[UPDATE] as these HTML5 video tag posts are somewhat just running experiments, problems are expected to arise. It turns out that iOS mobile devices don't want to play them automatically, and I assume that is the same for Android devices. In the future, they will make it so that HTML5 videos play everywhere, on every device, and appear as they should be, but we'll all be dead by then. So that's the future that's ahead of us.

Colour Gamut of July's Tumblr Entries

The image above is an array of averaged colours for each of the one hundred picture entries in my Tumblr last month. I like looking at people's archives to get a feel for their interests. I noticed that a lot look the same, in terms of colour pallets. A particular fondness for light pastel colours, and washed out images is regular throughout.

The technique I used isn't particularly useful for discerning perceptive reasons for individual posts, of course. It's like mixing a box of paints together and saying the result is the colour of an interesting painting. For instance, the appeal for the striking, acerbic, yellow in the "I love Chechnya" t-shirt [tumblr] is lost when the average becomes a putrid tan colour. And it speaks nothing of the metaphysical reasons for an entry. However, when seen in an array of chronological averages, an impression of the level of variety in a user's content is easier to comprehend.

Here is a collection of odds and ends from the institution that is, Joe Duffy and his Liveline radio show (2010/11):

1) "The hope that is Brian Lenihan". Brian Lenihan, a minister for finance who, while suffering from terminal cancer, made deals that put Ireland into financial bondage for the next 60+ years. I believe that's the very definition of "hope" that you'll find in all modern dictionaries.

3) Man of the people, Joe, mimics the sound that "D4 liberals" make when talking about abhorrent censorship.

4) Joe takes drugs. very seriously, and would never throw out flippant metaphors about children being off their heads on their Communion day. So that can't be what you're hearing.

5) Gambling is "only a bit of fun", it's not like taking drugs or anything. You never see people fall off the wagon because of gambling. Joe is very level headed and sensible: "Betting isn't a problem, abusive betting [is a problem]". People in the cheap seats might suggest replacing "betting" with "drug taking" to highlight a certain (high) level of hypocrisy, but that would be stupid, and probably a case of cyber bullying.

6) Joe gives "Mr. [Paul] Gogarty", a piece of his mind. How dare Mr. Gogarty say: "but I love you Joe".

7) A succinct and precise apology is made to "Mr. Gogarty". Because RTÉ is state-run media, Joe was most likely advised that he should quickly and most humbly apologise to Mr. Gogarty, as Mr. Gogarty was a member of the Irish government, and shit would hit the fan if it was left unsettled.

Testing Vimeo's "loop" Feature

The loop should be seamless, most of the time anyway. In previous testing, I have seen a black frame appear between loops, which seems to be a rare problem, but suffered commonly. It's a real pity Vimeo only offer the ability to remove the playback interface with Pro accounts. I think they would have a killer feature if they opened it to free users too (even if just for short clips). It would be another thing that sets them apart, and it would help in the battle against GIFs.

The size of this video is 479KB. The GIF version is 23.9MB.

Interestingly, this one seems so short that the controls never goes away.

Even more interestingly, this one seems just the right length so that control interface doesn't reappear.

After 41 years of service, Pat Kenny is leaving Irish state-media broadcaster, RTÉ, in favour of a stint in the privately owned radio channel, NewsTalk. There hasn't been a shakeup like this in RTÉ since Gerry Ryan blew a heart ventricle in 2010.

Kenny has said that he wanted to change for a bit of excitement, and to do before it was too late [youtube]. Some have suggested that a drastic reduction in his salary at RTÉ is to blame. I suspect something far more sinister about the move by Kenny, something that goes beyond mere monetary value, but I will keep these thoughts to myself, until the third moon rises in the fifth equinox, and the Liffy runs red with the blood of 50 thousand albino virgins.

Let me explain. I was reading this [sannerud.com], after completing this [riemannscut], and I was struck by a quote from it (above). I very nearly Tweeted the quote, in fact. I had it written and was about to hit the "Tweet" button, when I felt the need to go to the toilet. I decided to think it over until after my urination session.

Mid-Stream, I looked to my left and saw a red t-shirt I was hand washing in the sink. I noticed the colour of the water [My urine looked like pink lemonade.], and I eyed the t-shirt itself [Then I passed a clot.]. "That's fucking wonderful" I thought to myself. "I can't even take a piss now without the internet taking over."

Upon returning to my computer, I deleted the Tweet, and composed this blogpost instead.
