All Horror - Day 5 - Bloody Tennis (2026)

I'm not having particularly good luck trying to find stuff on my TBW list. I'm trying to knock out older entries but twice now I have started a movie and realized it wasn't the right one, just named the same. Tried to watch Thy Kingdom Come from 2008 but found Thy Kingdom Come from 2018 instead. Which is only a horror movie if you're afraid of poverty. It was at least short, clocking in at 42 minutes of Javier Bardem dressed as a priest and interviewing trailer park residents in Missouri. Unfocused, documentary-style misery porn that feels very sleazy because of the fake priest angle. Almost like they shot a bunch of interviews that were meant to be part of a larger narrative around the priest as a character, then ran out of money and just presented what they had.

So then I was looking for Stage Fright (2018) and clicked on Stage Fright (2017) because sometimes release dates vary. Nope. The 2017 version is a Lifetime Movie Network Original and it's basically a retread of The Phantom of the Opera. I made it about 20 minutes and quit, thinking that it had to be the worst movie I'd ever seen.

People, I was wrong. The worst movie I've ever seen was the one I picked after that, when I was just desperate to watch anything I could finish. It's called Tropical Parasite (2026) and it is The Room levels of bad. We're talking pasty-skinned writer/director/"star" clearly using filmmaking as an excuse to write off his vacation in the Philippines while coercing young, local women to take their tops off "for the movie." There's almost no actual dialogue, just a voiceover that wants to be noir but lands firmly in the fedora-tipping "m'lady" cesspit. The plot is nonsense and hinges on an AI-generated naked "sea nymph" that can only be freed from a (topless) sea witch's curse by a "true gentleman" and that sound you just heard was every woman in the world's vagina making the Windows shutdown noise. You're probably thinking, "wow, Lucy, I'm so glad you watched this whole thing so I wouldn't have to," and no. I made it TWENTY MINUTES and I will never recover from this.

Anyway, here's a review for Bloody Tennis. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi8-puqAxzy94B76KJPe9eoY9d-Yq0qa72L2xggIHLq0T6qWtc2K9FnP6B0DcR23RrwLs983vBzSHIV0LrTGKmbOBmu2rRYafY_Z-yuYoCFnpkjiCIwXGL9t8BZ8N-2hCOW3JTz2r6g4wYIZ8zERoySkC2fz6zSbGwc6SQZpImrhC_edjnpGBZs3Lz0ltwD" Coyote is sick of being injured by faulty ACME products. He hires a local lawyer, Kevin Avery (Will Forte) to sue. Avery does a lot of low-level suits against ACME, usually settling for a couple hundred bucks each time. It's routine paperwork that isn't glamorous but pays the bills. Coyote isn't satisfied with that and includes every single product in the catalog. This triggers a massive lawsuit that gets the attention of ACME's top lawyer, Buddy Crane (John Cena). The more Avery digs into ACME, the shadier things get.

This film felt like a spiritual successor to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The mix of live-action and cartoon was really well integrated. I also loved the use of archival Looney Tunes clips standing in for historical footage. The human cast is very good. I've not seen Will Forte in a lot of things because I don't particularly like SNL or it's various spin-off characters but I do like Lana Condor and John Cena. Eric Bauza is also a new name to me and he does the lion's share of work in the film as the voice of nearly all the Looney Tunes characters. Truly, a herculean effort to stand in Mel Blanc's shoes.

I know going to the theater is hard because of all the options streaming right to your couch, but if you can, stick it to Warner Bros. by seeing this as it was intended to be seen.

Eighth Grade (2018)

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhSOITRqAmIsPlKD10qJ0xjMpdsj-JF097oPn8bdTX05UZJuNLtHyE9kq2GzPLs98ZxtrUTS3XprLdXDN53j2orvljRvHYTzXMeEPjjx-IKq0AnVfpBHXs-SwpBS7Y0zABwQ7wC7MMWOKkdRWv8S9mPNiq0YdFkF1wEzY8egosdSHJXnuw-6J1VGpnlnHUf" In September, 2001, it suddenly became the emergency stopping point for 38 passenger planes diverted from U.S. airspace after terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. With only hours to prepare, and a gridlock with the school bus union, the townspeople scramble to find accomodations, food, toiletries, and all the other necessary things. There are language barriers, dietary restrictions, fear, panic, grief, and suspicions to overcome. All conveyed through 16 songs by a cast of 12.

This is a filmed production of the original Broadway cast. I literally knew nothing walking in and I was blown away by how easy it was to keep track of all the characters being played. The entire cast was incredible. Every person played at least four roles as well as all the background work in the chorus.

I had never heard this particular 9/11 story before and it was extremely wholesome and Canadian. A++. Still not going to Newfoundland. It looks really cold. But the musical is warm and cozy and streaming on AppleTV.
