I Will Find You mini-series on Netflix has been grabbing a lot of attention on Netflix. They say it has been trending across Netflix India as the most-viewed content for the last few weeks. I wrapped it up in about a week. This series does everything well. There are no real mismatches in terms of our expectations and what the series delivers. The story is intriguing, and the many twists that David Burroughs goes through to find his son keep you hooked to catch the next episode. But is this mini-series as awesome as some Instagram reviewers are making you believe? The answer is midway, and you need to be clear in asking some questions:

Are you looking for a cerebral crime drama?

I Will Find You is somewhat there, but not all the way. It builds up rather well to the revelation, but it does present one question - realistically, what are the chances of so many things building up, like a well-timed machine, simultaneously for a young boy to be seemingly murdered in his family home? This Netflix series oscillates between being creatively intriguing and overly biased towards those willing to help David Burroughs uncover the shocking truth about his son. David manages to defeat the FBI and the local cops repeatedly. Leave the out-of-jail trail; his prison escape itself seems far too easy.

Are you looking for a weekend Netflix show?

I Will Find You can be a great choice if you are looking for a crime drama series on Netflix to watch over the weekend. It is just 8-episodes long, and the length really does not feel that long. Overall, the pace is good. There is very little fluff in the content. You are surely not going to feel bored, but there are some characters, particularly the investigating teams, that seem right out of an average-quality character sketchbook. The FBI personnel seem so predictable, and you will feel they are trying to overact to make their characters look believable, but they fail despite their best efforts.

Are you a Harlan Coben fan?

I Will Find You, a crime thriller, will not disappoint you. In typical Harlan Coben fashion, everybody carries a story in the show. Everybody is seemingly related to each other. The crime scene does not say much. The ending becomes somewhat evident in the second-last episode. Every piece of evidence points to David Burroughs having murdered his son. He looks perfect as the repentant and, later, the vengeful father who will do anything to find out the truth. However, his best friend, played by Jonathan Tucker, and sister-in-law, Britt Lower, are not convincing. You needed some real chemistry to believe that they would take a bullet to stand up for David, but they just don't come across as convincing.

Most importantly, are you ready not to overthink the plot as being realistic enough?

I Will Find You, a crime thriller at its core, takes away the leverage it creates upfront in terms of being a bit raw or surreal. There are way too many coincidences happening, and these happen too comfortably. The replacement dead body has a genetic disorder that has to show up in the DNA report, and the kid who is presumed murdered has a genetic birthmark right on his face - again, a very unique type of birthmark that just does not happen to everybody. The storyline uses the 'plot unfolding' treatment way too close, on the brink of looking difficult to believe, but if you park your thinking voice outside, David Burroughs' quest to find his son is rather well cooked...give it a shot!

The Boroughs is your perfect OTT watch if you don't want to keep on following the storylines season after season, and if prequels and sequels irritate you. I personally believe that the standards are defined to an inimitable standard by the original, and this certainly holds true for The Boroughs - this show on Netflix India has been trending passively. It is very watchable. It is something you could devour over the weekend. The cast is led by the never-appreciated Alfred Molina, who, I believe, is one of Hollywood's biggest casualties in terms of real performers not being given a chance. He certainly took all the time in the world to arrive on the OTT platform. He has arrived well - The Boroughs is like a lightweight frappé with bits & pieces of some jump-scares and a bit of monstrosity here and there. Overall, the storyline is tight, though not as fresh or unique as some social media content creators might want you to believe. The Boroughs have no lame moments. It does not try to explain the reasons why some people are so sold on the idea of immorality.

However, the biggest factor, or factors, that make The Boroughs so watchable on Netflix India is the star cast. Not just Alfred Molina, every damn character, in whatever little role, performs admirably well. For the serial horror content followers, The Boroughs will not shock you. For those who love mysteries on Netflix, The Boroughs will not keep your curiosity overstimulated. But for those who can spot the right content in terms of brilliance line-up of performers, without trying to find brilliance in the story or special effects, The Boroughs will hold up rather well. I watched it across the 8 episodes in about 2 weeks. My advice - try to complete it within a week. Don't over-discuss it.

The Boroughs is watchable on a smaller screen, too. It puts an entirely new spin on old age homes, families cutting away the ageing population, loneliness, fractured relationships, and how we process ageing. The Boroughs will make you ponder - what did you do with your time here? Did you take that vacation your spouse always wanted? Did you tuck your old parents into bed, or do you believe there is still "lots" of time?

The Boroughs OTT Netflix show creates some friction, asking you these questions. There is a bit of dark humor too, sprinkled uncannily when you expect it the least. The BIG surprise is the arrival of Geena Davis! I have loved her in some movies from the 90s, but honestly, when I first saw her in The Boroughs, I thought she might not be able to speak. That skin treatment, or Botox, or whatever she has gotten done, has not been kind to her. You feel like something inside is holding back her upper lip!

2 Recreated Songs Reinforce the Mediocrity that Plagues Bollywood

I just watched the less-than-a-minute teaser songs for the next installment of the Welcome franchise and Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, and I must say that the content streamed during this attention-deprived watch time was as average as it gets. Come to think of it, Chunnari-Chunnari remains a bit of a contemporary classic. The song was rendered by Alisha Chinai, and it was very different from what we were used to hearing in those days. Add Salman's dance moves to it, and Chunnari-Chunnari became a cult classic without being crowned one. Now, we have our guy, Varun Dhawan, swooning to it, trying to create the same magic, but honestly, he falls flat on his face. When Varun Dhawan arrived, gossip had built into a crescendo - this guy is the new-age Govinda, the next mass entertainer who has been literally groomed at home by the sultan of mass appeal masala movies, David Dhawan. Honestly, I too believed the same. When Varun Dhawan emerged on the scene, stepping away from his Student of the Year space, he created a strong case for himself. He was supposed to be the younger, more agile, and slightly more upmarket version of Govinda. And then, you watch the teaser of Chunnari Chunnari from Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai and derive the conclusion is not difficult at all - it has been more than a decade since Varun was splashed across song-and-dance focused scripts and still, he is no match for Chi-Chi.

He has the abs, he gyrates as well, he can do somersaults even when sipping hot tea served in colonial style, but there is something he just does not have - that something is what Govinda and even Salman had during the late 90s and early 2000s. Every time the phrase "Chunnari-Chunnari" emerged in the original song, there was this little jiggle, a little shake from Salman or Sushmita that resonated so well with the fans. And there were people who were calling Sushmita somewhat plastic and held back as compared to Salman! Now watch the recreated version from Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, and you realize how good she was and how well she and Salman performed to the choreographer's script.

The biggest miss in the recreation of Chunnari Chunnari from Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is Varun's absolute vacuum of any chemistry with the two ladies sharing the dance routine with him - Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur. Now this might seem strange, but try to think of the last few Varun Dhawan movies you watched. Hold on to this thought and quickly recall the first few movies he did with Alia Bhatt. Can you catch where this is going?

When he was this young gun and his movies were delivering impact, he had this on-screen synchronization with Alia - they looked good together, they looked like a pair, and their collective mathematics just made sense. Now, watch the 2026 version of Chunnari Chunnari; it is the exact opposite. Varun Dhawan is as detached a hero as can be from his leading lady or ladies. Despite Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur trying to look good, neither of them dances in a way that matches the beats of the song. Pooja Hegde is a big miss. Her presence in this song just highlights the common perception about her - she has a toned body, she looks great in Instagram shots, and she might act decently too, but owning a dance routine, making your body move to the song so that the lyrics and the beats aren't competing with your tutored dance steps, is still a challenge for her. Mrunal Thakur, whom I do like, seems wasted in the song. Her red dress and a plastered smile just don't have the energy that complements Varun's presence or competes with the original Chunnari-Chunnari. What Salman and Sushmita achieved in the original number stands unchallenged as of today, thanks to the Director and Dance Director of Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, who have managed to holistically mess up a great opportunity to recreate a truly enjoyable dance number.

Just one more thing about Varun Dhawan before I move on to the next average-as-hell content piece starring Akshay Kumar - Varun seems jaded, uninterested, and lost even in his forte. He has been referred to as the most passionate dancer along with Tiger Shroff, but the energy just is not there. The facial expressions are the same. He needs to visit his Badlapur days - what was the mindset like during those days? Is the 2-second shirtless routine still capable of upselling him as a category B hero, and that too in roles where he has to carry the movie and be the center of attraction of two ladies? Foreign locations don't matter that much anymore - half of Gujarat and Delhi are visiting foreign lands during the summer vacations. Bagpiper armies looking like poorly paid supporting artists or extras don't make us feel superior - half of the UK and perhaps one-fourth of Europe is filled with software Indians, so the visual impact is lost.

Think of Akshay Kumar & Katrina, and memories of Welcome surface in the most unadulterated manner. Now, bet your money on this - 3 weeks after the release of Welcome to the Jungle, the mention of the song 'Uchha Lamba Kad' will still bring back flashes of Akki and Katrina only. Nobody will ever recall the current rendition of the song that has Akshay and Disha Patani trying to impress the audience. Wait. I think I know what the problem is - they are not actually trying to impress anyone at all! They did their push-ups, the make-up, and followed instructions...as simple as that! Why are we even expecting them to simmer something onscreen when it is clear in the song that they are two individually performing artists? Why are they trying to pair someone astronomically younger than Akshay when we have accepted his greying and the Papa Bear complex, where he keeps bestowing wisdom on all younger/junior performers?

Moreover, why are they trying to pair him with Disha Patani, who is undergoing an identity crisis of her own? Is this not the Disha we saw and adored in MS - the Untold Story? Which version of Disha is in the recreated version of 'Uchha Lamba Kad' - the Instagram version that flaunts the minimum wearables, the movie version that pouts, or the one who made us believe she was for real a few years back? I guess the director just did not know. Perhaps it is a norm to pair Akshay with a younger lady. Does he insist on this in his movie contract? We will never know. We do know his penchant for desi ghee and sleeping by 9 pm, but this song has him smoking cigars. Let us deduce this mathematically. He is smoking an artificial cigar, with make-believe smoke, and he is paired with Disha version L [for "Lost"], who looks completely at unease in bandage wraparound costumes. The overall effect? As ignorable and average as the recreated song!

A state trooper couple could not possibly expect that a routine license & registration check would give way to homicide, and that too, linked with a serial killer. Psycho Killer does a great job of not wasting any time in trying to create a storyline. There is no build-up. From the first minute of the movie, it is clear that Psycho Killer will get nasty with more murders without the need to explain why the masked murderer won't spare anyone. What follows after the homicide upfront is Jane Archer trying to hunt down her husband's killer. She fits into the role rather well, looking vulnerable and determined. Talking about the performances, James Rogers, who plays the masked murderer, fits right into the character. However, the director seems intent on not allowing the viewers to see James' face, which really does not make a lot of sense - this guy is a mass murderer, he is on a killing spree, he wears goggles & kills with a mask on, and he is not trying to hide too much - then why keep his face cloudy and hard to see?

Anyways, streaming on Jio Hotstar India, Psycho Killer is a good watch for folks who enjoy movies focused on hunting down serial killers. However, don't expect Silence of the Lambs or anything remotely related to Hannibal Lecter. I must say that James Rogers' voice justifies his selection for the role, but was it all natural or modulated using some technology - I guess we will never know! What I can be sure about and guarantee to fellow violent content-loving folks is his mask. The makers of the Psycho Killer really did their groundwork to come up with the mask used in the Psycho Killer. It is not a superhero mask for sure. It is not anything like the weird face mask used in 'In Violent Nature' or Jason's outings, but there is nothing remarkably detailed about it. But it fits the character of James Rogers so well. His masked appearance is what convinces you of his ability to kill without remorse. The best thing is that the choice of mask or the reason to wear it is not dissected by crime scene investigators or criminal psychologists in the Psycho Killer movie. Our guy is intent on wearing it; he wears it so well, the mask makes him look dark & menacing, and therefore, it is good to go - as simple as that!

This is exactly where Psycho Killer goes horribly wrong. There is literally nothing that even tries to hint at what is fueling this rage in James Rogers' character. Yes, he wants to open a door to Hell by killing everyone in his path, but people like me need to know more - how did this transition happen? Loving Satan can be generic. Everyone who loves Satan is not supposed to kill at large. Are there several killings the Psycho Killer has in mind that help him qualify to reserve his spot alongside Satan?

The team of Psycho Killer did really well, but messed up a bit in not storyboarding the character well. We don't need every killer out there killing because of childhood abuse or an inherent tendency to consume human flesh, but you can just say that Satan lovers must murder a lot to help them ascend. Come to think of it, the makers of Psycho Killer handled Seven too - and this was a well-executed movie throughout!

This is the only thing that is holistically wrong with SEND HELP - the movie I managed to grab on Jio Hotstar. The thing about SEND HELP is that it starts with a lot of promise. The movie does not really surprise you at any point if you have watched the type of content streaming on Netflix India ever since the Pandemic tore apart the world's balance. There is nothing you will recall about SEND HELP a week after having watched it, but during this time, if someone asks you to recommend it or to banish it, you will say that the director missed plenty of opportunities in making SEND HELP a more watchable movie. I believe the entire build-up to watching it was spoiled by content labeling experts.

On some of the best movie detailing platforms, it has been tagged as a Psychological Horror movie, which it surely isn't. In fact, there is nothing too psychological about it. Linda Liddle does not suffer from extreme personality disorientation. She is not 'split,' and neither is she born with the will to kill or hunt down living beings. She just gives in to her dark side when she is marooned on an island with her arrogant boss. I still believe this is director Sam Raimi's most mediocre outing, considering it is 2026, and he must be a seasoned Hollywood director by now. People isolated in Robinson Crusoe-type situations make chopsticks and weave plates out of vegetation? And to make this worse, you had Rachel McAdams be that person - has the director even seen Rachel's body of work, and on that account, her body? To make it highly difficult to believe in the first 10 minutes, she is presented as a passive, submissive, but brilliant worker on the office floor.

After another 15 minutes, she seems like trained by the Navy SEALS in the backyards of the White House to survive. She transforms into an outdoor lifestyle survival expert so suddenly that you need to revisit the earlier scenes - what did you miss? When did that transformation happen? She weaves a handbag, a cross-body bag, makes tables, creates a nice Hawaii-inspired hut, and forages in the rainforest like she was raised by Amazonians. And this was done by a lady who, until 20 minutes back, was supposed to be the undemanding office geek! Is this the work of the same Sam Raimi who gave us the massively lovable and still adorable Spider-Man in 2002? Watch SEND HELP on Jio Hotstar India with consideration that the bloopers are Bollywood level, the performances are good, and the only thing that you will remember about the movie is the landscape - the island location would be Googled by now, and I am assuming that in another 2 weeks, a billionaire helipad would be constructed there in real - the natural scenery is actually that good!

Ideally, the main character should be vulnerable, struggling, overwhelmed, and someone you would normally not bet your money on. No One Gets Out Alive does the characterization to perfection using this approach. Our lady is an immigrant, perpetually out of money, trying to hold on to some type of optimism, and her character reeks of mental health constantly challenged by self-doubt. Taking plenty of clues from how immigration, the more unmanaged type, happens across the US, No One Gets Out Alive presents Ambar as someone seemingly destined to struggle for the rest of her life. To make matters worse, she takes up refuge in a boarding house, which is where nearly 80% of the movie seems to have been shot. The boarding house is the perfect backdrop to this psychological horror movie, with its creaky floors, big rooms with dark corners, ducts that let in the whispers, and staircases that always look daunting. No One Gets Out Alive does not overdo the characterization. You watch Ambar for a couple of minutes, and you get it, even if you have not tasted the illegal immigrant life, even if your college fees were paid years in advance, and perhaps, you have never reconsidered going to a physician's office because of out-of-pocket expenses that an out-of-work mom might not be able to bear.

No One Gets Out Alive gets the setup almost perfect. The background music is creepy or intentionally absent in patches. The twisted brothers managing the boarding house are the right mix of being intrusive, aloof, and weird. Ambar does not get to speak much, but when she does, it is rarely a pleasant conversation. She is convincingly cold, hungry, and has a look in her eyes that makes you feel convinced that, yes, far away somewhere along the less populated end of Cleveland. She speaks to the shadows; there are faces in the shadows; there are bodies that move like shadows, and through all of this, Ambar has the resolve not to leave the place because this is perhaps the only thing she can actually afford.

The best thing about No One Gets Out Alive is that it does not diffuse the curiosity at any point. You can feel the buildup coming, and when it does, towards the last 30 minutes of the movie, it justifies the direction and the performances. The entity that needs to be fed, resting in the basement, is unlike the folklore horror you might have seen. It has not been borrowed from Freddy Krueger or any of Stephen King's characters. It is there in the movie for about 5 minutes, but it stays with you. As it turns out, this 'being' has some mythological, perhaps Aztec, origins with a moth-like silhouette, and this humanoid-cum-monster thing makes you believe in the promise that feeding humans to it will actually grant you your wishes and great fortune.

Watch No One Gets Out Alive with realistic expectations. There are jump scares, but very few. The storyline is tight. Overall, the performances are good. It is a bit of a creature feature without making you feel you are watching a VFX presentation. The darkness of greed and the depths of despair are easily felt. This is not top-notch body horror. It is not about gore or last-minute shocks. No One Gets Out Alive paces along beautifully. It has a simple story to tell. It takes time to explain how immigrant women have been sacrificed for personal fortunes without too much fuss.

I watched No One Gets Out Alive on Netflix India during the afternoon and wondered how the non-movie reality of this story is also perhaps real - undocumented men and women, perhaps children too, locked up in basements with the worst things being done to them while on the surface, out in the real world, nobody would even suspect something is happening because such people actually never 'existed'. To a certain extent, the concluding shots of the movie are suggestive of a sequel though I would not bet seriously on it.

Still, anxiety has morphed into something more tangible and relatable, and it has become a lot more penetrative. Also, I feel that anxiety is becoming increasingly environmental, and by saying this, I don't mean anxiousness due to greenhouse gases or carbon footprints, but anxiety seeping in slowly in all facets of our lives, such as:

Food-related anxieties: eggs don't feel the same, milk does not taste the same, and favorite fruits carry the risk of extreme synthetics. Parental anxiety?

Streaming on Netflix-India, Bring Her Back does not do anything remarkably different or special. It tries the tried & tested route of opening up the plot slowly, revealing the real face of the sinister but emotionally-challenged caregiver who just cannot get over the death of her daughter. You really cannot compliment the Director for putting in jump scares or some shocking twists in Bring Her Back - streaming now on Netflix. At best, Bring Her Back is good for someone who has not seen a lot of horror flicks recently. In the last 5 years, there has been a surge in the number of horror genre movies that try to pique your curiosity with complicated storylines. If you have watched a handful, you have probably seen them all. You will certainly not find Bring Her Back a great watch. However, the occasional horror genre, someone getting started in this niche just might find Bring Her Back interesting. The blind Asian girl in the movie is not that convincing.

Strangely, she seems too comfortable with her condition. I am not imposing an opinion that anyone with visual impairment should feel like a victim all the time, but you are talking about Piper here, who loses her parents, has just lost her father, and is now living in some type of social foster care, but somehow, there is not much resentment or anger in her. The better storylines in this genre pan out a lot better when there is depth to every character. Has Piper been characterized well in Bring Her Back? No. This could have been done a lot better. For me, her brother, Andy, came close to being convincing, but then again, for the type of trauma that the story tries to portray, he could have been a lot better. But still, the guy playing Andy did a good job overall. And then, I recall one scene where he exits a temporary hospital stay, I think, and comes back with undereye shadows that resemble a malnourished peasant. How could the director of Bring Her Back miss something so obviously artificial and superficial when handling the final edits? What makes Bring Her Back a bit interesting is the first 10 minutes. The opening scenes are high on video footage [VHS tapes that have become rather common recently] playing on screen, where some type of sacrificial body offering is happening. This is done by folks speaking Russian, and there is some body nudity too. This is when the idea surfaces in your mind - the plot of Bring Her Back could be really twisted because it seems like videotaping of human sacrifice, and this is happening in a very crude, raw form.

You glance at the IMDb rating, and you believe that with these opening scenes and a score of more than 7, Bring Her Back is definitely going to make your stomach churn a bit. But none of this happens! The storyline moves smoothly. There are no issues with the background sound effects either. However, many things remain intentionally undercooked. Andy's childhood abuse is mentioned and handled quickly. There is no mention of how the brother-sister duo loses their mother. Their father's death seems unworthy of being mentioned more than thrice. Laura has worked in social services or social care for children for more than two decades. Her own daughter died in her backyard, she retired, started volunteering for state-appointed foster parenting roles, lives in a massive but isolated home, and still, none of these things raises any suspicion among the people around her.

Wait! There is more. For about 10 days or so, Laura has had a strange kid in her house. The soul-carrier or soul transferer medium of sorts, this kid, called Oliver, seems to eat nothing, hardly speaks, and never bathes. To say that Oliver looks spooky would be an understatement. There is something outright and astronomically wrong with the kid, and yet, while he is there at Laura's residence, it engages no attention whatsoever. What you are likely to remember as being somewhat different is the explanation of the process to bring back the dead, which includes eating the human body, purging the soul, and transferring the soul. There are some Satanically shot videos, some flesh-eating scenes, a bit of cannibalism in a horror genre benchmarked way, and some violence, but largely, Bring Her Back does not keep you hooked. I had a cup of coffee, broke away for lunch, took a couple of calls from the office, and yet, it seemed like I did not miss much despite not pausing the movie. Yes, Bring Her Back is not that special!

Is this an outright horror movie? NO.
Are there some highly unpredictable twists in the plot? NO
Do the main actors do their job well? YES
Are there any stomach-churning scenes? NO

The original post went up in January 2020: This was when browsing for a new series to follow after having just wrapped up Good Girls on Netflix that I realized that we are perhaps sitting on one of the biggest movie story inspiring moments - this is not just speculation, but a surety about the things about to come. I feel assured that TV series, web series, documentary series, and many conspiracy theory movie plots will use this pandemic as the main storyline. The ingredients are just about perfect for plot-creators. Just imagine using a Chinese angle in which it is found that the Coronavirus is the result of a man-made engineering effort aimed at displacing the US from its super-power status. Other options include the Coronavirus taking a more serious form and becoming largely airborne. Now, the movie could be about how a family navigates cities razed to the ground by the virus, en route to some form of magical cure that cannot be found anywhere else.

Other options include how the society in the aftermath of the Coronavirus pandemic is divided into two sections - those who can easily afford the immunity and those who are shut off and forced to let fate take over without the means to buy the treatment. Invariably, a hero would arise from these underprivileged sections and challenge the entire system. Closer to home, there could be a storyline where it is found that state governments perhaps allowed the virus to take over towns or regions where they were losing control, using the lockdown to manipulate the environment to overrule the public sentiments. My only advice would be not to turn these stories into something parallel to the zombie movie genre. That line of thought has been overcooked. Right now, on Netflix, there are at least 5 zombie, viral-themed series to choose from. The Corona story type can also include love blossoming in times of social distancing. It can also be about how self-imposed isolation can turn supposedly normal people into the OCD afflicted. It might also be about how cutting away from social interactions can perhaps push a person into meeting the inner demons head-on, and hence, an inner conflict begins. The possibilities are endless...these are just some that come instantly to mind!!

The film begins as a standoff between the sheriff and the mayor over COVID rules and quickly grows into something much messier — covering racism, protests, social media misinformation, and the general feeling that everyone in America in 2020 had lost their minds simultaneously. Critics were genuinely divided about whether the film says anything meaningful or just recreates the chaos without adding anything to it. One school of thought says that Eddington is the most accurate portrait of what 2020 felt like in America. Another school of thought says it is a very expensive way of showing people something they already remember living through, without actually explaining anything.

For Indian viewers, the specific American setting — mask mandates, the Black Lives Matter protests, small-town gun culture — will feel a bit distant. However, the central idea of a society where nobody trusts anyone, where WhatsApp-style rumours have replaced facts, and where ordinary people turn on each other over things that were never actually in dispute, will feel very familiar. Swap New Mexico for any Indian city in April 2020, and the atmosphere is recognisable.

The film mixes real footage from the lockdown — including actual smartphone videos and news clips — with scripted drama in a way that makes it genuinely difficult to tell what is real and what is acted. This sounds like it might be confusing to watch, but it actually works powerfully, because the lockdown itself felt unreal to the people living through it. It is slow, quiet, and more interested in atmosphere and feeling than in plot. Viewers who have not seen Jia Zhangke's earlier films may find it hard to follow the references he makes to his own previous work.

Yes, the opening scenes remind you of Cliffhanger. However, as you move ahead, APEX transforms into something entirely different. For one, it is Charlize Theron and not Stallone - while I realize this is a poor attempt at being humorous, you get the feeling that just like Stallone, Charlize Theron trained really hard for the role. You can easily spot the mean muscle mass that must have been earned over a few months. One look at her and you know that she did the groundwork and perhaps, much more than that, to look part of the role. The script just demands it! APEX is not the usual adventure story themed around urban folks who take up something in the mountains they cannot handle. The entire layout for APEX is highly focused on survival. The landscapes keep changing, but the intensity of Theron and the taut storytelling is unforgiving. Just like the opening sequence in Cliffhanger that renders Stallone guilty, Sasha [Charlize Theron] is overwhelmed by the sadness of letting go of her partner off a massive, steep, and snowy peak. She just looks like a mountaineer with all the gear attached to her. Just like Stallone, Sasha does not speak much. She clearly did not like human company much before the ill-fated climb, and with her grief, she becomes even more solo, taking off to trails that are not meant even for the seasoned adventurers.

However, where the story totally breaks away from its Cliffhanger influences, and this happens within the first 30 minutes, is an ultra-psychotic Aussie who seems like an outdoor survival artist who has been preying on unknowing families who, unfortunately, traveled to his part of the Aussie terrain. I hadn't seen this guy before. He performed admirably. Until the credits rolled, I had no idea who I was watching playing the role of an outdoorsman turned hunter turned serial killer. He really takes to the role and performs with gusto, almost as good as Theron does. You have to realize and acknowledge that this is a very young performer going head-on with a seasoned international performer like Charlize. Nearly 90% of the movie has these two, indulging in relentless chase & scare sequences. No jump-thrills in the APEX, but the I-will-hunt-you chases were done beautifully. There is a scene that suggests chopping up people, turning them into human meat, salting the meat, and turning human remains into beef jerky type of chewies.

For me, the biggest differentiator for APEX is the outdoor landscape photography and showing us Australian locations most of us don't even know about. You have waterfalls, mountains, hills, lakes, rivers, ponds, caves, and forests shifting quickly, from one survival background to another. The pace of storytelling is just amazing! You can literally feel the soil, the mud, grime, and dirt, and there is a lot of it. The supposed prey and her predator roll in it, fight in it, and challenge each other in absolutely awesomely shot survival scenes. Every small stone that Theron grabs while ascending the mountains looks so real. Every time her hunter yanks one of the climbing gear ropes, the visual effect makes you feel that this is an expert - no questions about it. In fact, the pivotal turnaround points in the movie feature the climbing and survival gear in some way. The only smartphone to feature in the movie is smashed to pieces, and it deserves to lie dead in the Aussie outdoors because this movie has no room for anything overly polished or urbane.

IMDb tends to be a bit generous, and its close-to-7 rating for Do Deewane Seher Mein somewhat underlines this trend. Please don't assume that I am trying to trash the movie just for the sake of doing it online and gathering some clicks and recommendations. The movie is actually good! That said, it is a bit too long, it tends to meander a bit too much, and in parts, it undid the great impression it created upfront. Both the stars, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Mrunal Thakur, prove that the younger lot in Bollywood can act, though we cannot say the same for some folks belonging to the Pandey lineage. Siddhant's passive flirting in the movie was smooth like butter and very realistic - guys who struggle with making a move without coming on too strong can take a few cues from him. However, Do Deewane Seher Mein could have done a lot better by not trying to explain what it presents as the reasons for childhood trauma. Just imagine this - you start a movie, you start liking it, the first 30 minutes are so good, and then, as you get curious about what is going to happen now, it starts slowing down. The storyline meekly starts revisiting what is troubling our protagonists repeatedly, like a precise clockwork set for every 15 minutes. The direction starts ruining the fun around the 1-hour mark. It is then that you realize a couple of things.

The adorable Mrunal has been utterly wasted in Bollywood so far. She is borderline Gen Z for me and packs a bit of classical charm. She fits seamlessly into the role. Absolutely no doubt that she was a great pick for the role. Well done to the casting directors. But one aspect where her gorgeousness misfits the role - she suffers from a type of early adulthood trauma about her physical looks and continues to suffer from it despite being a somewhat independent and very opinionated character. I just couldn't relate to her staying fixated on her non-textbook looks when she happens to look so good, so effortlessly on screen. She instantly reminded me of Bhumi Pednekar, who did something similar in Dum Laga Ke Haisha, but was a lot more convincing. How Bhumi plummeted into her ongoing spiral downwards still amazes & shocks me! Coming back to Mrunal, she performs rather well, but our guy, Siddhant Chaturvedi, delivers another espresso-like reminder that he is on the way up. I foresee some really big banners just around the corner for him. I am not that good at keeping up with what is trending in the men's grooming/men's lifestyle niche, but it would be a surprise if he hasn't become the brand ambassador for some of the online brands in this domain.

Going back to the movie, the massive upside for the movie is the contemporary storytelling. It blends our professional lives, eating into our peace, the impressions we carry from our childhood, families hurting their members despite their good intentions, and how people can grow up, grow old, and even die with their insecurities. The biggest downside is the Director repeatedly going back, revisiting these themes even when the storyline could have been better served with a quick closure. The Mumbai property on view has the old-world vibes, and the rented apartment has the typical cosmopolitan appeal. Some other misses, too, like Ila Arun being wasted. I have always wondered why she does not act more and seems to be missing from all the OTT content, but this is not the appearance I would have wanted. Utterly wasted!

The witch isn't well rendered. She seems confused. Does she want her victims to suffer? Is she trying to transform them into vampires or ghouls, or is she trying to open some gateway for her real powers to arise? What you will like is the setting within the mansion. The spookiness using shadows and dark corners was done well. The performances are good. Some folks raved about the sequence showing the entire arm being pulled out, but to me, it felt somewhat reminiscent of things we have seen too often during the 80s.

This is a translated Indonesian film, so you have to be in the habit of picking up the storyline from the captions. I watched it on Dailymotion, but it might be available on Netflix for your region.
