Becoming a "Beauty Vegan": The first step to veganism

I want to explain the importance of using cruelty free makeup in this post. Some may have heard me talk about this before in the blog "The Kind Life", Alicia Silverstone's Vegan blog (see the blog HERE). It's a subject that I'm very passionate about.....

I own a cruelty free/vegan line of makeup (www.christopherdrummond.com), and have had it for five years. I like to call myself a "beauty vegan". This means that I do not use any skincare or products that have any animal products in them at all.
Being a beauty vegan takes due diligence. You need to not only read your labels but know the ingredients you are reading. For instance, Lanolin is a common ingredient in cosmetics, and is usually animal-derived. I've found that most animal derived ingredients are "hidden" and sound like any other ingredient ("carmine" is a colorant that is literally made from crushed bugs). I just think it's the right thing to do.....after all, using animal ingredients so we can look prettier is just ridiculous. Especially when there are plenty of plant-derived ingredients we can use....
In owning a vegan makeup line, Ive noticed that many vegans don't think about vegan cosmetic brushes. the majority of makeup brushes on the market are made in China and are animal hair! The reason I bring up "Made in China" is because they have no animal cruelty laws, so they can handle animals in any way they want, and many times, they do. Be sure to check and see if your brushes are cruelty free. Email your favorite cosmetic company and request that they use only vegan approved brushes, like Christopher Drummond Beauty does!
So, whether you are a vegan, or are considering becoming one, don't forget your cosmetics! It's one of the simplest ways to become a vegan and to be cruelty free, but many people don't think about it.
Be sure all cosmetics state they are Cruelty Free, or have the "bunny" symbol on it. This is the only way to be sure....

Solution for Eczema: Cocoa Butter or Skincandu

What is the best solution for Eczema?

Q: Christopher - it seems a small patch of exzema (dry skin) has found a home on my face, and I can't seem to evict it. I use basic lotion on the spot, but alas, I'm failing. (even bought some oil of olay. gross.) But now I am turning to you. What do I use to rid my face of eczema and keep it from returning?

i recommend two things:
1) stop using chemical laden products like Olay.
2) Pure Cocoa Butter is great for Eczema
3) A product called Combat Ready Balm is amazing for skin conditions, plus it's organic and all natural. I LOVE it. It's only available online, though.

Is Titanium Dioxide in Mineral Makeup Safe?

Q: Is mineral makeup bad for your lungs (inhalation)? Should I use liquids instead?

A: It is unsafe to inhale certain minerals, like Titanium Dioxide, when they are so small in the nanoparticle form. It is known to cause scarring and is also a possible carcinogen.

However, not all mineral companies use nanoparticles. One of the benefits to powders is that they contain a natural SPF, choose a pressed one if you are afraid of inhaling it.

Liquid formulas can be good as well but you have to be careful because liquids contain more ingredients that you need to look out for and avoid — like parabens, fragrance, petrochemicals. Use the Skin Deep Database to see the safety of your products.

This is from the Campaign for Safe Cosemetics:
"Avoid personal care products that advertise use of nanotechnology or nano ingredients. Because no labeling laws exist for nanotechnology in any type of consumer product anywhere in the world, nanotech may be difficult to avoid completely. One thing you can do: contact the customer service department of cosmetics companies whose products you use, and ask if they use nanotech. If so, let them know that you won't be buying their products until they remove the nano particles."

In the end, it's all about your preference, and your due diligence. read your labels and do your research!!!

Prep

First clean and prep the skin. This includes sunscreen, serum, and moisturizer, if necessary. Be sure to let product absorb into the skin for a minute or two before applying makeup.

Conceal Skin Defects

Use a hydrating concealer, such as the CDB Duo Phase Concealer. Apply small amounts under the eyes and in the inner eye, on blemishes, dark spots, etc. Tap the concealer in the skin, don’t rub—this makes the concealer not look more natural.

Apply Foundation

Since you’ve used a cream concealer, you should set it with a powder foundation. While loose powders may be a little messy, they are brilliant at helping to set the makeup under it. Plus, by applying a product such as Veludo Velvet Foundation, you can build your coverage from light to heavy coverage. Plus powder absorbs oil and balances the skin.

Finishing Powder

Finishing powder helps to “set” the makeup. This adds a layer of product that will help to keep your makeup and skin looking fresh.

Apply Blush

Kim Kardashian is obsessed with blush. She uses ginger-type colors that have a medium amount of finely milled shimmer. This helps to give the skin a beautiful glow and flushed color, all in one.
