "Hollow" filter in the Afterlight app. Voila! Easy food art.

Tips:
1. Style the already beautiful mess. I added a scoop of the finished rub mixture and the tablespoon to the surface.
2. Move the whole beautiful mess next to some good window light.
3. Get overhead and really close with your iPhone and hold steady while taking the photo (breathe out, then snap).

Marble + Milkweed for Madesmith

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Wed, 05 Jun 2013 18:53:00 +0000

This is Briar Winters of Marble & Milkweed, in her Tribeca studio. I photographed her for Madesmith, whose mission is to "buy less, buy well." It's exciting to work with people whose work you can really stand behind! I'm honored to join Madesmith in telling these artisans' stories and connecting them to the community at large.

To be honest with you, I am neither a tea-drinker nor a beauty product consumer. I'm sure my skin is crying for all the anti-oxidants and such that I am not getting...but I think Marble & Milkweed could change my behavior. When I first encountered Briar Winters' concoctions, I nearly fell over because they smelled so good. I was unprepared, as I tend to think skincare products are boring (don't hate me!). I was there to photograph her and her studio for Madesmith and had just asked her to demonstrate her process of creating one of her products so that I could shoot it. Without much thought, I smelled it, and WHAM! My senses stopped in their tracks and transported me to some enchanted forest full of nostalgia and calm...

The particular concoction I got to smell had been a year in the works, and she was still perfecting it, as if it wasn't magical enough. But that's the kind of meticulous thought and care that Briar puts into every single thing she makes.

And her tea. Oh my. You will not encounter a more visually-pleasing mixture. As pretty as it is, its looks are second to its aroma. Too bad #smellovision isn't real or you could put your nose right in there...it's enough to make this hardcore coffee drinker reconsider...

Head on over to Madesmith to read Briar's interview and buy one of her elixirs. They make great gifts (hint hint). Who wouldn't want to feel like they've fallen into a soft bed of flowers in the middle of a cool and quiet forest?

"Crazy things should happen in the bathroom"

Happy Mother's Day to all the mamas out there!

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Sun, 12 May 2013 11:30:00 +0000

I don't know how all you moms do it. Hats off to you...
and a special shout-out to our Korean mothers who immigrated to the States and raised their kids here. You deserve a monument.

T and C went to Korea, Part 1: Family

noreply@blogger.com (Christine Han) — Mon, 29 Apr 2013 14:00:00 +0000

Back in January, Tocha and I made the pilgrimage to Korea for my maternal grandmother's 80th birthday. We had an amazing trip. Below is T's "amazed" face. He's standing on a mountaintop in Seoraksan National Park.

For a brief moment, my mom, my grandma, and me were together in one place.

What you see here is one of the best meals of my life. Everything on the table was prepared by my grandmother. It was breakfast. It was beautiful! You simply can't beat this.

We stayed with my 고모 (aunt on my father's side) and her husband, my 고무부, who are special to me. They loved me when I was a baby, kept in touch throughout the years, and were the only ones from Korea to make it to our wedding in New York. Here they are, graciously standing just so in the beautiful light for me.

And here they were as newlyweds in the early 80's (photo by my uncle, I think).

Aside from my parents and my sister, my entire family lives in Korea. We grew up in the States pretty much isolated from extended family, so it was quite the experience to meet them again in adulthood. Seeing yourself in your aunts and uncles is striking--little pieces of them that somehow are in you even though you grew up without knowing them. Genes and family ties are miraculously strong! For better or for worse...

Here's my grandmother surrounded by her daughters.

As overwhelming as it can be to meet the entire clan of in-laws, Tocha did well. They were amazed that he happily ate everything that was put in front of him. Guys, if you're meeting Koreans for the first time, they will adore you if you love their food. Also, they will try to stuff you silly so watch out. Here is T with grandma.

It was a relatively short trip in the middle of a very cold winter, but we were able to get around a bit. These are iPhone snaps (no filter on the first two!) of an excursion to Seoraksan National Park in Gangwon-do, northeast of Seoul.

So...I had no idea Korea was this beautiful. Did you? Should I be ashamed? I am a little bit, but my memories of the place were from childhood, when I was too immature to appreciate any of it and the kids made fun of me because I was American.

I did, however, suspect that the food would be amazing and interesting. For sure, it was. The anthropologist/food-nerd in me was totally inspired! Stay tuned...and thanks for reading!
