In Sabarimala today is "The Makara Jyothi" Darsanam.. The natural Jyothi and Star which occurs during this day every year as soon as Thiruvabharana Deeparadhana is ritual is performed. "The Makara Vilakku" appears in the Sabari Hills Ponnambala Medu. And Sri Krishna Parunthu (Sri Garudan), The divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu takes three rounds of the Sabarimala Temple, flying above the devotees present at Sabarimala.

Makara Sankranthi is a widely celebrated festival in different parts of India. On this day, Lord Surya or Sun is worshiped. It is also celebrated as a harvest festival in many parts of India. On this day, Sun begins his journey to the Northern Hemisphere, most commonly called as Uttharayana. As with all other festivals, this festival also has many legends, two such commonly told legends are:

2. Bheeshma Pithamaha, who was able to choose when he will die, chose this day to end his life

Friends …here is a very popular and high energy song from the movie Bombay to Goa. I have tried my best to maintain the mood of the song in all possible ways without trying to copy the maestro word for word to the best of my abilities..also I guess my mimicry talents have really helped me here …have put my own effects of a child crying instead of a cat. The last time I sang this song was for college day celebrations at shanmukhanda hall 25 yrs ago …we had a blast then :-). This song is one of the best of Salilda's music and he has used the same tune in Hindi and Bengali too.

In Hindi the song was "Raaton ke saaye ghaney" from the movie "Annadata" sung by Lata Mangeshkar and in Bengali "Gahano raati ghanaay" sung by Sandhya Mukherjee, the stalwart singer.

The story here is.. Harshan was behind me almost a year to sing this song.. Eventhough I have sung this song during our Karaoke get-togethers,...(what fun we had--- memorable days!) I was not able to put it in the blog till now. But he was so particular that I should post it in the blog, Thanks Harshan, because of you this is coming out in the blog. so without saying the song is dedicated to you and your family.

The name is Krishnan, I met Krishnan on Muziboo and tell you what...have been very impressed by all his renditions ...be it malyalam or hindi. Especially his rendition of Jagjit singh ghazals are mind blowing (just borrowing a word from sa re ga ma pa) ...he is just awesome !!!Krishnan is in his early 50s but his voice is full of youthfulness...

"I am a 53 year old Marketing Professional settled in Mumbai ( formerly Bombay) since last few decades, India. Basically from Calicut, Kerala, India. I am a singer right from my childhood . In the process of settling down in life, could not pursue my passion , singing, to the extent I should have, though I have had my share of successes in my school / college days as well as in the early '80s when I used to sing in stage shows . I was also a 'B grade artiste' (singer) at the All India Radio, Trichur in the mid seventies. I was running an orchestra troupe of my own in the early eighties in Mumbai, but just for a short period as was unable to continue it due administrative hassles....

Now at my age, I find myself in the "Second Innings" with greater success, thanks to Karaoke & the internet. Better late than never. We invite you to celebrate all that is embodied by the mother, on Mother's day by listening to this track "Kamalasana" from the album 'Vismaya (Wonder!) - An Indo Celtic Musical Journey'. This song (and others in this album) are original Sanskrit compositions of the legendary composer and singer, Sri Muthusvami Dikshitar.

Based on a playful dance tune of European origin called 'galopede', this tune arrived in India in the late 1700s. Muthusvami Dikshitar, listened to this tune and wrote lyrics in sanskrit in praise of Kamalamba of Tiruvarur set to this tune. Every line of the song ends in three claps and the lyrics clearly match this structure. This composition /song cannot be categorized as Indian or Western, and at the same time must be thought of as both.

The album Vismaya is a unique presentation of Dikshitar's svarasahityas where he uniquely wrote powerful/meaningful lyrics in Sanskrit to Celtic and other folk tunes that had then made their way to India, making them accessible to common people, especially young children.

The song and the album are rich in rhythm and lyrical alliteration.

This is an another immortal song by the legendary Rafi saab. I recorded this song long time back and was not sure if I had given my best shot. The k-track was not all that great with very little support ...so this was quite a challenge to just let my voice carry this song.

I was planning on singing a new number and fell sick with fever and cold. I guess it will be a while before I regain my voice to sing .. :(

We are excited to introduce the musical genius from Cincinnati ...Kanniks Kannikeswaran. Kanniks is originally an IITian , software professional , musician ,composer and music teacher based in Cincinnati. I had the good fortune to learn classical vocals and to this day he remains my only music teacher.

Kanniks was the composer and producer of a gigantic musical production called SHANTI.
This production had around 100 singers from the Indian community and 50 singers from St.John's Choir. This program was sold out and was held in one the prestigious auditorim in Cincinnati - The Arnoff theatre. We were also a part of other productions like Chitram, Surya. You may visit

This is where we met, my good friends Sri (Krishna Prasad), Shama and Kishore ...its been a couple of years since, but the excitement and rehearsal sessions are still fresh in our minds.

Based on European folk tunes, they feature sanskrit lyrics written by Muthusvami Dikshitar (1775-1835), one of India's foremost composers - and are an ideal introduction to the world of music for young children.
