Abraham Lincoln Award nominees are selected by high school students throughout the State. Check out our display in the LRC and pick up an annotated list of all 22 books nominated for this year.

Remember you will be eligible to cast your vote in February for CHS after you have read four of the titles from the list of 22 nominees.

February Book Club Happenings

February is a busy month for book club and the LRC.

We are planning Read Across America (RAA) on March 2nd in honor of Dr.Suess' birthday. This is our annual "Lock in and Read" where a section of the LRC will be reserved for RAA participants during 1st through 3rd hours. Please join us to catch up on that favorite book, enjoy the fellowship of your peer readers and enjoy a slice of birthday cake. There will also be a book swap.

So if you are interested in participating you will need a Field Trip form available in the LRC plus $2.00 and a gently used book if you want to participate in the book swap.

Also happening in February: Vote for your favorite 2010-2011 Abe Book.

Elsewhere is similar to our life where people work, go to school, drive cars, and fall in love. This month book club is reading Spanking Shakespeare by Jake Wizner. "Shakespeare Shapiro has always hated his name and has always gotten teased about it all the way through school. However he may get his revenge through his memoirs, a school project that has chronicled every detail of his life."

Read Spanking Shakespeare and join us after school on Friday to discuss one of the new 2011 Abe Lincoln Award nominees.

Teens at Random House offers an Obituary Generator. It just takes seconds to fill in and is good for a laugh. Bring them to book club to share.

Celebrate Read Across America March 2nd at CHS and join schools across America by spending the first 3 periods of your day reading in the LRC. Just fill out a permission form and have it signed by your teachers and guardian. There will be a $2.00 fee to attend. Forms & money are due by February 25th to

Back by popular demand "Breakfast Book Club" met this morning and discussed our favorite adventure stories. If you haven't read Ink Heart by Cornelia Funk or Maximum Ride by James Patterson you need to put them on your reading list.

The lucky winner of the Books We Love raffle goes to Cynthia G. Congratulations on winning a 7oz Hershey Kiss for Valentine's Day. Thank you for all those that participated in the books we love raffle. Our LRC is decorated to the hilt with paper hearts and the books you love. It looks like Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series is still among your favorite books to read.

January Meeting

Our last book club meeting was held after school on January 8th. Talk buzzed about James Patterson's books creating an exciting atmosphere in the LRC. Everyone enjoyed this month's selection of books because Mr. Patterson offers something for everyone!

February Meeting

After much discussion book club members decided to select a genre in lieu of an author. Why not read or revisit some of our book members favorite "quests" including The Harry Potter series, The Hobbit, Maximum Ride, or Ink Heart just to name a few. Visit the Book Club shelf in the LRC for more titles or browse my Shelfari shelf.

Our next meeting will be after school on February 12th. A special Valentine treat awaits you!

Book club met on Friday, Dec. 11th after school in the LRC. Refreshments were provided and lots of good conversation about last month's author took place. Edgar suggested we feature the author of Maximum Ride for next month, this was quickly seconded by all those in attendance as a fantastic read!

Welcome and Congratulations to our newly elected officers: Liz Fortner - President, Gary Kurowski - Vice President, Laura Dalla Costa - Secretary, Edgar Hernandez and Haley Soutar - Publicity

Book Club is off to a great start, we more that tripled our membership from last year. Way to go WE-GO!

We sponsored our very first author visit in the past two years, welcoming Holly Black author of Tithe, Valiant, and The Good Neighbors her latest book and first graphic novel. Holly spent an entertaining hour at CHS discussing where she gets her inspiration to write novels about fairies living in the 21st Century.

Planning and discussions are on the way about Read Across America in March and a possible Coffee House in April to kick off National Poetry Month.

Our first drawing of the year was held to select a winner for the Abe Award drawing; congratulations to Kaylee Sayner

Each month CHS Book Club will select a participating Abe Award reader to win a $10.00 gift certificate to Borders Book Store. Read those Abe Award titles to win!

Our next book club meeting is on November 7th, look for your 7:00 am pass in your advisory on November 5th.
