Time out & under construction… Tue, 12 Feb 2013 12:16:37 +0000 If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you would have realised the past few months have been a bit quiet on this side. Well, I’m happy to let you know I’m still shooting and keeping busy :) But I’ve realised that my website is no longer a good representative of my work, style and brand.

In the past 6 months, I’ve re-designed my logo and launched my personal blog For now, this blog and website will no longer be in use, until I re-launch my new photographic website. We’re working on it behind the scenes and hope to have it up in the next few months ;)

Magnolia Rouge Magazine Fri, 18 Jan 2013 07:31:20 +0000

Last year I did a wedding photography workshop in London with a group of really fun girls. We had a great time chatting about business, what their struggles were, what they dreamt of doing and how we were going to make it all better. Then we set out on a little styled shoot, with gorgeous styling done by Louise from B.Loved Styling in London. I’ve never blogged these images, because a little birdie told me they *just might* appear in the newest edition of Magnolia Rouge. And so they did. Thanks Kate for featuring me in this issue! What an honour!

A portrait session, high school and a reunion. Tue, 11 Dec 2012 14:50:10 +0000 I attended Bloemhof Girls School from 1998 – 2002. And since we lived in Somerset West, my high school years were spent between Somerset West and Stellenbosch. It’s probably a total cliché to say I can’t believe time goes by so quickly, but a few weeks back we celebrated our 10 year reunion. Can you believe it?? It’s that time where everyone asks you what you did and what you’re currently up to. Funny enough, I think Facebook has filled in a lot of those gaps, since we left school.

A week after the reunion I photographed Leandri, a matric student from Stellenbosch High School. It’s only once we started chatting about her matric exam and what she planned on doing next year, that it’s hit me in the face. I was totally shocked at the fact that this girl standing in front of me was TEN YEARS younger than me! Funny how I saw people growing up all around me, but never realised I’m getting older too. Not that age has anything to do with how I approach life, but it’s just a funny though. I never realised I’m getting older too. LOL. Probably time to look in the mirror. Or perhaps not :)

We all grow older. Another year is gone and 2013 is looking at us around the corner. Even though time passes by really quickly (and even more so, as you grow older), the one question I want to say ‘YES’ to each year, is “Do you live life to the MAX?“.

I need a PA | Opportunity Sun, 09 Dec 2012 21:38:35 +0000 I’ve been trying to avoid the fact that I need to write this blog post for a few weeks now. I’m secretly hoping I don’t need to say goodbye to Candice for a few months next year. I really don’t want her to go. She is going to be an amazing mother, that I can tell you for sure. She basically mothers me every day. Honestly. I use to think I was GREAT at time management, planning and admin. Until she stepped in.

It’s been a bit more than two years now and my life completely changed. Candice comes in every morning at 8:30am. She’s always friendly. Never in a mood and she greets me every morning with a delicious Latte. Yes Latte! Every now and then I get a sms that reads: “Should I stop for some milk or bread on the way to the office? I think you ran out yesterday”. And that’s when I know she takes her job serious. She is much more than a PA. She’s a great friend. She’s a time manager. She thinks ahead. She keeps me on time and she manages everything while I’m on the road.

I’m literally dreading the thought of not having her around for four months next year, but she’s becoming a mommy and that’s much more important that  running my schedule, I know :)

Gustav & Eretia | Kleinevalleij Fri, 07 Dec 2012 14:00:33 +0000 Many happy memories come back to mind when I shoot at this location. Our wedding venue. A little over two years ago, I walked down the aisle at this very same place, Kleinevalleij.

Eretia and I go way back. Some years ago, I walked into her at a wedding. I couldn’t believe the girl I was friends with when I was 6 years old, was standing in front of me. Eretia and I met in primary school, after a few years she and her family moved to Malaysia and we never really kept in touch. Then one day I saw her again though a mutual friend’s wedding. We be-friended each other on Facebook and when they got engaged, she asked me to shoot their wedding :)

Some of my favourite pics are the ones with the totally cute orange car! The car was actually a little luck, it was Ian from Vision on Fire’s assistant’s car. Love, love, love it! :) Thanks for allowing us to use it!

Christoph & Melody | Grootbos Wed, 05 Dec 2012 15:08:47 +0000

We arrived at Grootbos at about 14:00. We walked into their room and I saw Alicia finishing up Melody’s hair and make-up. Christoph was standing outside, admiring the gorgeous view. There was a feeling in the air that I really liked. Relaxed, comfortable and real. Nothing makes me more excited than a couple that are down to earth, friendly and 100% approachable. And that’s exactly what I experienced with Christoph and Melody.

The two of them live in Germany, but decided to have their wedding here in South Africa.

We drove to the private beach and it was nothing less than magical. We saw the beach down below and on the horizon were a few friendly whales waving in our direction. (seriously, Nadia I spotted them specially for you ;)

Now I have to confess, without my amazing ‘reflector master’ and husband Iaan, I would have struggled to get these portraits in the direct sun. But with Iaan’s help, I managed to get quite a few nice ones :) Thanks Alicia for sending over the fun behind the scene shots of me lying on the beach to get the ‘right’ angle :)

Some behind the scenes :D

Lize & Deon | Pretoria Country Club Tue, 13 Nov 2012 07:13:03 +0000 I didn’t know what to expect. They told me there was going to be many tears, but that’s all I knew. She didn’t know I was coming. The secret was very well-kept, between her mother and her boss, Andre. Earlier that week, they told her sisters. But they were sworn to secrecy.

Andre was the master mind behind all of this. He contacted me months ago asking whether I’d be available for the 6th of October. I was. So he booked me. But I wasn’t allowed to say anything or even add their names to my online calendar. Nothing was allowed to leak out. I had to communicate via secret text messages and a few emails at specific times, where Lize wouldn’t check her mom’s computer. This was huge. I was booked to shoot Lize and Deon’s wedding in Pretoria, without them knowing. Something I haven’t done before.

When Iaan and I arrived at the airport, Lize’s one sister was there to pick us up. She told us the whole story. Lize has been a fan of my work for a long time. She works for Andre and he knew about Lize’s love from The Pretty Blog, as well as my work. So he decided to book me as a gift to them. The questions you probably have, is who did she think was going to shoot her wedding? Well, Andre is also a photographer, so he offered to photograph their wedding for them. Little did he she know he had other plans.

Apparently, Andre and Lize’s mom had been messing with her the week before, regarding the assistant that was coming to help out at her wedding. She wanted to know who it was going to be and Andre just said it was a girl from the local photo collage. Lize didn’t like the idea, but this gave them a bit of ammunition,  to bring in some tention about the photography. Poor Lize was totally stressed out, but then the master plan was revealed.

The morning of the wedding Andre and I went to Lize’s room. Andre walked in. I waited outside. She had no idea.

Andre greeted everyone and then he mentioned that he wants to introduce her to the assistant that will come and take photos while she gets dressed. I walked in. My heart was racing. What if she doesn’t like the idea??! My emotions were high. But I kept them in tact. In front of me stood lots of girls. I had no idea which one was the bride. But then I knew. She couldn’t believe it. Once she started crying I couldn’t hold back my tears either. It was a beautiful moment I will never forget. Lize was excited and so was I.

Walking out of the room with Andre and Iaan, I realised that this moment was bigger than just a nice surprise. It was a moment that changed my life. Andre just smiled. And then he said: ‘What would life be without moments like this’.

Iaan and I would like to thank all the people who made this weekend possible. Thank you to Lize’s family for being so welcoming. You really made us feel like part of your family. Thank you to Andre for making this possible. For being so generous and being such an awesome guy. Thanks to everyone that kept this a secret. You gave me the opportunity to be part of something that changed my life. I’m forever grateful that we met you.
