Wow, a crazy spring helping to save dogs from shelters in Ontario and Quebec. I’ve learned so much about dogs of all kinds and they gave me so much more.

Daisy

What a cuddly bulldog Daisy is. She snores and makes all manner of noises. When she came she had sore paws from frostbite. Found as a stray in Quebec, dead of winter, cold and alone. Poor girl has a big C-Section scar, and was probably the mother of at least one litter.

She was adopted by a lovely couple in Etobicoke where she has a very nice bed by a sweet perching window, where she can look out over the neighbourhood. We are so happy for her and her new family.

Goldie

Poor Goldie was a return from a previous adopter who just wasn’t able to give her the life she needed. A lovely dog who just needed to get out there and learn about the world a little. Long walks and persistent corrections solved her on-leash problems. I spent a good amount of time working with her in the dog park because doggie social skills are important. Eventually she was calm around strange dogs and learned some sorely needed communication skills.

When people came to adopt her, I went through one by one all the complaints of the previous owner showing each time that Goldie didn’t have those problems any more. She is now thriving with her new family who are teachers and are giving her the strong guidance she craves.

Filly

Filly was super easy. My first German Shepherd, I had no idea what to expect. By our second walk she somehow managed to tell me she wanted to play catch. We started playing with sticks, then balls, then stuffed toys, and so on. She just loved it and would make miraculous aerobatic catches. So fun. I got strict about how she give the ball back to me, teaching her the command “closer”. Then I made it more difficult telling her to put the ball in various places like in a hole at the dog park. So smart.

She was adopted by one of the directors of the rescue. An inside job I guess. She now lives in Mississauga where she enjoys open spaces and a huge back yard.

Jasper

What a hard luck case. Jasper had cancer, and was previously adopted out while still recovering from surgery. He sadly came back to the rescue after biting a child. We’ll never know why, and weren’t able to recreate a similar aggression. We did see some territorial guarding that I wasn’t able to address, but I did work on his confidence and his ability to just “calm the fuck down”. After a few weeks he began to relax and enjoy the outdoors, instead of always being on alert or hunting for squirrels.

He was adopted by a really great fella who is just like me but with a nicer condo and car. He took to heart everything I said about making sure Jasper isn’t left in a position to make another bad decision. Jasper now enjoys trips to a beautiful lakefront cottage where he gets to run free and chase waves. Apparently he played in the water so much his first day that he was to sore to get up the next morning. He’s a much more fit dog now, with daily jogs with his new best friend.

Ringo

After Jasper, I wanted to try working with a small dog. I was never a huge small dog fan, but then Ringo came into our lives and stole out heart. He was the first foster we got to name ourselves. We chose Ringo because he’s bigger than life but a little Star. Loved everywhere he goes, its hard to understand how he could become homeless. He is a smart little dog, who doesn’t really like to be made to do circus tricks. If you hold out on the treat to long, he would get on the couch and bark us. Which is hilarious and hard to disagree with. Mostly though he’s flat on his back getting belly rubs.

He was quickly adopted by a young couple who will love him and cuddle him and spoil him…well hopefully not to rotten.

So after having a perfect dog like Crosby, who was adopted by a wonderful family with another dog, I was thinking this fostering thing is fun and easy. Then they dropped off Ames. Here you have a dog that will really give you the love, but…and its a big but. The beautiful American Eskimo needs what all American Eskimo need, strong leadership. Ames is young, and has been trained with treats, but the previous owners failed to progress that to proper everyday expected behaviour. The result was a bossy little dog that only behaves when treats are on offering.

Fortunately the thing Ames is most bossy about is petting. He has some food issues and gets scared of strange men who try to pet him. The first few weeks were really tough but with the help of Ola from Paws Above, he has calmed down a lot and I’ve learned how to command his obedience. When he went away for a week with Ola for a bootcamp, I missed him like crazy.

Check him out on Petfinder.

Crosby is a sweet dog I’ve been fostering the past three weeks. He’s great to be around, friendly and well behaved. He was rescued from a high kill shelter in Quebec where he had only one week to find a new home. Fortunately Larysa Struk saw him and insisted on taking him into T.E.AM. Dog Rescue’s foster program. Fate had it that I was looking for something to do that would get me out and about, as well as help a dog which has been very rewarding in the past.

But apparently they are doing it the other way around, and I almost fell for it while trying to sell my EX1 video camera.

The fraudsters putt a lot of effort into their hook. They search Kijiji for high priced items, then send fake Interac emails that make it seem like they are holding the money until they get a postage tracking number. The key to the hook is to get the victim to ship via a regular mail provider like Canada Post. The reason is that once a traditional postal service takes possession of a letter, it becomes the property of the recipient, who can then log into the postal website and redirect the package where ever they wish. They used some poor woman’s ID and address to cement their lies.

Fortunately this isn’t the first time Canada Post had heard of this scam and I was able to recover most of my property before it left the postal outlet. Once it is moving through the system, Canada Post had trouble stopping it, and once its in the US Postal Service’s hands its gone. Therefore the Fraudster had to be persistent and led me on by providing a new fake Interac email which says that there is an 8 hour delay in the delivery of the money. I forwarded all these email to the actual Interac fraud team, who responded quickly stating that the emails were not from them.

Never ship anything without sending the Interac email to be verified by Interac, and never ship via Canada Post if you are selling over the internet.

As a new hobby, I’ve been exploring the fountain style sodas and their fascinating history. Hand made soda fist came to the US in the early 1800s, by 1880 it was an outright sensation becoming a hallmark of the american lifestyle. Today soda has a bad rap, corrupted by the sugar pushers to make a profit, the drinks contain a deadly amount of sugar. Even a thin person like myself can put up a gut by having just one can of coke a day. That’s a far way from the cure alls and health remedies that pharmacists envisioned.

The lemon ice cream soda pictured has less than half the sugar of same product made with bottle pop. It uses agava which has a glycemic index of less a quarter of that of table sugar. Makes you feel better about that late night snack.

There is so much to learn about soda, making flavours from scratch, collecting the supplies and other secret ingredients. One day I guess I’ll get a better seltzer making system, but for now the biggest challenge is finding phosphoric acid here in Canada.

Enjoy this little old time soda fountain comedy video.
