• After 84 days in space, the crew of Skylab 4, the last crew to visit American space station Skylab, returns to Earth on this date in 1974.
• And 16 years ago today – The massive Internet collaboration “24 Hours in Cyberspace” takes place.

• It was on this date in 1535 that Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro founded Lima, the capital of Peru.
• That same date in 1778, James Cook becomes the first known European to discover the Hawaiian Islands, which he names the “Sandwich Islands”.
• It was also today in 1788 that the first elements of the First Fleet carrying 736 convicts from England to Australia arrives at Botany Bay. (Yes, I put this in just for the Star Trek reference)
• 1884 – Dr. William Price attempts to cremate the body of his infant son, Jesus Christ Price, setting a legal precedent for cremation in the United Kingdom.
• The X-ray machine is exhibited for the first time on this date in 1896
• President Theodore Roosevelt sends a radio message to King Edward VII: the first transatlantic radio transmission originating in the United States on January 18, 1911
• Also on that same date – Eugene B. Ely lands on the deck of the USS Pennsylvania stationed in San Francisco harbor, in the first time an aircraft landed on a ship.
• A 611 gram chondrite type meteorite strikes a house near the village of Baxter in Stone County, Missouri today in 1916.
• Today in 1919, Bentley Motors Limited is founded.
• Scientists identify a previously unknown bacterium as the cause of the mysterious Legionnaires’ disease on this date in 1977.
• And just 15 years ago, 1997, Boerge Ousland of Norway becomes the first person to cross Antarctica alone and unaided.
• The Tagish Lake meteorite impacts the Earth today in 2000
• Seven years ago, the Airbus A380, the world’s largest commercial jet, is unveiled at a ceremony in Toulouse, France

“I used to turn my phone completely off when they would tell you to, until the power button stopped working on my Nexus 1 so now I just put it in Airplane mode.  Usually I need my phone when I land and I can’t always get to my power cable to trick the phone into turning on right away.  Once I get a phone with a working power button I will probably go back to turning off my phone. -Amber I know the voices aren’t real, but they come up with some really great ideas.”

• Dec 7, 1930 – 1930! W1XAV in Boston, Massachusetts broadcasts video from the CBS radio orchestra program, The Fox Trappers. The broadcast also includes the first television commercial in the United States, an advertisement for I.J. Fox Furriers, who sponsored the radio show.
• We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Dec 7, 1941 – The Imperial Japanese Navy attacks the United States Pacific Fleet and its defending Army Air Forces and Marine air forces at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, causing a declaration of war upon Japan by the United States.
• Instant replay is used for the first time in an Army-Navy game by its inventor, director, Tony Verna today in 1963
• that same day in 1972 – Apollo 17, the last Apollo moon mission, is launched. The crew takes the photograph known as The Blue Marble as they leave the Earth.
• The Galileo spacecraft arrives at Jupiter, today in 1995, a little more than six years after it was launched by Space Shuttle Atlantis during Mission STS-34.

Unfortunately, it and the old copies of Computer Shopper from the ’80′s (some of which were up to 800 pages +) were destroyed when the roof sprung a leak at the parents house in Florida because the apartment where the ex and I were living in at the time didn’t have room for me to store them. A lot of those old computer magazines were fun reads, especially when they tried to compare all the old computers you could buy or build from companies such as Commodore, Radio Shack, Texas Instruments, Sega, ActiVision, and other computer makers who have faded into the sands of time, along with the parts for building your own IBM PC-XT and AT.”

• It was also on November 9, 1967 that NASA launches the unmanned Apollo 4 test spacecraft atop the first Saturn V rocket from Cape Kennedy, Florida.
• First issue of Rolling Stone Magazine is published today in 1967
• and today in 1979 saw a Nuclear false alarm when the NORAD computers and the Alternate National Military Command Center in Fort Ritchie, Maryland detected purported massive Soviet nuclear strike. After reviewing the raw data from satellites and checking the early warning radars, the alert is cancelled.
• November 9, 1985 at the age of 22, Garry Kasparov, of the Soviet Union becomes the youngest World Chess Champion by beating Anatoly Karpov, also of the Soviet Union.
• The chemical element Darmstadtium is discovered on this date in 1994

• In the United States, KDKA of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania starts broadcasting as the first commercial radio station on this date in 1920. The first broadcast is the result of the 1920 U.S. presidential election.
• Today in  1936 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is established.
• The British Broadcasting Corporation initiates the BBC Television Service, the world’s first regular, “high-definition” service today in 1936. Back then, “high definition” was defined as at least 200 lines. The service was renamed BBC1 in1964, the channel still runs to this day.
• This is the date in 1947 that designer Howard Hughes performs the maiden (and only) flight of the H-4 The Hercules aka the “Spruce Goose”; the largest fixed-wing aircraft ever built.
• The first internet-distributed computer worm, The Morris Worm, to gain significant mainstream media attention, is launched from MIT today in 1988.
