When the club traded Alex Gonzalez to the Red Sox and decided to give rookie shortstop Paul Janish an opportunity, manager Dusty Baker was asked what kind of batting average Janish needed to pay every day.

Baker considered Janish’s flashy defense and said, “If he could hit .250, he could play every day if we surround him with enough offense.”

In the 19 games Janish has played since Gonzalez’s departure, he is hitting .247. But he is hitting .304 over his last 11 games and displaying the offense for which he is known.

Janish says it is a matter of playing time and that he is getting comfortable seeing major-league pitching by playing every game.

“It is obvious that he wants the job and he is doing a fine job of winning it,” said Baker.

Reds manager Dusty Baker can see right-hander Micah Owings, who also swings a bat well enough to have some folks wondering why he doesn’t play a regular position, filling the same role for the Reds that Kieschnick did for the Brewers in 2003 and 2004.
