Wow last month was cool. We made it all the way to the top 60 with less than 40 votes . I noticed a spike in listenership (I think) because of it, so I guess when you get into the higher ranks of Podcast Alley it actually does make a difference . An amazing little surprise greeted me today after I came home from work. What an amazing creation our own Mollie knitted (you'll remember her bit on Darkspeed as the old coffee maker, "your coffee is ready"). I'm absolutely floored at the quality and care that went into this little beauty. Merry Christmas, Mollie, and to everybody else. Thanks so much! You're a doll. (and I don't mean a dink doll). Rather than keeping the beer warm, as you'd almost expect from a mini-beer-sweater, it keeps the beer frosty cold. Cheers!

Okay so I can't be loved by everybody, but.. why not?? Anyway I was saddened to read some negative reviews of the Creek [link removed due to too some mean re-posts on her blog] and I was kinda amazed how much it... sort of... hurt. Not used to all this stuff even now. I ran into this during my monthly (yes now it's monthly... used to be hourly in the beginning) ego-surf using NetNewswire. I don't know why I'm posting this, other than to prove I really am a big baby. Maybe I'll write them all a song and try to win their hearts. Or maybe that will make it worse...

One way I'm going to temporarily combat the service outage due to heavy downloads is to only host a few shows at a time on the website. It's only temporary until I find a good host (dreamhost any thoughts?) and then I'll maybe put the shows back up. I may also simply offer them all on a DVD. Signed and everything! How'd that be?

Had a big catastrophe with my new iMac. The hard drive died, and I lost a lot of data. I just got the website back, it's not exactly back to normal yet, but close enough. Special thanks to everybody who participated in this week's show. Namely, Graeme, Big Jake, Brenda Dayne, Bruce Murray, Katherine, Marvin Suicide, Mollie, Scott Fletcher, The Scarborough Dude, Gary, Oliver, and Rosie. Also a very BIG thanks to the Amazing Mr. Zeeche , (who I forgot to credit at the end) for the song "Lieutenant", which I very rudely asked for one day when I was planning out the show in my mind. Zeech, you rock. Thanks so much.

This show was assembled in one day (about 14 hours), with the contributions of all the people above who sent MP3 files, mostly unscripted, but some were given a few hints about where the show was going. As usual, it all fit together amazingly well, with a few things almost miraculously so (for example, Bruce Murray - Buddy- had no idea there would be a talking coffee machine, and Rosie - Dr. Beaver - didn't know my cousin Oliver would be asking directions to the bar) Weird stuff.

All music in this show (except Zeech's tune) was created here, and soon will be available on our music site. Click "the music" button on the right in a couple of days when I have time to post it.

Fruity Loops... disaster. So as I'm about to head off on my trip to BC we won't be doing a show this week either. Sorry 'bout that. Anyway, my buddy was quite upset about it as he had a lot to say in this episode that meant a lot to him. Send your sympathy emails to Gary and let him know what a dink he is. Just Dave this week as Gary almost gets baked alive in his basement today. (no air conditioning down there) So this week we talk about Marmite, Vegemite, Mojitos, Coronation Street, and Superman. All this and some great new music from Zeeche and from Dave in this Super new episode. Great Scott! Come on in. Thanks to VealChart (and his 5 year old son for the great joke), the incredible Zeeche, and to Jannett for the great recipe. Speaking of which, here it is: (let her know if you enjoy it!)

Traditional Cuban Mojito

1/2 cup of sugar
1 sprig of fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup of freshly squeezed lime juice
3/4 cup of white rum (cuban preferred)
Crushed ice
Seltzer water

1. Thoroughly crush the mint leaves into the sugar. The crushing releases the mint oils and adds to the flavor. Take your time on this step. It'll make a difference in your drink.

2. Add the lime juice and the rum. Mix until the sugar is mostly dissolved. This is your "drink base".

3. Fill a glass with crushed ice. Add your drink base about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way up the glass. Can change this to suit your taste. You'll need to experiment a bit with this.

4. Fill the glass up with the seltzer water.

5. mix thoroughly and enjoy!

I haven't even listened to this yet. That's how late we've been working on this. I'm going to have faith and just post it and hope for the best. This also means (because I haven't heard Gary's half) I can't speak intelligently about the show, so instead I've asked Syne Mitchell (novelist and host of WeaveCast) to write the show notes, using the most popular search terms in the world, which will also serve to piss off the whole planet trying to find important information but getting Chub Creek Episode 56 instead, har har. Yeah it's weird. But if you go to Yahoo's podcast website and click on "comedy" you'll find us as the number two podcast at the time of this writing. What I find strange is that we don't ever seem to be featured on the front page. That would be cool. Anyway, if you feel like it, we'd appreciate your adding a review on the site and maybe that's what would help us get featured there. Anyway, neato, huh. Also I've noticed that Frappr now offers a chat window on the map page. You can check it out here. I'd also love to someday have us features on the iTunes podcasts pages somewhere. Speaking of baked, Dave shares his total lack of culinary skills and, well, asks for HELP! There are only so many ways to enjoy Basa fillets. Thanks to Ted Riecken from Island Podcasting for his cool skit at the beginning, and to Marvin Suicide for all the things he's sent over the past year, some of which I've rehashed. This week we have a fantastic new song from Zeeche. A serious song! Wow! Also a new episode of Dark Speed, and a lot of blathering about nothing in particular. Yes, if you listen closely, you'll hear the funniest verbal slip I've ever made or heard... and I didn't even notice it at the time!!! Episode 48 is choc-a-block with talking, music, and skits. First the talking, then the music, then the skits. Sometimes this gets mixed around. Keeps you guessing. Please give me some feedback on "Crazy Cop" which debuts here (and may never show up again depending on the reaction) it's really really strange. Also, I didn't get very many submissions (only two!) for Dark Speed, so that will die a hyper space death unless there is some interest. If I could still think I'd put something witty here that rhymes with don't be a dink.

Garageband Make Me Mad!

Just bought the new iLife application update from Apple. I was, among other things, looking forward to using the new incarnation of Garageband, which, I think, is called Garageband '06. I installed it, opened it up to have a look, tried a new button that helps you put photos in your podcast and poof. It crashed. I'm not impressed. How the crap am I supposed to assemble new Chub Creek episodes without my lovely Garageband? I tried it a few more times and it crashed each time. I'm thinking it may be one of three things: 1. It's just not fully baked 2. All my custom instruments I downloaded from the web are screwing it up, or 3. My iPhoto library needs to finish updating first. iPhoto is another of the programs that is upgraded in iLife '06 and it has to scan through your photo database and make it up to scratch for the new version. Garageband needs to access your iPhoto library so it can use the photos for podcasts. This may be the key. I'm betting and hoping that's the issue, and I'll keep you posted.

Chub Creek 43 - Don't freeze the iRiver or the Gerbils

This was a fun episode. Many thanks to those who contributed, I'll list you at the bottom of this paragraph. We begin in a foggy, wintry morning in Sudbury as Gary deals with some Van troubles and a frozen music player. Gary declares his love for an old guy from Scarborough and serenades him to boot. Later we find out the mechanical bill and learn of some of the nightmare parents can go through with teenagers. Just before Dave's half Gary gets himself arrested and Dave has to bail him out. What are friends for? Sing along with us as we break out an old favourite (or maybe an oldie you wish you never had to hear again) and listen as dave drives all over town while reading his emails. We finally remember to thank some very important people and finally find out what ever happened to our old pal Mr. Zeeche, and we find out why Dave spends about twenty minues apologizing to Zeeche's girlfriend! Well this one sucks. Not the podcast, but what Dave spends an eternity talking about. Computer problems be darned! We're like a combination of the post office and the Energizer Bunny. We just keep delivering and delivering and delivering. Neither rain nor sleet nor goddamn Apple computer hardware problems (read previous post) are going to keep us from putting out, baby. It's your weekly dose of nonsense. A new and exciting edition of Hot Under the Collar with Brenda Dayne of the Cast-On Podcast (a podcast for knitters) graces the virtual pages of this show, along with a very kind shout-out from the Otaku Generation podcast . Thanks guys... uh, we think. Gary must have been quite a sight to see, driving around Sudbury with his iRiver, because what he actually delivered almost caused a divorce. New music is (as usual) in this episode is all available on the Podsafe Music Network , and there are three nice ones today. Also thanks to Michael Butler of the Rock and Roll Geek Show for his most excellent show ID that we love to play over and over, and to Mark of Mark's Podshow for being such a great sport and singing along with our favourite tune about Gary. Okay I bragged about Apple too much. Right now I'm using my machine with nervous fear that it will suddenly shut off. It's been doing that for a few days now, more and more frequently to the point where I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem. I do know that my model of iMac has a power supply warning from Apple and that it's included under warranty if that's the issue. My IT friend at work has suggested a few things such as zapping the PRAM which I've now done and my fingers are crossed. It's still alive for now, but I'm typing this just in case, because there will be a conspicuous absence of Chub Creek episodes until I solve this. So if you don't hear from us in a while (I can't even blog without this machine) it's because my beautiful iMac is in the shop until further notice.

I hope you all understand, and if you have any suggestions for me, please email me at stupidmacproblems@chubcreek.com and I'd appreciate it. I'll have internet access on my little iBook, but no podcasting capability. If I could only figure out how to port all this iBlog stuff over to the laptop it would be a start. Well it hasn't shut off suddenly on me yet... wish me luck..

Thanks Todd (from Quirky Nomads) for the excellent advice on how to get the archives of Chub Creek available and on line once again. Just for you I've gone to the considerable trouble of uploading about a gigabyte of data to a nice, lovely, safe and most importantly, free location. Not sure how this all works or how exactly one can do this for free, but I'm not asking too many more questions. So feel free to download all the old stuff if you like. I believe the quality may have suffered minutely, as I seemed to notice little clicks like dust on a record in there from time to time. But I may be imagining things. Let me know how this works for you and if the download speed is any good. I'm leaving our more current episodes on the .Mac server though, because I think it's faster and I know I can count on it. Enjoy! Oh, and did I mention the considerable trouble it took to do this? Did I also mention that big, shiny "buy a dink a beer" button? Oh. Okay I thought so. Just kidding. Not really. Yes I am. Lordy lordy it sure is, or was forty. Gary gets so disgusted about his half of the previous version of this episode, after he throws up, he immediately returns to the Chub Creek Studio. So what does this all mean? You great folks get to listen to yet another version of Episode forty from the dinks! Gary gets pretty serious about his recording setup and how important it is that our fans are looked after. From way up north to the city of Toronto, the dinks extinguished this fiery disaster. Plus, as an extra bonus, Dave takes us to the mall where he is attacked by fans and is unable to buy guitar picks, AND ends up in a fist fight with an electronic salesman. Finally the Dinkle Bell is rang... rung? ringed? Dinked. If you felt any danger Chub Creek was getting too serious, this episode should serve to make you feel much safer. Or maybe not. Depends how you look at it. In this episode we start off with by ripping off our own show (see episode 9 which, unfortunately, is archived now, so you'll have to search your library or bribe the dinks to send you a copy) as Dave and Gary fend off huge throngs of fans. Then we join Gary as he is joyously enthusiastic about Christmas and his lack of anymore shopping to do. In fact Gary is joyous about pretty well everything, including his liberal beer imbibing. Gary rocks out with an excellent remake of an older song of his, and then does it again in a more instrumental vein. Then we go for a walk in the fresh snow with just about every character to cross paths with Dave and Gary, including some who may have been better off forgotten. In Dave's half of the show we learn some of the touching history of the Dave and Gary nonsense, including a dig through the archives for some never before heard oldies from pre-Chub days. More instrumental music from Dave, then finally the long awaited Christmas tune contributed to by all of you. YOU GUYS ROCK. Thanks so much for putting yourselves out on a limb with us. In this episode, Gary takes us on a magical journey through Scroogeville while getting stuck in traffic on the way there because of all the shoppers, then finally we make it back to the North Pole and find our Christmas Spirit again. This is a very special episode featuring our first attempt at an audience-participation, musical extravaganza. Okay it's not that interesting, but for some it might be. Once you've listened to the show, download the song "Dinkle Bells " and then add your own crazy Christmas (or other) verses to the song. Email it back to us, and we'll splice all the entries together and play it on the next Chub Creek and if it's any good we'll release it on the Podsafe Music Network with a credit for everybody who wants one right in the song tag. Let's Go! If you have an allergy to Dave's singing you might want to give this one a miss. But if not, this is the episode for you! Dave gets whiny and probably puts his foot in his mouth about four times complaining about Madge and Adam Curry while discovering several fixes to a couple of Apple problems that have been really bothering him. Dave mentions more people who have become members of our our Frappr! map and rehashes still more embarrassing old songs. Then we go off to the Northern Chub Creek studio where Gary does a cool, but brief sound-seeing tour of his daughter's adventures with toast, and addresses some of the difficulty of being in a northern city in winter time, including his love for a certain variety of underwear. Who is the Scarborough Dude? Why, he's the host of Dicks 'n Janes; one of Dave's favourite podcasts and a must listen. In this episode we rehash an older song that is rocketing up the PMN charts (okay maybe not quite) and then we get in the car and go for a soundseeing tour to Scarborough to visit with fellow podcaster SD (scarborough Dude) Complete with a light dusting of more original and very stupid music by Dave, this is a trip made even more interesting by the amazing quality of those binaural microphones stuck in Dave's ears. Then we teleport to Sudbury and join Gary as he shows us both his freakazoid side and his serious one as he segues into a remarkable piece of writing, and several amazing new songs in which Gary created his own loops using the new software he's experimenting with. Another musical extravaganza... yeah. Four, count 'em, four songs in this episode, including one we invest some extra special care and love with. In this episode Dave recounts a surprise visit he had during the weekend and the adventures that ensued. Then we learn some new words in Dutch thanks to our new segment complete with its own theme song. Lots of fantastic stereo soundseeing with both Dave and Gary, and his brother Ken. Gary recounts his version of the events and a heartbreaking lost bit of Chub Creek history, and outdoes himself with some amazing new music. Sorry about the tardocity. This is an episode of introspection, reflection, interrogation, prostitution, and revolution. Well not really, but that would be cool if I could think of some more "tion" words that were relevant. Listen to Dave whine about the tin foil followed by a special message from a major world leader. More microphone woes, and some more whining. The nicotine problems are still affecting our moods it seems. Dave gets introspective about the moderate use of our music on the Podsafe Music Network . By the beard of Thoth, it's time for the thirtieth episode of your beloved Chub Creek. Wow time flies, doesn't it. Let's hear Gary learn about how weird he gets when he's trying to quit smoking. Also hear about Gary's newest inspiration and hear some excellent songs, and we can all finally hear the real story about Gary's lump and what really happened at the doctor's office when the doctor wanted more than Gary was prepared to give. Dave finds himself very tired and explains what happens during those times (such as this when it's three o'clock in the morning and he's trying to type show notes) and what happens in the morning when he's supposed to be awake. It's a 47 minute ball of fun that's over before you can blink, so come on in. Don't be a dink.

Gary really seems to be in his groove on this one. Two amazing songs and some storytelling mark this episode, along with some most excellent iRiver created sound effects. Listen as Gary tells us how he's just about had enough of listener slackership, and tells a road rage story to beat all road rage stories. Dave takes us for a trip to the antique shop and then goes riding on the range. Dave throws in his own two cents worth on the slacker listener issue and even dabbles into the subject of passive television culture. Hey I'm just realizing nobody sent me any Spanish. I'm still awaiting my audio clip of "give me an ash tray and a beer." Come on, spanish speaking listener slackers! Thanks. A major announcement. This time Chub Creek's bringing more to the table than anybody likely wants to eat. But it's there, all 46 minutes of it. Listen to Gary reveal a deep, dark secret about Dave in a very elaborate series of skits and a sound whining tour. Are the rumours true? Gary plays a new song with the strangest lyrics ever written by somebody not under the influence of magic mushrooms or PCPs. Gary gets physical with his washer and reveals some serious dangers involved in walking down the stairs at his house. Dave gets his own back and talks about some amazing new secrets of Garageband in a language closely resembling English. If you found that Chub Creek 25 sounded an awful lot like Chub Creek 24 that's because I'm an idiot. I've fixed the problem now, but even worse, when you delete the old Chub Creek 25 from iTunes it seems awfully hard to get the corrected one. So if you're having this problem, please try unsubscribing to Chub Creek, then re-subscribing. Thanks, and sorry.
