What I Have Learnt About Learning and the Lesson continues...

Over the past few months I have been going for interviews in a cot of companies in KL. And what I find in a lot of the job applications that there a lot of positions for Learning and Development managers, senior managers, Chief Learning Officers and so I just submitted my applications thinking that it was time to move on to try to gain new experiences and so on. What to my surprise is that a lot of these companies were not looking for Learning and Development managers, they were looking for Training Managers and are very blur about the word Learning.

Now, don't get me wrong- there is still a need for training programs and so on but it seems to me that most of these companies- and mind you I'm not talking about the 500 manpowered companies, I'm talking about staff force of thousands, still have not understood or have clue what Learning means. Learning is about the person not the program. The person can sit through a program but may not have learnt anything. Yes, they can go through the motion of the classroom games and activities but learning does not necessary begin there. Learning begins when you start practicing or applying the knowledge in an uncontrolled environment and without further instruction. Learning also does not necessary means you get it in a classroom from a teacher, lecturer, trainer or facilitator- you can learn from your supervisor by means of observation then practice or from your peers. You could have found an information in the web then applied it. You can learn from someone else's mistake by means of a casual conversation of sharing and so on.

I have learnt from going into interviews what I need to learn is about leadership and business acumen and I will devote sometime weekly to reading from some of the leadership books available in the local bookstore or from Amazon dot com.

The point is that companies spend a lot on training programs but do not look at how they should spend creating corporate intelligence. It's not just about saving money, it's about capturing knowledge with the assistance of technology available today, tag it then distribute it to those who need to learn or are looking for the knowledge. They spend a lot on LMS but not optimizing the potential, adoption and usage of the system. They buy a lot of eLearning off the shelves but not incorporating it into the competencies for recommendation and prays and hopes that people that the courses.

Most companies I went for interview even bans social networking in the company in fear of what might get out. Technology is a tool, how you choose to use it is up to you. Like a hammer can be a tool for building houses for shelter and it can also be an evidence in a courtroom for a murder case. The tool is your hands and you choose how to use it.

Today, I am sharing about what I have learnt so far about learning and I still have a lot ot learn...

It's been a while since I have blogged but yet I have learnt so much these past few months and learning more still. Past few months we were looking at LMS and whether we should upgrade or buy a new LMS. I am learning that more LMS are trying to integrate social networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter, etc in its product features. It would be interesting to see how this changes learning initiatives in the company. For instance, 15 years ago when your supervisor were to say you are going for training, it would mean sending you to a classroom. While today, if the supervisor asks the same question- it may not be in the classroom or you can say "I have learnt how to dismantle an iPhone and change battery from YouTube".

Training materials no longer comes in thick boring manuals that takes you ages to flip through the first chapter- today, you can have illustrations from CD Roms, podcast and so on. I might be thinking of placing a camera in every training room and record them and store the recordings somewhere where I can manage it and distribute it to more potential learners out there (although I don't think I can record some of the paid trainers) maybe in a form of mp4 or avi. Then you can search for relevant information and find what you need now and learn it faster.

The only real competitive edge is having a workforce who can learn, adapt and innovate faster than your competitors- I learnt that from reading "the Fifth Discipline" by Peter Senge- a really good and insightful book. But it took me a long time to read it, a lot of things to ponder.

So blogging world- I am back!

Recently we were invited to give a short talk about Technology in Learning- basically using Second Life in learning. Few common questions, did we spent millions in the island? How effective is it? Our answer were, nope it did not cost that much and we are still in the stage of testing so it is too early to tell the effectiveness.

Effectiveness is often dependent on design of the training program and the more you plan about how the users will be engaged in learning using technology, the more effective it would be. Take for example, if I want someone to sit through 4 eLearning course of 3 hours each in one week, it might not work as one might not find the time or the self discipline to complete the courses. So what you might have done is to set yourself up for failure.

Yesterday I had a meeting with my GM and discussed about a project and he kept asking the questions why. Maybe I had spent too much time thinking about what to do and how do we use Second Life and had not spent enough time thinking WHY should we use Second Life. By asking WHY first, we can make an investment of 500K seem like 500 instead of 5M.

Why Should We Use Second Life As A Tool for Learning
I am sure I heard this somewhere before, the benefits:
1) Reduce travel costs
2) Increase learning opportunities
3) Engaging learnings

But what about FUN? Should not we consider designing a training in Second Life to be fun? "FUN??? What FUN? We pay to train these people to learn. Not to have FUN." an image of your GM screaming back at you when you suggest that. What if they can play and learn? What if by playing, we are able to increase, not only engagement but also retention. All this depends on design.

"Instead of making people have to learn, we should make people want to learn." This is what my GM always challenge us. Make training something people would want to come to instead of force to. Second Life can be used to make learning fun.

But Second Life is more than just a learning tool. It can be a communication tool, a electronic white paper for 3D design, etc. The only thing limiting us is our imagination on how to use it.
