The biker community is rallying together to support My Sister's House on June 23rd for a seven stop motorcycle ride. With the help from Old Coots on Scoots, Charleston Chapter 70, local bars and businesses, attendance for the ride is anticipated to be over 300 riders. There will also be an after party event at Main Street Bar & Grill in Summerville featuring food & live music, prize drawings, silent auction, bike Wash, and bike show. Registration starts at Low Country Harley Davidson on Dorchester Rd. in N. Charleston at 10:30am with last bike out by 12:30pm. Price for ride: $15 per rider, $10 per passenger or $10 for non riders at the door and includes dinner and live music. All proceeds from the ride will be donated to My Sister's House, Inc.

Established in 1980, My Sister's House is a 501-3c non-profit organization that provides services to women and children courageously dealing with domestic violence in order to prosper past their abuse. A temporary shelter is operated by the organization that houses up to 36 women and children who suffer abuse in the Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties in South Carolina. As South Carolina currently ranks #2 in the nation for the number of women murdered by men (95% of those are domestic violence related homicides), My Sister's House, Inc.'s services are greatly needed in our community.

Chase After a Cure was started in 2009 by Summerville, S.C., resident Whitney Ringler and her family after her son, Chase, was given a 30 percent chance of survival after being diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma. Chase survived this aggressive form of cancer. Chase After a Cure supports families of childhood cancer patients, raises awareness about childhood cancer, specifically neuroblastoma, and funds childhood cancer research at the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital.
Needtobreathe Classic Presented by Commonwealth Cares Foundation Raises $80,000 for Charleston Nonprofit

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – The 2013 Needtobreathe Classic presented by Commonwealth Cares Foundation raised $80,000 for Palmetto Medical Initiative, a Charleston-based nonprofit committed to providing sustainable, quality health care to those in need while increasing accessibility to global medical missions. That’s twice what the golf tournament raised last year.

PMI has built a medical clinic in Masindi, Uganda, and last year launched a new initiative in Nicaragua. The money raised from the golf tournament will go toward construction and equipment for the new clinic in Viejo, Nicaragua.

Founded in 2007, Commonwealth Cares Foundation is the charitable arm of Commonwealth Financial Group, a Daniel Island-based financial services firm with a division focused on providing financial planning services to physicians and the medical community.

Britt Gilbert, president of Commonwealth Financial Group, went on a medical mission trip to Nicaragua last December so saw first-hand the impact the money from the tournament will have.

“Our mission at Commonwealth is to help people live a life of significance,” Gilbert said. “We work with our clients to identify what matters to them and how they can use their financial goals to have an impact. So it’s incredible for us as a company to live that out in real time.

“We had a beautiful day playing golf at the Daniel Island Club and a great time listening to musicians that night, but we never lost sight of the fact we were spending one day raising money for people in need,” Gilbert added. “That one day of golf will have a lasting impact on the people of Viejo, Nicaragua, for years to come. We will save lives with the money raised from the Needtobreathe Classic.”

This is the fifth year Commonwealth as sponsored the golf tournament, but this year Needtobreathe, a band with South Carolina roots, decide to put its name on the tournament. Other musicians along with athletes, former coaches and actors played in the tournament. Needtobreathe performed an after-party concert along with Tenth Avenue North, John Mark McMillan, Drew Holcomb and Ed Roland of Collective Soul.

Needtobreathe band members Bear Rinehart and Bo Rinehart, brothers from the Seneca, S.C., area, formed the band and play with bass player Seth Bolt. In 2011, they were part of the Taylor Swift Speak Now North American Tour. They recorded their fourth album “The Reckoning” in Charleston. As part of their new Drive All Night Tour, Needtobreathe will perform along with Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors on May 11 at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center.

The date for the 2014 Needtobreathe Classic will be announced this spring and registration will open in late spring or early summer. For sponsorship opportunities, call 843-884-4545.

++++

The tournament drew 180 golfers to the Ralston Creek and Beresford Creek courses at the Daniel Island Club.

Taking first place on the Beresford Creek Course: Robb Speer, Brad Blevins, Allen Speer and Bobby Williamson. Second place: Britt Gilbert, Ken Johnson, Ryan Succup and Brian Brown. Third place: Donnie Shaw, Ronnie Shaw, Jack Shaw and Tim Winkler.

Taking first place on the Ralston Creek Course: Wes Koch, Jamie Koch, Patrick Bachrodt and Andy Yingling. Second place: Susan Griffen, Ellen Murray, Bo Rinehart and John Mark McMillan. Third place: Bubba Shirley, Chad Farmer, Kyle Cassidy and Rob Butler.

Join BEAM in Mt Pleasant - TODAY - Wednesday February 20, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm to learn about stress and how it effects your health.

Join us for great food and drink and learn about stress and how it effects your health. To learn more about Beam, attend a free information session from 5:30-7:30 p.m. this Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Puree Organic Café, 1034 Chuck Dawley Blvd. in Mount Pleasant.

Doors open at 5:30 with a complimentary drink from Puree. Dr. Jesse Ross will give a brief talk at 6 p.m. about neurological stress associations and their impact on the body. Puree’s full menu will be available for participants to order dinner immediately following the presentation. www.healthbylight.com | 843-766-4444.

NBC News Reports: Feeling Stressed? You're not the only one. http://www.healthbylight.com/news.php?id=45

"It's hard to put into words the amount of happiness and relief I have experienced from my sessions at Beam with Dr Jesse Ross. My stress levels are usually through the roof when it comes to dealing with and managing large groups of people and trying to maintain my overly busy lifestyle. Balance has been difficult and stress has been a large factor in my health over the past 10 years. I've recently been blessed with the expertise of Dr Jesse Ross, which has helped me to perform better in the face of stress through Beam's therapies and lifestyle coaching I have received. My stamina has improved greatly and I feel amazing when I wake in the morning. Dr. Ross has been my go to person for all ailments and has been wonderful with helping me find the root of the problem and figuring out what is causing it as opposed to helping me find a way to mask the pain. I recommend everyone to Beam, and even though it's one of those things that even analytical people, such as myself, have a hard time explaining - it's worth having the faith and giving it a try - you'll thank me later - trust me."

~ Camille Key

Presented by the Charleston International Film Festival, the screening will take place at 7:30 PM on Thursday, February 21

at Charleston Music Hall. Tinsley, accompanying the film, will follow the screening with a live musical performance.

Tickets are available online at:http://charlestonmusichall.com.

With production partner Filament Productions, Tinsley created the experimental film in an atypical order of production,

composing the score before the cast and crew were gathered. As the film never had a script, the story advances primarily

through music, acting, and stunning cinematography. A oneofakind film experience, Tinsley describes it as a “modern day silent picture,” adding, “It’s almost like the film is the score.” Tinsley and his bandmates from Dave Matthews Band recorded the film’s soundtrack over a fiveday period in Seattle.

The film follows the story of a young man, Ben Fisher – played by actor Ryan Orr, who returns home to bury his estranged father. On the day of his father’s funeral, Ben goes on a dreamlike journey as he searches for forgiveness. Orr says, “This film is so strong... because it came from a very deep, emotional place.”

After only a few screenings, the film has received rave reviews. One critic at the Virginia Film Festival said, “Highlighted

by an intoxicating musical score, unforgettable visuals, and visceral emotion, this is a film that is not meant to be merely

seen, but experienced.” Rolling Stone magazine describes it as “riveting” and Vibe considers it “outstanding.”

Burwell's Stonefire Grill Shines During Restaurant Week in Charleston

I don't dine in Charleston often; I happen to be more of a Midland's boy as opposed to that of the Lowcountry.

This of course isn't to say I haven't had my fair share of experience with some of the major players in the area: just last week I stopped by The Oak Table which is the columbia member of the Indigo Road Restaurant Group family of restaurants that include The Macintosh and Oak Steakhouse, both of Charleston. So when I made my Saturday night trip to Burwell's, I had a solid frame of reference.

From the first impression Burwell's was not a typical steakhouse. One walks in and traverses a long open foyer and is immediately pulled into the luxe and relaxed atmosphere. The tendency is to say swanky, but with that comes connotations of some sort of snobbish effect which just wasn't there.

If anything, the new restaurant, co-owned by Ken Emery, was approachable with it's original restored 1894 wood paneling and barrel halves as makeshift side tables. Even small details, like bar stools, come into play with their wide seats, conducive to comfort. In the ultimate show of approachability, the chef's kitchen is open and seems a centerpiece for the first level, affording an amount of transparency not found in many restaurants.

My visit was one of the last ones of Restaurant Week and so I enjoyed three courses after surveying the the options on the restaurant's iPad's that are brought to every table for wine suggestions and pictures of the dishes - "next generation" indeed. My first course: duck confit and sunflower sprout salad. The verdict: delicious. The salad was the perfect blend of sweet and savory with just the right amount of crisp from the micro greens.

My second course was a Wood Fired House Ribeye Fillet. It was at this point that I started to realize that the presentation aspect of my experience wouldn't falter all night. There was a parsnip mash that started from some where under the filet and looped around and back up to the haricot vert. The mash was perfectly smooth and surprisingly sweet - if only to me - while the haricot vert contained just enough tang to make the dish linger in my mouth.

Though I'm not a chocolate aficionado I did choose the Chocolate Indulgence to finish off my meal. While chocolate mousse has historically been a bit strong for my palette, the play against the white chocolate noodle found favor in this southern eater.

Burwell's definitely has my vote and I would most definitely recommend them as a great new restaurant in downtown Charleston. Stop by and check out this cool new spot sometime at 14 North Market Street.
