We had a 1997 Renault Clio in today and it failed on offside front suspension. You will see from the pictures that the shock absorber had totally failed and the casing was broken. A very dangerous situation with absolutely no damping on one front corner and huge potential for the suspension to collapse on this side with loss of control and a crash inevitable.<br /> We believe that this problem started many months ago with an impact, possibly in the winter snow, to the wheel. This probably bent the strut and its casing allowing the winter salt to corrode it away until it broke.<br /> It is most likely that this driver would have carried on with this life threatening problem undetected had it not had an annual MOT test today. I sincerely hope that transport minister, Philip Hammond, who I am sure drives a new car, bears in mind that this car could have been coming towards him, on a bend, when it finally failed.
