More than a store

The Plus Bus began in 2015 as a clothing swap based around the idea that bigger people deserved better options. From there, it grew into something much bigger: a mobile boutique, a warehouse space, and eventually a brick-and-mortar shop. The Plus Bus became a destination where fat folks felt seen, welcomed, and understood. It was a rare place where your size didn’t define your worth, and you were celebrated for who you are. Unfortunately, spaces like this are few and far between.

Time for a change

In her announcement, Marcy shared that it’s time to step away, writing that she needs to “have grace” with herself and “stop fighting the current.” She doesn’t point to a single reason for the closure, but more of an accumulation of the challenges that come with running a business, especially one built around retail plus-size fashion.

Marcy also made a point to highlight other L.A.-area shops doing the work: Querves Boutique in Burbank, Mumu Mansion in Mid-City, and Hannah’s Hefty Hideaway, among others.

The Chubstr connection

Back in 2017, we were filming Sized Up, Chubstr’s first original series. That show took viewers to five cities around the country to shop for big & tall clothing at places off the beaten path. No chain retailers or department stores, just hidden gems you probably didn’t know about. The Plus Bus was one of our first stops.

In episode one, actor Daniel Franzese and I went to The Plus Bus to peruse the men’s plus-size section. As you can see in the video above, I ended up in a very unique outfit. We spent the afternoon shooting there, and it was one of the highlights of filming that series for me.

The Plus Bus also hosted Chubstr’s 6th anniversary party, something I’m still grateful for. If you needed proof of the community Marcy and her team built, that was it. Chubstr readers, reps from big & tall brands, plus-size influencers, designers, and even people in the entertainment industry showed up, filling the space and celebrating together.

Is there a future for The Plus Bus?

There’s a chance we could see The Plus Bus continue in some form as an exclusively online venture. “There are lots of questions about the future of The Plus Bus and if I will be selling online… the answer is that I am not sure,” she says in a post earlier this week.

Regardless of what whether The Plus Bus continues, Marcy will still be part of the community. “I want you to know that I’m not leaving you; I am simply changing directions.” Stop by The Plus Bus at 3125 Glendale Blvd in Los Angeles one last time this weekend, April 25–26 from 11–6, before the store closes for good.

Our brand is all about inclusivity, so it was important for me to design pieces for everyone to kick off the summer in style.

Why Megan & Walmart?

For Megan Thee Stallion, partnering with Walmart was personal. She’s talked about growing up shopping there and calls the collaboration a full-circle moment. What FatFabFree will offer users

FatFabFree is being built as a searchable directory of real-world spaces, powered in part by the community. Hooker says the directory will include:

• Searchable listings of providers and locations
• Standardized accessibility questions, so information is consistent
• Moderated community input
• Clear indicators that display the safety, fit, and comfort of a space

Right now, it takes a lot of extra legwork to find this kind of information. You have to dig through photos, read through (sometimes irrelevant) reviews, or just take a chance and hope for the best. If FatFabFree goes as planned, users will be able to quickly and easily scan a listing to see whether a space will accommodate them.

Most importantly, the resource will be free for users, with plans to operate as a nonprofit to ensure access isn’t limited.

Solving a big problem

Most spaces aren’t made for bigger bodies. Whether it’s squeezing into a seat at a concert, trying to fit into a tight restaurant booth, or having to buy a second airplane seat, it’s a familiar experience for a lot of us. As Hooker explains, navigating public spaces requires a lot of calculation – so much sometimes, that we just skip events because the risk of discomfort is too high.

When we take that chance, and things don’t work out, there can be physical, emotional, or financial impacts. FatFabFree wants to change that by turning real experiences into usable data to help drive change and accountability across industries.

Who is Suzy Hooker?

Suzy Hooker is a creator and advocate whose work sits at the intersection of art, body autonomy, and activism. She’s also the co-creator and co-host of Thunder Thighs and Bedroom Eyes, a podcast that blends conversations around fat justice, sex, and life in larger bodies. The show reflects the same ethos that seems to drive the rest of her work: people in larger bodies deserve dignity, respect, and full participation in every part of life.

Packing for the trip

This was a quick work trip, so I didn’t need to bring a ton of clothes. I packed a few shirts, jeans, a pair of shorts, plus all the usual essentials. The Dallas-based singer-songwriter has announced Ain’t Dead Yet, his sixth studio album and the final part of what he’s called his cancer recovery trilogy. It drops May 29 via East Dallas/Thirty Tigers, and given everything Walker has been through, the title couldn’t be more fitting.

In late 2023, he revealed his colon cancer diagnosis to fans, and by late 2024, the news was grim: new growths in both lungs, a likely restaging to stage 4, a biopsy, and radiation. Throughout it all, Walker kept writing and recording. The stage 4 diagnosis ultimately proved to be incorrect; the cancer hadn’t spread, and the treatment worked. Walker has been open about the fact that recovery is ongoing, with lasting physical effects and the reality of regular monitoring. He’s cancer-free, but he’s not quite “better.” It sounds like that complicated truth is reflected in the new album.

Ain’t Dead Yet is the third album in a trilogy that also includes Tropicana and Stuff, written during his treatment and recovery. Of the three, this one has an unusual origin: Walker started these songs before he knew he was sick.

“All my songs are about parts of me. I just didn’t try to paste them onto a fictional character this time.”

“That whole year I just felt awful and like I was dying,” he said. “I didn’t feel right, and mentally I was off, like there really was something wrong the whole time. So I think the reason some of these songs feel the way they do is because I felt that way, even though I didn’t know something was wrong yet.”

The album was recorded before, during, and after treatment, including three songs tracked the day before a lung surgery that posed a real risk to his voice. Faced with the possibility of losing the instrument that defines him, he sang anyway.

The lead single, “Capital Letters,” hints at the album’s sonic direction. It’s closer to Walker’s earlier country rock than the sun-bleached Tropicana or the indie-leaning Stuff. Lyrically, it’s a tribute to two people who helped shape him: his grandfather (the subject of “Fondly” from his 2019 debut Wish You Were Here) and Trey Johnson, co-founder of State Fair Records. Both are gone. The song is how Walker keeps them close.

The album marks a shift in Walker’s writing. He built his reputation on character-driven storytelling, portraits of people who weren’t quite him but held pieces of him. Ain’t Dead Yet covers a lot of ground thematically: mortality, legacy, the strange gift of surviving something that could have ended your life. The title track sets the tone early on, defiant, a little bitter, and clear-eyed about the cost of still being here.

We first covered Walker back in 2023 when he performed a cover of Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in support of What Is It Even?, his covers album featuring songs exclusively from female artists. He’s always been a singular presence, a big guy with long hair and an unabashedly flamboyant style, making deeply personal country music on his own terms. That hasn’t changed. If anything, surviving cancer made him more himself.

Alesbury is one of Stitch Fix’s private label brands. You’ll find clothing in this line has that timeless style that is always in, and a generous fit. The Washed Heavyweight Long-Sleeve Crew has a lived-in feel that you’ll appreciate. I found it a little long for my 5’8 “frame, so I tucked it in. Like the jeans, I probably could have gone a size down (I prefer my clothes more form-fitting), but your results may vary.

The North Face Clyffe Mid Insulated Boot

Although I’ve lived in the Pacific Northwest for over a decade, these boots were my first experience with anything from The North Face. The Clyffe Mid Insulated Boot is snug without being too tight, which is good for feet as wide as mine. The boots stay cool on the trail, and, as advertised, they keep your feet from getting soaked. I expect to get a lot of use out of them this spring.

Katin OTG Yukon Puffer Coat

Generally, I’m not a fan of puffer coats, but this one from Katin doesn’t have as much fluff in it as others on the market, and I’m a big fan of the color. The coat isn’t too heavy and is great for layering over a button-down, or in my case, a long-sleeve tee.

Roark Fisherman Beanie

When you have to cover a huge head, you need the right hat. This classic beanie from Roark was the perfect way to finish my look. The beanie is part of the official uniform of the PNW, so get yourself a good one like this.
