Ministry Portfolio 2014

Summary: We are seeking a new rector to serve God and his people at Church of the Ascension in Rochester, New York. We are a parish in the northern [10^th Ward] section of Rochester. We are located in an urban residential area, only two blocks from Eastman Business Park. The Maplewood neighborhood grew mostly to accommodate the large population employed by Eastman Kodak Company and has changed as times have changed. We currently have about 150 members. Average Sunday attendance in 2013 was 50. We are blessed with a parking area and easy access via Route 104. So while, located in the city, many parishioners drive in from neighboring suburbs. We see potential for growth both as a neighborhood church and from suburbanites who may come to value our and programs, missions and services. We seek a rector who will work with us and provide leadership in liturgical and pastoral functions of the church. We also want to continue to develop as faithful disciples, collaborate with others who share our values and missions.

Introduction, Background and History: The story of Church of the Ascension begins in 1886 when it was a fledgling congregation meeting for worship, fellowship and planning for the future in homes. In 1888, a first church building was completed, a small brownstone structure on Burke Terrace. At that time, records indicate 20 families and 100 children as members. We were incorporated as Church of the Ascension in 1908. Ground was broken for the current building was constructed on Ascension Day, 1929. After World War II, Ascension and most churches in the area grew rapidly as it served the needs of the community. In the 1960’s an office, church school addition was made to the church. In the 1970’s to 2000’s, Ascension, along with many other churches in the Northeast was challenged with fewer members and erosion of budgets. We have adapted to these challenges and see the potential for growth. In 2011 with both Mission and Congregational Development support from the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester we made some important steps in maintaining our position as a ‘Beacon of Light’ on the corner of Lake and Riverside.

Ministry Portfolio: Worship and Planning for Future Mission

Our worship is primarily Sunday mornings. There have been several recent instances of fulfillment in worship over the past several months, some highlights:

November 3, 2013 was a highlight as there were three persons baptized at our 10:00AM All Saints service; a baby born to one of our immigrant families, a mother and daughter of a parish members extended family who came in from Toronto.
Christmas Eve service 2013 was filled with music, candlelight and joy.
December 8, 2013 was a special service where we intentionally and fully involved parish members in work our Vestry had done with Rev. Hopkins, our transition minister, during the fall to understand and document Ascension’s Values.
Confirmation and Reception Service on Mothers’ Day, May 11, 2014. Bishop Prince Singh and Rev. Sandy Cordingley lead a service with seven confirmands and their families.

We have taken time to prepare, plan and come to common understanding of our values. In 2013, the vestry, and others in the parish worked through a formal visioning exercise to identify our strengths and opportunities. That helped us understand future directions for our parish. That Mission Statement is:

Come journey – from Togetherness to Godliness, from Welcome to Wonder, in God’s Love and Service. Growing through: Fellowship, Education, Collaboration, & Imagination.

Our Liturgical Practices

We fully enjoy Rite II liturgy, currently Sundays at 8AM and 10AM. The 10AM service is music-filled. We have a fine Skinner organ and are pleased to have a good relationship with Eastman School of Music. We seldom have sung Eucharist. Each month there is a ‘family’ service and Children’s Sermon. Twice a month, there is lay-led Evening Prayer. There is an active weekly Bible Study group. We appreciate preaching focused on the Word that includes ‘take-home’ inspiration. We see music as a ministry and have a small choir and are working on a major capital project for installation of Tower Bells.

While not a direct incorporation effort, we encourage others on their faith-journeys in the following ways:

offer personal and direct invitations to individuals to take part in some activity/ministry that might appeal to them.
many who come to Ascension have entered through the kitchen door. We love food and recognize its positive effect on relationships. We hold 5 or 6 community dinners/picnics each year.
We have been working towards true Hospitality towards all, especially our new-American families; refugees from Burma via Thailand, now in Rochester.

Spiritual, emotional and physical well-being are all affected positively by the attitudes of our parishioners. It is an attitude of genuine caring for one-another. There are saints among us who telephone and/or send cards to people we’ve not seen in a while. We were very happy to welcome Very Rev. Michael Hopkins and Rev. Sandy Cordingley as transition clergy and their love has been very helpful to many individuals and it shows on Sundays.

Pastoral care for those beyond our worshipping community:

We have a long history hosting 12-step groups in our building. Currently we host: twice weekly AA meetings, (100 people), weekly NA group (20-30 people), weekly gamblers group (~10 people)
Over 40 years ago, some from Ascension organized a community food cupboard with other neighborhood churches and it is still going strong. It is sited at a Methodist church about a mile from our building.
Our building serves as the home for Greater Rochester Community of Churches, an ecumenical outreach and Rochester Interfaith Jail Ministries which offers programs and educational services. ‘Welcome Home’ gift bags containing personal care items have been provided to recent parolees.

Ascension’s involvement with the wider Church and region:

We remain active in the Diocese of Rochester and have delegates and participants in Stewardship, Fellowship, Youth and other activities. We have hosted Bishop Singh’s Staff Retreat and Retreat Groups from other parishes.
In summer we host a community picnic and share food, games, conversation with our neighbors.
We have a long history in supporting Food for the Poor and World Blanket Appeal and other international needs.

Recent ministries:

· About 4 years ago, some people from Ascension recognized a need and (with a small seed grant) started a ministry to provide cleaning supplies and personal care supplies to neighbors in need. The Care Closet Ministry has grown and serves 100-140 people per month with these items not covered by Food Stamp or other programs.

· We recognize opportunity to become involved with partners to expand our impact. We continue to work with the Catholic Cathedral community on summer youth programs.

· We have reached-out to a local charter school, University Prep, to provide overflow parking and shelter to allow them to meet building codes. Future collaboration and ministries are being considered.

· We looked at the possibility of providing space for a day-care center during the week, but were thwarted by building code requirements.

Stewardship:

We Thank God Always for all the Blessings we have received. We have many people contributing time, talent and treasure because of that. There is a true commitment that many feel towards this church. We are not afraid of the word – Tithe. In 2014, we had a good increase in pledges. We are fortunate to have had responsible trustees on our Vestry who have proven to be wise and careful to keep our assets stable and growing.

Conflict or Collaborative Change

The end of 2012 and start of 2013 was a time of conflict at Ascension. Rather than re-tell the story of that conflict, we will identify how we addressed it:

Name the conflict – Divided Church
Seek help from qualified advisors – In consultation with our Bishop and members of his staff we entered a formal conflict resolution process / Mediation with a consultant who quickly saw need for an additional person to help. We put in the time and effort to work through this process.
One of the outcomes of the mediation was confirmation of the need for ‘regular’ governance of the parish during this time and the Annual Election of Vestry and Wardens

Change that does not go well is clearly painful. It is imposed and not accepted.
Change that is welcome is preceded by conversation, building trust and relationships, shared values, shared goals, understanding the conditions, who, what, when, how, etc. and flows well as participation is valued in bringing improvement.
Many of the statements in this Ministry Portfolio flow from our mission and vision workshops in 2013 to assess our values and future directions. It was widely shared in all-parish meetings last fall, after our December 8 service / ‘Deck-the-Halls’ Christmas event, and at our annual parish meeting in January and small group sessions this spring.

We are eager to meet, welcome and work with new clergy who will share our values of welcoming, worshiping, discovery and reaching out to all, within and without our walls, to build a strong, lasting and harmonious community, in keeping with our Mission Statement. Happy New Year 2012, Bishop Singh Visits Sunday

Dear Friends, January 2, 2012

Welcome all. Happy New Year to everyone. Besides being New Years Day, Sunday was the Holy Name Day of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Rev. Pat's sermon she suggested that as a Christian we might consider greeting each other with "God Is With You." She went on to talk about the new year and what we all might look forward to in the new year. Her closing thoughts were that we should go into the New Year "With Him, For Him and By Him." So my greeting to all of you this year is "God Be With You". Please don't forget that next Sunday is the first Sunday after the Epiphany and will be a great day of celebration. The Bishop will be joining us for both services. Following the service Angel is hosting his annual Ascension Christmas Party. If you have never attended this annual event you should be sure to attend this year to enjoy the wonderful food and delightful Santa decorations that Angel works so hard to prepare for us. Following the service and party we will be taking down the sanctuary decorations. Many hands make light work so your help would be greatly appreciated.

BIBLE STUDY: The Ascension Bible Study group continues to meet each Thursday morning at 9 Am in the library. We read and study the Gospel lesson for the coming week. It is a time to reflect on God's message and to expand our knowledge and ministry in Christ. We welcome new participants to add fresh insight to our discussions. If we wish to grow in faith and knowledge, and share our love of God, we need to be able to share the stories of the Bible. Much food for thought and often refreshments to share. The study is of the Gospel Lesson for next Sunday, found below.

We thank Carol Manuel for her talents at the organ this past week. This coming Sunday we welcome John back from his Christmas holiday. If you enjoy singing and would like to become a member of the choir in the coming New Year, please join us at rehearsal on Wed. evenings at 7:30. It is not only a great musical experience, but a wonderful experience of fellowship. On Sunday, Carol played "Twas in the Moon of Wintertime" as the prelude. Also called "The Huron Carol", this is a favorite of mine so I thought you might enjoy it. It is said to be the oldest Canadian Carol written in 1643 by Jean de Brebeuf, a Jesuit missionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Canada. Brébeuf wrote the lyrics in the native language of the Huron/Wendat people and the melody is based on a traditional French folk song. The English version of the hymn uses imagery familiar in the early 20th century, in place of the traditional Nativity story. This version is derived from Brebeuf's original song and Huron religious concepts. In the English version, Jesus is born in a "lodge of broken bark", and wrapped in a "robe of rabbit skin". He is surrounded by hunters instead of shepherds, and the Magi are portrayed as "chiefs from afar" that bring him "fox and beaver pelts" instead of the more familiar gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The hymn also uses a traditional Algonquian name, Gitchi Manitou, for God. The original lyrics are now sometimes modified to use imagery accessible to Christians who are not familiar with Native-Canadian cultures. My sister-in-law is from Thailand. She is also an excellent cook and prepares outstanding Oriental fare. For our Christmas celebration she made Lettuce Wraps. They do take a bit of time to prepare, but are well worth it. They are technically an appetizer, but I can make a meal out of them.
LETTUCE WRAPS
Ingredients
6 OZ. boneless chicken breast, finely chopped
1 T. vegetable oil
1/2 cu. water chestnuts, drained and finely diced
1/2 cu. Shitake Mushrooms, finely diced
1 cu. white mushrooms, finely diced
1/4 cu. green onion (green part only), finely diced
1 tsp. minced garlic
3 T. Terijaki Sauce
2 T. dark brown sugar
1 tsp. rice wine vinegar
1 drop liquid smoke
1/2 tsp. sesame oil
1/2 tsp Hoisin Sauce
1/2 tsp. oyster sauce
1 head lettuce

DIPPING SAUCE
1/4 CU. Terijaki Sauce
1 T. sweet rice wine vinegar
1 tsp. hot mustard
1 tsp. Chinese Chili Garlic Sauce

Directions
Preheat fry pan. Add vegetable oil then chicken and quickly saute until browned.
Add mushrooms, chestnuts, green onion, garlic and stir fry 1 min.
Add all remaining ingredients and saute 1 min.

Ahead of time, separate lettuce leaves, wash and place in zip lock bags and chill.
This makes the leaves crispy and fresh for wrapping.

Place a spoonful of chicken mixture in a lettuce leaf and top with a bit of Dipping Sauce.
Wrap the lettuce around the mixture and enjoy.

The sauce can be made hotter by adding more mustard. It can be made milder
by adding a bit more rice wine vinegar.

The sauces and rice wine vinegar called for in the recipe can be purchased in the International section of Wegmans.
They preserve well so don't hesitate to purchase them to save to use later.

Remembering All the Saints

Dear Friends, November 7, 2011

Yesterday, many placed photos of loved ones on the altar, in remembrance for All Saints' Day. Rev. Pat, in her sermon, called to mind themes for All Saints' Day and from the Beatitudes, teaching us that we are one in the Spirit of God with our loved ones who have gone on before. Jesus' teachings in the Beatitudes gathered together a vision of Heaven and also what we are to do daily. We are to share His vision of a loving world with all whom we meet.
Come and gather 'round, as scripture comes to life..
You will be lifted up and rewarded.

This is a time for reflection on Jesus’ teachings and how we model our faith to family, friends and all whom we meet. God’s Word guides such a process. Much food for thought and often refreshments to share. The study is of the Gospel Lesson for next Sunday, found below.

Jesus, we never know when you will come again. Help us as we visit those in
prison and jail to remember that we must act every day as though we are to meet you face to face that night. Help us to remember that these are our brothers and sisters and help us to bring them the good news that there is a place for them in your Church and later on in your Heaven. We pray today especially for Step by Step of Rochester as they welcome Margie Mayk back to work.

With autumn providing so much wonderful produce, here is a recipe for a savory Mushroom

Barley Risotto. [We can also make extra for someone.]

Mushroom Barley Risotto
Yield: 4 servings
Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 45 minutes
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup chopped yellow onion
12 ounces cleaned and sliced crimini mushrooms
3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup pearl barley
6 cups vegetable broth
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
½ cup parmesan cheese, shredded
1. Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Saute onion until it starts to brown, about 5 minutes.
2. Add the mushrooms and saute until they have released all of their liquid and are golden brown, about 10 minutes. You can add 1 to 3 tablespoons of water if they start to stick.
3. Stir in the herbs and garlic, then add the barley and stir to coat for 1 minute. Add 4 cups of the broth and bring to a boil over high heat.
4. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid is absorbed. Reduce the heat to medium and add more broth, ½ cup at a time, stirring until each addition is absorbed, until the barley is tender but still slightly firm. You may not use all of the broth, but you will use most of it.
5. Remove the pan from the heat and add the butter and cheese, stirring until incorporated. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Yesterday, Bob Crystal preached and offered insights into our human tendency to be judgmental, as we listen to our inner voice of criticizing others. Bob related his firm conviction that we all have a place in the hereafter; and no one but God in Christ can direct us there, nor can anyone keep us out. So our little voices of criticism need to be redirected to helping others, because God has said "You are IN" - and "What are you going to do about it?"

Come and gather 'round, as scripture comes to life..
You will be lifted up and rewarded.

We never know how ready a friend may be to hear a word of encouragement in faith. We never know when God will bring someone to speak to us, to enrich our own life and the life of that person.

Jesus, we all struggle with wanting respect. Many of those we visit have gotten in trouble because they felt “dissed.” You told us not to strive for recognition from others. Help us to model that for those in jail and prison. Help us to show others how to be truly humble and to be servants, out of love for you; not to obey the law but fulfill it in your name.

Cauliflower Soup, brimming with flavor and memorability!

Cauliflower Soup
from the internet, but personally tested
Ingredients
• 1 stick Butter, Divided
• ½ whole Onion, Finely Diced
• 1 whole Carrot Finely Diced
• 1 stalk Celery, Finely Diced
• 1 whole (to 2 Whole) Cauliflower Heads (roughly Chopped)
• 2 Tablespoons Fresh Or Dried Parsley (chopped)
• 2 quarts Low-sodium Chicken Broth Or Stock
• 6 Tablespoons All-purpose Flour
• 2 cups Whole Milk [or use 2% Milk]
• 1 cup Half-and-half
• 2 teaspoons To 4 Teaspoons Salt, or to taste, as broth is salty
• 1 cup (heaping) Sour Cream [optional and not needed] @ Room Temperature
Preparation Instructions
In a large soup pot or dutch oven, melt 4 tablespoons butter. Add the onion and cook for a few minutes, or until it starts to turn brown.
Add the carrots and celery and cook an additional couple of minutes. Add cauliflower and parsley and stir to combine.
Cover and cook over very low heat for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, pour in chicken stock or broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and allow to simmer.
In a medium saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons butter. Mix the flour with the milk and whisk to combine. Add flour-milk mixture slowly to the butter, whisking constantly.
Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup half-and-half. Add mixture to the simmering soup. Allow to simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Check seasoning and add more salt or pepper if necessary.
Just before serving, place the sour cream in a serving bowl or soup tureen. Add two to three ladles of hot soup into the tureen and stir to combine with the sour cream. Pour in remaining soup and stir.
Serve immediately.

This year our Stewardship theme is "I Believe", and Rev. Pat taught us yesterday that to foster growth we need to love and nurture one another in God's Spirit. As Moses led his people while caring for them, that is what we shall do to share our time and talents and resources, as we grow in stewardship and in walking together into what is now unknown.

and Cornbread. Healthy and nutritious, as the beans and cornbread , even without ham,
offer a complete protein.

[We can also make extra for someone in need of our kindness.]

Jessica's Ham & Beans and Cornbread
The ham and beans recipe is:

1 pound dry great Northern beans

1/2 pound cooked ham, diced [or omit ham]

1 small onion, diced

1/2 cup brown sugar

salt and pepper to taste

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 tablespoon dried parsley
Rinse beans in a large pot; discard shriveled beans and any small stones. Add 8 cups of cold water. Let stand overnight or at least 8 hours. Drain and rinse beans.

Return beans to pot and add ham, onion, brown sugar, salt, pepper, cayenne and parsley and water to cover. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 1 1/2 to 2 hours, until beans are tender. Add more water if necessary during cooking time.

As Alternative, put the beans etc. in slow cooker on low for 8-12 hours.

The cornbread recipe is:

Sweet Cornbread

1 c. flour

1 c. yellow cornmeal

2/3 c. sugar [or less]

1 tsp. salt

2 tsp. baking powder

2 eggs

1 cup milk

1/3 c. plus 2 tsp. vegetable oil

1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation:

In a small bowl, soak 1 c. cornmeal in 1 c. milk for 15 minutes without stirring. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cooking-spray a 9 to 12 inch round pan (use cast iron, if available, for even heating). In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt and baking powder with whisk. Stir in eggs, cornmeal and milk mixture, vegetable oil, and vanilla. Batter will be slightly lumpy. Pour into prepared pan and bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center of cornbread comes out clean.

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. "Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?" He said to him, "`You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: `You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: "What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." He said to them, "How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,

`The Lord said to my Lord,
"Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet"'?
If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?" No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

I hope you are enjoying summer's final weeks, keeping up with prayers and doing God's work daily.

Please plan to attend the service of Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, October 1 at 5:00. Even if you don't have a pet, this is a wondrous event and the animals seem to know what is happening! And, the next day, October 2, there will be no 8:00 service as we will be celebrating Ascension's 125th anniversary immediately following the 10:00 service. A scrumptious luncheon will follow! If you have not made your reservations, please call the office TODAY and leave message, including your name and the number of people who will be attending with you. $10 per person. Thanks!

Our sexton, Angel Perez, has informed the Wardens that the doors to the outside, as well as some interior doors, are not being locked after people leave. This is a security must and if you are the last one out, or if you think you are, please lock all doors that you used. Thank you.

Yesterday, Rev. Pat prepared a special selection of readings to highlight the meaning of the Ascension, so that we may next week celebrate our Anniversary more meaningfully. We also did some sketching of ideas for the East Wall decor, an ongoing exercise.

Ma Brown's pumpkin scones from New Zealand

These are a great way of using up left over pumpkin.

2 tablespoons of butter
1/2 cup of sugar - part brown or all brown
1 egg
1 cup cold mashed pumpkin [canned in a pinch]
2 cups of white flour
4 teaspoons of baking powder.

Cream the butter and sugar. Add egg and beat. Add pumpkin and beat. Add dry ingredients and mix in well.
Knead the dough and roll out to about 3/4 inch thick. Cut into suitable size pieces. Brush with milk.
Bake at 250C/480F for 10-12 minutes..

Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, `They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, `This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.' So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time."
Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures:
`The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord's doing,
and it is amazing in our eyes'?
Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls."
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was speaking about them. They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet.

Yesterday, the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, Rev. Pat preached about remembrance, reconciliation and
walking with Jesus as we ask for God's power to bring peace. Our 10 AM service was graced by four
RFD firefighters and two RPD police officers, to each of which groups Rev. Pat presented a quilted flag
of appreciation [by the Ascension Piecemakers - thanks, quilters], after offering a prayer of blessing and
dedication for each.
Come and gather 'round, as scripture comes to life..

Jesus you said we must learn to give up our life to receive Life. We pray for

all those who serve others as their ministry and as their careers. We bless them for making the service of others a central part of their life. We especially pray for the volunteers of Cephas some of whom have visited weekly in Attica and other prisons since 1973, after the Attica riots.

Volunteers Sought for Flu Vaccine Study

Research volunteers are needed for an investigational high-dose flu vaccine study at Vaccine Research Unit. Participants should be 65 or older and in good health.

Participation will require one or two clinic visits and weekly phone calls during flu season. Compensation is available and parking costs will be covered. For more information, call the Medical Center Vaccine Research Unit, 273-3990.

FRESH TOMATO SOUP

Printed from COOKS.COM

1 c. (2 stalks) chopped celery
1 sm. onion, chopped
1 carrot, grated
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1/4 c. butter
4 1/2 c. chicken broth, divided
1 qt. fresh tomatoes, peeled & chopped
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
4 tsp. sugar
1/4 c. flour

Saute celery, onion, carrot and green pepper in butter in large heavy pan. Add 4 cups broth, tomatoes, salt, pepper and sugar; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; simmer for 20 minutes. Blend flour with remaining 1/2 cup broth. Stir gradually into soup. Cook until slightly thickened, stirring frequently. Serve hot. Yield: 2 quarts.

Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; and he said to them, `You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.' So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o'clock, he did the same. And about five o'clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, `Why are you standing here idle all day?' They said to him, `Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, `You also go into the vineyard.' When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, `Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.' When those hired about five o'clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, `These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' But he replied to one of them, `Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?' So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

Lord your miracles have fed the hungry and cured the sick. Help us, as members  of your body, to feed the hungry in your name. Give us the wisdom to bring your  good news to the sick, the prisoners and those hungry for a better life, and  ourselves find food and health in the doing. We pray today for the women of  Albion prison, who are wondering how their children and families are doing in  this heat and in these hungry times. Give them peace and faith that you will be  with them.

There is God's work for each of us when we see new people on Sunday or at an event.
Let's introduce ourselves and make them welcome. An invitation to chat at Coffee Hour is a great icebreaker.
So is sitting with a new person and guiding her/him in the service, if this is a first or second time with us.
We never know when we may entertain angels unaware!

Yesterday, Rev. Pat in her sermon taught us that dreams are the language of the soul, mentioning that for three weeks our lessons reference dreams. We should be true to our roots as people of God and turn to our dreams, as we seek to find our spiritual way apart from the rational materialism of the everyday world. Don't miss these special moments in Rev. Pat's preaching. Come and gather 'round, as scripture comes to life.. You will be lifted up and rewarded.

After the 10 AM service Angel, our Sexton, treated us all to a birthday lunch in the Library. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Angel !
It was a time of warm fellowship and fun. Several neighbors stopped by to share and join the celebration!

With the season of picnics upon us, below is a recipe for a super summer cabbage salad.

SUPER SUMMER SALAD

1 lb pkg. coleslaw mix
3-4 green onions, chopped, [white and tender green]
1 pkg. ramen noodles,
2 tbsp. sesame seeds
1/3 c. slivered almonds

DRESSING:

3 tbsp. sugar
3 tbsp. cider or champagne vinegar
1/2 c. canola/other light oil
1/2 tsp. salt to taste
1/4 tsp. pepper
Seasonings from Ramen noodles [optional - taste first for compatibility]

Bake sesame seeds and almonds for 15 minutes at 350 degrees to roast. Mix dressing ingredients. Set aside. Mix salad ingredients. Break up ramen noodles and sprinkle on top. Add dressing just prior to serving. Mix/toss well.

Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. Jesus said to them, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They replied, "We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Dear Friends, June 13, 2011

Yesterday, Rev. Pat preached on themes of Pentecost. This is the longest season of the Church Year and gives us opportunity to live the lessons we are learning day by day. Lessons of how the Holy Spirit can help overcome our fears and lead us to realize our dreams. God has a great plan for us and is happy with us. All growth comes from the Holy Spirit working in us.

We are off to a good and busy start with Rev. Pat.

As you know, our Ascension Piecemakers Quilt Group made a stunning queen-size quilt. The drawing was held yesterday at the Coffee Hour, and all proceeds will go to the Bell Tower Restoration Project. The lucky recipient is Kelley Balcomb, a neighbor of Joan Swan.

It'll Be Huge!!! On Sunday, June 26th, 9 AM, Seabreeze Park on Culver Rd at the Lake - a Diocesan Eucharist and a day of fun and interaction with others from our many parishes. My Mother's Potato Salad
By Linda Larsen - from internet. [Thanks!]

This is my [Linda Larson's] mother's recipe, and it is the best potato salad recipe ever. It is the standard against which I
compare all potato salads! I usually roast potatoes for salad, but for this recipe they are really better boiled. The dressing
is velvety and creamy, perfectly seasoned.....Make extra dressing and bring it along to the picnic, adding it to the salad if
it seems dry, since the potatoes will absorb dressing as they stand.

Cook Time: 20 minutes
Chilling time: 3 hours
Total Time: 3 hours, 55 minutes
Yield: 10-12 servings
Ingredients:
• 5 pounds red potatoes
• 1 cup mayonnaise
• 1/2 cup Miracle Whip salad dressing (do NOT substitute)
• 1/3 cup milk
• 2 Tbsp. yellow mustard
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 1 bunch green onions, sliced
• 1 bunch radishes, cleaned and sliced
• 6 hard cooked eggs, sliced
Preparation:
Boil the potatoes until tender. about 20-30 minutes. You may need to take the smaller potatoes out at the 20 minute point;
larger potatoes may take up to 30 minutes. They're tender when you can easily stick a fork into the potato. Place on wire rack.
Meanwhile, in a large bowl blend mayonnaise, Miracle Whip, milk and mustard until smooth. This dressing should be fairly thin,
so don't skimp on the milk! Add salt and pepper to taste.
When cool enough to handle, peel the potatoes. Cut the warm potatoes into cubes and add to the dressing, folding carefully
as you add them. Add green onions and radishes and blend well. The hard cooked eggs are layered on top for a pretty
presentation. Chill well to let flavors blend.

Yesterday, Rev. Pat preached on themes of the Ascension of Christ and how they can lead us to lives of service and renewal, of ourselves and of the church. Our future will be larger than the past, as the future of the Christian Church became larger than Israel. We shall be filled with signs and mercy beyond our vision, giving meaning, purpose and joy to us. And so shall we now open our selves to the story of hope and adventure.

We are off to a good and busy start with Rev. Pat.

There will be two events this coming Sunday, June 12, featuring the new Eucharistic setting by Karen Noble Hanson, Canon and CIO of the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester. *The Eucharist at Christ Church Rochester, at 141 East Avenue at Gibbs will start at 10:45 a.m. All are welcome. The Jazz Group includes Trombonist Greg Lecewicz and his Metro Connection Jazz Group from Sarasota, Florida (by way of Poland) and many other musicians. Presented in Sarasota, Florida in February, the setting includes the "Creed", Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Lord's Prayer, Gloria and several other pieces. The Creed has been sung throughout the Unitred States, including Trinity Wall Street in the Easter season of 2010.

*Later that day, the music of the setting will be the basis of a Jazz Concert at St. Paul's Church, 25 Westminster Road at East Avenue at 3:45 PM. This concert will also include traditional Jazz.

It'll Be Huge!!! On Sunday, June 26th at Seabreeze Park on Culver Rd at the Lake there will be a Diocesan Eucharist and a day of fun and interaction with others from our many parishes. Red Velvet Cake Recipe for Pentecost

This is the legendary ruby colored red velvet cake with heavenly creamy rich frosting. This is an elegant cake, moist and delicious with a wonderful chocolate taste.

Red Velvet Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

Cake Ingredients:

1 stick butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 ounces red food coloring
2 Tablespoons cocoa (heaping)
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/4 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda

Frosting Ingredients:

3 Tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup butter

Directions:

Red Velvet Cake Directions:

1. In a larger mixer bowl, cream together butter and sugar.

2. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

3. In another bowl, mix red food coloring and cocoa until cocoa is completely dissolved. Add to the creamed mixture.

4. Mixing on low speed, add buttermilk and flour alternately, beginning and ending with flour. Mix well but do not over-beat to ensure a light fluffy cake.

5. Add vanilla flavoring, mix well.

6. Blend the baking soda into the batter.

7. Transfer into two floured and greased 9 inch round cake pans.

8. Bake in preheated 350 degree F oven for 25-30 minutes. Cool.

Frosting Directions:

1. Blend into a small saucepan the 3 tablespoons of flour and the cup of milk. Add the milk to the flour slowly, avoiding lumps.

2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture resembles glue.

3. Cool completely.

4. Cream together sugar, butter, and vanilla until fluffy.

5. Add to cooked mixture. Beat, high speed, until very fluffy. Frost cooled cake.

6. Add seven or nine strawberries or red cherries to the top for the 7 or 9 Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and a candle in the middle to represent the Light of Christ.

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, `Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

On this coming Sunday, June 5 we as a congregation will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, which is our name day. Therefore, the readings will be different.

Also, Rev. Pat suggests the congregation all wear white in honor of our feast day. So, if you have a white outfit or white shirt or jacket or ???, this would be good timing!

Here is an update of the health of Don Taylor's friend, Joe Interlicchia, who is the significant other of his daughter, Georgia. Joe is still seriously ill in Strong Memorial Hosp, but underwent a successful surgery today dealing with one of his health issues. I would ask you to add Joe to your daily prayers, please, for strength, healing and recovery to health.

Last reminder - This coming Saturday- June 4th at 11AM - Barbara Robson Memorial Service
Please accept this invitation to honor Barb in a celebration of her life and ministries. She and her sister Sally were parishoners whom we greatly miss. Barb died in Florida in late 2010. Bowmiller Rd BBQ Ribs

Ingredients
2-3 racks of baby ribs with ~12 ribs/rack [BJ's are good - look for lean - and usually 3-to-a-pak]
Around 4-6 oz cider vinegar
Pork Rub [or use = a shake of garlic powder, onion powder, ground black pepper and paprika]
Fistful brown sugar for each rib rack
18 oz jar BBQ sauce - your choice; smoky works well. Some of this will be for the ribs when served.
Plenty of heavy duty aluminum foil

Directions
Remove silver skin membrane from back of ribs, if present [work loose with a spoon, put fingers under and lift/peel off]
Line 12" x 18" baking pan/cookie baking tray with long/wide HD foil so you can wrap ribs
Put ribs meat meat side up into baking pan
Sprinkle liberally with vinegar, but no need to drown...
Sprinkle both sides with pork rub and pat into meat
Add fistful brown sugar on top each rack
Cover/wrap tightly, meat side up, with foil
Bake at 300F for 4-5 hours. 4 hours usually enough.
Open foil wrap carefully to avoid steam
Drain and discard liquid/juice from pan
Smear ribs with BBQ sauce of your choice, including back of ribs, and reclose foil loosely
Bake for additional 15 minutes @ 300F
Open foil and bake for 15 minutes more, but don't let ribs dry out
Remove from oven
Cut into 3-4 rib segments to serve.
Serve with additional BBQ sauce and ENJOY!

Option - you may place ribs onto hot charcoal/gas grill for 4-6 min/side after smearing BBQ sauce onto
ribs, but they may break and stick to grill.

Jesus looked up to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

"I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. "

Dear Friends, May 23, 2011

Yesterday was a a time of becoming better acquainted with the Rev. Patricia Cashman, our new Priest-in-Charge. Her first sermon began by sharing her thanks for being with all of us. Her phrase was 'unfeignedly thankful'. Likewise, we are most grateful, as well.

Taking a passage from the Gospel of John, she reflected on our own life stories of Jesus' coming to us, in His words 'I am with you'. Our response is to live so that His will be done, always mindful of the tension between faith and fear. Ascension will discover His will; and He will give us everything we ask. [John 14:14] In learning about growth, we shall embrace growth in the spirit, growth in mission, growth in membership and growth in finances. She assured us that we are living by God's spirit and that, indeed, Jesus came to give us life.

We are off to a fine start with Rev. Pat.
But you are needed to help write our next chapter!
Please make your personal commitment to be present in person on Sunday mornings - to greet Pat, to give her your personal Welcome and to share in the promise and fulfillment of her new ministry and ours.

If we want to grow and share God's prosperity of faith, we must love God, love our friends and then speak openly to them. A congregation grows starting with each faithful person. God will help us share the Bread of Life.....God will help us live into our Baptismal Covenant of sharing His word and our lives and resources. We never know how ready a friend may be to hear a word of encouragement in faith. We never know when God will bring someone to speak to us, and enrich our own life.
