Catching Up...Mini Update

I'm back from my short hiatus, and I am so thankful and blessed by all of you...my sweet and faithful followers! I appreciate ALL of your very sweet e-mails and sweet comments sent checking in on me...it really did mean so much!!! Although I apparently have caught the flu that is getting passed around to everyone...things are improving with my health. So, I feel I can begin providing some attention back to the blog. I've already got LOTS of ideas to share swirling around! In addition, I've been quite busy with some projects while I was sick (some of you might remember me stating in the past on here that crafts often provide a great diversion when I'm feeling bad). In addition, I had several orders that I fulfilled over the holidays.

I thought I might share some pictures of some of the projects that I completed over the holidays/blog break and use this post as kind of a "catch up"..."what did you do over the Christmas/Blog Break" post. I might go into detail/provide tutorials later. However, as for now, here are some projects I've recently completed and sold.

Have you worked with Deco Mesh? I LOVE IT!!! And, I've sold/made several wreaths with it over the holidays. These were customized for each individual, per request. I just love how they turn out! Here are some of my most recent ones: (if I get enough response/request...I might provide a tutorial on how I complete one of these...that is if I get several request). Otherwise, if anyone is interested in purchasing, I can also custom make...feel free to contact me and I can provide a quote...depending on request, size, etc. Would love to know what everyone thinks??

This Christmas, I also made several Christmas balls for Christmas gifts...each personalized and customized differently.

Regular followers will know that I have shared apothecary jars in the past....the next two pictures are two sets of apothecary jars that I customized per two individual's requests. I thought they ended up turning out adorable. On both accounts, I was provided color guidelines....and then I was provided ability to use my own creativity.

I LOVE personalized items!!! Below are personalized items I completed...one is a wooden balsa letter, mod podged and decorated for a gift. The other was a bag that was personalized for my husband's boss for Christmas with fabric paint. I did this by cutting out a stencil with my silhouette and then painting the stencil with fabric paint...LOVE IT!!

So, this is a short "mini version" of what I have done on my mini blog break. I have lots more to share as well. I have several inspirational/encouraging posts in the works, as well as sharing with you some other projects that I've got going on. By the way....if you see anything that you were interested in, feel free to contact me! I'm more than willing to work with you in customizing any product. I'm thinking about opening up a shop online. I've been just selling to people locally that hear by word of mouth...suggestions from those of you that sell online?

One of my next projects to look forward to: our kitchen remodel...have you heard about the product Bondera to assist with tiling? What about using Envirotex resin and paint on your laminate countertops to make them look like granite? Well...get ready for some tutorials, and before and afters in our mini kitchen makeover...SO HAPPY with our results!!!

Hello everyone...I hope everyone has had a great holiday with your family. Just wanted to provide a small update that I am still here! I appreciate all of my followers and love you all...

As you all know, I live with a chronic medical condition, and the past month and a half has been more difficult, so I have had to place getting healthy on the front burner lately. However, once I get my "two feet back on the ground"...I plan to be back to share with you again.

Thank you all for your continued support and friendship. I look forward to sharing some exciting projects as well as some great lessons I've learned during this health "hiccup" as well.

C.R.A.F.T. Package Pals Exchange with Jeanette....Homemade Gift Exchange, DIY Gift/Craft Ideas

I had the funnest time participating in the Package Pals Exchange with C.R.A.F.T. Package Pals, which happens 4 times each year...but this was my first time to sign up for the exchange. If you want to find out more information...just click on the link, and Jamie (C.R.A.F.T.'s blog author) has a question and answer section....SO MUCH FUN!!!

My Package Pal was Jeanette from Sweet Jeanette and Real Women Eat. Jeanette shared that she loved to cook/bake. She also shared that she liked monograms and polka dots. She stated that her favorite color was hot pink and that she liked blue, purples and red. She has red/strawberries in her kitchen. So I took this information to develop my "package" for my "pal", Jeanette.

I perused some of Jeanette's blogs as well as her Pinterest boards, and she had a Bakery sign pinned. My wheels started spinning. I make personalized signs, and I had already asked for the information to complete this sign. In addition, since Jeanette stated that she loved to bake and cook, this was something that I thought maybe she wouldn't make for herself...but, maybe she would actually like it in her "Strawberry kitchen". I added "polka dot" ribbon to hang the sign since she stated that she loved polka dots!

This was a cute "red" little cutting board that I added a "H" monogram to...one can never have too many cutting boards in my opinion...especially if you love to cook! And, Jeanette and I share the love of monograms.

I included some "polka dot" and "red stripe" clothespins...I left them for Jeanette to make however she wishes...magnets, tacks on board, etc.

I cut some Recipe Cards out of card stock of Jeanette's favorite colors with my Silhouette machine. I also purchased a kitchen oven mitt, kitchen towel, and kitchen wash cloths for the package. I included two of my most requested recipes as well.

Finally, since Jeanette stated that she likes teacups...I decided to try the craft technique that I had been meaning to try: I wrote phrases on a teacup with a sharpie and cured in stove. I utilized Jeanette's Pinterest board for this as well. Jeanette had a "Quotes" board...and, I pulled quotes that she had "pinned" on the cup and saucer. Once I was finished writing with the Sharpie, I put it in my oven for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Then, once cooled, I tied the "polka dot" bow around the handle...SO CUTE!!!

And, that was my package that I sent to my Package Pal, Jeanette. Since this was a "Package Pal Exchange", do you want to see what Jeanette sent me:

I received an AMAZING package from my "Package Pal", Jeanette. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE purses...and isn't this purse PERFECT for the fall season?

One of the things that I shared with my "Pal", Jeanette, was that I was wanting to learn how to sew better (in fact one of my early Christmas presents from my husband is sewing classes so that I can learn to sew better). A lot of my package ended up revolving around sewing...isn't that neat?

I've included a picture of ALL my goodies in the top left corner and then some close ups. In addition to my purse, I also received a keychain, business cardholder, and beautiful towel. In addition, Jeanette included two patterns (one that even includes the material to start me on my sewing journey)...how thoughtful is that?

Finally, I received this GORGEOUS handmade Christmas banner. Just so that I could take some quick pictures, I took my fall banner down and hung this one up for pictures...isn't is beautiful? I had also shared that Christmas was my favorite time of year...I can't wait to decorate with it when I pull out all of my Christmas decor.

I enjoyed this experience and my first "Package Pal" exchange with Jeanette. She hit the proverbial "nail on the head" with her package, and from our correspondence...I believe we were both very happy with our packages.

This was so much fun...getting to know someone else...and the element of surprise! I look forward to the next "Package Pal" exchange, and would be blessed to have another partner as amazing as Jeanette. I would encourage you to join in next time...it was so much fun!

I recently was honored to guest post with Hani at Craftionary. I shared my "Love" Apothecary Set tutorial, which is part of our "mini" bathroom update. I'm re posting the Apothecary Set post that I shared with Hani and her followers, with modifications as necessary. I have also recently completed several Apothecary sets for others, and I plan to share a follow up post soon. I hope you enjoy and would love to hear from you!

Do you ever get tired of the decor in one of your rooms, and it is simply time for an update? Well, I have recently finished sharing tutorials of a mini makeover of our master bathroom. We were ready for an update. While we were happy with orchids, chinese symbols of peace, love, etc. as our master bath decor in the past, we were ready for a change. We settled on the theme of a more personal nature as evidenced in our Wedding Lyric Canvas Art , Inspirational Subway Art, Twine Personalized Canvas and Personalized Burlap Bubble Wreath. So, now the theme of our master bathroom is basically centered on "love" and personalization, with use of natural materials like burlap, twine, etc.

As part of the mini makeover, I made a "Love" Apothecary Jar Set. My former Apothecary Jar Set was (and actually still is) an extremely popular post on my blog, and there is considerable popularity on the blogosphere, Pinterest, etc. of various other Apothecary Jar Sets. So, in an effort to show how easy it is to make and personalize a set of your own, I am sharing the tutorial for my "Love" Apothecary Jar Set from my updated master bathroom series so that you can make a set of your own if you were interested. One of the main things that I like about Apothecary Jars is the ability to personalize each individual set. Before we get started with the tutorial, here is a picture of our "Love" Apothecary Jar Set:

The final apothecary jar set: candlesticks and lids painted in ORB paint;
Mason jars adhered to candlesticks; Twine trimming both top and bottom of scrapbook paper wrapping
Wooden letters spelling "LOVE" spray painted w/ ORB paint and hot glued onto jar for finishing touch.

Materials used on this set of apothecary jars:

Candlesticks (picked up at a yard sale; see before picture below)
Mason Jars
Oil Rubbed Bronze (ORB) spray paint (to paint brass candlesticks, mason jar tops, and wooden letters)
Fiskars cutting tool (see picture of cutting tool, with a piece of the scrapbook paper in cut process picture below)
Scrapbook paper of choice (12" x 12" chosen for this project...approximately a scrapbook page and 1/4 used for this project)
Twine
Wooden Letters
Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun
E6000 Glue

Brass Candlesticks of varying sizes...The Base of the Apothecary Jars

Now, let's see how we made this apothecary set:

Spray paint all of the items that need spray painting. I spray painted the brass candlesticks, mason jar lids, as well as the "L,O,V,E" wooden letters with ORB paint. I did two coats of ORB paint for full coverage.
After the spray paint is dry on the candlesticks, attach the mason jars to the candlesticks with E6000 adhesive (I LOVE THIS STUFF when it comes to heavy duty adhesion). Let these sit for a while to ensure a strong adhesion. The longer wait to dry to provide a stronger bond, the better...just my two cents.
While waiting on the "paint to dry" and the mason jar and candlestick adhesion with E6000 to adhere, cut the scrapbook paper with the Fiskars cutting tool (to get a crisp, clean cut). Once the mason jar and candlesticks have established bond, wrap the scrapbook paper around the mason jar (measure to ensure each scrapbook paper wrap is equal in size and fit prior to adhering to mason jar). Then, hot glue the scrapbook paper around each mason jar.
Finish and embellish the top and bottom edges of the scrapbook paper on the mason jar by hot gluing twine on top of both the top and bottom edges, since it needed a little embellishment. In addition, this project specifically needed an extra "natural" material. (Remember, I mentioned earlier in the post that we were also implementing a natural material theme in our master bathroom as well...this helps to tie together some of the natural material from other areas in the master bath update.) I applied the hot glue in small areas to make adhesion of the twine on the edging of the paper more manageable (be careful not to burn fingers!!). Start the hot gluing of the twine at the scrapbook seam in the back each time. (This prevents a "twine seam" right in the front of your apothecary jar).
The final touch...add the wording/letters, in this case "LOVE" to the jars. (I wanted to personalize our jars with these words to fit in with our new decor and to symbolize the theme of our bathroom mini update; however, wording and whether it is added to a set of apothecary jars simply depends on each individual person...).

As you can see, these apothecary jars were specifically tailored for our project in our bathroom; however, the concepts are universal. I wanted to show you one way that they can be decorated...but, there are so many different ideas that could be incorporated and just a tweak here and there based on this basic tutorial and you could have a set of your own!!! Use of materials can be similar. The embellishments are how the apothecary jars could be completely personalized.

To personalize these in a different way...scrapbook paper could be completely different; different words (or not at all); different items inside the jar (or none at all); can use to change out for holiday decor; instead of ORB paint, a different paint...all a matter of preference. The neat thing: one's personality can shine bright in the personalization. The sky is the limit when you think of personalization. (In fact, I've recently completed several sets for people...customized to their liking!)

Repost of Guest Post for "Reaching for the Fringe..." Common Misconceptions of Chronic "Invisible" Illnesses and How They Affect Both the Individual and the Caregiver

I recently was able to guest post with an amazing couple, Carly and Ryan, on their blog, Reaching for Fringe, regarding "Common Misconceptions Regarding Chronic Invisible Illnesses and How They Affect Both the Individual and Their Caregivers". I asked my husband, Michael, to co-author the guest post with me in discussing how these common misconceptions (that we have personally experienced) of chronic illness and how it not only affects me...but, he being the spouse/caregiver...as well. Following is a rendition of the same post that ran on Carly and Ryan's blog (which I encourage you to check out), with a bit of modifications. I hope you find it informative and encouraging, and I, as always, love feedback and would love to pray and encourage you in anyway...just let me know! (I've deleted some of the introductory material, which can be found on my "About Me" page...or, as a follower...you probably already know).

My husband, Michael, and I have now been on our journey, dealing with my battle with several chronic illnesses for about six years now. My journey with chronic illness began 3 weeks after our honeymoon, and if you wish, you can read more about it here. Our marriage took a lot of adjustments, a lot of prayers, and honestly some tears at time. When one spouse is chronically ill, it will ALWAYS affect the other. There is no way around it. Thankfully, I have been blessed with a God fearing husband. And, while we neither one will pretend nor assert to be experts, we can share our experiences over the last few years. Hopefully, we can provide some insight into the pain and hurt that some "well meaning" statements can cause as well as the difference in perspective from me (the chronically ill) and Michael (the chronically ill's spouse/caregiver). Finally, we should always keep in mind that in dealing with others, sick or not, we should do so in love...not knowing what each person may be dealing with or going through on any given day. Although not a definitive list, here is our list of 10 common misconceptions that we have encountered on a fairly regular basis regarding my chronic illness, and our responses.

1. If you go to the "right" doctor, or "enough" doctors...you will find a cure.

Erin: During the past six years, I have been in and out of so many doctor's offices...looking for help/someone to make me feel better. Upon suggestions of others even, I felt like I chased rabbits down rabbit holes for "cures"...I don't do that anymore. I take a more balanced approach now. I've learned to ask more questions and I've become more prudent in my approach to my medical care. Sometimes this hurts people's feelings because they are normally truly just wanting to help. However, I've been poked, prodded, and unnecessarily experimented on due to "wanting to find a cure". I had to come to a realization...I HAVE A CHRONIC ILLNESS. There is no cure, only maintenance and doing my best to take care of myself so that I can have the best and most fulfilling life that I can have. There is still life to be had with a chronic illness...still purpose.

Michael: I have to admit that I still subscribe to this notion from time to time. I mean, how are you ever going to get any better if you don't find the right person who can help. Watching Erin being treated like a guinea pig however, does not seem like the answer either. The frustration of conflicting answers from practice to practice, and being talked down to and treated as if it's all in our heads is enough to make one want to give up at times. We have become much more calculated in our attempts, not just grasping at straws, but we spend more time researching doctors and talking to their patients before making decisions. I have learned to keep Erin's mental well being in mind first and the physical as she can tolerate.

2. You look good today....you must be feeling much better (cured).

Erin: Already feeling like a social pariah at times, when I feel well enough to actually get out of the house to participate in any given activity...of course I am going to put forth my best foot. Don't we all? I'm not going to go around with a frown on my face...I'm a naturally upbeat, friendly individual. This is one of the most hurtful comments that I receive, honestly. But, that is just me. Michael and I have talked about how it is just a misunderstanding of how people get sick and get better...most don't understand the nature of chronic illness. But, expect that I will ALWAYS put my best foot forward when out....that doesn't mean my illness has gone away. If chronic illness disappeared due to willpower...I would be back to my normal, pre-chronic illness self LONG AGO!!! Wouldn't that be a blessing?

Michael: This one's difficult. Even I am fooled by Erin from time to time on this issue. Sometimes I think that I can will Erin to feel better so that we can go out for a nice evening, then when she looks like a million bucks, I must have succeeded. But, like Erin stated, we all want to be seen in the best light and what's the saying...if you look good you feel good? While this may be true to some extent, it rarely holds true with an illness, chronic or not. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that sufferers of chronic illnesses know how to put on a happy face in the midst of suffering.

3. Given enough time,rest, and exercise, you will regain your health.

Erin: This is a difficult concept to explain to others. While rest sometimes helps, it does not "cure". It is a foreign concept to most. And instead of elaborating, I am going to share a scripture from Isaiah. Many times, scripture and prayer are what get me through the difficult days:

"Do not fear for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

Michael: Those of us without chronic illness have a reality that when someone gets the flu, or a stomach virus, they are out for a couple of days and then they get better. Our immune systems do their job and life continues on its merry way. We are so used to that particular concept than when someone does not get better over time it just seems strange. We get comments all of the time like "Oh, I've not seen you in a while, are you doing a lot better now?" No matter how many times we explain that this is a life long journey, the concept of people getting better with time and rest still supersedes what they've been told about a chronic illness sufferer. It's hard to understand something if you haven't experienced it, and it seems they too want to will Erin to feel better. I guess it's a part of our DNA to do so, but please remember there are some things which a person does not "get better" from.

4. I have a friend/relative/co-worker/etc. that tried this, and they no longer feel bad. You should try it, it will help you.

Erin: I have had this comment made to me over the years many times. Different treatment modalities do work for different people and does help with some of their symptoms. In fact, I have some treatment modalities that help me as well...but that doesn't mean that I don't still feel the pain, extreme fatigue breakthrough migraines, etc. In addition, just as people are often misinformed about the types of illnesses that I have (often because it isn't fun "table talk")...the individual that they knew may have actually had different illnesses and they didn't know about. Sometimes, and this has actually happened to me by trying some of these suggestions, things end up worse than better. I had to learn to take the reigns of my healthcare in my hands, and I have learned to be more selective with my treatment modalities. I honestly leave the doctoring to the doctors; however, I always appreciate prayers and concern for me and my health.

Michael: Early on we were eager to try anything, desperate for a cure and not knowing that the illness would never go away. Years later, it seems that many of our friends and relatives are still hopeful that they will be the ones to find something that will help. Unfortunately, we have learned that many of these things are money making schemes that we don't care to partake in. Again, we have become diligent in doing our research. The other thing is that every person's body reacts to treatments differently, some may or may not work for us. After a little research, we may try it, we may not, but it doesn't mean we have discounted your idea.

5. I know someone who "used to" have that, and now they are "just fine".

Erin: So, I've heard this several times before as well. This is hurtful, even though it is often used to "relate" and encourage. IT DOES NOT! I have been informed by my medical doctors that there is no known cure. I'm happy that whoever this individual is feels well. However, there are often misdiagnoses as well as levels of chronic illness. In addition, they could be "putting on their smiley/happy face" around people as well....something to consider.

Michael: I'm sorry, when I hear someone say this I automatically think that they must not have really had that disease, or that they had symptoms that imitated it, and they must have been misdiagnosed. I know that this is the way that most people try to connect or empathize, by sharing a story of hope that I can relate to, but it seems so contrary to what doctor after doctor has told us about the illness itself.

6. I saw you yesterday and you were out and looked fine (having a nice time)....and, today you are not well?

Erin: We are taught to not judge...however, this is one of the areas that I have felt the most judged in (by friends, relatives, church members, etc.). As a sufferer of chronic illness, I conserve energy and often look forward to events, a "day out" with a Michael, a friend, etc. However, for some reason, there is a misconception that I MUST ALWAYS stay home and never try to have a life. When I do actually enjoy myself with some type of activity...I often have to recover. This is what people do not see. However, like I said...my problem in general is: I am still a human being that craves a normal life (will never happen)...but, it is VERY HURTFUL to me and I'm sure those of us who suffer from chronic illness when we also have to suffer from the judgments of others because we actually try to enjoy the life we have been handed. No one knows the days it takes just to enjoy and partake in that day that I was out "looking like I was having a good time".

Michael: One of the hardest things for me to watch is for Erin to suffer for several days after spending a nice day out. It's simply amazing how much energy is spent putting on a good face and acting like there is no pain (among other symptoms). Even sitting at a table and playing games is enough to make her sore for a week. I'm super glad that she gets to enjoy these days, but I hate watching the subsequent days that follow. Very few people ever gets to see these days, they see the good days when she gets to have fun. Many times I just don't have the heart to tell people that she had to suffer for a week in order to spend some quality time with them. I usually tell about how much fun she actually had instead. I know this further extends the illusion that she is well, but it's what keeps people from distancing themselves from us. It's difficult to find the right balance at times.

7. We made plans to get together...what do you mean we have to reschedule?

Erin: Michael and I have had several couple friends, my personal friends themselves, and even relatives that simply don't understand that I have "bad days" and that I can't push through and can't "make myself" do things. I've missed some very important things...weddings, funerals, showers, etc. I don't do this on purpose... Sometimes my body dictates cancellation of plans. I WANT to participate. Unfortunately, this has whittled away some of mine/our friends and limited interaction with some of our relatives. This has shown us our friends and relatives that wish to endure the "unpredictable plan" couple. This bothers me on multiple accounts: a. it affects my husband, due to me; and b. prior to my sickness, I was Ms. Dependability...so, imagine how this makes me feel now. Chronic illness is the ultimate source of humility.

Michael: People are usually pretty forgiving if you have to change plans on them the first couple of times, but when they believe you probably aren't going to come again the next time, they begin to take things personally. I can't say that I blame them, I mean, there are plenty of other people who will "keep plans". It's still frustrating because we don't ever break plans on purpose. In all fairness, we do have friends that understand that all plans are tentative until we are literally on our way: thank you. Illness could care less if we have plans or not, and caring for my wife has to take priority over an evening out.

8. If you are with someone who can't take care of you and can't meet all of your needs...why do you stay with them?

Erin: I am going to primarily leave this one to Michael as this has primarily been addressed to him. However, he and I made oaths to each other, before God. "In sickness and in health." I know, without a doubt, if the situation were in reverse...I would be standing there...doing everything I can to support him...because he and I are now one. However, this hurts to hear that it is even being encouraged...these individuals must not understand the true meaning of commitment. In addition, it is another set of judgments...just because I'm sick doesn't mean that Michael and I can't have a fulfilling relationship together.

Michael: It makes me sad to think that people don't understand what unconditional love actually is. I am constantly amazed at how selfish people really are most of the time. Not that I am immune, but I really get to see people's true character by what comments and suggestions they make to me; mostly because these suggestions are what they have reasoned and would choose to do. If God's love for me was conditional, I would have been lost a long time ago. He commands husbands to love their wives, using the same unconditional, never ending love that He has. If I truly love Erin (and I do) this would never be a consideration, which is exactly why this comment seems to be so offensive to me.

"Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth." 1 Corinthians 13: 4-6

9. You are too young to be this sick.

Erin: I ABSOLUTELY agree. Sickness is not a respecter of age, status, race, etc. And, like I have said, it is the ultimate source of humility. And, my sickness has been the "ultimate teacher". It has drawn me closer to my Heavenly Father. In addition, while not always easy...I believe it has required stronger communication skills from Michael and myself. Sometimes, I count my illness a blessing in all of the lessons it has taught me at such a young age.

Michael: I have had the unfortunate experience of losing loved ones at an early age. It is quite unfortunate, but no one is too young to die and no one is too young to be ill. Young children are diagnosed with Leukemia every day. It makes me sad and it seems so unfair, but if we didn't have any trials or struggles to go through in this life, we would never be pointed toward God. These things keep us longing for a better home with Him and serve as a reminder as to who is really in charge. I have become thankful for Erin's illness for this very reason. It has truly helped me to become less and less selfish, to depend more and more on Him, and to focus my love on Erin as the woman I love, not as someone I expect to take care of me. God's love is pure and unselfish and I am learning and working to make mine this way as well.

10. I'm not just my illness. Feel free to ask me about the rest of my life.

Erin: Often times, due to not seeing me in a long time...the first (and sometimes only thing) that I get questioned about is my illness. However, I have more to me and my life than my illness. I live with it 24/7. If I could offer any takeaway over all of this...I am still the same smart, funny, creative Erin here...who happens to deal with a chronic illness each and every day. Has it affected my everyday life? ABSOLUTELY! However, I'm still the same me...with several invisible illnesses! And, I love it when I get to laugh and enjoy spending time with others who understand that. I still love the interaction of others when I feel good, and I certainly don't like to share my "good days" with my chronic illness. My illness gets to share enough of my time anyway, so sometimes I like to share about the other interests that I have...I was (and still am) a well-rounded person before my illness too.

Michael: It can be very difficult to speak to someone with a disability or an illness because it's hard to know what to say. Many times it's easier to avoid the situation than to find a common ground. I too am guilty of having done so in the past. Now, however, I make it a point to make eye contact with those who have an obvious disability and acknowledge them as a human. When I hear that someone has cancer or some other hidden, yet debilitating illness, I make a point of lending them my ear. I do so because many times I too am equated with Erin's illness. Once I tell people for the 3rd, 5th, 10th time that she is still not feeling well, or that we were unable to do anything "notable" over the weekend, they don't know what else to say and we part ways. It has made many relationships quite awkward and has completely ruined others. Eventually people avoid talking to me altogether because of it. There are other aspects to my life as well, and I need friends to help me through just as Erin does. It's hard to fight through the awkwardness at first, but imagine what an impact you can make in people's lives if you do.

In conclusion, we both wish to say...most people do and say things with only the best of intentions, and without malice in mind. If we (and others) weren't able to speak up, advocate, and inform our well meaning peers how hurtful these comments and actions truly are, who would? As long as it is always done in love, as God has called us to love one another...we feel it only helps to educate and hopefully spare some hurt feelings for others. However, we will continue to:

"Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer." Romans 12:12

1st Annual Harvest Tour of Homes (2012)....My Current Fall Decor

Hello current loyal Chronic Christian Crafter subscribers and readers (I've got lots of catching up with you, but in another post) and hello new readers that are here to see my 1st Annual Harvest Tour of Homes participation, in which it is my pleasure to participate in the 1st Annual Harvest Tour of Homes with Stringtown Homes. Several blogs are sharing their fall decor via Heather's blog at Stringtown Homes, and the list of all of the blogs are located here. I'm sure that you would be blessed, as I have visited several...lots of beautiful decor and inspiration! Plus, I'm sure they would love your love and comments! I'm constantly amazed at everyone's abilities and creativity!

This post is going to have very little dialogue (okay, who am I kidding, but it is going to be photo heavy), as it is not a tutorial blog (I may have a tutorial on some of these items later next month). I will have captions and explanations as needed. I've not COMPLETELY finished my fall decorating, I'm still happy to share where I am. Here is the beginning and majority of my "Harvest Tour of my Home"...I hope you enjoy!

Goodwill for pennies on the dollar. The fall "greenery" was also
picked up all along for nickels, dimes and quarters at yard sales...
what can I say? "I'm a thrifty decor kind of gal!"

While we haven't had the chance to do a lot of our outdoor fall decorating
just yet...the door "envelope wreath" and this little bucket (both yard sale/Goodwill goodies)
were "pumpkinized" and "fallized" (I think I made those words up :)
upon entry into our house.

CAN'T FORGET OUR M & M PUMPKIN'S...HUGE HIT WITH THE LITTLE ONES!!!

We typically keep our M & M pumpkins right as one enters our home....
EXCEPT on Halloween night...then, they meet our little friends on the
porch. Most of our little friends enjoy our "little" M & M friends...they
tend to be kind and very generous with the candy!!!

Instead of candles on the candlesticks, I've added little pumpkins with
floral decor (purchased at Dollar Tree last year). Two pumpkins in the middle were
also Dollar Tree bright orange pumpkins (close up below with more info). Wreath is a
grapevine wreath with mini pumpkins and gourds (in different colors) and some floral
sprays. Also, block set that I made and changes with the seasons (currently reading "fall").

These shutters were purchased at a yard sale this summer for quarters...I
felt like I hit the jackpot!!! They were seafoam green, but I painted and roughed
them up a bit (can't tell much in picture)...Now, they can be backdrops...or, how I used them here...they
can be/are a combo backdrop/faux fire screen for the burlap pumpkin and fall flower arrangements.
Burlap buckets came plain, and I stenciled the numbers on, added the pumpkins (by hot gluing onto floral
styrofoam and adding fall floral as well to give interest.

Then, I cut out vinyl to read...."Give Thanks" and applied to pumpkins.

I enjoy decorating with pumpkins for fall....can you tell? Let's look at these

Would you believe it when I said that this is one of my favorite crafts that I've
done this year? It is!!! Last year at a yard sale, I purchased several trays, and at the
time, I planned to paint, fix up, etc., etc. Well, I started going through the box again
earlier this month...got this tray out and even got my paint and materials together.
Then, I started looking and realized...this looks like "fall"...don't get me wrong..."retro fall", but
it grew on me quickly. On top of that, it is a lap tray...SOOOO...I don't have to worry
AT ALL about having to get it to stand up on a stand...IT HAS A BUILT IN STAND..
Can it get anymore awesome? Now I wish I had more...I only have 1 more...believe me
when I say it will be used! Well, I chose not to paint it and leave it the vintage patchwork
because that can't be replaced, and then I placed some Fall Subway Art on there....truly...
one of my FAVORITE PROJECTS so far!!!

My Deco Mesh Fall Wreath (Tutorial appearing on blog later...as well as for
custom orders in shop for fall and Christmas-see "Shop" tab along top of blog post). In addition,
one of my other favorite and quick fall crafts...my "Be Still and Know that I am God"
plate in fall vinyl colors that I purchased.

When Unexpected Trials Produce Strength...Repost from Guest Post with "Finding Purpose with the Pain"

I am now guest posting as well as a monthly contributor on the blog Finding Purpose in the Pain, which I spoke about in this post here. When Unexpected Trials Produce Strength....

What did you want to be when you grew up? A teacher, a police man, a doctor? As children (and even adults)...we typically have hopes, dreams and aspirations to grow up and be a "productive" member of society. We have expectations of getting married, starting a family, which may include a dog or other animal, and purchasing a home with the white picket fence. Well, we may not EXACTLY want a home with a white picket fence or a dog even...but, point is we have goals, aspirations, and certain expectations of how life should proceed...."as we grow up".

In addition, within reasonable expectation, most of us expect to lead a fairly healthy life. Isn't this the typical "American dream"? While we might have a cold here or there, "real" sickness is for "other" people.

What happens if some or ALL of your expectations don't come true? Or, if put another way...life can and often will throw us curve balls. What happens when unexpected trials come up in life? What happens then, when our dreams and expectations are crushed and MUST BE changed due to unexpected trials?

First, let me tell you a little story about me and my "American dream"; and then we'll discuss more about "unexpected trials" how they produce strength. Here is a little story about me:

I was considered "healthy" when my husband and I started dating, even though I had chronic migraines (that I had suffered and functioned from since I was a teenager). I had a successful career in social work, and when my husband (then boyfriend) proposed...we began developing so many dreams and aspirations for our life together. We were excited to embark on our new life together, as most newlyweds are.

We were married shortly after we were engaged; however, I began experiencing what is best described as "severe flu like" symptoms approximately 3 weeks after we returned from our honeymoon. For approximately the first 6 months of my married life, I was in and out of doctor's offices with bi-weekly to weekly doctor appointments, labwork, tests, etc., being poked and prodded. However, to be honest, I barely remember that time period in my life because I was so sick!!! I was eventually diagnosed with my chronic illnesses: fibromyalgia and CFS, in addition to other illnesses that tend to accompany like IBS, and of course my migraines. My road travelled since then has added some additional medical issues...but, my post is not meant to focus on the medical issues....it is meant to focus on something else.....

My focus is on the part "3 weeks after we returned from our honeymoon". I have been sick almost the entire length of our marriage!!! Talk about having to readjust your expectations of what we thought our marriage was going to look like!!! While marriage is a blessing, and I am blessed with my partner...we only know marriage basically with me and my chronic illness. (Clearly not what we were expecting when we said "I do" and "in sickness and in health" a mere 3 weeks prior). We only know how to schedule activities around "good days" as well as having to learn to adjust plans on a moments notice if for some reason I begin to start having some medical issue come up. We had to shift a complete 180 degrees in our expectations for our future. However:

Of course if I (as well as my husband) had a choice...I would not choose this path in life over a healthy one (no one would, really). Rather, I would choose one that seems to be filled with less cares, worries, and of course less pain. However, our journey "molds" us into the people we are...God does not give us more than we can handle...and I believe I was given the exact partner to walk hand in hand with as we experience this life and learn more of our Saviors love for us. Our "expectations" were shattered...and we had to rebuild new/real "expectations"....with lots of prayer, lots of love, and lots of support to and for each other.

No one is immune to unexpected trials. I share my story today to let you know that even though my illness was completly "unexpected" and has created many "trials"....relying on God and His promises through trials produces strength.. In addition, new expectations can be put in place...and, in the midst of all of it all...I can rest assured knowing that God is and will always be there to provide the strength that is needed to get me through. The following verses have been wonderful sources of encouragement and strength for reflection:

"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him." James 1:12

"I can do all things through him who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13 (one of my all time favorite verses in the Bible)

"So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal." 2 Corinthians 4: 16-18

There is a saying by Dolly Parton that I love..."If you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain." I love this saying because while sitting in the middle of a rain storm; it seems sad, ugly, sticky and depressing. However, afterwards...when the rainbow appears...it makes sitting through the rain worth it. The rainbow (God's promise to us) makes sitting through the rain worth it...sometimes trials in life are just that. While going through the trial...it feels like a GREAT BIG rain storm! However, once you make it to the other side and you see the "rainbow" and the "lessons learned", blessings, etc.; you understand the "rain storm/trial" that you encountered. I believe I wouldn't be as close to the Lord or my husband had it not been the rain/rain storms (unexpected trials).

Finally, I will say that I've learned many lessons due to my health "trials". I have even addressed this on my blog, Chronic Christian Crafter, in separate posts, such as my what is my purpose?, life lessons and perspective and several other encouragement posts here on my blog that address things that I've learned from my various unexpected trials. In addition, my illness has opened up a whole new area of outreach, friendship and ministry...because I no longer sympathize...I empathize (part of my blog's development and purpose is due to my illness/"unexpected trial"). And, no one is immune from "trials"...we will each face trials, big or small (and they may not just health related, which I addressed here, they come in all forms...financial, spiritual, emotional, etc). However, if nothing more is taken away than this:

While it is wonderful to have close family, friends, etc., to rely on for strength...ultimately...

WHEN WE ARE PRESENTED WITH UNEXPECTED TRIALS, GOD PROMISES STRENGTH. RELY ON GOD'S PROMISES!

Cedar Chest Transformation with Chalk Paint and Upholstery...Repost

Last week I had the honor to guest post with my new friend, Barbara, at Chase the Star. She has an amazing blog, that I just love, and I was honored to guest post with her. Just in case you didn't catch my post on my transformation of my heirloom cedar chest from homemade chalk paint...I'm sharing it with you here with you all today. In addition...if you haven't checked out Chase the Star, I suggest a visit! She has an amazing site! So, without further ado...

Have you jumped on the homemade chalk paint train yet? Well, I am going to admit, this is my VERY FIRST project that I've used the homemade chalk paint on...and, I LOVED IT! I've had this project on my very long "to do" list for a while now. Here is a peek of the final look:

This cedar chest was my great, great, great grandmothers (yes, you read that right). And, it was made for her by my great, great, great grandfather (her husband). It has eventually made its way down to me, and we have it up in our bonus room. We use it as a coffee table (that serves double duty and stores blankets). Due to the history in this furniture, it is one of those "sentimental" pieces that I can't get rid of; however, it needed a "face lift" to match other furniture in the room. So, I determined I wanted to try the antique finish that chalk paint provides.

Premade chalk paint can be purchased; however, the price tag...not in my budget. So, I took to Pinterest and the internet to find a homemade chalk paint recipe and I settled on this recipe:

1 1/2 cups of paint
1/2 cup Plaster of Paris
1/2 cup of water

I actually doubled this recipe due to the amount of paint I had to work with, which was fine as long as the recipe remains in the correct proportions. I didn't need all of the chalk paint that I made because a little goes a long way; however, I have already used some for another project and stored the remainder.

Materials Used for this furniture transformation:

Paint color of choice (I used the rest of a paint from a former project)
Plaster of Paris (for this homemade chalk paint recipe...some recipes call for different materials)
Dropcloth
Sandpaper
Wax (I used Minwax Paste Finishing Wax)
Cheesecloth (Or...clean cloths to apply wax and to buff the wax off)
Paintbrush
Container (to hold homemade chalk paint mixture)
Paint stirrer
Foam
Adhesive spray
Fabric of choice
Heavy duty stapler and staples

Following along from the collage picture above, here are the steps:

Since prep (like sanding or priming) isn't needed, I began painting my first thin layer of paint after mixing paint with the ingredients (i.e. Plaster of Paris, water) as noted above. The paint dries fast...as soon as I got finished with one coat, it was ready for the next. I ended up painting 3 coats on my cedar chest. While it might not have required this many coats, I was pleased with 3...it is all personal preference and the look that you're trying to achieve.
After I applied all of the coats and they were completely dry, then comes the fun part...sanding!! This is actually quite laborsome, and I purposely chose to not heavily distress this piece...however, you can see in some of the close up picture(s) how the paint distresses with sanding. (This is my primary and favorite quality of this paint).
Once I was happy with the distressing...I took a break! (I also had a very sweet helper, my husband, help with most of the sanding...) Next is waxing and buffing in order to protect the hard work. I used Minwax Finishing Wax. I simply applied with a clean cloth and allowed about 15 minutes for it to dry. Once the wax was dry to touch, I took a piece of cheese cloth, and I buffed the wax off. This will make the distressed areas pop (especially where wood is "peeking" through) even better, as well as adding protection to the painted project.
Next, I added upholstery and padding to the top of my chest. I purchased several 1" thick foam squares from Hobby Lobby. I measured and arranged them to ensure the correct fit on top of the lid to the cedar chest first. Some had to be cut/trimmed to fit the lid. Once all of the foam was arranged to fit the lid of the chest. After all of the foam was cut and arranged to fit correctly on the lid of the cedar chest, I sprayed adhesive on the chest and the back of the foam one by one (working fast as this stuff works and sets up fast). (This took mere minutes...)
The final step is to upholster the top of the cedar chest with fabric. In order to make the upholstery of the fabric easier...I unscrewed the lid from the chest base and worked on the upholstery separately from the base of the cedar chest. I used my heavy duty stapler and stapled the fabric to the bottom of the chest lid (pulling the fabric tight on each side, beginning in the middle of each side, and working out). I treated the corners as one would a Christmas present. Once finished, I attached the lid back to the base of the chest...

Above is a look back at the before and after. Isn't it quite the difference? To accessorize, I just added the dollar store tray (that I updated as well), with a few accessories on it, and that is all that I plan to add. You can check out the tutorial on how I updated the tray here.

So, now that we are about to wrap up the summer...were you able to accomplish any big "to do" items off of your list. Do you have any big projects on your "to do" list that you plan to tackle soon? Ch..Ch..Changes

Good Saturday morning lovely followers, or those that might be just popping in...

Those of you who follow my blog might be saying is this Erin's site, Chronic Christian Crafter? I assure you all...it is! Let me explain: For some reason, while blogger has my html code for my previous blog, shows me in previews that my previous blog was still in tact, etc...it was not apparently holding the code and therefore not displaying the blog like it was suppose to be displayed (how it had been displayed for several months). I tinkered and tinkered, and finally gave in and decided to see if there might be another layout I might be happy with.

I found this layout that you see on the blog today...and, now I am in the process of tinkering, and tinkering...well, you get the point. I found that I like the background and layout? What do you think? But, I'm still having to work out the technicalities of the fonts, changing some of the coloring from the previous layout, etc. So, please bare with me! I've already done a lot of the big stuff like my header and sidebar labels so that it wasn't "TOO OFF"....

Anyway...it is STILL ME under this new skin!!! Hope you like the new changes! I will miss the old...just can't get blogger to get the html code to stick :(

Hope everyone has a blessed and relaxing Labor Day weekend! Special plans? Me...I get to celebrate some special birthdays with my family...can't beat that!! Then a little landscaping "supervision" on Monday, if weather permits...maybe some pix later in the week...as a teaser...here is a picture of one of my projects I just completed to go in the new landscaped area:

Cherry Cream Cheese Pie

When I first began this blog, I intended to share some of my favorite recipes, or some of the recipes that I try out that I believe are worth a "share"...well, I've gotten sidetracked and I've only shared one! Here's my attempt to increase the recipe quota here at Chronic Christian Crafter...

My extended family enjoys getting together for special occasions like birthdays and holidays. My primary requested food item to bring: my Cherry Cream Cheese Pie. Of course, I make it for other occasions as well. This pie is yummy!

Ingredients:

1 (6 oz.) Graham Cracker Ready Crust Pie Crust
1 (8 oz.) pkg. softened cream cheese
1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup lemon juice, fresh or bottled (not lemon extract)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 (21 oz.) can cherry pie filling

Directions:

Let cream cheese stand @ room temperature until softened (or soften in microwave).
In medium bowl, beat cream cheese until light and fluffy.
Slowly add sweetened condensed milk, beating until smooth. Stir in lemon juice and vanilla until well mixed. (as seen in picture above)
Pour into crust.
Chill for at least 3 hours or until firm.
Top with cherry pie filling.

Makes 1 pie. (One DELICIOUS pie!!!)

This pie disappears! I never get to bring any home. If you try the recipe, I would love to hear what you think about it. Hope you enjoy!

Dollar Store Tray Update

I LOVE the Dollar General Store! One, I can go in...get what I need, and get out. Two...the Dollar Store has items that I can buy to help with decorating that won't break the bank. This tray is one of those items:

Earlier this summer, I picked up this cute little tray while I was dropping in to pick up some essentials. Cute, huh? I thought so; however, when I purchased the tray (for mere dollars)...I knew that I would be modifying it to match the decor in the room it was going. The transformation was super easy!

I used some of my favorite materials to transform this little beauty:

Mod podge (I used glossy on this project)
Scrapbook sheet of paper of choice
Fiskar cutting tool (to cut a clean line)

This was seriously the easiest transformation. Here is the updated look:

This was one of the quickest, easiest craft transformations I've done in a while. Once I picked out the scrapbook paper that I wanted to use, I did have to cut and piece the scrapbook paper due to the shape of the tray (can you tell where it is pieced). I utilized my Fiskar cutting tool to ensure that I cut a straight line. Then, I used my glossy mod podge to adhere my two pieces of scrapbook paper onto the tray, ensuring that there were no bubbles left between the surfaces. After allowing the mod podge to dry, I painted a coat over the top to provide a protective layer. See...easy peasy!!!

So...next time you see that piece that needs a little "sprucing up" but has a good price...just think...it might not need that much to turn it into something that fits your decor. Now, I have purchased items before that took A LOT more time to bring it to my vision. I simply lucked upon this one. And...give the Dollar Store a try...they can have some hidden treasures!

Are you hurting today?

We each face difficulties in this life...no one is immune. Some face difficulties in the form of financial difficulties, or in the form of family issues, or medical issues...we can go on and on. Many of you reading this post are going through some sort of difficulty this very moment.

Then, of course, we can ebb and flow...at times we are coasting through life with very few difficulties or conflict, blessed in the fact that we are not in the middle of difficulties at the time. However, we each experience struggles, big or small, frequent or infrequent. How we deal with them makes a HUGE difference in how we experience life. When faced with difficulties, however big or small they might be...I propose we smile...

Smile you might say? Yes...SMILE! A good attitude and relying on our Savior and his promises in the face of difficulties will help with the perseverance needed for our life here on earth. I love this quote from Joyce Meyers:

"Battles are fought in our minds every day. When we begin to feel the battle is just too difficult and want to give up, we must choose to resist negative thoughts and be determined to rise above our problems. We must decide that we're not going to quit. When we're bombarded with doubts and fears, we must take a stand and say: ' I'll never give up! God's on my side. He loves me, and He's helping me! I'm going to make it!"

Those of you who have been regular readers of this blog know that I have a chronic medical condition. Many of you that follow also have chronic medical conditions, as you have shared in private messages. I've had comments on my positive attitude/outlook in the midst of chronic pain. My answer? I have the hope of eternal life, and I believe in His promises. Do I have really bad days...yes...but, I try to keep my attitude positive (yes, and I sometimes falter). However, I must focus on His promises and persevere toward my ultimate goal of an eternal life in heaven. I'm promised a life of no pain and no tears...and, you are too! So, I can persevere...through difficulties. And, I try to remember to smile...honestly, it makes the world of difference in interactions with others.

Do I think it would make a difference if I chose to complain/whine/not smile and have a bad attitude whenever I felt bad....ABSOLUTELY, in a negative way!!! Have you ever been say, at the grocery store, and your cashier wouldn't smile or interact with you at all...regardless of what you tried to do to be nice and cheer them up? I have...it is depressing. If I acted like this cashier every. single. day that I felt bad or had difficulties, NO ONE would want to be around me. So, a genuine smile and good attitude is desirable. Even if people don't know you, a smile is often returned with a smile...and, if I'm having a bad day...I'd rather be greeted with smiles than with frowns....wouldn't you?

Faith & Fibromyalgia nominated me for this award...and, she has an amazing blog about Christian living with Fibromyalgia. I truly love her blog as she is very informative as well as full of compassion regarding chronic illness and its impact on one's life. 7 Things About Me:

1. I've never met or heard of anyone with the same middle name as mine. I'm unique :)

2. I've received 2 different college degrees, and almost completed one more degree(pulled out before finished because I realized I didn't want to complete...3 classes short). I have a BSW in social work, paralegal certificate, and like I said 3 classes short of Masters of Education in Curriculum and Education.

3. I used to be deadly terrified of needles (literally passed out after receiving shot once at doctor's office). I had to get over this phobia FAST as I have gotten poked and prodded on so much in the past five and a half years. I even learned how to give myself shot at one point (not that I liked it).

4. I love to read.

5. As a piggy back on #4....In addition to the Bible, my favorite authors are: Danielle Steel, Nicholas Sparks, Beth Moore, and inspirational and devotional books.

6. I LOVE mashed potatoes and mac n' cheese...I go on streaks (especially when I'm having really bad "flare ups") that I could eat them all the time. However, I am ~~forced~~ encouraged to eat protein with them as well.

7. I purchased and lived in my own home for 4 years prior to getting married to my husband. When we got engaged...I had to sell it, and I sold it WITHOUT A REALTOR while we were on a vacation in New Mexico! I doubt that would happen in this real estate climate...but, it was "kind of" awesome! Oh yeah...and, it was an "all cash" offer with no contingencies.

Twine Personalized Canvas

I hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend and you're ready to begin this upcoming week refreshed. I've been dealing with some computer issues on my end (one completely crashed, and the new one we purchased had to be returned). However, I'm happy to say that I believe my computer issues are over as we received our new computer Saturday, and I believe everything is finally installed and ready to go! So, I'm excited...how about you?

Since I'm just able to get caught up, I'm going to share another quick tutorial of one of my projects in my mini bathroom remodel that I spoke about here and here. Like I stated in previous posts, I am going to have a before and after post of our mini bathroom remodel following the project tutorials that I did to transform our bathroom (which there are several). And, I will go ahead and state that we previously had chinese sayings/orchids/etc. as decor (which we had grown tired of), and we have now transformed to a more personalized and natural use of materials theme. Here is how I personalized with our twine "L":

Materials for this project:

Wooden "L" from craft store (I purchased mine on sale from Hobby Lobby)
Twine
Scrapbook Paper of choice
Mod Podge
Canvas (12" x 12")
Hot glue and hot glue gun
E6000 glue

This really was so easy. Some time went into the wrapping of the letter. Here is the pretty self explanatory tutorial:

Apply small amounts of hot glue at a time to wooden letter and apply twine to your letter. Once the letter is completely "twined", put aside.
Take your 12" x 12" canvas and your scrapbook paper you have chosen. "Paint" mod podge onto the canvas as well as the back of the scrapbook paper (of course, make sure the scrapbook paper is 12" x 12"). Once this is dry, not before...mod podge over the front of the scrapbook paper and edges. Let this dry.
Once canvas and scrapbook paper are completely dry, apply E6000 glue to the back of your letter, and place on canvas. I will state here that the E6000 glue is MUCH BETTER than hot glue, which I tried at first, and my letter fell off...just a tip, so that you don't have to learn the hard way like I did.
I finished mine off with some rows of twine hot glued around the edges...however, you could embellish anyway you wish!

Another glimpse at one of our projects to personalize and transform our master bath into a more personalized space...what will the next project be? You'll have to stay tuned...

Sunshine Award...And my blog nominations...

I was recently awarded this Sunshine Award from my friend at Faith & Fibromyalgia. She has such a lovely blog and is so gifted in bringing awareness to this chronic illness that we share, fibromyalgia. I appreciate the lovely things that she shared about me when nominating me for this award. She is just an amazing young lady.

This award is given to "bloggers who positively and creatively inspire others in the "blogosphere".

1. Who is your favorite philosopher?

I don't think that I have a favorite philosopher...sorry.

2. What is your favorite number?

My favorite number is 7.

3. What is your favorite animal?

My favorite animal is VERY SPECIFIC...it is the Yorkshire Terrier. My little Bailey is a Yorkshire Terrier, and he is the perfect companion. He is an amazing cuddler when I am sick, happy to see us when we come home...just like a part of the family! What can I say...he has us wrapped around his little paw!

4. What are your Facebook and Twitter urls?

Twitter: I do not "tweet"...I opened a twitter account at one time. However, the account was hacked fairly soon thereafter. I kept forgetting to "tweet", etc. So, I decided to stick with social media that I understood and enjoyed using.

5. What is your favorite time of the day?

Mornings are very difficult for me. Due to my chronic illness, I tend to always have increased stiffness and pain in the morning. Typically, later afternoon and early evening are better times, health wise for me. I tend to get more things accomplished during this time due to "any energy" I might have is normally felt during the afternoon/early evening.

6. What was your favorite vacation?

I just posted a very long post regarding vacations as well as posted several vacation pictures. Instead of repeating myself, I'll refer you here to the vacation post.

7. What is your favorite physical activity?

Due to my chronic illness, physical activity is fairly limited. Right now, walking, swimming and doctor ordered stretches are pretty much the only types of physical activity that I'm able to partake in. And, this depends on pain and fatigue levels.

8. What is your favorite non-alcoholic drink?

I don't have only one favorite per se...but, I do have a few top favorites: strawberry lemonade (yum); sweet tea (I'm a southern gal); and ginger ale (soothes those tummy aches). Of course, I like water as well.

9. What is your favorite flower?

I think that orchids are beautiful flowers. However, I love to see collections of flowers put together. I don't have a "specific" favorite flower...I just love the look and smell of fresh flowers. Finding a trend here...I don't tend to have "favorite" anythings...I am a lover of lots of stuff. God makes many things great!

10. What is your passion?

My passion is to encourage and inspire others to be the best they can be. I want to uplift others. When someone leaves my presence (both in person or online), I want them to feel better about themselves rather than worse. In addition, if I can bring a small spotlight on invisible illnesses in some small way (in a positive, informative way), I would love this. Of course, I am always happy to assist someone in their walk with and to the Lord (isn't that what our purpose on this earth is anyway?)

Getting To Know You Series....Vacations

It is that time of the week again when I link up with Stuff I Love so that we can, as bloggers "get to know one another" better. Or, if you're not a blogger and you're reading, you can get to know me better as well ;) I've enjoyed this series, because it lets others see me on a more personal level...tell me what you guys are thinking of this series of post so far. Plus, it provides a chance to make new friends...why, yes, of course I'll participate!!!

Getting To Know You: Vacations

1) What has been your favorite vacation?

This is a rather difficult question. Why? Because each vacation in and of itself has a special place in my heart. However, of ALL vacations that I've EVER taken, I guess I can narrow it down to 2 separate vacations: my honeymoon, which was spent in Jackson Hole, Wyoming (it was simply beautiful...we were married right after Christmas...so LOTS of snow...just gorgeous). And, then, I loved New Orleans as well. The architecture, culture and the landscape of New Orleans is unique to itself. It is an experience that I loved.

I can't decide between the two...both bring back a flood of memories as well...I wouldn't flutter an eyelid if given a choice to return to either one.

2) What was your most exotic vacation?

I haven't really gone on any "exotic" type vacations. The closest thing to "exotic" I guess would be going to the beach...wow! I've gone to a few beaches a handful of times; however, they have never been "exotic" in nature (i.e. Hawaii, Bahamas). I guess this is one of those "bucket list" type items!!

3) What was your worst vacation?

My worst vacation occurred last year...and, it had really ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the vacation itself. However, the vacation became the byproduct. My husband, my mom and stepdad, and I traveled to Edisto Beach, SC (neat place, by the way). This is about an 8 hour drive for us. We arrived and were there for 1 day. That night, in the middle of the night, we were awakened to learn that my uncle passed away suddenly. So, we left early in the morning (after we had repacked and checked out of the condo) and returned home to the most unexpected funeral. The ride back was excruciating because we were all numb.

Due to the suddenness of my uncle's death...this was obviously the worst vacation...I will always associate this vacation to it. Like I said, the memories of the vacation are simply a byproduct.

4) What is your craziest vacation story?

It seems that each and every vacation that my husband and I take results in a crazy vacation story at some point...take for instance our most recent vacation: Las Vegas. We thought we were going to exit without one. (I'm not kidding...there is one it seems during EVERY SINGLE VACATION...we've learned to kind of laugh at them and "roll with the punches...what else can you do?)

Anyway, we were on the plane to leave Las Vegas and return home with a layover in Denver, Colorado. In order to make this story short...we prepared to leave the terminal (and actually did pull out) 2 times. However, the Captain, after delaying for several minutes, would come over the speaker and tell us of "mechanical difficulties". The delays eventually resulted in about a 2.5 hour delay in take off...which made almost the whole entire plane miss connections. Since we happened to be on THE VERY LAST ROW (of course the only time that has ever happened)...we were the very last people to obtain vouchers to spend the night in Denver, Colorado for the night and new tickets for the following day. Let us just say we were suppose to get home and in our beds that night at 11:00pm (and that was with a 2 hour time difference). We didn't get to our hotel that night until midnight. All we had was the luggage we had as carryon, and my husband and I had packed ALL of toiletries in our checked luggage. Thankfully, the hotel provided a few items. It was fun...and quite the adventure! You just have to "roll with the punches".

5) What is your dream vacation?

I would love to take a tour (3 week to a month) of Europe. I am in love with all of the architecture of Europe. I think it is gorgeous. Maybe one day...another item on the bucket list.

6) If you could vacation with any 3 celebrities, who would you take?

I have absolutely no idea...I'm sorry but I can't think of any that I would die to take. Honestly, I am not sure that I would want to vacation with even one celebrity. It seems that most think they are "better" than others, and they would attract a lot of attention...no thanks! :) I'll stick with my current traveling companion.

7) Who is/are your favorite people to vacation with?

This is easy...I always want to vacation with my husband. We enjoy our vacations together. He would agree that I do a lot of the research and planning ahead of time so that when we get to our destinations, I have a lot of information so that we can be "somewhat knowledgeable" about a place (that we've never been) and so that we can have an enjoyable, complete experience of that particular destination. While I also enjoy vacationing with my family sometimes, I always like vacationing with him.

8) What is the best gift that someone has brought you back from a vacation?

While I guess you could say "technically" I was with him...the best gift that was brought back from one of our vacations was an engagement ring. To clarify: my husband and I visited Albuquerque and Carlsbad, New Mexico. While there, he proposed to me...so, I went to New Mexico without a ring...I returned with a ring. So, obviously this was the best gift someone has brought back.

While the ring in and of itself was wonderful. It wasn't just the ring that I was ecstatic to be bringing back...it was that I was getting to marry my best friend. And, he continues to be today! There is no better gift than that!

a site to be seen...absolutely breathtaking. This can not be put into words.

9) What kinds of vacations did you take as a kid?

During summer vacations, I ALWAYS spent at least 2 weeks with my mom's parents on their farm...I LOVED going down to the farm. It was a source of love and comfort. It was only about 30 minutes away, so we also went down there on regular occasion. However, I was able to spend the night during the summertime!

While I did not go on many vacations as a child, most were family oriented (i.e. Walt Disney World, Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, etc.). My parents separation and eventual divorce hindered vacations due to financial strains. We did go to Niagra Falls with my mother once, which was an amazing trip. I did go on a vacation or two with friends that invited me, in addition I went on several retreats with my youth group from church. I never felt like I was deprived in any way.

Jewelry Organizer from Free Yard Sale Find

"One man's trash...another man's treasure." Isn't that how the saying goes?

While I don't enjoy the heat and humidity of the summertime, I do enjoy one thing... yard sales! I really enjoy looking for treasures from someone else's "trash". One weekend this summer, I really scored BIG...I mean, I had a car load by the end of my day. One of my scores...a free cork board. Let me tell you...it was not a looker (however, I had big plans in mind).

While I have a small jewelry box to house my jewelry, my necklaces just didn't have adequate space. Plus, they weren't displayed well. I had scoured Pinterest for ideas to remedy this problem. Then, while I was yard sale shopping and I saw this bulletin board (for free mind you), I knew I could turn it into a jewelry organizer for my necklaces and bracelets:

I am conscientious of budget; so, I try to be thrifty as much as possible. This project was no different. I used a limited amount of materials on this project (most of which I had on hand), so here's my material list:

I used some black and white tweed material that I purchased at an estate sale for $2 for several yards (used to cover the corkboard).

I used a black and white skirt that I picked up from a yard sale last year (for free) for the outer edge to make ruffles.

I used A LOT of hot glue and my glue gun to adhere all of the fabric to the cork board for this project

I trimmed out the seams with some braided trim (the most costly part of the project...more expensive than all of the other materials combined). (Not pictured)

This project was really fairly simple and is pretty self explanatory...and, now I have my necklaces and bracelets organized and in clear view to see instead of hiding in a drawer that I have to shuffle through. I LOVE IT. The directions are as follows:

Ensure the cork board is prepped and ready. Take your first fabric and cut a little larger than your cork board surface area. Hot glue along the inside edges of the frame and press the fabric down...do little areas at a time to make it more manageable. Allow the fabric to cool and set once completed (which it will fairly quickly).

Once the fabric covering the corkboard is adhered and trimmed, apply fabric around the frame. (I deconstructed the skirt, and hot glued it by giving the fabric a little bit of ruffles with how I glued). It is important to ensure that the wood in the frame is completely covered by the ruffle. (I also ran my black and white tweed up some onto the frame, just to ensure that there wouldn't be a gap where either cork or the frame could possibly be seen).

After the fabric covering the cork board has been hot glued onto the surface and the fabric has been glued around the frame, pick out a great trim to hot glue in between the two fabrics as a finishing touch. Hot glue it around each edge of the cork board, covering the rough edges and leaving a finished and polished look.

I simply purchased a pack of clear push pins to hang the jewelry on because I didn't want to compete with the jewelry itself with colorful push pins or tacks. This was such a simple transformation, and if you go back to the before picture of the "free cork board"...this was just the right transformation for what I needed. Now, I don't have to spend several minutes searching through my drawer where I had my necklaces and bracelets before! Cute, functional, and inexpensive...right up my alley!

Getting To Know You Series...Transportation

Do you remember last week when I joined in with a series that encourages bloggers to connect and learn more about each other (last week's topic was about siblings). Well, it's already time to "get to know me better" again....I love this concept! It lets people see me on a more personal level. Plus, a chance to make new friends...yes, please!!!

Getting To Know You Series: Transportation

1) What is your favorite mode of transportation? Since I utilize my car primarily for any type of transport...I would state it is my "favorite".

2) What was your first vehicle? My first vehicle was a 1984 Chevrolet Cavalier...I paid for it out of my own money. And, it served me well, too. I drove it through high school, college, and most of graduate school.

3) What is your primary means of transportation now? Like I said before, I definitely rely on my car for transportation. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have a car to jump right into to take me to places/errands that I need to go. I drive a Honda Accord. I love that it is so dependable. I don't worry about it due to its safety and dependability.

4) What is your craziest vehicle story? Other than narrowly going over a cliff on the interestate due to being involved in a bad wreck...probably a crazy/funny vehicle story would center on my first car, the Chevrolet Cavalier that I drove my college years. I lived a little over 3 hours away from the college I attended. I was assisting with orientation at the beginning of school one year, so they wanted those of us that were going to be helping up to school even earlier. Well, I had a specific exit that was/still is about half way between the college I attended and my home that I would use as a "stretching, rest stop, snacks, etc.". So, I stopped as usual (my car was packed because it was the beginning of the school year) and as I was getting off of the road...something hit just the right spot so that while I was in the gas station/restaurant combo...ALL of my oil leaked out. I was about to start my car...but, thankfully a guy ran and stopped me from doing it. Long story short, I just happened to have a relative close to that exit that hauled my car to his house and he was a mechanic and fixed it....how did I get to school? There also just "happened" to be representatives from my college making presentations in that city that day...so they picked me up when they were finished.

It was terrible to break down...but, it was like divine intervention that I broke down at "just the right place" for help and "just the right time". Any other day, the representatives wouldn't have been there...I guess you might consider that a little crazy???

5) What is your dream vehicle? I'm not a dreamer of vehicles, believe it or not...I like one that doesn't cause problems, comfortable. I currently drive a Honda Accord, and I am very happy with it. It drives good, has all the features that I want/need. Sure, there are better/more expensive cars...I just don't sit around fantasizing.

6) Road trip! What's the best place your vehicle has ever taken you? That is a hard one...because I have enjoyed every single one of our trips in the car! However, of all of the "road trips" in my vehicle...I guess I will have to say New Orleans simply because of our love for the architecture, culture, seeing the swamps, just the variety of stuff we were able to do on the trip.

7) What is the longest trip you have made? I think the longest trip in the car would be from here (Nashville, TN) to Washington DC. The longest trip overall I think would be Jackson Hole, Wyoming (where we spent our honeymoon).

8) With whom have you spent the most time in a vehicle? Since I've been married, of course I have spent the most time in a vehicle with my husband, Michael. However, growing up...I spent many hours in a car with my mom and brother.

Wedding Lyric Canvas Project

I've been working on this post for months (literally). You can say that it has been a labor of love. I was inspired by a lyric canvas art project that I saw on Pinterest several months ago, actually around Christmas of last year. It ended up inspiring my husband and I to completely change the theme within our master bathroom.

Since this inspired a mini makeover in our master bathroom, I will have a before and after post following the project tutorials that I did to transform our bathroom (which there were several). I will go ahead and state that we previously had chinese sayings/orchids/etc. as decor (which I had grown tired of), and we have now transformed to a personalization theme.

When I saw this idea on Pinterest, I fell in love. Here is where I addressed my desire to do this project several months ago here on this blog. I knew I wanted to do something similar. While I didn't do mine like my "pinspiration", I am glad they got my creative juices flowing. I discussed with my husband, and we settled on doing the song "Valentine" by Jim Brickman. This was in our wedding. I've also explained the significance of this song in several past posts, such as here. Here is a close up look of the finished project:

Materials for this project included:

My Silhouette CAMEO
Coordinations Scrapbook paper
Sander (to sand scrapbook paper)
Distress Ink and sponge
Sharpie
12" x 12" Canvases
Mod Podge (to adhere scrapbook paper to canvas)
Picture hangers
Enamel Spray

I wanted a weathered finish to my project, so I purchased a special scrapbook paper, Coordinations, which allows different techniques such as crumbling, sanding with sander, staining, etc. The first step I did was crumble and sand to bring out an antique finish.
With my Silhouette CAMEO software, I formatted each scrapbook paper and printed each scrapbook paper separately. This was done with the sketch pen. The CAMEO only did an outline of the words...SOOO...
I carefully colored in each and every letter, word, etc. with my fine point sharpie....(see why it took a while...this is where my perfectionism comes in handy!).
Once I had all of the words filled in with sharpie, I began distressing the paper with distress ink, using a sponge. This aged the scrapbook paper even more (in addition to the previous sanding).
When this is all completed and dry, I mod podged the scrapbook paper onto 12" x 12" canvases. I was careful not to get the mod podge on the front because I didn't want to blur the front.
As a finishing touch, I sprayed Enamel Spray on the front to seal the work.
Finally, super glue a picture hanger on the back....and then the fun begins...equal spacing and remaining level on the wall!!! I'm blessed to have a patient husband!

Since this song is so sentimental to us, this project makes my heart smile each time I enter our master bathroom. However, it could be altered several different ways. A favorite scripture, poem, etc. Then, there are several ways of even creating it that could be altered to make it personalized different; because I did mine very different from "pinspiration". I love having "things of meaning around me (i.e. scripture, phrases I love, this song, etc.)...So, what do you think? Do you like having special words, poems, scriptures of meaning in your home? Getting to Know You Series....Siblings

This was so unique...I just had to try it out. I think one of the funnest and most rewarding aspects of blogging is when we pull the proverbial curtain back on the author of a blog and get to know them. Then, it is just icing on the cake when we are able to make a new friend! So...I'M IN!!! This week, apparently we are discussing siblings!

Getting To Know You: Sibilings

1) How many siblings do you have and what are their names?

I have one brother, and his name is Joshua; however, I call him several different names. JB, Bradley (his middle name), Josh as well Joshua are all names that he "goes by". Both of my parents remarried when my brother and I were older (I was college age and older with both, my brother was high school and older)...so, we weren't really raised with our step brothers and sisters. However, we do have several. Due to our parents both remarrying, we also have 7 step siblings; however, we only see them occasionally if rarely. Here is a lovely picture of my brother, JB:

2) What is the age range among the children in your family?

My brother and I are five and 1/2 years apart in age. I am the oldest of the two. If you were to take into account step siblings...the range increases dramatically. There are several older than me, but my brother is still the youngest.

3) In what ways are you like your siblings?

Josh and I are actually very different in many ways. However, we do have a lot of core qualities that are the same. He has a warm, caring and loving heart, even if he doesn't want to admit it sometimes. He values family and has a strong sense of family. He has an incredible work ethic, and is EXTREMELY smart (especially when he puts his mind to something). We share all of these traits. Now don't get me wrong...there are traits we don't share...no two people are alike! And, I'm sure there are things I'm not thinking of...

4) In what ways are you different from your siblings?

Josh and I "see" the world differently. That is basically the best way that I can put it. We might see the same exact news article, and we interpret it different due to our views. This is how we are most different...our views. However, eventhough we are "different" in this respect...I feel we still respect each other. Respect of others, regardless of disagreements of lifestyle, opinions, etc. is important.

5) What is the craziest sibling story you've got?

When you have a sibling, how can you not have crazy stories? Yes, I have many...but, I think that I won't share those here to respect him...and maybe me :)

6) Any treasured memories or routines you shared with your siblings?

I can't say that we have any specific "routines". However, I have MANY memories with my brother. One special memory...he walked me down the aisle on the day of my wedding. Also, when I purchased my first house when I was still single, Josh moved in with me for a couple years while he was still going to college. We have LOTS of memories (mostly good, a few bad)...however, it gave us a great opportunity to live together and grow as "adults" rather than "child siblings".

Another one of my most vivid memories from our childhood that has rolled over into adulthood is that we had this one record growing up that my mom would play as we were getting ready for church each Sunday morning (a gospel record). And to this day, if one of us begins singing one of the songs, we all can sing the songs on that record word for word! Clearly... we continue to make memories each and every day.

7) What are your siblings' best talents?

My brother is very talented. When he decides that he wants to do something, he tends to be GREAT!!! Growing up, he was very involved with sports...and, he was always playing on all-star teams and traveling teams....HE WAS GOOD!! Then, he grew an interest in wanting to learn guitar around high school age. He began teaching himself, and now he is great at it, as well as other stringed instruments. Like I said...he is VERY TALENTED in all areas that he applies himself!!

8) You and your sibling get to share one perfect meal. What is on the table?

Growing up, every Sunday after church my mother's side of the family would go down to my grandparents' farm and we would have a large lunch. YUMMY!!! Great memories. Now, one of my favorite meals that I look forward to (and I can pretty much vouch for my brother as well) is the family meal get togethers that we have for birthdays, holidays and special occasions. Of course, these family meals are the best (and anything cooked by my grandma), and they can't be matched ANYWHERE. (It could have something to do with company...but, the food "SURE IS DELICIOUS!") Josh has to drive in 10 hours from Washington D.C. for any get together; but, I know that he would totally agree with me on the perfect meal!
