Sugar Factory- Restaurant Accessorizes the Sweets

Last night was the grand opening of a new novelty restaurant, The Sugar Factory on Ocean Drive in South Beach. As a local business owner who frequents these restaurants/bars for my popular cocktail tour, I was invited to attend the festivities. I attended with my lead tour guide James Cubby, who is also a writer for various tourist related magazines.

The Sugar Factory, as the name denotes, screams sugar and sweets. And they know how to pop! From the shiny colored pearl gumballs, to the bedazzled shelves and yellow rubber ducks, bright and eye-catching are understatements.

So on our way upstairs, we were greeted by a Willy Wonka-esque model garnished with a giant lollipop. And that is a Candy tree to the right of me, not to be mistaken for a Christmas tree. (note to self: I want this costume for Halloween!)

But the main attraction tonight was reality celebrity, Kylie Jenner, daughter of Bruce-now-Caitlyn Jenner. Apparently the Kardashian/Jenner families are big supporters and fans of the chain. I watch very little television and I have never watched the Kardashian reality TV series but I catch updates on news and late night comedy shows given their pervasive stratospheric celebrity status.

After our red carpet pose, (click here for Grand Opening highlights) and mingling with other VIP guests, to relieve our hunger pangs, James and I escaped the paparazzi and swarm of teenagers (there to photograph the celebrity invitee, Kylie Jenner) to the restaurant. We entered from the hotel lobby. To the right was the main entrance of Sugar Factory.

Sugar Factory's Couture Pops have a reusable, plastic bedazzled stick and sucker-saving plastic top. At first I frowned then I turn to spot my bedazzled calculator even diamond covered measuring tape. I suppose I will need that couture lollipop stick after all! It's actually brilliant idea combining a simple candy to an adorned holder, like the waffle cone for the ice cream. But this is flashy, a true accessory.

Soon I learned why there are images of the Kardashian sisters throughout the candy store. They have endorsed and launched several Sugar Factory store openings.

Sugar Factory’s Couture Pops have become a celebrity favorite since their conception in 2009. Pop stars such as Britney Spears, Eva Longoria, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Drake and more have been spotted throughout the years with the candy company’s famous lollipops.

As we're dining in the restaurant, the screams heightened as Kylie Jenner entered and made her rounds through the candy section and settled at a nearby booth.

A tender 17 year old, and a natural beauty without makeup, Kylie looked like a mini Kim, the hair, makeup and the revealing dress. Kim wore a similar fitting décolleté suit on the Jimmy Kimmel show. I wish I could whisper to her to expand her wings and flex her creative muscles and develop her own style.

The dessert sampling was awkward all the way around. From her "I can't believe I'm doing this" pout expression while holding a sizzler, to her one arm constantly covering her right breast, you wondered if this was her first time wearing a revealing dress of if she feared a malfunction."Own it Kylie!"

Once the sampling was over, she perked up and photobombed a girl's selfie. Shrieks erupted.

James and I were more fascinated watching and photographing these teenagers scrambling and angling to get a photo of Kylie. Their smiles, giggles, expressions... I hope they would do the same for a smart, independently successful famous woman as well.

After our dinner, we tried to leave and were trapped. At every exit the security guard sent us to another exit only to have the next security guard tell us the same thing. Finally I insisted they pick a door to let us out. The doors opened and hundreds of faces with arms and cell phones extended clicking away. It was surreal. Instead of paper and pen extended for autographs it's all about the photo, and the possible selfie. The security guard cleared a path for us. My gosh. I actually thanked God that I was not famous. My freedom and privacy are golden.

Christine Michaels arrives in Nashville for BlogPaws

Another year gone by and another BlogPaws pet conference (related to my nonprofit for pets and blogging efforts). This year it was held in Nashville, TN. I have to say I felt like a kid going to Disney World for the first time and I had no idea why I was so excited. But then I realized this trip had all the ingredients of my favorite things-- seeing all my online pet blogging friends (we communicate year round online); attending seminars to learn new tips and techniques to improve my writing/blogging efforts; and getting to explore a new city and culture AND taking someone else's tour; a reason to go shopping; AND a reason to get into character (wear cowboy hat and boots). I love costumes and dressing up; there's something alluring about the cowboy theme--all Americana, ruggedly handsome men, songs where you can understand the lyrics, polite people...! Yes this was a great trip and a bigger surprise was in store for me towards the end!

As I paraded through the Miami airport, heads were turning. Purely for my pronounced outfit--my cowboy hat and boots were screaming "country". Homeland security officers along the walkway asked me if I were going to Texas. I said "No the other "T"--Tennessee, Nashville". "Aah yes", they nodded. As a marketing lover, Branding is my favorite role.

From the airplane on our descent into Nashville, immediately I noticed the rolling green hills, manicured lawns, and friendly smiles. Nashville oozes southern hospitality and charm and also carries a celebrity vibe given that it's home to Opryland, the greatest country singers. The ABC television series, "Nashville" is also filmed in the namesake city.

TV SERIES Nashville --

As a fan of the ABC TV series Nashville, I've come to learn a lot about the culture of the city. Country music is the heart and soul of Nashville. No bones about it!

On Thursday afternoon, a couple of blogging friends from the conference and I signed up for the bus tour of sites filmed for the TV series. Unfortunately the Ryman auditorium was closed but we visited the "homes" of characters like Scarlett, Will and Deacon. The homes are privately owned and rented to ABC studios during filming season from November to April. Production costs are therefore higher and I was surprised to learn that Connie Britton only makes $100,000 per episode.

99% of the tour was on the bus so picture taking through the bus windows was not ideal. The buses are not permitted to stop and unload. With so many stops, it makes sense. However, we were permitted to go and sit inside the original Bluebird Cafe. It was here that one true life artist was discovered after he was rejected more times than a guitar has strings. His name is Garth Brooks. Another artist, Taylor Swift also caught her break at the Bluebird. The cafe is so popular and packed each night that ABC had to recreate it in a studio. According to the long-time manager the stage crew took the tables clothes, napkins and other objects for an authentic replication.

A Visit to the Grand Ole Opry

After our Nashville tour, I could not wait to visit the Grand Ole Opry.

The Grand Ole Opry is a temple for recognizing, honoring and celebrating the best country music singers. Prior to its current location, the "Mother Church" was located at the Ryman Theater in 1943 which also housed other events and productions. The Ryman was home until 1974 when a new stage was built right outside of Nashville in the themed Opryland where hotels, outlet mall and restaurants exude the Opry spirit.

In an effort to maintain continuity with the Opry's storied past, a large circle was cut from the floor of the Ryman stage and inlaid into the center of the new Opry stage. During our tour we stood on the stage and the circle. I almost expected a lightning bolt to zap me for standing on that hallowed circle given my lack of singing ability.

Sadly a devastating flood in Nashville in 2010 caused massive damage to the Grand Ole Opry including the stage. Miraculously, the circle was untouched. The circle was not broken. It was lovingly preserved during the round-the-clock renovations. Having performed on stage (as a classical dancer), gazing up at the seating, despite the blinding spotlight, I could see the crowds, feel their gaze, their embrace, hear the thunderous applause, the appreciation of the performance and artistry, the acceptance into a family. There's no feeling in the world to compare it. How I miss performing.

Now that we saw Nashville in the daytime, it was time to experience the downtown at night.
So what do I wear--a Victoria's Secret sundress with cowboy boots. Yes I'm representing Miami proudly with a nod to Nashville. I even brought my cowgirl hat but Rachel wants to visit a souvenir shop and what do I find? A PINK COWBOY HAT! Now I expect this in Miami, but did not expect it in Nashville. Of course I purchased it and wore it that evening. Why not?!

After one drink, the night is young, we stepped outside and headed left and came across a boot shop.
Oooh I love boots. This could be very dangerous. Thankfully I have a strong will.

After window boot shopping, hunger pangs struck and we headed to Ripley's for pulled pork with BBQ sauce and fries. When in Rome...Mouthwatering!

As we headed back to pick up the transportation bus to our hotel, we passed several bars. We had a long wait for the bus and it started pouring rain. While we sought shelter under the overhang of a building, I could hear music playing across the street. I told the girls I would return in literally 15 minutes. But then I stayed. I was going to savor every sight, taste and sound of Nashville.

What a great intro to Nashville for a brief three day conference. I will definitely be returning for more sightseeing and culture!

Let the trumpets sound! Yes I'm inlove with Ted Baker! Don't worry, Ted is not a cat for those who know me well. (I named one of my rescue cats Johnny Walker). It's a.....

BRAND. So bachelors, don't be disheartened. There's still hope. (So who's the tall, dark handsome guy on my Instagram page? Stay tuned...) Now back to the matter at heart. I truly am inlove. Read on!

While I am a loyal consumer, blogging about fashion brands is a rarity for me as I only select brands that offer high quality, parallel value, and creativity. Ted Baker fulfills all three tenets. But it's their marketing campaign that attracted me above all.

After following the social media hype leading up to the store opening, when invited to the Ted Baker pre VIP grand opening, I gratefully accepted. First a little about the night of the opening.

Ted Baker, from England, crossed the pond and made a splash at the lux Lincoln Road shopping promenade in South Beach. Ted, in following Roman tradition, served Florida classic cocktails and my all-time favorite, the pina colada.

The staff and dedicated fans were dressed for the occasion in Ted Baker quintessential buttoned-up British fashion. My heart was aflutter when surrounded by men who looked like they took a time machine from the early 1900's in their #TedtoToe suits. Another clever marketing campaign by the brand.

Attending and blogging about these events is such a tough job but...

Attendees were encouraged to shop. No need to ask me twice! I immediately was drawn to a midi dress with vibrant print in pastel and bold colors bordered by black that swayed into the waist. While I have a small frame, I wondered if my curves would go against the style of the slim cut of the brand. Luckily with my medium height and dress size 4, the midi dress was ideal for me. After trying it on, I knew this would be my new go-to dress for occasions requiring Miami sophistication.

Ted Baker is one of the UK's fasting growing leading lifestyle brands. The collection captures the heritage of British tailoring with a thoroughly contemporary outlook. Ted's approach is focused on an unwavering attention to detail and a firm commitment to quality with little touches that make Ted Baker products stand out from the rest. It originated with menswear and has branched out to womenswear and accessories. The incorporation of Miami colors and playfulness is ideal for the Miami fashionista for style and grace.

Most impressive to me is their approach to marketing. While Ted Baker is a fictitious character, the personality of the brand, "refined by quirky", is that of the founder Ray Kelvin. Yes "quirky".

We created a shirt that everyone in the country for some wonderful reason wanted to wear. It was during the period of Acid House and Garage, and they wore these bright acidy colour shirts. These particular shirts had a really nice soft feel. Even to this day I remember it.

I created these shirts and it was like there was suddenly a famine and everyone in the country just wanted these shirts. They used to queue, no word of a lie, down the street to get the shirts on a Saturday in the five shops we had. (Ray Kelvin)

Whether intentionally or not, adding fuel to the eccentricity is the fact that very few have ever seen Ray Kelvin. He never shows his face in public. He considers himself "an ugly buggar".

As if a commitment to quality, attention to detail, a memorable refined- but- quirky style, were enough attributes to set it apart-- It is not. The vision and discipline and creativity to leverage social media instead of traditional advertising campaigns is another ingredient to their winning formula. As a preacher and practitioner of this marketing philosophy, it's easy to follow as a small business owner. But a global brand reaching £700 million is unheard of. Simply GENIUS!

Ted Baker has seamlessly harnessed all aspects of social media-twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. With catchy campaigns like #FindTed as a teaser and invitation to join the search like a hunt for a treasure chest, or #TedLovesMiami to show appreciation to a new home city, #TedtoToe to encourage fans to choose the brand for all apparel and accessories, #PinchMe, and so on demonstrate the effectiveness to ENGAGE customers and KEEP them interested. Ted Baker is not just churning out cookie cutter patterns. Ted includes the customer in the brand process. And that's exactly how I built my small business! Great minds...

Yes I'm inlove with Ted Baker branding. But most of all, the brand inspires me to keep charging forward with other innovative ideas.

The Pimp, the Prostitutes and the Peacock

My blog is about "the joy of life"--my passions, adventures, learning experiences. Here is a rare humorous posting of a true incident. I'm not the comedic writer but this true story is one that causes me to laugh out loud every time I retell it--you had to be there.

It was a Saturday night in Miami, the outer skirts of an edgy neighborhood Wynwood. I stress "outer skirts" and "edgy" which means DON'T STOP, DON'T SIGHTSEE, DON'T Pass Go, Go directly to Jail which is a safer place...A white sedan turns onto a street; stops, engine turned off and out tumble three women with porcelain skin; one wearing fitting jeans, loose gray shirt; the second woman with Irish red hair and wearing a coral sundress; and the third woman in short bangs and wavy brown hair sporting ala Betty Page- with- strapless- sundress- and heels. The driver in bright orange shirt and bling across the chest, gives the girls clear instructions; The driver watches the girls through rearview mirror. The sun is setting. In another neighborhood it's a romantic setting. In outer Wynwood, it could signal danger, a death warrant. The streets are quiet. The women stand on a street corner. Like pros, they begin waving their arms. Passerbys, men, are smiling. A handsome male in vivid blue vest and thrust chest, raises his voice. Is he enthralled by the women or bothered? Is he calling them or complaining?

A police officer pulls up and asks the woman in strapless dress "Are you working?" They continue conversing. Then the officer races around the corner in his police car, passes the white sedan, makes a sharp U-turn and pulls up alongside the driver. He asks the driver "Are you a local? Are you with these women?"

The women: No they are not prostitutes. What were they doing? Preventing a peacock in the middle of the road (the male creature with blue "vest" and thrust chest) from getting struck by a car! The women are employees of the ASPCA and were in town for a conference. As animal lovers, they knew the chances of this stunning peacock getting hit. Yes a peacock in the middle of a bad neighborhood. Only in Miami!

The driver: It was me! Wearing my Bebe shirt, the brand name encrusted in diamonds. The police officer was clearly concerned and advised that we leave immediately. He warned "There was a murder here last week. You don't want to be walking the streets here". I explained to the officer that I live here and the girls are visiting from New York City. To defend their actions I explained they are with ASPCA--they save animals! He didn't seem impressed but still concerned. "You should go now."

Dear, sweet, innocent Olivia wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry--she did both. "Do I look like a hooker?" I explained any attractive woman walking the streets in a dress this part of town is going to stand out--no matter her profession. Although how many hookers wear a lanyard?!

As the scenario sunk in, we burst into laughter which turned into tears. Who would ever have thought that nicely dressed women would be mistaken for a pimp and prostitutes. We weren't even wearing thigh high boots or spiked heels or mini skirt or showing cleavage.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PEACOCK?
The peacock was safe and strutted back home to his female mate. The pair are shacking up three doors down from that infamous street corner. The question is, what was the peacock doing crossing the road? And is the peacock trained for some nefarious activity? I did see him illegally parked in a handicap spot earlier... You never know in Miami.

Viva Outside Las Vegas

Westin Lake Vegas

This past weekend I attended the annual #BlogPaws conference, a social media conference for pet bloggers. It was not on the strip of Las Vegas but thirty minutes outside of Vegas at Lake Vegas, in Henderson, Nevada. My nonprofit site will cover the purpose of the conference and all the cute pets. Here I want to focus on the venue and my side trip to the strip since I have not been here since 2007.

Surprisingly it was an enclave of rich upscale homes on a lake near Hoover Dam. The host hotel was the Westin Lake Vegas Resort & Spa and it was unexpectedly the nicest Westin yet! With the dry heat, the dearth brown terrain, peppered palm trees and glistening oasis of a lake, and the Moroccan theme tile and decor in the hotel I felt transported to northern Africa or the Middle East, neither of which I have visited.

The serenity of the location is a great solution to enjoy the weather, escape the tourist trap of Vegas but still only a 30 minute ride to the strip for action. The hotel has two pools, one adult pool and a family pool on lower level.

On Friday night I escaped to the strip for dinner, a show, gambling and dancing. Sure enough I accomplished all four without getting lost, making new acquaintances, sipping plenty of complimentary champagne and dancing the night away.

The Westin offers a shuttle to their property on the strip. From there I walked three U.S. blocks (not European) which is bit of a hike but I wore my smart heels (not platforms) to the Bellagio hotel to see Cirque du Soleil "O".

So many convention hotels that take up not one but two or three entire blocks! I felt like Alice in Wonderland.

Bellagio was beautiful. It houses brand name stores at one entrance (Tiffany, Gucci, Prada, etc.) and the corridor leads you to the casinos, to the right is the Cirque du Soleil "O" show. Definitely the most spectacular production that has a moving water stage. The acrobats perform their signature aerial stunts but land by diving into the water. Synchronized swimming is another feature. But the entire stage features many moving parts and design sets. Clearly the theater was custom made for this show. INCREDIBLE! I highly recommend it.

So after the show I'm wandering through the casino and turns out I was a lucky charm for some gentlemen playing Black Jack. Why didn't that luck bring me fortune at this slot machine? Lost $10. Oh well.
I was having more fun sitting at Black Jack tables and drinking cocktails.

As I was leaving the casino I walked by a handsome nightclub--Hyde. People were forming a line. Not a kid in my 20's I don't stand in lines to go dancing. Upon exiting the hotel, a couple of handsome guys in black suits asked me if I'd like VIP access to Hyde. Little did I know when I mentioned my name one of the guys emailed or texted my name to the club. Within ten minutes we walked up to the front of the line and my appeared TYPED on a list. Maurice ushered me in and told the waitress to serve me unlimited champagne. And the dancing began all night long. Thankfully I'm not a big drinker. Makes me sleepy--so I had energy to dance.

So when asked the purpose of my visit, I always hesitated. Pet Bloggers and Vegas are an odd match and the quizzical expression on faces confirmed it. So towards the end of the evening I introduced myself as Cat Woman, at least to the men. They were interested in learning more! They got an earful about homeless cats and black cats. And they seem genuinely interested. My work was done. Mission accomplished. But I had fun too!

Cat Women Know How to Have Fun!

This past Halloween I escaped to Dallas, TX to meet some real life characters of the talented kind. I have just returned from my very first Cat Writer's Association Conference. (And no I actually did not wear or bring my cat costume. Had to pack light! Almost impossible when I normally bring six pairs of shoes).

CWA represents the best writers in the cat communications field. To join requires skill and experience and proof that your work has been published in print or online.

For two days I was in the presence of nationally recognized cat writers. Many of them have authored several books, magazine articles and received numerous awards. As the founder of the blog and nonprofit Riverfront Cats, I'm just a kitten compared to these pros. But alas I had something to offer established offline writers--advice on how to transition to the world of blogging and social media. The spirit of CWA is one of support and mentoring.

Year round we work hard, pen to paper, fingers to keyboard; thinking caps keeping the lid on brain smoke, adorned with reading glasses or a cat; "crazy cat lady" or writer's mugs filled to the brim or coffee stains splattered across our desk thanks to some "dippers". However at the conference, we know how to let loose and have fun.

HIDDEN TALENTS

On Friday night, we were entertained with a homemade musical production entitled "Strays the Musical" which explored furry foibles from a pet's point of view. The actors gave voice to a variety of cat and dog characters in this hilarious and often moving "drama-dy". Who knew they possessed such talent!

A six member cast dressed in pedestrian clothes with a dog or cat identifier (pig tails and furry leg warmers worn by Theresa Littlefield representing a dog) sashayed from behind the room to the front stage.

I recognized the vivacious Amy Shojai, one of the co-founders of CWA. Little did I know what was to come--a hidden talent. Her operatic voice sent chills and nostalgic waves. I love musicals! A favorite tradition my mother and I share to this day. The only thing missing was a limber cat to jump on the tables... As a former ballerina performing until the ripe age of 23, I always wanted to be in the cast of CATS... hmmm I wonder, as I lift my leg behind my head--who am I kidding. Those days are gone. But I could listen to Amy for hours. That voice that transports you to another world.

I love these small, intimate conferences where we can scratch beneath the writing surface and learn more about our colleagues--their families, other interests, and hidden talents.

As soon as the last award was announced, the wine glasses empty, attendees stood and the genie came out of the bottle. Our rigid physiques from sitting all day turned into tween gymnasts as we twisted and contorted for memorable poses and photos. Hand gestures signified the claw, magic fingers and the Midas touch. It's amazing what a little recognition, adrenaline and wine can do to rejuvenate the body. No Miley Cyrus acts needed to have fun.

As the revelry subsided, we returned to our hotel rooms and my roommate gingerly tucked away her award in the suitcase. I was reminded of a prior celebration two weeks ago.

On a typical work day, I received an official looking envelope in the mail from CWA. A program or newsletter perhaps? My key slit across the top fold and inside I peered at an ominous document. With caution and surgical precision, I extracted the 9 x 12 linen sheet. "Certificate of Excellence" it read for my blog post "Lion King and the Circle of Love". A simple gesture that heralded my efforts sent a surge through my core. I gazed around the elevator lobby of my condo with dark gray slate, dim lights, a no nonsense cavernous space. Fireworks glared that only I could see. Trumpets blared that only I could hear. Sure it's not a major award, but someone, somewhere said good job. For that I am grateful. It keeps me going.

I begged the elevator Gods for an express ride to the my floor. I wanted to show the cats that hard work pays off. The road may be filled with obstacles, but we felines know patience is golden.

Rushing through my front door, I squealed "Babies!" and the cats predictably tumbled out of cat beds, my bed, my office chair. Their reaction? "If it's not Greenies or piece of chicken, we're returning to our nap!" It's my own fault. My beautiful fur angels turned gluttons from a certain stray swag bag full of cat treats. To be considered for membership in the CWA, you must include, along with your application and $40.00 fee (including $10.00 non-refundable application processing fee), CAT-RELATED samples of your work published or publicly produced during the preceding 12 months (24 months for books). All work samples must be dated, include the publication's name, and must contain significant "cat content," not just mention cats in passing or use them as props or scenery. Works that portray cats in a negative, inhumane or irresponsible manner do not qualify as work samples for CWA membership.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP: For published cat writers, artists, broadcasters and other communications professionals who may or may not be paid for their work. Acceptable samples FOR ASSOCIATE STATUS include:
    1 published exhibit from newspaper, magazine, ezine/online publication, or internal publication; OR
    1 broadcast or file script or tape; OR
    1 public relations speech or technical materials exhibit.

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP: For published cat writers, artists, broadcasters and other communications professionals who are regularly published and are paid for their work. Acceptable work samples for PROFESSIONAL STATUS include:
    2 published exhibits from newspaper, magazine, ezine/online publication, or internal publication; OR
    2 broadcast or file scripts or tapes; OR
    2 public relations speeches or technical material exhibits; OR
    1 book published within the preceding 24 months.

Need a CWA member sponsor? Applications naming CWA member(s) as sponsor(s) receive the highest consideration. The CWA encourages prospective members to contact a current CWA member to discuss possible sponsorship.) Don't specify a sponsor without their consent. Most CWA members will be happy to discuss your cat-related work and your CWA membership application with you.

CWA guidelines for submitted work samples:

1) Vanity-published work, whether printed text or illustrations/photos, will not be accepted as work samples for CWA membership. The CWA defines "vanity publications" as works which the creator pays someone else to print, or which are self-published without meeting any of the criteria detailed in #5 below, or which are not professional quality. Applicants are responsible for affirming the type of publisher they work with. However, the CWA Membership Committee can be guided by other typical "vanity publisher" criteria, such as the fact that vanity publishers usually have numerous "published titles," in contrast to small, lesser-known presses which have only a handful of legitimate titles; or the fact that the publisher is a known vanity press.

2) Any work submitted for CWA membership consideration must be to a large extent about, or relevant to, cats. At least one-third of the content of non-fiction articles/books should cover cats. In fictional works, it's not essential that a cat be the main character, but felines must be integral to the plot and story, rather than incidental characters or walk-ons.

3) Electronically-published work (e.g., from online magazines or other "e-publications) are not considered qualifying work samples for professional or associate status if the works only appear on, or are printed from, an applicant's personal web site or a special-interest or discussion group web site. Applicants should affirm that they have been remunerated in some way for their electronically-published work. Materials published on commercial web sites or even on non-paying online sites can be acceptable if the applicant provides supporting documents (such as historical site information, evidence of a verifiable audience via subscription numbers or the number of site hits, a letter from the commercial site's "editor" or "employer"). Paid blogging counts as published work for purposes of CWA application.

4) Applicants submitting broadcast or film scripts, tapes that have been released to the public, or public relations speeches or technical material exhibits that have been presented to the public, must include substantiation of such distribution, presentation or publication, such as a signed letter from superior, clip of the publication, etc .

5) Books submitted by applicants as work samples will, ideally and preferably, be published/distributed by a commercial publisher. Authors of self-published books must submit supporting documentation that the book is being offered for sale by professional outlets such as book stores (whether physical buildings or online bookstores), commercial web sites, or other venues not owned by the author/creator. The CWA Membership Committee may additionally ask applicants for proof of book sale figures or other information.

6) Applicants submitting any other self-published work (articles, songs, photos, calendars, artwork etc.) must additionally submit one of the following proofs. Either:
a) Evidence that the published work has been vetted by a qualified professional; OR
b) Up-to-date sales figures; OR
c) Proof of payment/remuneration. AND
d) Any other substantiating material requested by the CWA Membership Committee (e.g.,
additional previously-published samples, writer's resume, etc.)

7) ) Any member of the CWA Membership Committee has the right to request additional writing or other work samples, or supporting documents, from any applicant. The Membership Committee also has the right to make exceptions to admit applicants under special considerations.

In all cases, if the CWA membership Committee requests additional substantiation and/or information from an applicant, the amount of time given for consideration before final approval of the application may be extended by up to 30 days.

CWA Guidelines for editors, agents and publishers applying for membership

If you hold the title of Editor of a regularly-published cat newsletter, magazine or in a credentialed book publishing house, you may submit, as your work samples, two issues of the whole publication, with your name and title on the masthead, to be considered for Professional membership.

Editors of online magazines may provide two URLs for issues of their magazine. In the case of online magazines, the CWA Membership Committee may conduct careful monitoring of the magazine's site, and may request further credentials, such as your professional resume. If any member of the Membership Committee questions the legitimacy of the online publication, the burden of proof shall be on the applicant.

If you are an editor in a book publishing house, you'll need to submit your professional resume, along with a letter from your publisher (on official publishing house letterhead) detailing your qualifications for Professional membership in the CWA, including title(s) of cat book(s) you've edited.
If you're a publisher or literary agent who doesn't write yourself, but wants to be a CWA member, submit a professional resume and a list of relevant books you've handled/published/agented. The Membership Committee will review the material you submit individually, and may request additional supporting documentation.

My First Music Video--Get Your Sexy On!

When you think about the most embarrassing moments in your life, were they ordinary actions that exploded into laughable accidents? Or was it something intentional, maybe an inpromptu Karaoke song where you were half drunk, and strutted to the stage with the confidence of a peacock and shaking your groove and belting notes thinking "Take that Beyonce!"

The question really is--would you humiliate yourself, with no assistance from Johnnie Walker or Grey Goose for the fun of it? Or to entertain friends and loved ones? Or for any other reason?

Well I was put to that test. I'm not a funny character and Lord knows my musical talents are limited to ballet and Latin dancing (Salsa, merengue). Sure I have been known to sing in the shower, but I'm more likely to sing and wiggle in my car seat while driving. But in those celebratory moments I would never subject innocent eardrums to my vocal strains or attempt to crack a joke.

However, in my commitment to raise awareness about homeless pets and engage the average person to talk about the misconceptions surrounding stray cats and cat women, I took the plunge. For National Feral Cat Day, I created a music video and yes I still can NOT sing. But that's the point.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. At least I had fun.

Let me be perfectly clear--

Yes I'm Crazy.

Yes I love Cats.

But I'm not a Crazy Cat Lady.

I'm just crazy for Cats.

Given the stereotype about cat ladies especially those who feed stray and feral cats, it was time to get crazy. While I normally feed the cats in a t-shirt, yoga pants and sneakers, I originally started feeding cats in sundresses --my uniform for work. As an outdoor walking tour guide, it gets hot in Miami, so I would feed the Riverfront cats on my way to work. As pedestrians and local residents observed, they called me "Sexy Cat Lady". Really? Wow, I'm getting older and with body parts fighting gravity, I'll take whatever crumb of a compliment I can get.

I think most women feel sexy on the inside even though we may not have the time or need to show it on the outside. That includes cat women.

So I donned my black cat costume and walked the streets of downtown Miami and Miami Beach in the middle of the day for filming this homemade video. (Honestly there are not many people outside at that time, so I wasn't as embarrassed just very hot).

The idea: cat women come from all backgrounds and professions. We are not lonely or have 30 cats. Our lives are full with regular jobs, family and giving back. There's a special quality we all share--we think of others first before ourselves. Working with homeless cats, squatting or crawling on hands and knees in gravel lots, mosquito-infested woods, to feed or rescue injured cats (and dogs), I am humbled and grateful for the little things in life.

Stray and feral cats are also harmless. Their needs are the same as humans--food, shelter and affection. They show this everyday in their body language- rubbing against a tree trunk or edge of cardboard box, or my leg. Even the feral ones are happy to see you.

What is Twerking?

Today I learned a new slang word. "TWERK". As a 44- year young, highly educated female, no children (therefore no teenagers) and who avoids using slang, keeping up with slang can be challenging.

So when I heard the word "twerking" not once, but twice today, I felt OLD!

I've heard of "twerp", and "Twitter" and "tweeting". But "twerk"? Wait a second. Maybe it's a new word and I'm not out of touch with lexicon of Generation Y. I'm only one generation before (Generation X).

I heard the term on the season premiere of the Ellen show today in her intro when she announced she was going to "twerk". Then an hour later, in checking my emails on the laptop, the headline on the news section read:

Anna Wintour Cancels Miley Cyrus' Vogue Cover After VMAs Twerking

Aah Miley Cyrus' infamous performance! That's a clear hint. While I did not watch the VMA's (that stand for Video Music Awards) I did watch the news highlights. It doesn't deserve my attention on Joie de Vivre. So upon Googling the definition of twerking, I was surprised to see the year 2006--that's seven years ago!

On Yahoo Answers:

[Feb 28, 2006] Best Answer: Twerking is a frequently used slang word among young African Americans. To twerk is to dance sexually, grinding oneself against the partner. ~

Then the same website updated the definition in 2012.

[Jan 11, 2012] Best Answer: Twerking is a type of dance in which a female rigorously shakes her booty, usually against a male's crotch area.

Even Yahoo! uses slang "booty" as part of the definition.

Wiki Answers used non colorful language to accurately define the action of twerking.

Twerk also known as twerking, is a sexually provocative dance move. It involves hip thrusting moves in a low, squatting stance.

After viewing videos on YouTube, it appears the term reached mainstream within the last 8 months. Now I can shake it and shimmy like any dancer (as in classical trained) but there is a difference between Dirty Dancing a la Patrick Swayze and Baby style and twerking. I could not in good conscious share any videos--butt cheeks overexposed and jiggling...you get the picture. Save it for the bedroom.

Meeting Inspiring Authors--this time Gwen Cooper

Last week was one of those moments where I was counting the days before I headed out to meet someone who I have held in high esteem --a famous figure in her own right. No she's not a singer, or movie actress. Even better, she's an author.

Meeting your favorite author is a highlight in life. For me it's more celebratory than meeting a TV personality (with exceptions of course). Their stories, words can move our hearts, enlighten our minds, make us laugh and/or inspire us to improve our lives and those around us. I consider myself very fortunate to have met the authors of my favorite books, all non fictional. I have three favorite books. Stolen Lives by Malika Oufkir,
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and now Homer's Odyssey by Gwen Cooper. The first two are heavy drama material but are inspiring on many levels. Stolen Lives shows both the frailty and iron will of the human spirit. Malika Oufkir survived a desert prison for 20 years. In following a routine and exercising her brain daily to stay sane and alert, Malika escaped with her mother and siblings. This book has taught me to be constantly aware of my surroundings and to think fast and logically under pressure. By accident, I discovered that Malika lived in my condo building and soon I organized an Oprah- style interview in our party room and invited residents.

Greg Mortenson, in Three Cups of Tea is fighting terrorism abroad by building schools and educating girls in a country, Pakistan, that regards them merely above slaves. He made a promise to local villagers who saved him from an accident following a mountain climbing excursion, to return the favor and he did. Little did Mortenson realize that by educating girls, Pakistanis would regard him as a hero and turn against the Taliban and other terrorists. Mortenson, in my opinion deserved the Nobel Prize. Instead newly elected US President Obama received the award in 2008. While I have great respect for the Presidency, I am unclear as to his contribution to mankind.

Education is key to many societal ills. Sometimes throwing millions of dollars to a government run program is less effective than an entrepreneurial program with less funding. Greg Mortenson's schools for girls is proof. I had the honor of meeting Greg in 2010.

On March 28, 2013 I finally met my third favorite author. Gwen Cooper is a native Miamian and overturned a taboo subject into a NY Times Bestselling book--a single woman living with three cats. In the 90's living with more than two cats was frowned upon. But Gwen has a big heart and when the vet asked if she would a adopt a third cat, a blind, black kitten, she shunned society's labels. Gwen was compassionate, not crazy.

Homer is the blind, black cat and in Homer's Odyssey, Gwen tackles stereotypes and educates readers:

1. about the unique essence of cats; they are not all aloof and scaredy cats
2. that black cats are sweet-natured and extremely intelligent and not bad luck; quite the opposite
3. how blind cats are not entirely handicapped; Homer would freely jump from great heights!
4. that a single woman with more than one cat is not a lonely woman and can lead a healthy, robust life.

My review years ago offers a more in-depth glimpse.

Gwen's book caught my attention the same time I moved into a new development where I discovered many stray cats in the neighborhood. I had heard about stray cats but never lived in a city in "depressed" conditions. Homer's Odyssey inspired me to continue educating the public about the misconceptions of stray, feral and black cats to save them from becoming road kill or from the doom of the county shelter.

Her book was light-hearted, easy-to-read and made me laugh innumerable times.

And she recently launched "Love Saves the Day", an endearing fictional but enlightening story about an estranged mother and daughter. Hauntingly beautiful, heart touching, and at times painfully raw, this is a story about grief, hope and healing. It’s a story about the importance of memories, and of preserving a part of one’s past. The relationship between mother and daughter is complex but even deep rifts can be mended even after death. The simple presence and unconditional love of a pet, a cat, often like a child, is greater than love spoken with words. This book will stay with you long after you turn the final page.

These books collectively have given me the courage to take on a subject that is critically void of awareness and education. But I'm not afraid of a challenge and my mother always taught me to give back. Volunteering and helping others has always been part of my life. I truly believe if each person volunteered weekly or donated to a cause regularly the world would be a much better place.There would be more understanding, empathy, compassion and progress.

My Favorite SuperBowl Commercials 2013

As a marketing professional I love to watch the SuperBowl mostly for the commercials. While I no longer work at an ad agency, it certainly serves as inspiration for campaigns for my own small company.

Creating an ad that is both memorable and impacts sales is extremely difficult. Creative design reps and account executives huddle in rooms sometimes on oddly shaped chairs or bean bags with a multitude of snacks ranging from popcorn to pizza to soda and the brainstorm sessions commence, lasting hours. Fumes seeping out of the door hinges.

Kudos to the agencies behind these popular and memorable advertisements.

So here are my favorites and apparently my first three selections echoes that of American viewers. Which one is your favorite? Leave a comment below!

#1 Budweiser, “Landslide”
Budweiser's use of Clydesdale horses is a perennial favorite of mine and for many viewers. How? Why? Well deep down Americans love animals and the reunion of a horse, a pet, an animal with which we formed a special bond, pulls hearts strings. We can relate to unconditional love. Admittedly it still makes me cry. But then again, I do work with animals. (My other job. www.pawsitivelyhumane.org). On the marketing side, Anheuser- Busch simultaneously launched a social media campaign to name the foal featured in the ad. It was a viral hit. #2 Tide, “Miracle Stain”
A little humor goes a long way; While other attempts are scored as "cheesy", this commercial hits the mark. A San Francisco fan spills nachos on his jersey only to find the resulting stain resembles 49ers legend Joe Montana. As pilgrims — a/k/a Niners fans — flock to Montanaland to pay homage, his wife (a Ravens supporter) gets the last laugh when the offending stain is removed thanks to Tide.

#3 Dodge Ram: So God made a Farmer
I'm a sucker for pets and patriotism. This ad had me choked up. It wasn’t flashy or filled with special effects, but Dodge Ram’s Super Bowl commercial that featured the late radio broadcaster Paul Harvey’s tribute to U.S. farmers won the hearts and minds of viewers Sunday night.

The two-minute spot featured a series of stark photos of farmers at work. Along with a montage of still images, Harvey’s distinctive voice delivers the narration: his “So God Made a Farmer” speech, which he gave in 1978 at the National Future Farmers of America Convention. He died in 2009 at age 90.

#4 Best Buy: Amy Poehle
This caught my attention for the humor and Amy Poehle plays the perfect neurotic customer while the Best Buy employee politely follows her around. OK so we know that Best Buy sells electronics, washer and dryers, tablets, etc. Who doesn't know? However the commercial falls short and only emphasizes the weakness of these chain stores--the employees often don't know the answers for a host of product questions, hence the employee never gets a word in. Well at least it was entertaining.

#5 Taco Bell: Party Seniors
So it's not realistic (along with 90% of the ads) but I love to dance and eat Taco Bell late at night. Except most are closed after midnight. Maybe by the time I'm 70, Taco Bell will stay open until 3am. Nightclubs and parties in Miami end at 6am.

#6 Got Milk: The Rock
As a former fitness trainer and one who knows healthcare would be less costly in our country if Americans improved their lifestyle and eating habits, I love this commercial. It's hip, fun, humorous and gets across a clear message. Do you drink milk?

My Resolution for 2013

It's the New Year!

It is true--as you age, every year goes by faster and faster. At the age of 43 turning 44 in October, the year 2012 was a whirlwind. My goodness, does this mean when I'm in my 50's time moves at lightning speed? Anyone? (feel free to comment below).

With all the noisemakers, clinking of champagne glasses, smiling faces and hopes of a better year, it soon dissipates and the celebratory atmosphere is quickly followed by the dreaded word "Resolutions". Such a weighted word, don't you think? Perhaps since most people associate it with goals of weight loss and the low success rate, the word resolution is often associated with failure. It can be daunting.

So many years I have made resolutions and not a single one involved weight loss. My life increasingly grows in complexity, mostly because I choose to take on hefty challenges revolving around a nonprofit I started. At the onset of the New Year, I keep it simple. When curve balls are thrown my way, I reflect on those resolutions I have achieved. Only two I never fulfilled

One year it was to learn to dance merengue and salsa. CHECK. (I was in my 20's living at home; no responsibilities other than my two jobs).
1997 move out on my own to Miami. CHECK.
1998 to get my Master's Degree, CHECK.
2000 to buy my first condo, CHECK. in later years to learn to dance advanced Salsa, CHECK (although I never used it);
Next year to learn belly dancing CHECK (again I never used it).
To read more books, CHECK (even started a book club with my friend).
2006 Learn to dance Tango. NEGATIVE.
2007 Learn French. NEGATIVE.
2009 Start a small part-time business. CHECK.
2012 Start a nonprofit. CHECK

With career advances and other growing family responsibilities, it means less time for yourself. Losing a job can send your life in a tailspin and survival means forgoing fun goals like learning the Tango and French.

I don't look at years 2006 and 2007 as failures. I simply could not dedicate the time due to life emergencies.One of my strongest attributes is that when I make a commitment, I see it through 100% or more. I may not be a genius, or scored high on my SAT's. But I'm a hard worker and complete any job or task to the end. The reality is emergencies do occur and managing and overcoming them is a triumph. I pulled through dark times without getting into debt, or borrowing money or asking for help. I survived on my own and those are the greater accomplishments than my New Year's resolution.

But I'm back on track. So what is my resolution this year? A big one for me. To fine tune my time management skills and prioritizing tasks. It's easy for me to get distracted with fun tasks and procrastinate on the more important ones. Sorry to disappoint any readers. My resolution is nothing sexy like learning the Tango or French language. But putting it in writing will encourage me to make an earnest effort. Starting now. So instead of shopping online for new office furniture, I'm going to work on writing that article.

Feeling Sorry for Powerball Lottery Winners

There were two winners in the recent HALF A BILLION dollar jackpot winnings for the Powerball this past Wednesday. I just watched the live newscast of the family that won in Missouri. It was the all-American family from Midwest-- mother, father, three adult sons and beautiful young daughter. Their faces beaming, containing their excitement, perhaps nervous from being on live television.

Once upon a time I felt genuinely happy for these winners. Imagining how there lives would be a little easier and better. So I thought...Now I'm fearful and pray for them. How I wish they never did the press conference. WHY?

In picking up the newspaper, I started reading and learning about the harsh reality of winning lotteries. The more I read the more fearful I became that I do not even buy a ticket. You see for these mega winners, their life changes completely and not necessarily for the better. Sure money can buy material things but you lose your privacy and also a "normal life". It attracts unwanted attention. A common thread for these winners is the mounting temptations to spend recklessly, the inability to manage the earnings, and the number of disingenuous people around you --friends, relatives, coworkers, investors. It's very similar to paparazzi pursuing celebrities. You are followed, hounded relentlessly. No one is genuine anymore. For the average person one might say "how bad can it be? We're talking millions of dollars." It's the beginning of another nightmare and unexpected pressure. Yes having millions of dollars comes at hefty price.That's why stardom and celebrity fame comes at a price.

Spending is easy but several mega winners will tell you they wish they never won! Not knowing how to manage and invest, wanting to help every friend, relative and coworker, and temptations to buy everything they ever dream of lead to bankruptcy, and for some--homelessness. Even more tragic, it has lead to a number of suicides. At first I couldn't believe it. The more I read, the more it made sense. How to survive? Jack Whittaker wish he never won the $314 million after his daughter committed suicide

Poverty after excessive gambling. There was Evelyn Adams who won not once but twice! Raking in $5.4 million in 1985 and 1986, she admits gambling became an addiction. Today she lives in a trailer.

The pressure could lead to death. In 1998, William "Bud" Post III won $16.2 million in the Pennsylvania lottery, only to later wish it had never happened. That's because his brother hired a hit man to try to kill him and his sixth wife (and was arrested for doing so), other relatives made him invest in businesses that never paid off, a landlady made him give her a third of his winnings and Bud ended up in jail for firing a gun over the head of a bill collector. He died in 2006 of respiratory failure.

End up murdered. Then there was Abraham Shakespeare who won the $31 million jackpot in Florida in 2006. He disappeared in 2009, having spent most of his fortune; his body was found in early 2010 under a concrete slab. According to author of the book "Plain Dealer", a woman befriended him and fleeced him for $1.8 million. Police believe she may be connected to the murder.

Being too generous lead to suicide. I remember the story of Bob Harrell Jr. who won $31 million in the Texas lottery. At first everything was great. He purchased a ranch and half a dozen homes for himself. As one who loved to give, he purchased new automobiles for family members and gave large contributions to his church and if a congregation member needed help, he was ready with cash. Then his life unraveled as quickly as it came together. With mounting pressures from everyone, his spending and lending was out of control. It splintered his marriage and 20 months after winning the lottery, Harrell committed suicide.

There are many stories like these. I only shared a few.

ETERNAL OPTIMIST
As an optimist, at first I hesitated to write this post and burst bubbles this holiday season.But then I've always been an educator to help PREVENT accidents and misfortunes and improve lives of people and pets.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR
The lessons I learned and want to share with you are the following:

Don't buy a lottery ticket for bigger games if you currently have debt for non necessity items. Debts from mounting bills due to job loss and other emergencies is one thing. But if you have debt from non emergency spending, chances are you will have difficulty managing your million dollar winnings. Play a smaller game or scratch-off ticket.
Avoid playing major lottery games in states where you are required to do a press conference. To me this is the biggest mistake because now the whole world knows and regular people have no idea how to handle the constant attention and pressure. By law in Illinois, you have to appear at a press conference. Only six states allow you to remain anonymous--Kansas, Maryland, Delaware, Michigan, North Dakota, and Ohio. Other states publish your name but you are not dragged to a media frenzy event. Sure, the media can obtain this information and publish it but you're wise not to do any television interviews for further exposure.
Don't rush to claim your ticket. Do research first and set up a Trust fund to protect your identity as much as possible. Sadly in the State of Oregon, this practice is forbidden.
Hire a reputable accountant. Mine is the best! She has clients across the country, from all income levels and knows the laws inside and out and doesn't charge outrageous fees. It's like getting a Mercedes for price of a Toyota. She'll guide you through this complicated process as you gain more assets.

Do I buy any lottery tickets? Oh sure! I only play the Fantasy Five and am thrilled whenever I win $10, $20 even $200. The odds are greater and I don't have to be on national TV. So winning a maximum prize of $200,00, I would be ecstatic! I know how to invest, manage, never spend more than what I earn and save. Truly wealthy people are not saddled with debt. So far I'm ahead with my Fantasy Five earnings, by a few dollars. At least I'm not losing and still hope to win a few thousand dollars.

One last thing, please consider donating to a charity the same amount you spend on any gambling. The reward is greater!

"Different by Nature" that's the motto of Salt Lake City. Indeed after my very brief trip, I was so impressed with this city, I have added it to my Top 10 list of cities to visit or return. So many unexpected and pleasant (except one) surprises, I was heartbroken I could not spend more time. There were a number of free tours and free transportation. Then I saw gangsters and cowboys getting married! Then I get into a duel with a certain woman and end up with bloody nose. Read on!

The purpose of my trip was for personal and professional growth. I attended Blog Paws, a conference for pet bloggers to enhance efforts for my new dream, a nonprofit organization to help homeless pets.

First, I made sure to arrive the night before the conference so I had half a day to explore. What was I thinking. Half a day? This city has so much to offer! My hotel was ideally located in downtown, and it reminded me of Miami--a small big city. I was minutes away from visiting the Mormon temple grounds, museums and galleries, from sampling endless dining and shopping options, from attending a Broadway musical or symphony...There's so much more to discover. Nestled at the base of the Wasatch Range, one is so close to streams and trails to hike and bike. City and nature are neighbors that live in harmony. What was most impressive was the cleanliness of the entire city especially downtown. No trash, litter or graffiti.

NO GPS Needed
Salt Lake city is so well planned, you don't really need GPS. The city is built on a grid, and there's public transit everywhere. Buses, light rail (TRAX) and high-speed rail (Front Runner) can convey you throughout Salt Lake City and around the Wasatch Front. Fares to ride TRAX and local buses are $2.25 one way $4.50 round trip or $5.50 all day. However in downtown, is a free-fare zone for both the train and buses. Yes free!

The day was glorious and weatherpersons warned of a 97 degree high temperature. Wow! That's hotter than Miami, or so I thought. No worries for this Miami girl, my wardrobe is full of light, airy sundresses.

So I walked three blocks from my hotel to catch the TRAX. After about seven minutes, I hopped off at the stop outside the Temple grounds.What greeted me was something out of a painting. The tall, clean line buildings and the rows of colorful flower beds--it all looked new! But it wasn't. Just very well kept by volunteers. A recurring theme during my two hour visit to Temple grounds which explains a lot.

There are several buildings open to the public with FREE tours offered by volunteer tour guides.

My mother toiled in gardens most of her adult life until a fall signaled her to sell her house and move to a condominium with elevators and no stairs and no gardens to tend to. Gardening was a labor of love.

So upon walking through one gate I inquired at the information booth about the various tours. Apparently I just missed the "garden tour" by half an hour. If only I did a little research and planning. However, the volunteer at the booth explained she could have two sisters (Mormon sisters--that is how they refer to fellow women of the same religion) take me on a general tour and talk about the gardens.

The sisters, walked out in very humble blouses and long skirts. To be truthful, I felt under dressed and half naked in my short and bra less sundress. Not because of how the sisters were dressed, but because for me it did not feel hot in the direct 97 degree sun! Mother Nature and I were at odds. The air was so dry that later I experienced nose bleeds. I missed the Miami humidity! Can you believe that? But one older woman complimented my dress and told me I wore it well. Relief set in. Nothing was going to spoil this beautiful visit.

The sisters, while they didn't know the names or types of the flowers still offered a couple of fascinating facts about these endless gardens. One, they are replanted 16 times a year by volunteers from the age of 12 to 18. From a young age, the Church of Latter Day Saints teaches young people a work ethic and the importance of contributing or giving back through their skills. It is no wonder that as a community, Salt Lake City prospered quickly as an outcast group. Second, the gardens are considered "rooftop" located just above a heated garage below. So that's where all the non-volunteers that work in the various buildings park their vehicles. Genius!

As I continued following the sisters, we came upon the administration building as seen in the below photo on the left. The first church office was built in 1853 and all records of births, baptisms, marriages and deaths are stored there. This is very important as I would assume, this determines if you are a Mormon, the only people that can enter the Temple. Non Mormons are not permitted. My second assumption is that if Mormons tithe, (offer one tenth or ten percent of their harvest or in contemporary times, their income) this is where the contributions are tracked and recorded.

Once I thanked the sisters I continued on my own to absorb and revel in this serenity and beauty. Then the Temple appeared like a shiny beacon in the distance. Near me were a wedding party posing for photos.

The red, white and 1930's theme was fun and festive and caught me by surprise. To be honest I was sensing a gangster theme. I had assumed the religion was strict and would not permit deviations from the white and black. Well the bride is wearing white. Looks like groom and groomsmen have total freedom in deciding their attire. Hmm I wonder if brides can wear other colors?

As I meandered on the grounds heading towards the temple that grew larger, more ominous, I saw one, two, three, 20 different wedding parties. The Temple performs over 50 wedding ceremonies a day! Even more in the summertime. Couples and close friends and family members travel from all over the country and the world to celebrate their wedding at the capital of Mormonism.

At various outdoor entrances, wedding families posed for group photos before entering the temple. This one caught my attention where the groom and his toddler son are wearing cowboy hats! I soon learned there are a number of ceremony rooms inside the temple.

My next stop was the Beehive house, also the home of Brigham Young, the prophet. Two sisters greeted me inside the house and two other sisters were the tour guides. Another free tour.

Something else that was hard to miss. Each sister always carried two books. The Bible and the Book of Mormon.

The house was built in in 1889 and Brigham Young had arrived from Illinois with only a bible, the book of Mormon, a dictionary and tools. Faith and hard work would provide them shelter and sustenance. Sure enough it did. This is why the home is referred to as the Beehive house and has a plaster beehive affixed to the rooftop. The beehive is symbolic of industrious work.

The sisters explained that a person is designated a "prophet" to teach about Jesus Christ, just like in the Old Testament, and mentioned Moses as one of the well known prophets. Brigham Young started as an apostle of Joseph Smith who was a prophet. Later Brigham Young was the chosen prophet to lead the church.

The house was beautifully decorated. We learned that some of the more specialized work from furniture making to artistic designs were all contributions from fellow (Mormon) brothers and sisters. They were a community that regularly worked hard and helped their neighbor. This was truly impressive.

I had expected more austere and humble furnishings. My preconceived notions were far from the truth. If community members came together and offered their specialty skills, and this is the home of the leader of the church, then it only makes sense his home would have the finest furniture and decor.

When I asked how many children Brigham Young bore, the sisters answered that no one knows for sure. He had at least 17 children but possibly more. About seven children lived in this house, others lived next door.

After the tour, next door was the Lion House which now serves as an iconic restaurant known for their homemade recipes especially the bread and buns. It was recommended to eat in the outdoor patio, but unfortunately it was closed for a wedding reception but the meal was palatable and definitely homemade. Since I was on vacation with no time to exercise, I chose the grilled chicken instead of the caloric chicken pie. Delicious.

My free time was ticking fast and I scurried through one of two visitor's centers. So much to see, learn and admire! There was a model of the Temple with one side cut open like a doll house to give outsiders a view of the various rooms and chambers and their purpose. Unfortunately, my time was up and I could not stay for the free tour!

As I headed out of the gates, a most spectacular and gracious host loomed and bid me well--the Mormon Temple.

The Latter-day Saints labored with faith for 40 years to build a new temple. A flawed initial foundation, the arrival of federal troops in 1858, and the building of railroads from 1868 to 1873 caused major delays. Severe winters, plagues, extreme poverty, the lack of effective shipping methods, and the demands of harvest and further settlement also slowed construction. But despite these difficulties, the Saints continued their labors and completed the temple in 1893.

The above quote was an inscription in the visitor's museum. As I exited the grounds, I felt inspired and received affirmation. While I may be Catholic, both religions have much in common. And so I felt a connection and received a message. At a difficult crossroads in my life, where I was currently without a day job and regular income, I had made a tough decision. To pursue my dream to grow my small business. It would not be easy. Hurdles, disappointments and long hard work awaited me. But this is nothing new for me--that was my advantage. It is a familiar road. More importantly, I received an acknowledgement that I embraced wholeheartedly. For many years now, whether I was unemployed or living well, I was volunteering. I was giving back. The Mormons don't just preach about service, they live it everyday. Such a wonderful example. I realized if everyone gave back just a little regularly, this world would be a much happier place. My blood, sweat and tears to help homeless animals is not without its rewards. While I may not see it now, God's grace will reveal itself in time. I am so thankful for all that I have and feel truly blessed for my family, my health, and the freedom of this country to realize my dreams.

Thank you Salt Lake City! I'll be back!

Mother's Day at the Team Room, Cauley Square

It's Mother's Day and I wondered what my mother would choose for her brunch or destination. Yes on this day and her birthday, mom gets to choose any activity of her liking. And boy does she keep it varied and interesting.

Once it was an airboat tour of alligators. The following year it was brunch outdoors surrounded by gardens--that's heaven for a greenthumb like my mother. Then the next year it was brunch in the Art Deco interior of the National Hotel followed by privileges to their pool and beach access. This year it was Florida history and brunch at the Tea Room at Cauley Square--a historic railroad village in Homestead, Florida. The first time I visited Cauley Square in March, I was so excited. It was like discovering a slice of history quietly tucked away.

The Tea Room is nestled among a handful of pioneer built houses. I'm reminded of ladies in petticoat or high collar dresses that gathered for afternoon tea. Sure enough the painting on the house exterior, says it all. Oh fiddle-dee-dee, I didn't wear a dress.

Inside we scanned the three dining rooms. Originally we reserved the "butterfly room" but our two seater table jammed in a corner was a tight squeeze. No worries. There were other themed rooms. So we opted for the "antique room" to the left of main entrance.

Today's menu was a special three course pre-planned menu instead of the typical soup, salad or sandwiches. Sure enough it tasted like grandmother's homemade cookin' which we enjoyed while scanning the antiques throughout the room. Upon leaving, we popped into the "white lace room" surrounded by windows. We made a note to return for sandwiches and tea next time.

After lunch, the garden paths invite you to casually stroll under the shade of decades old towering trees.

Among the gardens you will find quaint little cottages that offer you some of the most intriguing items to delight the discerning shopper. These shops offer collectible treasures each with its own flair from antiques to country crafts, fine art, home decor, vintage clothing, hand-crafted items, jewelry and specialty paper store for invitations and more.

But one highlight for me were the outdoor cats (around 20) and family of racoons that lived around the antique shop run by a little old lady. I soon learned she's a fellow member of the Cat Network. All cats are rescues and are spayed/neutered and vaccinated. She also cares for a family of racoons. I happened to see the mother and babies waddling around. Some cats were lazily napping outside and didn't blink as you walked by or stopped to say "hello kitty". I even spotted an older raccoon at the neighboring courtyard.

As we continued meandering the grounds, our trail lead us to the Village Chalet restuarant. This shows the quaintness of the one -block village. This video shows us looking for the restaurant.

Just one more place to visit to sample the food and ambience.

Cauley Square also hosts different events throughout the year such as fashion shows, the Renaissance Festival and many other unique events.

It was so peaceful, a nice escape from the city life. As we drove home, past all the crops fields and beautiful homes, I thought about buying a small house as a weekend getaway. Bet you didn't know there's a little country in me.

So I wonder what mom will choose for her 70th birthday in August. She did mention skydiving! In this case, I will dutifully serve as cheerleader.

Alligators, Crocodiles and Pythons Oh My!

I love my home state of Florida for many reasons--the weather (yes I can take humidity over freezing cold any day), the beaches, the variety of cultural activities and the scenery EXCEPT for unwanted alligators, crocodiles, and pythons. We see them more and more in front lawns, backyards and swimming pools.

Growing up in Titusville, FL (across the river from Kennedy Space Center) , we had a house with plenty of trees, bushes and flower gardens which my mother tended to regularly. Often she would spend an entire day on all fours, with hoe, shovel, bags of soil, toiling away--weeding, digging, planting and repeat. But once she thought she grabbed the green water hose. As it turns out it was a garden snake that slithered right out of her hands. She shrugged it off. On another occasion my sister, father and I were indoors and heard my mother screaming, shrieking! Was she being attacked? YES! A cockroach had flown down her shirt while she was gardening. I ALMOST PASSED out at the thought of it. I always say, old age won't kill me-- but arachnophobia, cockroach phobia, reptile phobia, will certainly be the cause of my heart attack. (My mother didn't faint, she's stronger than me).

This is why I live in a highrise condo, closer to the clouds than the ground, on the 40th floor. How high do cockroaches fly? Wait! Don't tell me. Let me continue to believe they hover around floors 1-5.

In my research as part of the storytelling of the Florida landscape for my popular Art Deco/South Beach tours, I share the fact that Miami Beach was originally inhabited by rats and crocodiles. That's correct. CROCODILES, not alligators. Over the years they have almost become extinct and were listed as endangered and it was forbidden to trap or kill them. Sure enough with time, the American Crocodile has made a comeback. An ecosystem restoration project flourished and crocodiles now total around 1,500 in the state. It's cousin, the alligator still dominate at 1 million.

So what's the difference? Basic Facts:

Salt water crocodile

Alligators are native to only the US and China (where there few left). Crocs are more prevelant throughout the world especially Africa, Asia and Australia.
Crocodiles have pointed, snaggle-toothed, V-shaped snouts, while Alligators have U-shaped mouths.
Alligators generally grow to 6 feet in length. Crocs up to 23ft. WOW.
Alligators are only found in fresh water but also brackish. Crocs can stand brackish and sometimes salt water.
Crocodile gets their name from the Greek meaning “worm of the stones”. Alligator comes from the Spanish “Lagarto” for lizard. (Identified by Spanish Explorers in the New World).
Crocodiles tend to be the ones made into handbags, belts and boots.

Last summer I saw on late night TV news a seven- foot alligator that had pummeled through a screen door and lay on the kitchen floor of an elderly woman's home. Maybe he was looking for a cool spot? Fortunately the unwelcome visitor didn't attack the woman as she almost stepped on him. She did live near a canal where they often live and lurk. But apparently, the American crocodile and alligator generally stay away from humans. There has never been a reported incident of a crocodile attacking a human in the Florida wild.

An increase in crocodile population means that "croc encounters" are on the rise as well. Last summer, crocs cruised into the canals of upscale Gables by the Sea along Biscayne Bay. Then a five- foot crocodile was found in the swimming pool of a homeowner. But when state trappers came to pull the crocodile, they dumped it back into the canal, weeks after a dead dog was found floating in the bay with bite marks. While crocodiles were removed from the "ENDANGERED" list they are still "PROTECTED" federally and can not be trapped or killed. This prompted the community association to add "crocodile watch" to the Crime Watch and Traffic Watch duties.

Even more alarming is that crocodiles and alligators eat small prey, including pet dogs. Just last month in Key Largo, a 10-footer in a canal killed a 65 pound dog named Roxie.

More crocodiles are pulled from swimming pools, plucked from ocean waves in Cocoa Beach, and spotted sunbathing in a homeowner's yard in Tampa.

So are alligators and crocodiles invading suburbia or is man invading their natural habitat by building homes and communities on the border of the Everglades? This is why I happily live on the east side, far from the Everglades in a highrise. But this story takes another wildlife turn. PYTHONS!

Homeowners in west Miami are now placing "nuisance calls" not just for alligators and crocodile sightings but pythons as well! Burmese pythons, native to Southeast Asia were smuggled into the U.S. as pets. But over time, people dumped these pets into the Everglades. It sounded like a joke when the news first hit in 2000: Giant Burmese phythons were invading the Everglades. Now scientists have measured the impact of this voracious species and the news is troubling.

Experts say these pythons have almost obliterated marsh rabbits, foxes, raccoons, opossums, and white-tailed deer. It's possible that the decline in bobcats, coyotes and panthers is linked to the disappearance of the smaller prey.

Pythons are also eating lots of birds. More than 25% of pythons found in the Everglades contain bird remains, according to the Miami Herald, January 31, 2012. "They also happily eat pets including cats, dogs and some farm animals. Roosters and geese have been found in their stomachs".

The Everglades National Park personnel have captured or killed 1,825 since 2000.

In watching Animal Planet's The Swamp Wars, I soon recognized the aerial view and terrain from the opening credits--South Florida. In this video, a woman catches a glimpse of a snake in her backyard and calls 911. Miami Dade Fire Rescue comes out and turns out it's a very large Burmese Python. Watch as this female firefighter tries to grab the snake!

In wrapping this up, I just realized my condo is along the Miami River. Do they live there as well? I've seen many manatees. While I'm feeding the neghborhood cats, near bushes, there could be snakes and alligators lurking nearby! Oh no! Dialing National Wildlife folks now.

The Rage about Pinterest

Now as a marketing professional it's my job to keep up with marketing trends, gimmicks, technology... Candidly, I haven't plunged into Google+ and based on loose perception, it rates low on the craze scale but according to one Google analyst, they have several million users. We'll have to wait and see for proven case studies for its impact.

But a newcomer social technology, Pinterest, has received immediate positive buzz. Fellow bloggers have embraced it.

Recently, HitWise, a web tracking firm, named it one of the Top 10 social networks on the Internet. Small business owners that can't afford traditional marketing, are smart to delve into social media.

So, here's a quick Pinterest lesson.

Pin: A "pin" is an image, which usually includes a web link, that you tack to your boards.
Boards: A "board" is where all your pins live, and you can create as many boards as you want. For example, you would create a board titled, "Things to Cook," and pin all your recipe ideas there.

Re-Pinning: If you see a pin that you like, all you have to do is click the "re-pin" button and it will automatically go onto the board that you choose.

Basically, once you pin something, it pops up on the feed for everyone to see. So then, a stranger could re-pin one of your ideas, and so on. That's how everything gets spread around.

You can "follow" your friends' boards, or just follow strangers who pin things that you find interesting. You don't have to request someone or approve the people who follow you.

There is also a search bar, so you can find exactly what you are looking for. So if you wanted to find "spring fashion 2012," just type it in, and all the pins that correspond with that topic will pop up.

If you are trying to see a product, if you type a price into the description, it will automatically pop up as a banner across the picture.

On this important date in history I am reminded of a great leader. As we know leadership is often riddled with conflicts that may ignite prejudice, violence even wars. Basically due to ignorance.

We know the stories in history of people belittled, degraded, attacked, unfairly treated in social, commercial, political and legislative aspects just because of the color of their skin or their religion or country of origin.

As a white, highly-educated female born and raised in the United States, I never imagined I would be a target of prejudice. And yet it has happened in recent years. Yes, I've been the subject of awkward glances, snickering, and verbal assault. Why? Because I have a dream. That dream is to reverse the epidemic rate of homeless pets by getting to the root of the problem--education. The mass public knows little to nothing about the plight of homeless pets, especially the soaring number of cats. So I started by setting an example and getting in the trenches. I set out to trap and spay/neuter outdoor cats and feed them regularly so they continue to live humanely. Then I started to use my voice to help the voiceless. Then the conflicts began. The verbal attacks.

Had I quietly gone about just feeding cats, my life would remain the same. Pets are a man's best friend and cats are the most common pet, outnumbering dogs in the U.S. They play an important role in our society. For many owners, they are considered family members and provide unconditional love, companionship and therapuetic benefits. Dogs and even cats are known to save the lives of owners from a fire or flood by alerting them. The stories of unbelievable heroism and hilarious antics are shared daily on the Internet. Pets also entertain. Yet when they are abandoned, dumped in the street, multiplying, suffering, they are viewed as rodents. This is far from the truth.

I soon learned that educating people about a concept riddled with misconceptions launched me into the battle of my life.

Thankfully, today came along, and I'm reminded how Martin Luther King fought against stubborn closed minds with powerful words, public marches-- both peaceful means. Then I glanced at binders of books lined on my bookshelf of other heroes or rather heroines who fought also with the power of speech for their causes. One was a little old lady, a widow, with no political connection or any measurable wealth who single handedly fought against deep-pocket developers, went to Congress and in 1979 saved the Art Deco buildings in South Beach from being demolished. They are artistic and have history. Her name was Barbara Capitman. Then there is Marjory Stoneman Douglas, another little old lady who became an activist at the age of 70+ and fought to save the Florida panther and the Everglades. These were women of vision and conviction. Sure Barbara Capitman was called the Crazy Art Deco Lady and I can only imagine what they must have called Marjory Stoneman Douglas. These figures, heroes remind of the phrase "One person can make a difference". While my goal remains undeterred I pray others will join me sooner than later to make a difference and save lives. To lessen the suffering of animals and humans.

As Robin Roberts on Good Morning America so eloquently said this morning, "today is a reminder to use our voice, a day of service". So I will.

Deborah Barnes--mother, author, hero!

It is said that the best movies of the year are released in December, to top off all other movies of the previous eleven months. Well the same can be said of books. I had the privilege to read and write a review before the official release of The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey.

In today's gloomy world beset by a beleaguered economy, one is uplifted through the dark clouds to the radiant sun by the ordinary. Deborah Barnes is an extra-ordinary person, well almost. She's not a Nobel winning scientist, a war hero, or a reality-series celebrity. Deb is a divorced mother of two sons, in her fifties, who like many of us, lost her job but unlike many, she fought her way back thanks to the lessons of her furry children-- her two, three, seven cats!

She is like many unknown, unsung heroes, everyday people, who clawed her way back to the top. By leveraging her knowledge, her hard work ethic and an inner strength, Deb regained steady footing and reached her long-ago dream--becoming an author. What I admire most about Deb is that during her darkest moments, she did not despair, thanks to her cats. In this rough economy, some pet owners first relinquish their pets, anything to lessen a financial burden. Deb Barnes instead watched and learned from her cats, pets that were content with a little food and affection. Their world was complete and happy.

This is a valuable lesson that we can learn from others less fortunate and that we should give what we need.

Deb inspires me. In reading her book, The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey, I felt we were kindred spirits. Committed cat ladies with a greater cause--to overturn the misperceptions of cats through education. Deb accomplished this with her book. But it's the journey to her goal that makes her a heroine in my eyes. I love stories of ordinary people who are really extraordinary.

This holiday season and New Year, if you're looking for a good book to read, one that combines real life challenges and uplifting humor and hope with a happy ending, then here it is! Thank you for supporting a budding author!

Creativity, fun, camaraderie, sweet treats--those spell out my favorite holiday--Halloween!

Yes how I love dressing in costume and not be myself. This time the opposite happened. I exposed myself, took off my mask of Christine Michaels and showed my true colors, my inner essence and unleashed the animal in me.

Ok so much buildup when you probably guessed my not-so-secret secret. I was Sexy Cat Lady the honorary title bestowed on me by the neighborhood. So if you guessed Cat Woman--you were heading in wrong direction--she was one of the villains in the Batman series. I'm a heroine--or hope to be!

At my office, I went solo and used the occasion to elevate, celebrate and educate the ignorant about the beauty, grace and intelligence of Black Cats. Yes my goal is to turn around the misperceptions of the black cat. So I furiously worked on creating posters of stunning black cats to cover and grace my wall and cubicle "windows". For effect--I brought Johnny Walker, a foster black cat. Was he scared? Of course not! Johnny welcomes humans greeting him like a king. He behaved well and walked around with his striking diamond collar and leash. For the rest of the day he napped on his cat bed under my desk and woke up a few times to ensure I was working diligently (guess who's the new boss?) and turned around for a different sleeping position.

The good news is that more and more retailers are NOT making "scary black cat" fixtures, decor as America is learning that black cats and dogs are the least adopted and the most euthanized. Halloween hurts their image and chances for a furrever home. We still have a long way to go.

It's my birthday! So what celebratory fanfare marked this special day? Well today the weather was atypical and intermittent rain showers kept me indoors--a welcoming change. Often on the run, juggling three jobs and a semblance of a social life, I decided to stay in and just do nothing. Breakfast in bed, feet up (could use a foot massage), reading birthday emails and answering birthday phone calls absorbed my morning and early afternoon. Aah, to be remembered and feel loved. Too bad there aren't more days celebrating a single person.

So October 9, 2011 was a day of relaxation, reflection and gratitude. Gazing through my glass doors and beyond my balcony, the city of Miami lay there before me. What an incredible view.

Today I give thanks for my health, my job, my family and friends and the ability to balance it all. I also gave thanks for the opportunity to give. Does that sound silly? My volunteer work for helping homeless cats (and dogs) has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I knew this was the beginning of new stage in my life.

Then I begin to reflect on goals for the coming year. Or am I suppose to do that on New Year's Eve?
Doesn't matter. I'm in charge of my life! (The advantage of being single). So I made a big decision at the unmemorable age of 43. While it's not cemented and I'm in the research phase, I've decided to create a 501c3 nonprofit organization, to expand on my efforts in raising awareness of the plight of homeless cats and reverse the trend.

There are several wonderful nonprofit organizations focused on rescuing cats and dogs from the streets and from euthanasia at the overcrowded shelter and conducting TNR (trap-neuter-return). We are at war and a small army of dedicated volunteers are in the trenches doing their part.

Something is missing. I recall the book Three Cups of Tea. In the US war against Afghanistan, author Greg Mortenson leads us to the powerful solution--education. After a mountain climbing accident in Pakistan, a group of villagers nurse him back to health. In his recovery he learns of the customs and challenges of the remote village. The children, all the girls, have no education. They are forgotten. The young boys are targets for recruits of the Taliban. Greg vows to return and build a school and he does. The village people are grateful and an average US resident becomes their hero. He becomes a change agent in the war against terrorism. Education was his weapon of choice.

In my daily routine and in speaking to strangers, the average person does not know about the epidemic of homeless pets (approximately 400,00 in Miami Dade county), the number of low-cost clinics to spay/neuter pet and stray cats and dogs ($25), and how to recognize the universal sign of a sterilized cat. Imagine if one in every five people did? What would that mean to half of the stray kittens that die every day under the age of 8 weeks. It would reverse the cruelty and suffering of strays and homeless animal population.

So I begin my homework of the endless legal paperwork to file, the fees (amounting to at least $2,000), and the list goes on. I begin a new stage in my life! Obstacles, more hard work, sweat, tears and joy, all await me.

Steve Jobs a Legend

My heart is heavy today in learning of the passing of a great American figure, Steve Jobs, the driving force behind one of the greatest American brands and business models, Apple.

So much can be said and is being said by the media and bloggers and users of Apple products from the young to senior citizens...I imagine a new record may be set in tributes to this icon who was a visionary leader and humble at the same time. Everyone admired Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs exemplified numerous qualities. What inspired me the most is a rare personal moment that he shared during a commencement speech at Stanford University. In referring to his ousting at Apple "When I was rejected, I was still in love". Even though the Apple computer company pushed him out at its pinnacle (the first wave), Steve still had a passion and followed it. He still had ideas and no one, no company, nothing would stop him from following his true love. In continuing to prove his incredible talents and vision at Pixar and other companies, Apple brought him back and Apple rose to meteoric highs.

For some, coming from a lower middle class family, money is a motivator. For Steve, not lacking in basic necessities, technology occupied his fascination and motivation. At the age of 17, he even picked up the phone and called the President of Intel for computer parts.

Steve became rich not at the expense of shareholders, but with shareholders. So when he returned to Apple, he did not earn a typical six or seven figure CEO salary with gross bonuses. He was content with $1 a year. ONE DOLLAR.

Steve Jobs provided "jobs". A technology that broke new ground and found users in all age groups demanded a premium and customers were willing to pay. He went against the grain that Internet content should be free and charged a dollar or two. But $1.99 x the number of people who downloaded an iTune translates into HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars. Genius.

Greatness like Steve Jobs come once in a lifetime. There is DaVinci, Thomas Edison, Sam Walton, and in my adult lifetime, Steve Jobs. I am honored and will remember his words during times when I feel alone and defeated in my quest to follow my heart and make a difference.

Below is a video from ABC News recapping his life. To quote Jobs about death, as life's "single best invention of life", as a change agent, to clear out the old and bring in the new, "You are already naked, there is no reason not to follow your heart".

Christine's Hurricane Preparation--It's Exhaustive

Well you're probably wondering why I'm writing about hurricanes when my blog is meant to be joyous. Well to that point, PREVENTION is my middle name. As one of my strengths I want to share valuable lessons.

After listening to all the various news reports post Hurricane Irene and residents in states like Vermont that never experienced a hurricane, I decided to share my list and it's more than your usual canned food, batteries and flashlights. As a native Floridian and having lived in Miami since 1997, I have learned from experience. It's exhausting preparing for a hurricane but I fared better than most after Hurricane Wilma. It was disturbing to learn of residents struggling without power for three weeks. Imagine taking cold showers or worse, not having a hair dryer or curling iron? Horrors. Yours truly invested in a battery powered generator for small appliances. While most neighbors looked like something the cat dragged in, they would stare at me "You looked like you walked out of a salon!". I say "Prepare for the worst and hope for the best".

1. Select a shelter that is above ground but does not require you to take an elevator or kill your knees descending 20+ flight of stairs. WHY? During hurricane Wilma that impacted Miami, it hit hardest in downtown Miami, my home. While many buildings in Miami are supposed to have one elevator working on a generator, the fact is after Wilma, many of the NEW buildings failed when it came to functioning generator/elevator or even running water. Residents in condo highrises were forced to climb down the stairs and stay with friends or in hotels. Currently I live in a new highrise on the 39th floor. Trust me, I will be seeking refuge in my OLD condo building on the 4th floor.

2. On that note if you don't want your home smelling like a sewer, fill your bathtub with water. You will need that water to flush your toilet and for other urgencies if there is no running water in your home or condo or apartment.

3. Unplug all devices and move any furniture or items you don't want damaged should the windows shatter. A false sense of security are hurricane shutters. They do NOT prevent windows from shattering. They DO protect your windows from projectiles. During Hurricane Andrew, we learned that houses with shutters saw their windows explodes. Now in new buildings with hurricane "windows", don't count on them staying intact.

4. In a condo building, camp out in the hallway corridor. That's what we always do as it's the most secure interior. In an apartment building, stay in the most interior room with no windows. Keep your cell phone with you at all times. Or bring in regular phone with long extension.

5. Invest in a regular land phone line and have old fashion phone with push buttons that don't require plugging into a wall. Who would have thought that old-fashioned technology "the land phone line" would be the only source of connection and to ask for help. Even before any hurricane strikes, cell phone usage is nonexistent. Naturally during the hurricane forget it. Cable service was also down for both television viewing and internet. Our cable service was down for a week post hurricane. Recently I made my elderly mother get a land phone line from AT&T. Yes it costs more money than the new internet based phone services but this way we can stay in touch easily. The downside, AT&T is horrific with operations. They never came out after my mother took a day off of work. It was a nightmare getting them to come out. We are anti AT&T but they are only company that offers land line.

6. Ensure you have enough clothing, food, water for a week. This is NOT the way to lose weight.
7. Fill your gas tank! So many gasoline stations were closed after Hurricane Wilma, cars were running on fumes and fading in the middle of the road.

8. STOP AT NONFUNCTIONING TRAFFIC LIGHTS. It's amazing how many people forget the traffic laws. If you approach a traffic light that's nonfunctioning, you have to treat it as a stop sign.

9. Park your car inside an elevated concrete garage like bank building. Plan ahead. Talk to your local building owners and ask if they would allow it for hurricanes. Too many cars are damaged or destroyed with fallen trees or damaged from flooded rains.

10. Make copies of important documents. Photocopy or Scan documents and store them in digital warehouse. This should be done during nonhurricane season.

11. Never leave your pets at home. Bring them with you or drop off at secure shelter for pets. If they accompany you, bring plenty of pet food, water, and paper towels, disinfectant spray and plastic bags to clean up after their bathroom business while indoors during the hurricane.

12. No matter where you are staying, even in your home, have a small luggage ready with clothes and essentials in case you have to evacuate suddenly.

13. BUY RAIN BOOTS and raincoat! Most hurricanes leave behind a trail of streets converted to rivers.

14. Have playing cards and poker chips and other board games handy for long nights with no television or Internet. The silver lining in hurricane, it brought together families and neighbors and every evening was one big barbecue or dinner party! Oh yes, bottles of wine bring levity post hurricane during cleanup and recovery and the wait for power to return.

15. Invest in sternos and aluminum pans with frames to warm up foods. Many party stores sell portable sternos. Another option is little habachi grill and charcoal with lighter fluid. Be sure to buy LONG stem matches. If you have meats in freezer or fridge, cook those first. Save dry food for later.

16. Have one or several coolers filled with ice. Even if the ice melts, you may be able to buy ice nearby and refill the cooler to keep water and drinks cool.

17. Buy battery operated radio to keep up with news.

One of the most important lessons I learned during Hurricane Wilma, while it was only a category 1, the damage and destruction was similar to a hurricane 3. Why? We are facing a double natural disaster. Microbursts or mini tornadoes spun out after Wilma. This explained why there was no drop of rain on the streets but many windows were blown out of buildings and automobiles! This is why it's extremely important to stay away from windows, stay in interior room, stay on low floor but not ground level.

Be prepared! Be Safe!

Last Sunday was a dual celebration. The exhibit of famed celebrity photographer Rob Zuckerman, and the appearance of two cast members from Charlie's Angels at the Betsy Ross Hotel in South Beach. Which one won most attention? The exhibit! The photos that hung in the lobby, the downstairs bar/lounge and in the guestroom corridor pulled you in and one is mesmerized, addicted, reading.

The black and white photos were my favorite. Why is it they seem to tell a deeper story than a photo in color? The shades of black and grey and shadows of light all tell the story. Photographers amaze me. Robert Zuckerman has spent 20 years photographing Hollywood celebrities on film sets. His interest in his subjects later included average people.

According to Lydia Martin, Miami Herald:

Whether he’s training his lens on megawatt movie stars or taking impromptu shots of regular folks he encounters on elevators and street corners, in car rental joints and hotel corridors, photographer Robert Zuckerman is after the same thing: that fleeting, unguarded moment when the camera disappears, artifice drops and subject and shooter really start talking.

The one photo that captured this caption and also my favorite was a black and white of Morgan Freeman. Quiet, pensive, a million miles away. What occupies is mind?

Zuckerman’s presence behind the lens won’t be denied in the low-light portrait of Will Smith, caught in a wistful, weary moment at the end of a gray day spent shooting a new album cover.

So how does he do it? Is it practice perfected? Is it Science?

Zuckerman learned early on that a mild-mannered style always trumps an in-your-face stance when you’re trying to get people to drop their guard in front of a contraption that can come across as obtrusive, impolite, even thieving. That low-key approach is critical for a photographer who values emotional content above anything else he might be able to capture with his cameras.

“I think with anything you do, the intention you put behind it resonates in the results. It’s not something you can easily put into words, or teach to someone else, but if you have the intention of finding a glimpse of someone’s true character, that somehow comes through. It’s like magic. Or alchemy. It’s about a connection you can make, even for a moment, with another human being.” [Miami Herald, August 22, 2011]

How does a photographer capture that look, that mystery, the essence? I have to agree, it's alchemy. Probably a little practice too. His subjects are treated the same, both celebrities and average Joes.
