Jules Cheret, who created 2 movie posters in the 1890's, was the artist given credit for creating the first movie posters. By the end of the first decade of the 1900's, movies had become a great source of public entertainment. In this time period, the movie poster would become a standard size known as the one sheet measuring 27" x 41".

In the early days, the names of actors did not appear on the posters, which the movie studios liked, because it meant paying actors less money. It was in this early period in movie history, however, that movie studios realized movie stars were as much of an attraction to the moviegoer as the movie itself. Thus, the movie star was born, and movie posters began showcasing actors' names along with the title of the movie.

By the 1920's, the golden age of silent movies, movie posters became more artistic and spectacular, with accomplished artists being hired by movie studios to paint portraits of the stars for posters. By the late 1920's, movie poster images became sharper due to a new printing process developed by the Morgan Litho Company.

In the 1930's, also known in the movie industry as "The Golden Age of Movies", another style of movie poster was created, the half sheet. Major movies would sometimes get more than the two styles. However, due to the depression, many movie materials were being created more cheaply, causing a loss of quality in movie posters.

The dawn of World War II in 1941 saw many of the movie stars heading off to war and war was the major theme of movies at that time. The movie industry cut advertising costs and used cheaper paper for posters due to the paper shortage of wartime.

By the 1970's, movie posters used photography, occasionally using drawing and painting styles. Movie posters at this time were being printed on a clay-coated paper, which gave them a glossy finish. Star Wars and Star Trek posters were the most popular posters of the time and are still collected by many today.

In the 1980's, the age of the special effects blockbuster, the mini sheet was invented, and video stores became popular, thus the video store poster was created. Today, reprints of movie posters are mass-produced and sold in many stores or are just a click away on the Internet. There are several types of movie posters. Because of their rarity, the avid movie poster collector has concentrated on movie poster or theater art. These are the posters that are delivered and displayed by the movie theaters and then intended to be thrown away. Another type of movie poster is the commercial poster, which is mass-produced for direct sale to the public. Video posters are distributed to video rental stores for advertising material. Cable and TV posters are use as promotional material for TV stations for their programming. Like theater art, video posters and cable and TV posters are not produced for the public. Although not as valuable as theater art, these types of posters are still popular among collectors. Special promotion posters promote a movie along with a product. Finally, there are anniversary issues, limited editions, and special releases that are released in limited quantities and are gaining favor with the theatre art collector. Other types of movie posters include advance posters that promote a movie well ahead of the movie's release. The award poster, which indicates that a movie has won an Academy award. The combo poster, advertising two movies instead of just one. The popular double-sided poster that has art on both sides, with the artwork reversed on one side of the poster. There are featurette posters highlighting short films or cartoons, review posters for when a movie gets a good review, serial posters for movie serials, and special distribution posters.

With the popularity of movie posters has come the necessity to create various sizes of posters. The first and most widely used poster is the one sheet, which is usually 27" x 41". The subway, also known as the two sheet, is larger but not exactly two times the size of the one sheet. The 3 sheet is three times the size of the one sheet measuring at 41" x 81". The 6 sheet is six times the size of the one sheet measuring of 81" x 81". There is also a 12 sheet approximately twelve times the size of a one sheet, and the colossal sized 24 sheet measuring 246" x by 108". Other sizes include the mini sheet, which is usually much smaller than the one sheet and comes in a variety of sizes, and the stock sheet issued for cartoons or other shorts.

As with all collectibles, condition is a great factor when placing a value on posters. A movie poster's value is determined by demand, rarity, and condition. Poster collectors use the same grade system used by comic book collectors: mint (perfect), near mint, very good, good, fair, and poor.

For those who want to be serious movie poster collectors, you will need to know some things about taking care of your movie poster art.

Tips to retain the total collectable value of movie posters
Never alter the appearance of a poster. Do not fold, bend, tear, or punch holes in it even to hang it on your wall.

Never place a movie poster in direct sunlight. UV lights can also be harmful.

Don't write on your poster, even on the back. Marks on the back can sometimes be seen from the other side, taking away from the poster's value.

Never put tape on the front of a poster even to repair tears. If you do use tape, use acid free tape available from an art supply shop, and place the tape on the back. For expensive movie art take it to a professional to be restored. Posters can be restored the same way rare comic books are professionally restored.

When shipping posters use thick poster tubes or bubble envelopes.
For long time storage, frame, or place the poster in a plastic bag or tube, and keep it in a cool dry climate.

When framing a poster do not dry mount it, and use an acid free backing board.

Now that you know a little more about movie posters and movie poster collecting, go ahead, start collecting!
No, I don't mean crazy for Harold Lloyd's comedy Movie Crazy from 1932 about a young man with little or no acting ability, desperately trying to be in the movies. I mean, are you crazy for movies period? I must admit I'm a cracker for movies. So, all those who consider themselves movie crazy raise your hands. Yup, that's almost everybody. Why are we movie crazy? Why do we live in a movie crazed society? Hey, what are movies anyway?

Movies are ideas and/or stories brought to an audience through emotion by sound and a sequence of seamless images. Thanks to Google Search.

How popular are movies? Well, the keyword "movies" boasts a mind boggling 1.1 billion and growing number of searches on Google's search engine alone. And the keyword "movie trailers" has collected a whopping 127 million plus searches. Watching movie trailers on the internet has become a popular past time for many. I know my husband's one of them. He loves to watch his movie trailers.

This past year alone has brought in an astonishing box office revenue of 29.2 billion dollars worldwide just for 2009. Movies are watched and made worldwide. The language gap has been dissolved due to the addition of subtitles. Now we can all share in the universal movie experience. As well as being universal, movies are made for everyone young and old. Why you can even see generations at most Disney or kid movie showings. There is something out there for everyone no matter what your age.

We celebrate movies and we celebrate the stars in our movies. We bring them into our homes by way of TV shows dedicated to stars like ET, ET Canada, Access Hollywood and TMZ to name a few. We grab supermarket tabloids like The National Enquirer and Star scanning the latest celebrity gossip and stuff them into our shopping carts when no one is looking.

We have Oscar parties like we do Superbowl parties and even bet or at least announce our opinions on who the winners of the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, MTV Awards, etc. will be. Then there's the classic TV shows like 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous' that we turned on faithfully oohing and aahing over the content like it was fine wine. The show ran for over 10 years (March 1984 - September 1995). What a run! What a concept! We actually got to tag along and drool over the extravagant homes, lifestyles and dream vacations spots of the stars. Today, you can watch similar shows like MTV's 'Cribs' and VH1's 'The Fabulous Life of....'

If you're more of a home body you don't have to leave the comfort of your own home to see a movie. You can literally channel movies through your TV's regular cable or on specialty movie channels like Thrill, The Movie Network, HBO, Movie Central, Showtime, Turner Classic Movies, etc. And that's after you've clicked through the TV movies of the week, recorded movies on your PVR or sent your kids to the video store to rent one of this week's new releases. Oh, and not to mention you can buy movies from your brick and mortar video store down the street or even online on eBay or Amazon.

How do we get our golden tickets to these grand palaces? We buy cereal boxes and cut out cardboard vouchers, we use our air miles points or exchange reward points to turn cash into movie tickets. We fill out contest forms in hopes to be chosen as the lucky few to attend pre-screenings to our favourite movies before they even hit theatres. We also line red carpets around the world and tune into celebrity interviews on our favourite daytime and night-time shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, Oprah and Regis & Kelly.

What beats the movie experience? Nothing. We cue up for our tickets, purchase our favourite goodies, grab the latest Famous or Tribute magazine for casual light reading before our movie (while devouring our real buttered popcorn or bag of liquorice). The lights go dim, the screen widens and the picture and sound arrive simultaneously. We anticipate the movie previews while watching the nuisance commercials and then there they are. Those big beautiful coming attractions in all their glory. We whisper yeas or nays or give a thumbs up to our pals seated beside us for the next movie adventure we'll be planning. Then if we're lucky, that is, the guys will get to hear the bellow of the THX sound effect that roars around the theatre. (Hey, guys you can hear it on youtube or download it as a free mp3 or ring tone). Then the wait is over. Whoopee! And the adventure begins...

Again, why are we movie crazy? Could it be because movies are inexpensive; a cheap date; or an economical family outing. Is it that the encounter can be even more enhanced through the Imax or 3-D experience. Or does it go deeper. A chance to escape the real world if only for a few hours. Movies evoke emotion whether it's excitement, laughter, terror, sadness, inspiration, faith, love, etc. Maybe you're on an unpredictable adventure, figuring out a mystery or watching a family deal with loss. Movie's take us away; anywhere we want to go. Even the theatre itself is an experience as we've discovered. The lights, sound, feel, big screen, comfy oversized fabric chairs, convenient cup holders, popcorn and munchies from the snack stand, etc. The movie experience really touches on all our senses. What movies have stirred you emotionally lately?

The movies are one place where you can choose what you want to see and feel. If I want to be happy I'll go see a light hearted comedy. If I want to be thrilled I'll go see a thriller or horror. And if I want to entertain my little niece and nephew I'll go see the latest animated movie, etc. Then there's the rest of the genres that fill out the movie experience: action and adventure, crime and gangster, drama, epics/historical, musicals/dance, science-fiction, war, documentary, westerns, biopics, chick-flicks, detective and mystery, disaster, fantasy, film noir, guy films, melodramas/weepers, road films, romance, sports, supernatural, etc.

Movies bring people together. They are something to talk about at the watering hole at your 9 to 5 job, chat amongst your facebook friends or discuss in forums. We can talk about the worst movies we've seen or our all time favourites. We can quiz each other on movie trivia, quotes and songs. We can read or write reviews on movies, look up movie ratings and purchase books on movies. We can even get the latest Hollywood gossip sent to our email boxes or go online to peruse blogs such as Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy blog.

Is there any other advantage from movies other than the whole entertainment experience? Actually, there is. Many professional therapists are using movies to help people in crisis. There is a therapeutic movement using---you guessed it---movies. It's called Cinema Therapy. Cinema therapy is used because it's readily available (there's a movie theatre in every city pretty much) and the subject matter of most films are familiar to everyone. It also enhances the rapport between both the client and the therapist. Who doesn't want to talk movies.

Other benefits include the release of emotions such as when we laugh during a comedy our laughter releases stress, tension and/or pain. A tear jerker that makes us cry releases built-up/blocked emotions. How about movies that touch on relationships or parenting. These observations and/or lessons can bring us closer together with people, make us analyze our current situations/relationships or make us realize we've got work to do.

And if there's one last thing that solidifies our movie crazy mentality it's our want or longing to actually be in a movie and/or meet a movie star. Well, this just in---you can do both. Have you heard the term TV or movie extra? If you want a better than bird's eye view of making of a movie and to encounter a movie star or two sign-up to be an extra. You'll get paid, fed, be on set and maybe bump elbows with your favourite movie star.
These are particular genres of movies which entertain us. They make us laugh, make us cry and sometimes makes us scare also, but in any case we get entertained and feel excitement. Main movie genres can be categorised into 11 kinds. These 11 kinds of movie genres are Action Movies, Adventure Movies, Comedy Movies, Crime & Gangster Movies, Drama Movies, Epics/Historical Movies, Horror Movies, Musical (Dance) Movies, Science Fiction Movies, War (Anti-War) Movies and Westerns.

As name suggests each genre of the movie is filled with the named element, such as action with great stunts, comedy with nerve-tickling sequences and like that. Along with traditional genre movie kinds there are also non-genre movie categories. Some of these non-genre movie categories may be Animated Movies, Classic Movies, Cult Movies, Children Movies and like that. Whatever the genre is whatever the categories are, this is a true fact that movies entertain truly and they lead us to a whole new world of fantasies.
Horror movies have often a terrifying and shocking finale. They scare us while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience. Horror movies feature a wide range of styles, from the earliest silent Nosferatu classic, to today's CGI monsters and deranged humans. They are sometimes combined with science fiction. Here the menace or monster is related to a corruption of technology, or when Earth is threatened by aliens. The scariest movies show sequences of an old and deserted big palace with no one, but a ghost and a group of people meet him or her in bizarre consequences. These movies are full of special sound effects and light effects.

Everyone loves to get oneself scared by watching these horror movies. It scares, excites and sometimes makes us laugh under fear also. Being able to download movies at the click of a mouse has opened up our 17 inch monitor into a movie theater, one that never closes at night, and screens any movie we desire to watch at our beck and call. Such is how far our technology has advanced. We will see why unlimited movie downloads online stores have revolutionized the whole movie industry and what you are missing out if you are still stuck with your VCDs and DVDs.

It wasn't so long ago when we were still relying on VCRs, acronym for video recorders to watch movies on tapes. If you are born after the 80's, you probably might have a very vague idea or mental image about what those gadgets are. Perhaps you have sat beside your grandma on the couch watching a recorded TV show or movie from one of those little black boxes, or you have come across one of those in the junkyard or even museum. In the 90s, the arrival of those small little discs called video compact discs or VCDs took the movie industry by storm. Compact by the standards of those days, these still have its place in the home of many Americans. However, fast forward to today, downloading and watching movies online is gaining such great speeds that we simply cannot ignore.

You may wonder what's the big deal about being able to access unlimited movie downloads. After-all, your VCD and DVDs are working well and not giving you problems right? Let's see what you are missing out as your neighbor next door is quietly downloading his favorite TV show.

1. Convenience of Movie Downloads
Buying a VCD or DVD is easy if you know what title you are looking for. However, if you are like me who simply want to grab a good show so that you can relax and watch it during the weekend, imagine with me then that you could be doing a little searching at the movie store reading reviews and thinking which movie is good and worth your bucks. You cannot be buying everything you like because they are costly right? Next, you would be queuing with the rest of the folks for your turn to make your payment. Compress that image and envisage you sitting in front of the computer, and with a few clicks, the movie is ready for viewing. Isn't that cool?
Whether you want to watch a movie or TV show at 4am, or on an off day, the movie sites are there round the clock, ready to serve you with unlimited movie downloads.

2. Cheaper Alternative
Movie VCD and DVD prices have dwindled over time owing to lower costs of production. If you have studied economics, you would understand about fixed capital costs and why mass manufacturing would eventually bring costs down. Nevertheless, to cough out $10 or more for a VCD/DVD is still too expensive to me. Well, after all, you probably would only watch it once and then chuck it aside to collect dust. Download sites however run on a lifetime membership model where you can gain access to virtually unlimited movie downloads. And the best part is you don't pay for per movie download, but one low payment for lifetime access. We are not even talking about thousands or hundreds of dollars, but the cost of one or two good DVDs.

3. Movie Downloads Are Safe & Legal
People are concerned about downloading movies online. That is totally understandable for two reasons. Downloading a file online can expose your computer to harmful adware or spyware. Worse still, if you are downloading a movie illegally, this could land you in big trouble with the law. But these two problems are well taken care of at these unlimited movie downloads sites. Firstly, they ensure secured downloading and protection against attacks of adware and spyware. Secondly, many of these sites have made agreements with the original producers of those movies such as studios, etc to release those movies online for downloading. With these two worries behind us, it becomes clear that having access to unlimited movie downloads is a strong proposition for us not to ignore these download sites.

These reasons are probably the push factors for more people flocking to their sites instead of heading to traditional movie stores or cinema theaters for a movie. Read a review about those unlimited movie downloads sites at my blog to find out which are the hot favorites among movie viewers nowadays.

Davion is a successful webmaster, author and a movie lover.
Online DVD Movie Clubs
Online there are a number of DVD movie clubs that include family movies in their rental libraries, but only a few actually specialize in providing quality family fare.
While other companies produce some family pictures, none has come close to the huge library of movies that Disney has given us.
Walt Disney brought us Steamboat Willie in 1928 starring Mickey Mouse and in 1973, the Disney Studios gave us Snow White, the first feature length animated movie.

Disney Movie Club
Online the Disney Movie Club offers their signature classic movies, recent releases, preschool videos, sing-a-long video and other popular family choices.
Movie Clubs
Other online family movie clubs include Family Pass (formerly known as Mentura) which bills itself as "your ticket to family entertainment." Family Pass carries a wide selection of movies, television programs, educational and home school videos and spiritual fare. All targeted at a family audience.

Edited Movies
Another popular source of movies suitable for family viewing comes from companies that specialize in editing movies to remove profanity, excessive violence and more adult situations.
Club members can rent the edited, version of popular movies that might otherwise be far less than family friendly.
Online clubs that edit movies include CleanFilms, Flick's Club, Family Edited DVDs and CleanFlix to name a few.

DVD Software Filters
A company called ClearPlay offers DVD software that removes graphic violence, profanity and more adult situations. Movie filters are put together for specific movies and ClearPlay's list continues to grow.

Family Movie Reviews
Online is also a great place to discover family movie review sites that help parents when it comes to deciding which movies to see in theatres or on DVD.

The Dove Foundation, long a family movie advocate, provides online movie and video reviews. And if you're out shopping for movies or videos at your favorite store, you can look for the Dove Foundation's Seal of Approval (much like the "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval"). The Dove Foundation's seal is only awarded to movies and videos that meet certain family viewing standards and have been screened and reviewed by Dove Foundation reviewers.

Other movie reviews available online include The Family Style Movie Guide, Movie Mom, Screen It!, Family Cow, Grading the Movies, Kids-In-Mind, and Ted Baehr's MovieGuide which examines and rates movies from a Christian value stand point.

Family Movie Night
Watching movies at home on DVD as a special night for the entire family has become very popular.
Why spend a small fortune taking your family to see a movie at a theatre when you can have quality fun time in your own home? With a special movie night you control the films your family sees. No more unpleasant surprises! And you're guaranteed the best seat in the house.

DVD Movie Club
It's easy to join an online movie club that offers movies for the family or better yet "specializes" in family movies and video.

So take a look at what's on the internet and join a family movie club. Most offer a variety of special benefits to club members that make online club membership very convenient and affordable.

Then pick up some delicious popcorn and some other treats and start the wonderful tradition of family movie night in your home, a tradition you and your children will fondly remember for years to come.
And remember, some of the best and most popular films of all time have been family movies.
The general public can draw from this delivery system to spend a few hours in total fantasy, or to have cultures presented and viewpoints acted out to inform and entertain.

Story-telling has always been a unique and honored method of communication and of making sense of the activities, possibilities and limitations around us. The ideas that often are lost in direct articulation, can be better understood when acted out in story form.

The USA presents a noble and free palette upon which uncensored story-telling is possible. And our free enterprise system supports and encourages the many delivery systems from which we can draw.
The time-honored movie delivery system of the public theatre is a grand example of combining entertainment and communication. Most of us have enjoyed the "dinner and movie", allowing for an inexpensive and thoroughly entertaining evening out.

Many of us have experienced the slightly weird but thoroughly enjoyable drive-in movie. This was often an eerie experience.

Rows of cars lined up in the dark to allow for the occupants to view a common movie shown on a huge screen was the norm. The nights could be clear and warm, with the accompanying bugs and mosquitoes flying in the window. The night could offer rain or wind, adding texture to a mystery that one could never experience but at a drive-in. Fog could roll through, adding to the drama.

And the eeriness of rows of dark cars, some with brake lights on, often with a horn blaring here and there, made the trip to the restroom an adventure.

This is just another but very appealing form of story-telling such as humans have participated in since the day of Cave Men. The uniquely human activity of trying to make sense out of life, as told in story form, is probably one of the most satisfying activities available to people.

The movie rental store added a new dimension to the movie delivery system. What luxury to bring the rented movie home. One could watch the movie at leisure in the peace and sanctuary of one's own home. The facilities are clean, the dinner preparation could become a part of the fun. The safety and security is a luxury that, 100 years ago, a King could not enjoy.
Of course, one would need to return the rented movie on time. This could add a bit of drama of its own, remembering to put the rented movie in the car on the way to work, remembering to actually drive to the rental store at some time during the day. But still, a great time was had by all.

A new and convenient movie delivery system has developed in the form of Netflix. One enters into an agreement with this company in which they will withdraw a stated dollar amount from your checking account monthly. In return, you are contracted to receive at home 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 movies, or whatever is convenient for you, at any one time.

They send you the movies you have chosen online, you watch at your leisure, and send it back in the mail. As soon as they receive the movie (usually 1 day), they return the next movie in your queue. This means you truly can watch a movie in your own time with no overdue charges. The movie is popped into the mail and forgotten.

There is another alternative, however, this one is Satellite TV for PC. You don't need a satellite dish, receiver, or any cable or satellite service! All you need is an internet connection and a computer. You get a large number of stations worldwide, and plenty of movies.
"Road Trip USA...takes you as close to the real America as you are ever likely to get."
Here's a question for you. If you had the time and the money to undertake just one extensive trip by road on any continent on the planet, which one would you choose, and where would you go? I ask this question because time and money seem to be the only things stopping many people from undertaking their ultimate dream vacation.

Last year (March 2008), a survey conducted by the Australian online automotive website Cars Guide indicated that Aussies love to hit the road. In fact, the survey of 810 respondents, found a whopping 99 per cent of Australians would go on a road trip because of the freedom and spontaneity it allows.
Not long after the Cars Guide survey appeared, a Rand McNally survey (May 2008), examining American attitudes to long road journeys found similar opinions to this form of vacation. According to the Rand McNally survey (of 2,030 U.S. adults), three in four adults (75%) were at least somewhat likely to take a road trip, and about three in ten (29%) said they were very likely.

Meanwhile, a recent article published in the online edition of the Wall Street Journal (May 2009), reported that the road trip was poised to make a comeback as the American summer travel season began, despite the lingering recession and rising fuel prices.

While the cost of fuel and accommodation were nominated as the two biggest concerns both in Australia and America, it seems our respective love affairs for the open road is not likely to diminish any time soon.
Which brings me to Road Trip USA.

Jamie Jensen's best-selling guide book, Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America's Two-Lane Highways, (Fifth Edition, Avalon Travel, 2009) takes you as close to the real America as you are ever likely to get.

With 11 trips to choose from, covering classic American landscapes such as the Appalachian Trail, Atlantic Coast, Oregon Trail, and the famed Route 66, Road Trip USA steers intrepid road warriors through major cities like San Francisco and Chicago as well as remote, but charming all-American towns like Dyersville, Mississippi (where the baseball field created for the Kevin Costner movie Field of Dreams attracts visitors from near and far); or the small blue-collar town of Seneca Falls, in New York state (which saw the birth of the American women's movement in July 1848)
.
As you might expect, Jensen's routes also lead to popular destinations such as Disneyland, Yellowstone National Park, Niagara Falls, and the Statue of Liberty. Complete with local lore; oddball trivia (Memphis's gifts to American culture - and the world's - include the supermarket, the drive-in restaurant, the Holiday Inn, oh, and Elvis Presley). Filled with noteworthy details and roadside curiosities (a sign in Texas spelling out the command: "Rattlesnakes Exit Here"), Road Trip USA contains a wealth of recommendations on where to stop, what to see, and where to eat and sleep. This is one guide aimed at getting travelers off the freeway system, and driving into the heart and soul of America.

Other features of this edition include:
o A flexible network of route combinations, color-coded and extensively cross-referenced to allow for hundreds of possible itineraries
o More than 125 detailed driving maps
o Full-color interior with modern and vintage photos and illustrations
o A road trip resources section with contact information for popular hotel and motel chains, car rental companies, state tourism boards, and road condition centers
My personal criteria for a good guide book is that it should inform, enlighten, and occasionally even surprise, so I'm please to say that Road Trip USA has no trouble being informative, enlightening, and yes, even surprising.
I have no hesitation in saying that when I undertake my own road trip across America, this will be the one book I will have by my side at all times.

What's Missing?

Unfortunately, Road Trip USA is almost entirely devoid of links to online resources. In an age when almost every printed piece of paper has a website URL and an Email address on it somewhere; and when so many modern electronic devices come Internet ready, this seems to be a glaring omission. I can only assume this is a deliberate choice by the author and publisher. With thousands of places of interest detailed in the book, they may have taken the decision to try and cut down on the visual clutter associated with URLs, and make the contents more 'readable' by avoiding them altogether.
While one doesn't expect a URL or Email address for every location mentioned in Road Trip USA, surely major places of interest do warrant the inclusion of a web link (where available). A quick look through other guide books on my bookshelf reveals that all those printed over the last five years or so, include web addresses throughout, and future editions of Road Trip USA would be well served to do the same.

Before You Go

I think Road Trip USA would also benefit from a 'Before You Go' section outlining basic information regarding preparations for the journey. This chapter might cover such topics as:
o Useful (online and offline) sources of information regarding trip preparations.
o Information about safety (personal, vehicle break down, and other safety issues)
o What to do in an emergency (break downs, accidents, personal attack, etc)
o A checklist of possible items to pack and prepare
o A checklist of pre-trip vehicle preparations (brakes, tyre and engine checks, etc)
o Traveling with children and pets
Road Trip USA does have a small Resources section at the end of the book, running to just eight and a half pages - four of which contain a Recommended Reading list. The others refer to organizations associated in some way with automobiles and highways; a short list of hotel/motel chains, and car rental companies; and a list of U.S. and Canadian agencies dealing with State Tourism and road conditions. And that's pretty much it.
The good news is, the omissions noted above do not detract in any way from the overall depth and quality of the detailed information presented in Road Trip USA. At just over 900 pages, I think it is fair to say that Road Trip USA covers all the 'bases' and then some. In deed, I have no hesitation in saying that when I undertake my own road trip across America, Road Trip USA will be the one book I will have by my side at all times.
Yes, rarely will a person deny that the Bollywood filmdom has been essentially male-centric, leaving little space for the female counterparts to evolve and grow as versatile performers. The roles they played were mostly of the "sati savitri" mould, lacking variety and depth of the 'female psyche'. However, film-makers like Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Mehboob Khan and Raj Kapoor in the 50's and 60's, marked an exception with their brilliant presentation of women excelling as wife, mother and beloved. Some of their films portray the brilliant craftsmanship of the 'flesh-and-blood' women, with all their inner depth and exquisite spirited individuality. Take for instance, "Mother India", "Pyaasa", "Kaagaz ka phool" and "Madhumati". A close look into all these four films will show you how they celebrate the extreme gracefulness and vigor of women in the face of personal adversity. These film-makers gave constant effort to present the constructive world of the female protagonists' emotions with their supreme artistry and depth of human understanding.

Again, the 70's, 80's and 90's witnessed a severe decadence in the portrayal of the 'heroine' in mainstream Indian cinema. It was then that the 'female' protagonist was reduced to a 'heroine', connoting the image of mere glamour-dolls, dancing around trees with heroes and performing cabaret numbers. This way, she was projected as a show-piece or in other words, as a "feel-good touch" to the film, rather than being a flesh-and-blood human being in her own right. However, even in the midst of such general decadence, a few films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee stood out as prominent variations with their presentation of the essence of the female soul. Nevertheless, these films had their common success quotient of romantic songs, melodies and other "feel-good" factors for which Hindi films are recognized today. However, the handling of the female protagonist was sensitive enough, compared to numerous other formula-films released at the same time. Take for instance, "Abhimaan", where we see the extremely soulful Jaya Bhaduri giving up her musical career for the whims of her jealous husband and later coming to terms with her personal agony through the magical device of music. Again, in "Mili", we find another bubbly, spirited Jaya, suddenly struck with Leukemia and striving to live life with the same animated zeal with her beloved. "Chhoti si baat" and "Rajnigandha", on the other hand, reflects on the lives of the working women of the 70's and the dilemma they experience with regards to the men in their lives, though in different contexts.

Leaving aside the mainstream films of Bollywood, the films of Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Hritwik Ghatak in Bengal should be mentioned specifically in regard to the psychological exploration of the female protagonist. Ray, in "Charulata" in the 60's, introduced us to the magnificent "Charu" with all her subtlety and quest for a life of creativity. In her relationship with "Amal", which begins with Charu exploring her literary and creative pursuits, the much needed intellectual companionship and attention forms the crux of this "extra-marital" liaison that changes her inner being forever. Again, Ray in "Ghare Bairey" and "Mahanagar", depicts the female ever grappling with uncertainty and extra-terrestrial reality, with exploring the emergence of the modern woman in the upper-class of colonial India. One can not help drawing parallels with Ibsen's "A Doll's House", as these two films, like this play, marks the female's quest for her identity, an introspection of her soul, and a gradual self-realization, defying all set patterns of a male-dominated society. On the other hand, Mrinal Sen, in "Ekdin Pratidin", explores the turbulent life of a working woman and focuses on her inner turmoil questioning the so-called "righteousness" of the external world. The film depicts the trauma induced in a lower-middle class Bengali home when the young daughter fails to return home on time. As the family is engulfed in anxiety, many facades crack and unresolved tensions surface, exposing the hypocrisies and pretensions of so-called "respectability". Again, in "Durotto", Sen speaks of 'distance' between a married couple and the pain of their alienation. Mamata Shankar here plays the wife ravaged by the bitterness of divorce and later gleaming with the hope of reconciliation.

Hrithwik Ghatak's "Meghe Dhaka Tara", "Komolgandhar" and "Subarnarekha" on the other hand, portrays the conflicting worlds of the females struggling for livelihood in the post-partition Bengal. The partition, with its devastating repercussions, forced the women of the middle and lower-middle class families to turn as bread-winners of the house. The films of Ghatak, based on these stark fragments of reality, explore the subtle pains of the women under such engrossing situations.

Today, the depiction of the female protagonist has been ever more challenging in context of her sexual identity. The seed of this quest was first sown by the dynamic Aparna Sen in the 80's with "Paroma", where the woman tread the path of so-called "promiscuity" only to gain psychological maturity in the long run. Today, directors like Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair and Meghna Gulzar are upright enough to depict 'taboo topics' like lesbianism, polygamy and even surrogate motherhood, where its woman who takes the lead role in proposing, making love and even in deciding to "lease" her womb without the permission of her husband-to-be! While in "Fire" and "Kamasutra", the women brave the world to explore their sexual desires, in Mahesh Manjrekar's "Astitva", the soulful Aditi gives birth to a child out of wedlock and shatters the vain world of male vanity when ultimately the truth is disclosed. The film questions the feminist moral concerns through the detailed examination of sexual and familial relationships. Again, very recently, in "Shunyo-e-buke", a Bengali film by Koushik Ganguly, the protagonist is a flat-chested woman of the 21st century who questions the very basis of judging the worth of a woman "by her cleavage". In a vain society where a well-rounded, curvaceous figure is regarded as a supreme embodiment of female beauty, where her bust line holds more value than her brain and her emotions, this hard-hitting film questions the projection of women as sex objects in Indian society.

Thus, from Hritwik Ghatak's "Subarnarekha" to Rituparno Ghosh's "Bariwali", from Raj Kapoor's "Ram Teri Ganga Maili" to Madhur Bhandarkar's "Chandni Bar", we see the changing face of Indian women enmeshed in their private world of inner turmoil and the external world of multiple challenges. Women in India, defined by a set of relationships and models of conduct within the framework of a created society, have over the years, learned to live under the twin whips of heritage and modernity; and it is welcome if more and more directors in the coming years project the awakening feminine consciousness, breaking archetypal patterns with their clarity of perception. On a lighter note, our elder generation, earlier exposed to the "vampire" Helen, is now face-to-face with the more "fatal" Urmila Matondkar. Many are saying that the change is "delicious" for their "filmy" palate!
The trends are modern yet depicting the Indian set up. There are skilled professionals who have taken cinematography to an elevated level. Film launches and promotions are eclectic happenings with careful research and marketing skills. The earlier trends in Indian cinema was more specifically related to the Indian audience but the recent incline is towards a global concept.
Parallel cinema is very much a reflection of the happenings in the society. Again this kind of cinema is also emerging to be a modern subject. There are actors who are willing to explore their skills in experimenting with bold and untouched subjects. Actors are going global by also accepting offers abroad. It is an idea to hold premiere shows abroad and releases are also designed to get the patronage of the NRI audience.

Music in Indian cinema has gained prominence. Details of the background score is of international value. The promos and teasers prior to release of a movie are slotted with television channels to attract the masses and spike their curiosity. Indian film makers enjoy the source from foreign flicks, though Indianising the concepts is an experts job. There are many aspiring talents who go through a perfect schedule of film grooming and mentoring which was not very much a trend in the past.

Again the slotting of a persona as a character artiste or a villain is no more typical. The adaptation to a particular role is done with much ease as actors and directors work with an open concept to achieve the demand of the role. The protagonist of a film is very much supported by other star cast and multi star casting is the latest phenomenon. The looks are chipper with much efforts on style and body image. The demand of the role for each film is indicated while presenting the script during the 'sittings' and the actor morphs beautifully into the mould. Film making is an intelligent activity and the digital technology as well acoustics requires constant updates. Job avenues are opening up in the field of animation and music industry. The competition is tough as the bar is high on perfection.

The passion in Indian cinema is well maintained with growing benefaction. The films are also Indian in terms of family bonding and virtues. Modern parallel cinema is bold, comedy is original, cult films are being conceptualized and there is a constant passion to improve. Foreign locales are being explored to create the 'never before' scenes and there is a certain crispness to the impression. Glamor goes full-on during the award functions with celebrity felicitation and performances.
From origin, cinemas act as the mirrors & simulate incidents that happen in society. Cinemas give not only recreation, entertainment but also create awareness, education and enthrall millions of people across the nation about the hidden aspects of the society & social prospect.

"A cinema stands for humanism, tolerance, for reason, for progress, for adventures of ideas and for the search of communal truth and reflects social aspects." The earliest film of the world presented on screen named "La sortie des quvriers de l'usine Lumiere" is a true reflector of a factual story that happened in Paris which was directed by Lumiere Bros. The cinema in the world has remained a myth, inspite of the fact of reflecting the society, a stage came to film makers overcome the barrier by taking the trouble to match cinema stories close to society. "Cinemas in a community are like windows which look out on broader, richer & deeper things of life."

As all oriental societies, the Indian society too has been nourished on societal facts from mythology. Extracts from mythology closely related to happenings of society provide enough opportunities for the audience to exercise their originality, imagination & fantasy.

Great pioneer personalities such as Jamshadji Madan also took certain historical facts of society while making cinemas which had already audience. "World War II" a great movie with excellent momentum started to emerge as genre particularly on the subjects culture, heritage of the society of that times. Every community of the world has got its own peculiar social traditions, which denotes psychological makeup, social concepts and made of social behavior which are captured and explored by cinemas through out world. Many cinemas use past great political personalities for raising their momentum. "Alluri Sita Rama Raju" a film by super star Krishna was made to release in more than 100 countries with different languages gives a conducive personality who sacrificed his life in achieving independence reflects Indian societal scene. Relevance of many great scholastic people's thoughts today is coming true through the world of cinema that reflects ancient & modern societal facts. "Cinema must alternate between revolution and consolidation; it is the function of society to supply this dynamic element." The cinema such as "Titanic" which has its record in wreckage of ship is also a social & accidental phenomena. World's least expensive film named "The shattered illusion" is also a natural phenomena of the society that includes spectacular scenes of ship being overwhelmed by a storm that took place near Victorial islands practically. Bollywood cinema such as "Mangal Pandae", Ameerkhan as hero reflects the social, cultural, spiritual, communal aspects of Hindu mythology before Indian Independence.

The sole reason behind the success of "Gadar" and "Lagaan" was the element of patriotism. People of society supported Ameerkhan and Sunny Deol in their patriotic roles and showered encomium on both the movies. The degree of integration of inner coherence and strength is closely bonded with cinemas. Coherence in a cinema refers to unity of theme. Cinema is one of the significant factor, that generates, promotes and visualizes smoother national feeling, is based on national societal endurance. Cinemas can accelerate the economy, the increase of efficiency and promotion of welfare in modern society. A socio-culture, whether diverse or homogeneous, is a product of many interrelated facts, which can be reflected using cinema. "A cinema cannot progress if it merely imitates entertainment; what builds a success is creative, inventive and vital activity of society." Tollywood movies such as "Annamayya" reflects the life history of great telugu prolific writer named Annamayya who is disciple of "Lord Venkateswara", latest movie "Sri Ramadasu" also mirrors the true social and cultural aspects of "Kancharla Gopanna" popularly known as "Bhakta Ramadasu." Many films in Tollywood are extracted from the real stories that happened in society. The best quote, saying "Padamati Sandhya Ragam" a telugu film which takes place in America, gives a true & actual societal, cultural, economical aspects of Hindu people. Another recent film "Premistha" is based on true and real love story gives a lucid view of two lovers that prevails in the society. These films include the natural social aspects such as student's behavior in colleges, enjoyment by students in colleges.

In Tollywood, that too in latest trendz we cannot expect a cinema without college environment, here also cinema reflects the societal aspects. The respect that the Indians show towards customs traditions and culture are truly reflected in many cinemas traditions & culture are truly reflected in many cinemas such as "Dheerga Sumangalibava." Generally when one comes across the telugu cinemas they first reminicise the sentiments, attachments that truly exist and practiced in society. The cinema "Mayuri" a true reflection of a great dancer of Indian society who loses her leg in an accident, using an artificial jaipur leg she strives to excel in the field of dance and finally reaches her destination - reflects Indian communal confidence. "Thought is greater than armies, thoughts are more powerful than fighting men, their beginnings are feeble but their effect is mighty. These thoughts are shaped & sculptured through cinemas to reach the thoughts & expectations of onlookers." The tremendous and fundamental fact of cinemas is essential integration, actors' performance. Social unity throughout the ages. A cinema is one which earnestly desires to spread knowledge & wisdom.

Youth of India are the heirs apparent of this vast and diverse nation who are guided & educated through cinema. Individual's interests and qualities in social functions are reflected through the cinema. We must praise those cinemas which are treading the right paths. As the media scenario in India has undergone spectacular changes since independence, it resulted in highly effective & efficient creation of cinemas. Cinemas act as leisure in the electronic era. Happiness is an inner state of cinema, beauty of a cinema comes from grace and simplicity.
Great reformers, pioneers painfully realized the deep rooted social problems, evils of Indian society and made them to disappear through cinema education to certain extent. Cinemas acts as the shield of Achilles in protecting the individual and societal interests. The social values, the cultural aspects of true and spiritual India are exposed through the success stories of "Monsoon Wedding" and "Gandhi" are highlighted and emphasized in many movies. Global avenues have been opened to explore society through cinema. "The aim of cinematic progress should be a marriage between ancient Indian thoughts and modern scientific endeavor based on observation in search of societal truth."

One of the leading characteristics of the cinema of the new era is the abundance of its output. The modern age has witnessed a phenomenal rise in cinemas as they are very near to the society. The main motive behind the creation of a movie is to enable the society to societal facts. Movies with highly technology oriented sci-fi movies also depict the future society. Films such as "Extraterrestrials","Independence Day" from spiel berg gives mesmersing futuristic society before audience. The latest technological developments, mechanical and electronic devise are also reflected and used in creation of creative films such as "Die Another Day", "Mission Impossible II" and "The Stealth" etc., Even though most of the movies released have fallen like nine pins at the box office cinema directors dare to create movies that closely relates to society.

The changes in the world from inner and outer limits, society to spirituality, from wearing to tearing, from the dazzling kingdom of nature to microscopic galaxy of science, from rich to poor, from belly dancing to bell ringing, what not every thing most extraordinary

In an extraordinary society are reflected through cinemas excitingly, entertainingly and enlighteningly using high modern technical, gadgets & marvelous scripts, we may expect even more societal aspects that will be reflected in the cinemas around the globe. It needs vital creative inputs to satisfy the demands of the audience as well as cadres for future years, The success of these movies will still increase value based education, qualitative knowledge, quantitative development through out global society.

Bala Krishna .T.A.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Tolasi_Adi_Bala_Krishna

The last words spoken by Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski. Picking The Big Lebowski apart in order to give an explanation to somebody that's never before experienced the film is like trying to explain grammar to a Pomeranian. You're lucky if you get a head cock at the end. Well, the movie starts off with this guy named Lebowski that calls himself The Dude and he gets mistaken for another guy named Lebowski, which results in his rug getting peed on, his car getting stolen, not mention run-ins with nihilists, an angry Malibu police chief, an Eagles loving cab driver, a severed toe and an angry "marmot."

Throw into this mix a stonewaller, numerous White Russians, a neighbour performing his "cycle", a feminist, a stranger that pops in from time to time, 281 f-bombs and John Turturro's character which, well, all but completely defies explanation. The Dude's wonderfully exaggerated laziness almost looks normal compared to the Coen-created world around him, including his friend, Vietnam war veteran Walter, who despite his best efforts, just seems to make everything worse for The Dude.

For those of you that have not yet experienced The Big Lebowski, this Coen Brothers' comedy was released on March 6th, 1998 and stars Jeff Bridges as The Dude and John Goodman as his best friend Walter. Coen Brothers' regulars Steve Buscemi and John Turturro co-star in the movie with Julianne Moore and Peter Stormare. The film takes a simple case of mistaken identity and puts our main character ("I won't say a hero, cuz what is a hero," as our narrating stranger points out) through a proverbial roller coaster ride, with ups and downs, strikes and gutters. And in the end, well, The Dude abides.

The film flopped at the box office, but became wildly popular on video and DVD. It's been referred to as the first cult film of the internet generation. LebowskiFests have brought in thousands of Lebowski fans in the US and parts of Europe who come dressed up as their favourite characters or props. LebowskiFests typically include bowling, games, White Russians and oat sodas, and of course, a showing of the film. Further north, LebowskiPalooza 2010 is starting to take shape, to a lessor, but charitable extent. Lebowski fans have been spotted on The Price is Right wearing "Achiever" t-shirts and baking a toe shaped cake on the Ace of Cakes. The fans are out there, quoting the movie's best lines, and believe me when I say, The Big Lebowski is chock full of them.

It's always been my suspicion that many people didn't really get The Big Lebowski upon its initial release. I know the first time I saw it, I found it funny, but a little too complex for my young brain. I made a point of watching it again to figure out all of the ins and outs and what have yous only to find myself enjoy it even more the second time around. At this point I join many Lebowski fans around the globe that have seen the movie more times than I cared to count, but know that I couldn't do it on two hands. The more times you watch The Big Lebowski, the fonder your appreciation will be. The movie is a masterpiece of writing, acting, direction and what have you.

Visit http://www.lebowskipalooza.com to learn more about this Coen brothers' classic and about our event, LebowskiPalooza 2010.

Catch ya later on down the trail.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Trent_Whidden

Yes, rarely will a person deny that the Bollywood filmdom has been essentially male-centric, leaving little space for the female counterparts to evolve and grow as versatile performers. The roles they played were mostly of the “sati savitri” mould, lacking variety and depth of the ‘female psyche’. However, film-makers like Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Mehboob Khan and Raj Kapoor in the 50’s and 60’s, marked an exception with their brilliant presentation of women excelling as wife, mother and beloved. Some of their films portray the brilliant craftsmanship of the ‘flesh-and-blood’ women, with all their inner depth and exquisite spirited individuality. Take for instance, “Mother India”, “Pyaasa”, “Kaagaz ka phool” and “Madhumati”. A close look into all these four films will show you how they celebrate the extreme gracefulness and vigor of women in the face of personal adversity. These film-makers gave constant effort to present the constructive world of the female protagonists’ emotions with their supreme artistry and depth of human understanding.

Again, the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s witnessed a severe decadence in the portrayal of the ‘heroine’ in mainstream Indian cinema. It was then that the ‘female’ protagonist was reduced to a ‘heroine’, connoting the image of mere glamour-dolls, dancing around trees with heroes and performing cabaret numbers. This way, she was projected as a show-piece or in other words, as a “feel-good touch” to the film, rather than being a flesh-and-blood human being in her own right. However, even in the midst of such general decadence, a few films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee stood out as prominent variations with their presentation of the essence of the female soul. Nevertheless, these films had their common success quotient of romantic songs, melodies and other “feel-good” factors for which Hindi films are recognized today. However, the handling of the female protagonist was sensitive enough, compared to numerous other formula-films released at the same time. Take for instance, “Abhimaan”, where we see the extremely soulful Jaya Bhaduri giving up her musical career for the whims of her jealous husband and later coming to terms with her personal agony through the magical device of music. Again, in “Mili”, we find another bubbly, spirited Jaya, suddenly struck with Leukemia and striving to live life with the same animated zeal with her beloved. “Chhoti si baat” and “Rajnigandha”, on the other hand, reflects on the lives of the working women of the 70’s and the dilemma they experience with regards to the men in their lives, though in different contexts.

Leaving aside the mainstream films of Bollywood, the films of Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Hritwik Ghatak in Bengal should be mentioned specifically in regard to the psychological exploration of the female protagonist. Ray, in “Charulata” in the 60’s, introduced us to the magnificent “Charu” with all her subtlety and quest for a life of creativity. In her relationship with “Amal”, which begins with Charu exploring her literary and creative pursuits, the much needed intellectual companionship and attention forms the crux of this “extra-marital” liaison that changes her inner being forever. Again, Ray in “Ghare Bairey” and “Mahanagar”, depicts the female ever grappling with uncertainty and extra-terrestrial reality, with exploring the emergence of the modern woman in the upper-class of colonial India. One can not help drawing parallels with Ibsen's “A Doll's House”, as these two films, like this play, marks the female’s quest for her identity, an introspection of her soul, and a gradual self-realization, defying all set patterns of a male-dominated society. On the other hand, Mrinal Sen, in “Ekdin Pratidin”, explores the turbulent life of a working woman and focuses on her inner turmoil questioning the so-called “righteousness” of the external world. The film depicts the trauma induced in a lower-middle class Bengali home when the young daughter fails to return home on time. As the family is engulfed in anxiety, many facades crack and unresolved tensions surface, exposing the hypocrisies and pretensions of so-called “respectability”. Again, in “Durotto”, Sen speaks of ‘distance’ between a married couple and the pain of their alienation. Mamata Shankar here plays the wife ravaged by the bitterness of divorce and later gleaming with the hope of reconciliation.

Hrithwik Ghatak’s “Meghe Dhaka Tara”, “Komolgandhar” and “Subarnarekha” on the other hand, portrays the conflicting worlds of the females struggling for livelihood in the post-partition Bengal.

The seed of this quest was first sown by the dynamic Aparna Sen in the 80’s with “Paroma”, where the woman tread the path of so-called “promiscuity” only to gain psychological maturity in the long run. Today, directors like Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair and Meghna Gulzar are upright enough to depict ‘taboo topics’ like lesbianism, polygamy and even surrogate motherhood, where its woman who takes the lead role in proposing, making love and even in deciding to “lease” her womb without the permission of her husband-to-be! While in “Fire” and “Kamasutra”, the women brave the world to explore their sexual desires, in Mahesh Manjrekar’s “Astitva”, the soulful Aditi gives birth to a child out of wedlock and shatters the vain world of male vanity when ultimately the truth is disclosed. The film questions the feminist moral concerns through the detailed examination of sexual and familial relationships. Again, very recently, in “Shunyo-e-buke”, a Bengali film by Koushik Ganguly, the protagonist is a flat-chested woman of the 21st century who questions the very basis of judging the worth of a woman “by her cleavage”. In a vain society where a well-rounded, curvaceous figure is regarded as a supreme embodiment of female beauty, where her bust line holds more value than her brain and her emotions, this hard-hitting film questions the projection of women as sex objects in Indian society.

Thus, from Hritwik Ghatak’s “Subarnarekha” to Rituparno Ghosh’s “Bariwali”, from Raj Kapoor’s “Ram Teri Ganga Maili” to Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Chandni Bar”, we see the changing face of Indian women enmeshed in their private world of inner turmoil and the external world of multiple challenges. On a lighter note, our elder generation, earlier exposed to the “vampire” Helen, is now face-to-face with the more “fatal” Urmila Matondkar. Many are saying that the change is “delicious” for their “filmy” palate!

Lopa Bhattacharya is a content writer/developer working on websites for overseas/Indian clientele. Spooky, haunted houses, serial killers, slashers, maniacs, mentals, satanic and many others have been pictured in the movie. A lot of sub genres, a lot of remakes, a lot of variations, twist and all that can easily be found through the ages. Yeah, it’s all true. But have we ever thought where it all came from?
Or how does the horror movies genre change from time to time?

For you who share the same passion about horror movies, and want to know the road that have been travelled by Horror movies, allow me to have the honor to be your guide. Buckle up, here we go.

Where It All Began

The year was 1922, place: German. I can say that it was the birth of horror movies. W Murnau started the terror and fear thru Nosferatu, nosferatuthe
story about bloodsucking vampire. It wasn’t the first vampire movie, as in 1896 Georges Melies made Le Castle Du Diable, but Nosferatu was the first movie where we saw vampire destroyed by sunlight. This one boasted remarkable animalistic makeup that has not been replicated, even with modern
technology. Dozens of vampire movies followed after that. In 1931 Universal Studio launched 2 legendary horror movies, Dracula with Bela Lugosi and Frankenstein with Boris Karloff. Both of the movie became a classic and very successful. Boris Karloff even became a legendary name in horror movies history. The Mummy (1932) a silent picture with horror icon Boris Karloff in the title role, remains a classic, with unforgettable make-up and atmosphere. In 1935, the sequel of Frankenstein,
The Bride Of Frankenstein was made. This isn’t silent anymore.

Psycho

During 40’s the world’s on war, and it has changed the genre. Horror was almost forgotten as patriotic movies and war has taken the place. It slowly raised again around 50’s, where comedy and musical movies ruled. There were good ones took place at this time, House of Wax is one of the example. 1960 was the time for Hitchcock to make a memorable movie: Psycho. Too bad, this is the only horror movie by Hitchcock, cuz then he made lots of suspence thriller goodies like Rear Window, Vertigo,North by Northwest,Dial M For Murder that kinda changed the genre again. And remember, spaghetti western Movies in the late 60’s also had its moment.

The 70’s

This is the most creative year of Horror movies.Unlike before, horror movies got big exploration, where so many variation of story and evil came in. Note there were lots of controversy and protest happened here. The Exorcist (1973) for example showed disgusting scenes that never been imagined before, like the green puke to the face transformed to evil. This movie was controversial when Catholic Church protested that the demon cast-out in the movie was against the code of conduct. The shining, that based on Stephen King’s novel was one of the best one during 70’s. Later on from this decade to 80s and 90s, lots of movies was made based on his scary novel such as Carrie, Christine, Cujo, It, , Cat’s Eye, Dream Catcher, are the example. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) was a low budget movie that reached a great result. This one introduced “the slasher movie” to the world that later followed by Halloween (say hi to Michael Myers) , Friday the 13th, Scream in the 80’s and 90’s and so on. Omen is a bonechillin’ movie that can still give
you nightmare even with today’s technology of making movie.Simply unforgettable. Amityville Horror, based on the true story was the first movie that took place in the actual location. The report said a lot of bizzare and dreadful things were experienced by cast and crew in location.

The 80’s

Freddie Kruger

This is the decade of madness. All gory stuff were shown sadistically for viewing. cutted off body parts were seen everywhere. Nightmare on Elm Street that launched Freddy Krueger to horror hall of fame, and Jason Voorheyes slashing games in Friday the 13th are one of the example. These two had some of their sequels during 80s, together with 3 of Halloweens. And remember how Italian horror movies that have a very sick super bloody vision? Count Romero and Argento for this category. This is also the era where horror expanded to tv.

The 90’s

Funny thing happened in 90s. There’s a tendency of self defense and self actualization by horror character on terror they have made to people. For example Ghost, Bram Stocker’s Dracula that told the story about Count
Dracula’s painful love to Mina, or Interview With Vampires that unlocked the mystery of vampire lives. Scream started a new genre, teen horror movies, slashing-serial-killer-who-did-it,which soon followed by I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, and some more. A note in 1999, an independent movie Blair Witch Project became a big phenomena, using a documentation technique to give us fear, tense and mental disturbance. This one inspired some other movies like St.Francisville Experiment, The Lamarie Project and
tv series Freaky Links.

2000’s

Ringu

Still too early maybe to talk about horror movies in 2000s, but looks like Hollywood has running out of ideas. They are trying to widen up their view to see new ideas outside that can give new vision on the term of horror. The Ring, remake from Japanese movie was their first success. Followed by The eye, and some other remakes from Asian cinemas.

This decade seems being led by Japan and Korea, by making so many horror movies with lack of effects or gory blood but still successfully tortured our feeling. They don’t go with the Hollywood pattern, they just dig everything else that hasn’t been touched yet. Thailand is also emerging as a good horror maker. Indonesian movies too, with amusing number of horror movies every year. We also mark the decade 2000 for the decade of sequels and remakes too, such as Halloween H2O, Freddy vs Jason, modern version of Bram Stocker’s Dracula, Dracula 2001,
Halloween Resurrection, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre , House of The Dead, The Amityville Horror and so on.

While the effort to combine some genres and produce something new has still been going on. Saw for example, combine the psycho thriller ala Hitchkock with slasher, sadistic, bloody and graphic scenes.

My prediction? I think this decade will continue to do so. Hopefully in the next decade we will see some new approach, style and way to present horror movies. Let’s wait and see where the horror movies continue their path.

By: Riandy Kurniawan
A Movie freak
Website: http://www.vrjunkyard.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Riandy_Kurniawan

They can be used to bridge political divides, increase the understanding of another nation, or provide an export market for products and services. When one culture's domination of a particular medium exists, their may be mistrust and resentment when it is exported to other parts of the world.

In the United States, the making of films is considered an industry. In this view, Los Angeles is a factory town that produces films, television shows, and musical recordings in the same way that Gary, Indiana produces steel and refines oil. In other parts of the world, however, the making of films is considered an art form much like writing a novel or poetry. Nowhere is this cultural divide more apparent than the consideration of cinema in the United States and France.

The French view of American cinema is well expressed by film producer Marin Karmitz. Karmitz has stated that, "the U.S. movie industry is big business, but behind the industrial aspect, there is also an ideological one. Sound and pictures have always been used for propaganda, and the real battle at the moment is over who is going to be allowed to control the world's images, and so sell a certain lifestyle, a certain culture, certain products, and certain ideas" (Francesco 441). Is French culture threatened by the importation of American films and entertainment? A closer examination of the two competing cultures, and the role of the cinema in each, is important in finding the answer.

American and French Cinema

The Role of the Cinema in France

The Battle of France and the resulting German victory in 1940 led to an era of intense internal examination of French culture as a means of finding an answer, and fixing blame, for the defeat. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the case of the 1937 film "Le Grande Illusion" (which was banned by the French Government in 1939). Jean Renior's film was one of the most popular French films of the interwar years and was the culmination of a series of anti-war films that began with Gance's "J' Accuse" in 1919. The "Grand Illusion" is that war solves anything (Jackson 148). After the defeat, this movie, along with novels by Proust and Cocteau, were blamed for creating a pacifist culture in France that led to the defeat. Marin Karmitz's comments about the power of film quoted above, therefore, are well grounded in French history and culture.

The Motion Picture Industry in America

In contrast to foreign filmmakers, the American film industry views its products as a commodity. The object is to make a film, market and distribute it, and reap the profits (Francesco 442). While "Slaughterhouse Five" and "One Flew over the Cuckoos' Nest" are examples of American filmmakers producing thoughtful, philosophical pictures, these are exceptions rather than the rule. Most American films are produced purely for entertainment value and, at the same time, do well financially both in the U.S. and overseas.

Contrasting French and American Culture

As stated in the text, "organizational and national cultures influence organizational behavior" (Francesco 13). An understanding of the differing views of the entertainment industry between the United States and France can only be arrived at by an examination of their cultures.

Hofstede's Dimensions of Cultural Values

Hofstede's Dimensions of Cultural Values provides a useful tool in examining the differing cultures in France and United States. Based on his analysis of over 100,000 IBM employees across the world, Hofstede determined that there are dimensions to explain differing cultures: individualism/collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and masculine feminine.

Individualism/Collectivism

In individualist societies, people are more concerned with themselves and their families than with others. Reflecting this, organizations attempt to honor the individual and base promotion and compensation on individual effort. This holds true even when individuals are part of a team.

In collectivist countries, the overall good of the group is paramount. This holds especially true in the former Soviet Union and its satellites despite their conversion to free market economies. The expectation in these societies is that individuals will subordinate their goals for the good of the group.

Under Hofstede's analysis, both the United States and France are individualist societies. In both countries, individual initiative is important and rewarded. Applying this analysis to the film industry, it is easy to see that films in both countries are primarily identified by their lead actors and producers.

Power Distance

Power distance is defined as the level to which less powerful members of an organization accept that power is unevenly distributed.

A small power distance society is uncomfortable with power distances. These distances may be based on economic wealth, education, or organizational ranking. It is considered positive behavior for someone in a high-level position to treat someone at a lower level as an equal. Organizations in small power distance societies tend to have more participation at all levels in the decision making process.

In a large power distance society, an individual's societal or organizational level influences their behavior and the behavior of others toward them. While persons in a higher organizational or societal position treat others with respect, the differences in rank are clear and never fully forgotten. In large power societies, decisions are made by leaders with little or no input from those below them on the hierarchical ladder. Delegation of decision-making is rarely done.

While the U.S. is a small power distance society in Hofstede's analysis, France in contrast is a large power distance society. This fact was parodied in a 1941 political cartoon. In the cartoon "two bemused French peasants are being told by an intellectual: 'How can you be surprised [about the defeat]? You gorged yourselves on the works of Proust, Gide, and Cocteau.' All these writers shared in common the fact that they are homosexual" (Jackson 4). Not only does this cartoon portray the ideals of the elites, it also points out again the importance of the arts in swaying French public opinion.

American organizations in theory, if not always in practice, value the input of individuals regardless of their societal or organizational rank. Several years ago, Sperry Rand Corporation ran an advertising campaign based on the idea of listening. In its advertisements, it portrayed an executive at the end of the day discussing the company with an older member of the maintenance department. The message Sperry Rand tried to convey was that its executives were open to ideas regardless of their source.

Uncertainty Avoidance

Uncertainty avoidance defines the preferred amount of structure in a society. This structure may involve civil laws or strict conduct of behavior at the one extreme, and the acceptance of a wide range of behaviors at the other.

In a strong uncertainty avoidance society, people prefer structure and explicit rules of behavior. As is true in many large power distance societies, there is a strong respect for experts. The risk avoidance behavior found in these cultures can lead to a dearth of new commercial ventures and a desire among managers to remain employed by the same organization for a long period of time.

In contrast, weak uncertainty avoidance societies favor unstructured situations, strong feelings of personal confidence, and entrepreneurial behavior.

French society is marked by strong uncertainty avoidance. This may be explained in part by the painful experiences of two world wars in the 20th century and may explain its attitude toward the arts. In a society where experts and intellectuals are respected because of their social rank, high value is placed on the arts and the protection of native culture.

American society in contrast is marked by weak uncertainty avoidance. The entrepreneurial nature of the American movie industry is underscored by two facts. The first is that the early movie pioneers in California did not move to the West Coast for its abundance of sunshine, but to be free of Thomas Edison's lawyers who were demanding royalties for the use of Edison's technology. Secondly, many of California's early studios were founded by Jewish businessmen from the East Coast, who because of prejudice, were blocked from pursuing traditional careers in banking and big business.

Masculine/Feminine

In masculine societies, success, assertiveness, and competition are rewarded. In feminine cultures, personal relationships, care for others, and quality of life are highly valued. Hofstede defines American society as masculine and French society as feminine. There are several ways to view the motion picture and entertainment industries in this light. On the one hand, American films tend to be action oriented with an assertive and successful hero or heroine. At the same time, American studios were founded by risk takers who were rewarded financially for their efforts.

French films in contrast tend to be contemplative and less action oriented. As "Le Grande Illusion" illustrates, French films are often overtly political in nature.

Conclusion

French and American films are different. Likewise, the attitude of French and American filmmakers toward their industry's role in society is different. Hofstede's Dimensions of Cultural Values provides a framework with which to explore these differences. French society can be characterized as individualistic, large power distance, strong uncertainty avoidant, and feminine. In contrast, American society is characterized as individualistic, small power distance, weak uncertainty avoidant, and masculine.

When view through the lens of culture, it is not difficult to understand how the French populace feels threatened by the American entertainment industry. Since French culture is so closely tied to the arts and influenced by it, as the movie "Le Grande Illusion" illustrates, the average French citizen may rightly feel threatened by the influx of the American media. In a society that values structure, uncertainty avoidance, and care for others, the often violent, high action American cinema productions may cause anxiety, fear, and loathing for those who produce such epics. At the same time, French citizens should question the impact this type of entertainment will have on their society and be wary of the threat it possesses to their culture.

Works Cited

Francesco, Anne Marie and Barry Allen Gold. Do you prefer romance, comedy, sci-fi, adventure, westerns, etc.?

While these movie watching secrets can be applied to any movie, it is important to remember that what you put into your mind helps to shape your reality and view of the world. With that in mind, why not choose movies that will motivate and inspire you?

Though a steady diet of horror or crime films might excite you, they might also leave you with a view of the world that is less than stellar. A negative outlook on life will not help you in your interactions with others or in your quest for achieving what you truly desire in life.

On the other hand, watching motivational and inspirational movies can help spur you to improve your own life and the lives of others. So, the next time you go to watch a movie, why not make it a film that will uplift or inspire you - or at the least bring you some joy?

Your choice of movie will make applying the following secrets easier to implement. (Remember, though they can work with any movie).

THE FIRST SECRET

What is the first secret to turning any movie you watch into a spiritual experience?

It is simple but powerful. Before the movie begins close your eyes and ask your mind or subconscious to pick out and remember any aspects of the film that you can use and apply in your own life to make your life better. It is that simple.

While you're watching the movie, remember anything that impresses you deeply. Then, immediately after the movie is over, write down the scenes, situations, or lessons that come to you as being important in your life. Don't judge them initially just jot them down then go over them later.

THE SECOND SECRET

Next, review the movie highlights that you have jotted down. The second secret is to actively apply the lessons in your own life. In other words, take something from the movie and use it to improve your life - or the lives of others.

As an example, I recently watched the movie What the Bleep Do We Know? A motivational movie about the power you have to create your own reality. There was one part of the movie, though, that really demonstrated the power of intention.

Japanese scientist Masaru Emoto did a very interesting experiment on the power of intention and the written word to affect the molecular structure of water. Photographs of the structure of the water were examined before and after certain events. The molecules was brighter, whiter, healthier, purer looking after a blessing by a monk, and also after words were taped to bottles of distilled water - words like "love" and "thank you." (It should be noted that when the words were negative in nature the molecules turned a dingy yellow.)

In some of the experiments the words were accompanied by the mental projection of that particular word to transform the water. The scientist also noted that these intentions seemed to affect the structure of the molecules. (Hint: Intend to watch a movie with the purpose of learning something that will improve your life).

So, the lesson of the water was a testament to the power of thoughts and words to shape physical reality. But, how to translate and apply that lesson? That particular lesson could be applied in a number of ways, notably, recognizing that the thoughts and words you use on a daily basis help create your reality. So why not continually think and use positive words and phrases?

Of course, the most obvious application of the lesson is to actually write down words of power on jugs of water that you drink. (Actually, the simplicity of it eluded me until a friend of mine told me he was doing this.)

So, now I'm drinking jugs of water "blessed" with power words. My first batch features the words, "love energy." Is it working? I think so - it inspired me to skip some reality tv and write this...

Get your free spiritual ebook – 50 Spiritual Movies It lists and reviews motivational movies. This can be easily explained when we take a look at how mind perceives what we see on the silver-screen. And the fact is that our psyche treats movies way more different than conscious part of mind.

It is much simpler than you think. Before we will even starts to talk about it we have to say bit about our brain. Most of you know that we diversify two parts of our brain first called conscious and second one cold unconscious. Unconscious is the more important one. This is the one that takes care off our briefing when we are asleep or eye blinking. And it is the one that allows us to fully experience what we see on the movies. Because it doesn't diversify true events from false ones.

That's exactly the reason why we are afraid watching scary movies. Some of us learn how to deal with this emotions but let's be honest stopping your self from fully enjoying the movie by constantly monitoring your feelings isn't something I would recommend to film addicts.

Actually there is no way to get fully over those fears. You will always experience at least a bit of them as the are natural reaction to threatening situations. But lets be honest if you could delete them from your brain would you want it? Without them scary movies would be almost the same as action or romance movies...

Summing it up we all have been James Bond, Superman or Spider-man at least once in our lives. That is the reason why we all love movies, because for a short moment they allow us to feel like someone else.

Peter Saks, an amateur real estate seller who exploded his career success using little know mind control techniques.
