What are they good for? Shite

Thoughts

Politics; such a divisive subject. Some people say they want to unite, but only divide. Some don't speak of unison at all, but seem to pull people together.

Maybe you like this candidate, and dislike the other. Then the one you like says something that is contrary to how you think. Do you vote for the other candidate?

Politics is delicate surgery. Too far one way, or the other, and you may make someone angry, or even lose a friend.

I made a comment last year, about the president, and two Marines having to move their wedding because the president waned to 'play through'. I didn't consider it very controversial. But someone who I had been friends with for almost 40 years took exception. He said I was what was wrong with this country. He then asked me to de-friend him on Facebook. Several months later he introduced me to his much younger wife, and acted like we were just old friends. I was courteous, as a decent person, but not impressed.

I consider myself to be pretty conservative, but I don't try to persuade people that my thoughts are the right ones. If you don't agree with me politically, then I not only encourage you, but believe it is your duty, to vote your conscience. And I will support you in voting that way.

But don't try and stop me from voting my conscience. Protests in this country are a time-honored right. But please don't try and stop me from doing what I believe is right. You do not have the right to stop me.

As it is my duty to support you in voting for things I don't believe, it's your duty to support me. Some say that the right to free speech doesn't protect nice speech, but rather speech you find abhorrent. In the United States, The Ku Klux Klan and Black Lives Matter both have the right to speak their hatred. I do not like what they say, but I accept their right to say it.

Some will say that Donald Trump should not run for president because he is from outside politics, that he has no chops for it. Some would also say that Hillary should not run, as she has to many chops. My philosophy has always been, the first thing that should disqualify someone from running for public office, is the fact that they want to run for public office. In that vein I consider Hillary to be the least qualified person running.

Having said all of that, whoever is elected will be my president. I will not join those jackasses who said that George Bush or Barack Obama was not their president, simply because they didn't vote for them. It doesn't matter who you vote for, because in the end, someone gets the job. And like it or not, that person is the President.

I will end with this. No matter who is elected president, the United States will survive. The earth was hit by an asteroid 65 million years ago that killed most of the life on earth. But the planet is still here. And so the United States of America will continue to survive. I don't claim to be a hero, as I'm certainly not. I don't claim to be a veteran of a 'big' war, as I'm certainly not. But I am a veteran, nonetheless. As such, I have a certain affinity with movies that portray veterans, and how they portray them.

I first heard of 'Taking Chance' a few years ago. I am a fan of Kevin Bacon, and generally like his movies. The fact that he won an award for this movie certainly enhanced my desire to watch this movie. The fact that it was an excellent movie, and very moving, enhanced my enjoyment immeasurably.

It brings us the tale of a US Marine major who is feeling guilt, because young men are dying in Iraq, and he is a 'number cruncher'. He watches the names of wounded and killed soldiers scroll across his laptop as his wife sleeps.

One night he sees the name of a Marine Private First Class that is from his home town, and the guilt gets to him. He requests to escort the body home, to his family and friends. This is unusual, as an officer doesn't usually escort an enlisted marine home.

This sets up the movie for the Major's journey to this Marine's home; he sees how the individual citizens feel about the war in Iraq, their feelings about those returning from that war, and the family and friends that are left to mourn those who are lost to war.

The movie as a whole is very sad, but also uplifting. I usually tear up at a few spots. It is well worth spending 2 hours of your time watching good quality TV. Please do so to honor any veterans in your life, past, present, or, possibly, future. And thank them for their service.

Total Recall

So I just finished watching the new Total Recall movie with Colin Farrell. Not bad, but what I consider a popcorn movie. That being a movie that you watch, and enjoy, but after walking away from it, you don't really spend any time analyzing it. You don't delve into the character's motivations, the plot, or any of that other cinephile stuff. You enjoyed it while it was on the screen, and that's about it.

That said, it wasn't terrible. Colin Farrell does a good job with the actioner, not so much with the acting. Jessica Biel is alright, but never the exceptional actress. Kate Beckinsale, actress or not, is just lovely to look at. (I know that's sexist, but still true).

It has none of the humor or camp of the original starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It doesn't even have Mars. But it does have the 3-boobed woman. Whatever.

Big Wednesday (1978)

You know, I'm no surfer; never even tried it. But I love this movie. While surfing is a big part of this movie, its mostly used as a back drop to the story of 3 guys growing up.

The movie starts out in 1962, in Malibu, CA. It follows Matt, Jack, and Leroy "The Masochist" as they change from young guys surfing and partying, through adult pressures of young families and Viet Nam. The guys are played by Jan-Michael Vincent, William Katt, and Gary Busey, respectively.

As they grow, they take different paths in the real world. Do they fight in Viet Nam, or fight to stay out of the war? Do they accept their responsibilities as parents, or do they run from their young families?

These 3 guys are very believable in these parts. Especially Jan-Michael Vincent, as the brilliant surfer who can't seem to stay out of trouble, or the bottle. Backing them up in the cast is the always fun Reb Brown, who played Captain America in the late 70's, and young Robert Englund, as Fly, the narrator.

A lot of laughs from these guys, and other parts that are more poignant. Overall, one of my favorite movies.
I really liked it.

The film, directed by Joe Johnston, and starring Chris Evans, opened last week. It has made more than $100 million so far, and I have no doubt that it will be a huge money maker.

But at the end of the day, its just a fun movie. Lots of action, lots of nazis getting their butts kicked, and the good guys win. What could be better in a summer flick?

There was some controversy months back about whether the character was going to be the traditional Captain America, or were they going to make him someone more palatable to people in other countries. The studio even changed the name of the film in some countries. But rest assured, he's an American hero. All he wants is to serve his country, and stand up to the bullies of the world. Asked by the main villain what makes him so special, he replies, "Nothing. I'm just a kid from Brooklyn."

And that's the essence of the character. He just wants to do the right thing. And that's what makes him a hero.

The Social Network

I just watched the film "The Social Network". Its the history of the founders of the website Facebook. It has been lauded as one of, if not the, best films of 2010. I will leave that distinction to the historians and film critics. What I will say is this, I liked this film a great deal.

I originally thought that a film about the creator of Facebook may be interesting. But not Oscar-worthy. And I'm not saying here and now that it is worthy of an Academy award. But there is some damn fine acting in this film.

Jesse Eisenberg plays the main character, Mark Zuckerberg, a socially retarded undergrad at Harvard University. He is brilliant with computer and website programming. Much less so with people, even his friends. Eisenberg embodies this awkwardness brilliantly. He was equally excellent playing the straight man to Woody Harrelson's idiot in "Zombieland", and the dry humor of "Adventureland" also played to his strengths.

While I always enjoyed Justin Timberlake in his forays into Saturday Night Live land, I never really thought of him as an "actor". Well, pigs can fly. He acquits himself quite well in this film. His part is not as large as others, but he makes a much larger impact than some of the co-stars.

Director David Fincher did an excellent job. No doubt he will be up for an Oscar, along with Eisenberg. He also directed the excellent "Fight Club", and the crappy "Alien 3". Look next for his rendition of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" coming out later this year.

I highly recommend this film. I enjoyed it a lot. I actually watched it in one sitting (setting), which is unusual for me. I have seen commercials that place it on more than 100 Top Ten lists of critics' favorite films from last year. It's certainly on mine.

Salt

I recently watched this Angelina Jolie action movie. It tells the story of an undercover CIA agent who is outed as a possible deep cover Russian spy. Her fellow CIA pals are played by Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The film starts with her incarceration by the North Koreans, who believe her to be an American spy. She is tortured for 2 years, and then traded back to the Americans. The action starts soon after.

While I liked the film for the most part, there were a few aspects that I didn't. The flashbacks with her fiancé - husband, I don't think they really helped the film. He was a fairly minor character, and I didn't care about him at all.

Also, fairly early in the film I figured out the main plot, which is always a discouraging thing. I hate when that happens.

And some of the 'stunts' in the film were just plain impossible for a normal person to have pulled off.

It was originally supposed to be Tom Cruise in the lead role. But as they waited for him to sign, they thought Angelina might also fit, and she got it. Go figure.

All in all, a decent flick. Probably not one I will see again. But they did set it up for a possible sequel.
The title alone sets this movie up to be disliked by some people. But it's not a bad movie at all.

The movie is about a young man who wonders aloud to his friends why there are no super heroes out there. When reminded by his friends that no one has super heroes, he says that he means normal people that go out and try to help people. He endeavors to do just that.

After donning a makeshift costume, and heading out into the night looking for a lost kitten, he runs into a gang fight. After saving the life of the lone guy getting beaten, Kick Ass is born.

There are other heroes that take their cue from Kick Ass. Big Daddy is a Batman wannabe, and his daughter is the brutal Hit Girl. There has been some debate about some of the dialogue that the 12-year old actress uses in the film. At one point, she uses the dreaded 'C word'. Apparently, in the comic book that this movie is from, the character uses this word, and the director was unsure about how it would be for such a young girl to use it. So he had her film the scene using other, less offensive swear words. Then the actress' mother asked for the director to shoot it once using said uber-offensive word, and they kept it.

Other than that controversy, the film is a decent actioner. It has some decent humor, and even some emotion. All in all, I really enjoyed this film a lot.

Avatar

It's been quite a while since my last post. I recently watched 'Avatar' on Bluray. Wow!. What a difference it is watching it on Bluray, as opposed to other formats. While I'm still not fan of the green-tree hugging-anti-military theme, the visuals are astounding.

I finally have an understanding of why it took James Cameron so long to finally feel he could make the movie the way he saw it in his head. The animation, (I had to keep reminding myself that this is mostly an animated movie) is amazing. It's so life-like, the characters seem real. Especially the scenes where Jake and Neytiri are flying; the colors and lighting are really something.

If you can keep your negative feelings for this movie, (of which I have several) out of the way, you will probably enjoy this technological wonder. I may even have to retry it in 3D when it is re-released later this year.

Unthinkable

Its what I call a popcorn flick. You watch it, you enjoy it, then you never really think about it again. Its full of terrible one-liners, like: "Oh my God, I'm the Black Macgyver. Blagyver."

There is no ambiguity in the film. The good guys are the good guys, the bad guys the bad. No moral conflicts. The government is the ultimate bad guy, via Jason Patric's character. Typical fare for this type of movie; i.e. 'The Shooter', the Jason Bourne movies, and 'The Hulk".

And like 'The Hulk', this is another movie based on a comic book. Hollywood can't seem to write any new scripts these days. It's either from a comic book, a 70's TV show, or a remake of an earlier film. Not to mention the 're-imagining' of older films, such as 'Psycho' or 'Alice in Wonderland'.

But anywho, back to the film. After the Losers are crossed, and double crossed, they finally win the day, and get their old lives back. Was there ever any doubt? Not really. As action flicks go, not terrible. As long as it makes more money than 'Green Zone', I'll be happy. :)

Fat, drunk, and stupid....

That is a take off on one of the funnier lines from 'Animal House'. My friend Ken recently admonished me because I did not list 'Animal House' as one of my favorite movies. Trust me, the oversight has been corrected.

'Animal House' is a satirical look at life at an eastern college in the early sixties. Its full of drunk frat guys, promiscuous sorority girls, and crusty administrators. Our heroes are the brothers of Delta Chi fraternity. They range from Bluto, ("Seven years of college down the drain. And then, of course, there is Dean Wormer, ("Who dropped a whole truckload of fizzies into the swim meet? Who delivered the medical school cadavers to the alumni dinner? Every Halloween, the trees are filled with underwear. Every spring, the toilets explode").
'Animal House' came out in 1978. The script was based on many of the college adventures of the writers when they were in college. I first discovered this movie several years after it came out, most likely on a weekend night with my buddies Ken, Rob, or Jason. We were in high school, I'm pretty sure.

The basic premise of the film follows 2 college freshman as they navigate the social scene in college. They decide to pledge Delta Chi fraternity, as one of them, Flounder, has an older brother who belonged:

The rest of the film is full of wacky adventures, one-liners, and a horse that has a heart attack. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys juvenile humor. Then again, who doesn't?
I just watched the film "Almost Famous" the other day. I hadn't watched it in a while. What a great movie. The soundtrack is top notch, the acting was very good, but for me it was the story itself that stands out.

Writer/Director Cameron Crowe based the story on his own life. The movie is about a 15-year-old William, while trying to be a rock critic, gets the chance to travel on the road with an up and coming rock back in the spring of 1973. He does this by convincing everyone that he's 18, including the editor of Rolling Stone magazine. It is on this trip that he is able to grow and mature, away from his mother's loving, but cloistered home.

According to Wikipedia, 'The film is based on Crowe's experiences touring with rock bands The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. In a Rolling Stone article, he talks about how he lost his virginity, fell in love, and met his heroes, experiences that are shared by William, the main character in the film.'[1]

For me, one of the central relationships in the film are between William, Patrick Fugit, and the lead guitar player Russell, played by Billy Crudup. William views Russell with a lot of reverence. Through he course of the film, he comes to realize that Russell is just a guy, with as many flaws as everyone else.

The other significant relationship is between William and a groupie, or 'Band-aide', named Penny Lane, played by Kate Hudson. She starts out as somewhat of a mentor about life on the road. She helps to keep him safe, and to not look so 'starry-eyed' at these guys in the band.

Crowe won and Oscar for his screenplay, and the soundtrack won a Grammy. Crowe has also directed or written, 'Say Anything', 'Singles', 'Jerry Maguire', and 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High', (also based on his real life experiences).

When was the last time you saw a movie in an actual movie theater? Has it been a while? For me, the last movie I saw in a traditional venue was 'Superman Returns', way back in the summer of 2006.

I used to love going to the movies. The big screen, the popcorn with that thick, sorta buttery gel, and the surround sound. It was great. As a kid, I never noticed all the reasons not to go to the theater. I never noticed the broken seats, the sticky floors, the high prices (thanks Mom and Dad), or the idiots yakking throughout the whole movie.

When my brother and I started to buy DVDs back in early 1998, I could watch these movies in the comfort of my own couch. Get up whenever I need to, without missing any of the movie. Eat whatever we liked, even take out. It was great.

And not only could we watch what we liked, we could watch it how we liked. Want to listen to the director's commentary; done. Want to watch a short feature on how the movie was made; done. Want to hear interesting stuff from the composer who wrote the score; done. DVDs ushered in a whole new dimension of films to cinephiles all over the world. And don't get me started on the whole home theater phenomenon. Speakers to the front, sides, and in back of you, all with different parts of the movie environment coming out of them. The first time I heard the water dripping in the submarine battle scenes from 'Das Boot', it was amazing.

Now we have Bluray discs. While very similar to the traditional DVDs that came before, they are able to hold upwards of 10 times the amount of information. They are capable of showing movies in their true High Definition (HD) form, not scaled down for DVDs. They also are able to output much better audio. Instead of being restrained, they can now put out the full, lossless audio that they were meant to have. And all of their special features can also be in HD.

Quite often these days, when buying a Bluray movie, you will also get a DVD of the movie, and a digital copy. (Although for me, that seems a bit over the top). I can only imagine what will happen once they really get into this new 3D phase that's hitting the moving picture scene. We shall see.

Akira Kurosawa

He was good friends with American director, John Ford. He was heavily influenced by both American westerns and Shakespeare.

One I personally like is, "in the final scene of Throne of Blood, in which (Toshiro) Mifune is shot by arrows, Kurosawa used real arrows shot by expert archers from a short range, landing within centimetres of Mifune's body."[1]
You probably have, too. His movie "The Seven Samurai" was remade as "The Magnificent Seven". "Yojimbo" was remade as "A Fistful of Dollars", starring Clint Eastwood. And George Lucas has identified "The Hidden Fortress" as an influence on his Star Wars films.
They are being released on April 6th. These fantastic movies were a huge hit all over the world when they were released theatrically at Christmas in 2001, 2002, and 2003.

When they were released on DVD, they first came out in their theatrical versions. later, they were released in their Director's Cut versions. At the time, there was some concern that the studio was 'double-dipping', meaning getting double the money from consumers that would buy the first, then the second sets.

For me personally, I did not think this was the case. As most were aware at the time, the studio announced that they were going to release these movies in both version, separately and months apart. So I knew what to expect. It did not stop from buying both sets, though. I bought the first and enjoyed them for several months. When the Director's Cut versions came out, I bought them as well. I then gave my original set to my mother.

The Bluray sets are being released in the same way. I will most certainly do the same thing with these, too. As good as the DVDs looked, the Blurays will blow them away, speaking technically. And if anyone reading this would like my set of DVDs, please let me know.

Oscars, tribute

And Kathryn Bigelow won out over her ex-husband James Cameron for Best Director. Incidentally, this is the first time in the history of the Oscars that a woman has won that honor.

And Sandra Bullock won for Best Actress for her role in The Blind Side. Coincidentally, she also won an award for worst actress at this year's Razzies for the film All About Steve. And she accepted that award on stage Saturday. What a great sense of humor.

Jeff Bridges won for Best Actor. I didn't see all of the movie Crazy heart, but I liked what I did see. And he sang all his own music in the film; it wasn't dubbed by someone else. They also did that in the movie Walk The Line, about Johnny Cash. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon both sang their own songs, and she won the Oscar for Best Actress that year. Should be interesting, especially the Best picture category. This year, for the first time since 1943, there are 10 movies in this category, instead of the normal 5.

Some say the 2 movies vying for gold are Avatar and The Hurt Locker. These 2 couldn't be more different. Avatar is a huge movie; it is said to have cost $200 million plus, and has returned $2.5 billion. Hurt Locker cost $15 million, and so far has brought in about $20 million. Avatar is anti-military, whereas Hurt Locker is pro. Avatar is mostly animated; Hurt locker is live action. Avatar - science fiction; Hurt Locker - semi-fiction.

Of these 2, personally, I am rooting for Hurt Locker. Not just because of the left-wing. tree-hugging, anti-military stance of Avatar (although those reasons play a part). I was able to feel that Jeremy Renner's character was a real person, and not some big blue dude with a USB connection in his tail. I guess I could identify with it a lot more.

But if I had to choose from all 10 movies, I'd choose The Blind Side, with Sandra Bullock. What a great movie. Produced for $29 million, it has made $250 million in its run. And as of today, according to Box Office Mojo, it is still #29 on the charts after 105 days in theaters. Pretty amazing. Its also the highest grossing American film that's led by an actress. And Sandra is up for Best Actress, which I hope she gets.

John Wayne - correction, slight

(John) Wayne was born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa.[2] His middle name was soon changed from Robert to Mitchell when his parents decided to name their next son Robert.[3] (Years later, after Wayne became an actor, a publicist's error referred to his "real" name as Marion Michael Morrison instead of the correct Marion Mitchell Morrison. This error infected virtually every biography of Wayne until Roberts & Olson uncovered the facts in their biography John Wayne: American, drawing on the draft of Wayne's unfinished autobiography, among other sources.)[4][5][6]
